Essential leadership philosophy and style

Phillips did a remarkable job in piecing together this analysis of Lincoln's leadership. It's amazing no one else had written such a book before.

A must-listen for any good manager who wants to be a great leader.

Even though there are two minor nits with the recording (you can hear Runger's breathing inbetween some sections and chapters flow together so it's hard to guess when one ends and the next one starts), I gave it a 5-star rating because of the content. I recommend getting a copy of the paperback version so you can follow these principles day-to-day.

Recommended reading/listening: "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin, which delves deeper into it.

A few things you should know before downloading

There are a few things you should know before downloading this audio book.

Lets take the positive first: It is a fast listen easily finished in a couple of days. It is (as always) narrated to perfection by Nelson Runger. It reveals a lot of interesting and surprising facts about Lincoln that I bet you did not know about.

And the negative: It is, in my opinion, not a book well-suited for audio. After each chapter, the author summarises the essence in a list of Lincoln Principles. I constantly found myself wishing that I had the book in front of me especially if I wanted to look at the lists later on. Please also be aware, that this is a very unusual mix between a management book and a historic narrative maybe not appealing to all readers.

Although somewhat disappointed, I have given it three stars anyway because it has opened my eyes towards Lincoln in a new and more exciting way.

Shallow with some interesting tid-bits

This is an interesting look at one great statesman in Lincoln and a very compelling idea in leadership. It doesn't provide the reader with insight into the reason for good leadership and theoretical aspects of the subjects, but rather gives shallow suggestions for leadership techniques. It is thus repetitive and not very penetrating. It is a well-written survey though and worth taking a listen.

If only more managers used these principals

I couldn't agree with his leader principles any more. I'm moved by a man who was able to overcome unconscionable adversities throughout his life and continue to stay true to his value of integrity and confidence in himself. I can relate a lot to his story and styles but do not have the ability at this point to empathize with my adversaries with such strategy, grace, and poise as did he.

Doesn't replace the book

I often choose audio books because they're books I want to read but haven't yet. "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is one of those books; I have the book at home, but got busy and haven't yet read beyond the first few chapters.

This was also my first abridged audio book, and in retrospect I would have saved my money and made more time to read the original book; this abridged recording doesn't do the book justice.

The author's reading is only so-so. He reads with many pauses -- probably done to emphasize thoughts and ideas -- but rather than add to the material they just interrupt it a lot.

There are also musical "interludes" between chapters read by a second reader -- a "host" if you will -- that remind me of those TV shows that open with "When we last saw our hero..." This device doesn't always work for TV shows, and I don't think it works here; it just serves as another interruption.

The book version of "The 7 Habits" has diagrams that help illustrate points, and although I'm sure this audio book contains the essence of the book, it's definitely more a supplement than a replacement for it -- I'd recommend spending your money on a hard copy.

helpful, but...

Covey's book may very well be the best advice book ever written, but I found it un-listenable. I gave up very early in the book. He would have better served his audiobook audience by hiring a professional reader.

I have not had the privilege of attending a lecture or symposium given by him, so I can't relate this recording to his live performance. This book does not lend itself to the live-recording medium. It must be delivered with feeling and understanding by someone experienced in recording written works.

This is well done

I read the book several years ago. As one who usually does not like abridged titles, I was presently surprised that this recording had enough to fulfill my expectations. It was a good review for me and provided some key concepts to remember and adapt.

I've read the book, use this as a refresher!

I've read the book a few years ago and intended to get this audiobook as a refresher, or should I say, to sharpen my saw. I find it interesting how I've missed out on some of the important points in the book. The print version carries plenty of life learning experiences, both from his own and from others. This audiobook carries with it a good concised lot of those experiences.

The piano musical pieces that fill gaps (that allow listeners to write things down) are a little annoying. Imagine listening through that while driving, even if it's 10 seconds.

Very insightful

The book starts with a fictional account of two businesses that illustrate the books premise that creating a "healthy" organization is as if not more important than having an "intelligent" organization. The story does a good job of delivering the message and keeping the listener interested. The last hour follows with a detailed explanation of the steps to create a healthy organization, and it is something I will go back and listen to multiple time. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to better understand how executive action/inaction affects how their organization acts/performs .

A great reminder about the important basics.

This was a great book and even better listen. The fictional story was captivating and kept me very interested. Just the story clearly reminds you of basic concepts like culture and cooperation and how important and subtle a role they play in your success or down fall.

The story captures your interest and the balance of the book covers in good detail the elements of the all-important four obsessions.

In a time that is focused on vital factors and goal oriented success in the face of ever increasing pressure to do better.

Super great read! Recommend to everyone. lots of great characters and morals. like a children's tale for adults, as the protagonist is on a journey to learn life lessons and teach them to others. Highly recommend!

Such a contrived story!! uhhh!

Good ideas in the book but (and it's a big one) the story DOES NOT help. The way the story is presented is such a cheesy and contrived way of telling a leadership fable it just makes me cringe - I mean come on - Argentinean maid giving leadership advice about how to lead organizations???? I don't think so... I don't know but I think it's time to rewrite the book Robin...

Awful

This is my first review I ever write, because I think it is so awful it hurt me listening. An endless thread of common place thoughts, not one original idea, the story feels lifted from Dan Millman's Peaceful Warrior and everything is glued together with empty phrases. It must be hard to come up with something new in the self help genre, Seth Godin's last book I read before was also very disappointing.

Good message, story lacks substance

I think this book has a lot of good messages everyone needs to hear, but it was delivered in a way that was so unbelievably corny, it was laughable. I could have done without the teachers calling the guy "Blake the Great" as if he was 8 years old. Also the cheesy music between the chapters was like being on hold for some huge company in the late 80s, maybe early 90s and completely unnecessary. The way the main character just bought into the philosophy without any convincing was unbelievable. This story lacked some substance, but I kept listening because I knew I needed to hear it. Like I said earlier, this book is full of messages everyone needs to hear, but be sure to have a sense of humor while listening to make it less painful.

Great book but the fake Hispanic woman accent kills me. Someone should definitely read over that part.

Too many character voices

I got about an hour through the audio book and although the story was relevant I couldn't get past listening to all the changes in voices they were awful sounding character voices.

Yet again Mark Miller has great insights on leadership!

These book adds to Mark "Heart of Leadership" and "Chess not Checkers". Thanks for putting into words several of my hearts desires for my organization. This is a must read for anyone on leadership.

Good listen

I had to read this book for a class. I have read other books by John C. Maxwell. This book made me question as well as challenge myself. I plan to get the hard copy to read again.
