Elegantly simple! I usually loathe fables, preferring gritty text in business writing. It was recommended by a friend and I found it to be entertaining, engaging, and beautifully written. Its unique way of conveying the reassuring message that "the basics mean as much as ever in this chaotic world" is one we all need to be reminded of. This is a cautionary tale for consulting types (like yours truly) who tend to turn business problems into nuclear physics.

Even your most reading avoidant client or friend will love this. Buy a supply, I keep handing them out to people. Apparently there is another book in the works . . . I've pre-ordered it.

You will never look at another cup of coffee again in quite the same way . . . likewise, you will never approach a business challenge again in quite the same way.

Easy read but nothing new or enspiring

Nothing new or exciting in this book. I enjoyed the easy read, but maybe I missed something as it seemed the owners of the Coffee shop were doing everything right. The consultant just told them to keep doing what they were doing. I hope they did not have to pay her very much!

The way to think about business

I heard about it. I bought it. I read it. I loved it. I believed it. I use it. It works. I succeed.

Highly recommended

I have never written a review on Amazon before, but I was so surprised and, frankly, taken aback by this book that I felt I had to share my feelings. First of all, I didn't buy it but saw it among the books my husband received thanks to his status as a book reviewer. He doesn't review books like this, so he was ready to take it to our son's school library. I picked it up because the cover looked appealing, and I was hooked the moment I started.

First of all, it's a refreshing story about a business that is succeeding almost in spite of itself, and certainly in the face of heavy competition from the chains. This little coffee shop can be seen as a David amid the Goliaths in Seattle. The story itself is pretty simple, but the way it's told is just very special. You really start to pull for the owner of this place, and, before you know it, you've started internalizing some of the principles the author (who I'm assuming is really the consultant in the story) talks about.

My own little company, an interior design/upholstery business in Westchester County New York, has had it's share of problems, primarily with employees who don't really want to pay the dues they say they will. I am going to give this to everyone I interview, ask them to read it and be prepared to discuss it at the final interview. If they can tell me how they will use the principles on the job, then I will probably hire them.

A bit Meh.....

I want to start off by saying that I have never ran a tough mudder but plan on doing so. I also want to say as a business and ethos of will dean I am a big admirer.

However on reflection this book just left me feel lacking it seemed to be a book not of inspiration which it could of been but sets of stories outlining why Will Dean is great and other institutions are wrong which to me goes against the ethos is discussing.

What this book is not is an in depth story of the creation of tough mudder or an insight into will dean and the founders but some nice small stories. Felt that it did not have the authentic feel to it which I was expecting.

I use this type of book as a cleanser between large volumes or different genres and this was an easy book to listen to and Elliot Hall narration was excellent.

Again I think what Will has created and his ethos and charitable contribution is amazing but found the book under whelming.

Tough Mudder History

I wanted to get this book as I have just completed my first tough mudder. I liked to know where it all started and was very happy with the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has done a tough mudder or thinking about doing one.

Warum der zunächst irritierende Buchtitel dennoch großartig gewählt ist:

Dass Christoph Zulehner bei der Wahl seines Buchtitels mutig auf den Begriff âFake' setzt, obwohl das in der aktuellen politischen Debatte über Polit-Hooligans a la Trump & Co. sehr negativ konnotiert ist, hat sich mir erst tiefer im Buch als richtige Entscheidung erschlossen. Auch der Zusatz âWarum Erfolg die Täuschung brauchtâ, war zunächst wenig hilfreich, konterkariert dieser Ansatz doch mein Lebensmotto deutlich. Wer fairen, aufrichtigen Umgang miteinander pflegt ist mir ungleich lieber, als jemand, der darauf abzielt, wie man seine Mitmenschen hinters Licht führen kann. Mein innerer Plott bis dahin: Fake ist böse.

Doch mit der Lektüre kam die Differenzierung und damit die Erkenntnis. Über weite Strecken auch die Selbst-Erkenntnis. Denn Zulehner erschließt in seinem Buch überzeugend, dass es ohne den Fake keine Entwicklung in der Welt gäbe. Fortschritt ist immer mit dem Mut verbunden, sich mit einem Grundrüstzeug ausgestattet in neue Dimensionen, neue Kompetenzbereiche vorzuwagen, ohne jeden Zeitgenossen jedoch ausführlich auf die Möglichkeit hinzuweisen, dass dies mitunter auch nicht klappen könnte.

Erst als ich verstand, warum Zulehner im Buch sogar ungeschminkt seine eigenen Fakes unverblümt beschreibt, begann ich, meinen eigenen Lebenslauf dahingehend zu untersuchen. Und siehe da, Neugier, Mut und Zuversicht brachten auch in meinem beruflichen Leben das wichtigste Momentum für Entwicklung. Und ganz ehrlich: Rückblickend wusste ich drei Jahre davor jeweils nie, mit welchem Know-how mein Unternehmen in Zukunft seine Umsätze machen würde, obwohl wir das Beratungsfeld der Markenstrategie nicht verlassen haben.

Ich begann zu verstehen, Fortschritt ist zunächst immer eine Art Fake. Allerdings mit dem Ziel, möglichst nicht zu scheitern, sondern Mehrwert für den Kunden, den Markt zu schaffen, und die eigene Reputation dorthin zu bringen, wo man vorher schon vorgibt, zu sein. Das ist, was wir in der Beratung als Spannungsfeld zwischen innerem Sein einer Organisation und ihrem äußeren Schein bezeichnen. Fortschritt entsteht erst, wenn vertrauensbildende Authentizität in eine produktive Dysbalance gebracht wird, die wiederum in Kongruenz gebracht werden will.

What a great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The author offers an insight into the trials of setting up a new business in another country and the ensuing successes and pitfalls along the way. I particularly enjoyed the intermittent lessons and 'words' sections where idioms and sayings from different languages are compared and discussed - most of them humorous and had me laughing at their translations and explanations. The narrators voice was engaging and easy to listen to.

I'd thoroughly recommend this audiobook.

Nothing new...

This book may be useful to people who have never explored generational differences, and are just looking to get a taste of the topic.

It commented on many easily observable differences and motivators of the different generations. This book felt very repetitive and I felt that I read the same content over and over. I appreciated the examples of what real tactics companies are using to attract an retain employees, but they were skimmed over very lightly (1-2 sentences). Neither the desires of the employees or the examples used to illustrate innovative retention techniques were explored in sufficient depth to be useful.

As an older millenial/generation Y, I felt that my generation (more than the others in the book) was mis-represented on several occasions and that the author wasn't truly in touch with my generation. As an example, there is a chart listing Generational Values that includes "heroes" - celebrities that are admired. The examples given do not reflect the "heroes" of the millenials I know. The suggestions given for millenials focused on technology and paid insufficient attention to other areas of importance.

Five Stars

This book is one of the most insightful reads that delineate misunderstandings between generations. Thank you Sherri.

I Highly Recommend It!

This is a great book for anyone interested in better understanding the different generations. It was incredibly insightful, and it gave me a whole new perspective. I've already started leveraging what I've learned with clients, associates and even in my business development efforts.

Sherri's descriptions are very thorough and easy to understand, and I thought she did a great job of presenting the information. It's a must-read for anyone who really wants to understand what makes the different generations "tick."
