The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill, was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own youthful experiences contributed as well.

Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations for various media, including a highly successful musical play, Oliver!, and the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture. Disney also put its spin on the novel with the movie called, Oliver & Company, in 1988.

Delightful Dickens

I bought Terry Pratchet's Dodger, and in the first page or so realized that the book is based on Oliver Twist. Many of the characters, places, times, etc. are from the Dicken's book. So I got a copy from Amazon and read it first. I have read it before, but years ago in high school. It is a wonderful book. It is Victorian, which means that the story unfolds at a pace that is more leisurely than we are used to in modern books. After all, Dickens got paid by the words. Still, it is a great read, and one of Dicken's shorter novels. Whether you are planning to read Dodger or not (and you should), do give yourself the pleasure of reading Oliver Twist.

Like another purchaser

Like another purchaser, I received this book - its written in German. And, like another purchaser, it is not clear anywhere that this version is in german.

A doctor's look back

I read this book many years ago a few years after completing a rotating internship and found myself mumbling "my God, I knew everyone of these people!". Of course by then it was hilarious, but at the time it was happening to me, it was not funny. It was very hard, dirty work. Anyway, I sort of identified with the Fat Man. I will purchase this book and give it to my son, AFTER he completes his year. Then he will laugh. Not before.

Should be a textbook for Medical Ethics Class

I read this book while in Respiratory School. I think it should be required reading for anyone taking a Medical Ethics class or considering a medical career. At the time of reading it, I was skeptical and cynical that such treatment and events happened. But as my career in a hospital continued, golden phrases came floating back such as "GOMERs go to ground" and "turfing".

I know it made me much more conscious of my relationships with my patients and made them a lot more human. I recommend it highly.

You had to be there.

I have trouble thinking of another novel whose only real audience is those who have been through a similar experience. If you are not in medicine, you may not want to bother. In either case, it's sexist, racist, and, in edition after edition, sloppily edited.

Repetitivo hasta la saciedad

Repetitivo hasta la saciedad, prometedor, pero aburrido. El autor usa una fórmula muy repetida en su obra sobre el oficio de escribir, el proceso creativo, la búsqueda de la verdad, y la definición de mentira, con muchas referencias filosóficas irrelevantes y muchas referencias a sí mismo. Por ejemplo usa frases completas, e incluso pequeños párrafos en distintas partes del libro. No sé si tenía la intención de usar las repeticiones como mecanismo de cohesión pero el resultado es muy obvio y nada emocionante para el lector. Casi las mismas reflexiones se usan otra vez en Las leyes de la frontera y Anatomía de un instante, del mismo autor, con mejores resultados en Las leyes de la frontera. Incluso Anatomía de un instante, donde usa un formato parecido, resulta algo más fluida. Al tratarse de un periodista, tiene mucho oficio y su estilo es brillante y bien documentado, pero el estilo periodístico no siempre es la mejor opción para reflexiones e historias sobre acontecimientos históricos, ya que se trata de una historia que por lo menos yo me esperaba más novelada y explotada de manera diferente.

I missed this book when I finished it...

I just got the chance to read You Were Here and I plowed through it in 36 hours. I literally couldn't put it down, I was walking around the house with it. It is a great mystery with two powerful storylines that intertwine. The characters are so engaging and empathetic. When I finished it last night, I woke up missing them this morning. Gian's gift for description and setting the scene is remarkable, you truly feel like you are there and you know these people. There are many characters with many different back stories but somehow you feel connected to all of them and their history which is quite a feat and talent on the author's part. I highly recommend!

Exquisite Engaging page turner!!

This book is not only beautifully written, but full of mystery, intrigue, and dare I say a touch of morbidity?

If you like authors who pay attention to detail and are poetic, yet keep the pacing on track w twists, turns, -a modern day narrative meets mystery w a veil of that Victorian goth u know u love.I couldn't put it down. Gian Sardar is my new fave

superbly written and narrated.

I loved this, the central character is crafted in such a complex way that I was interested in his predicaments, even sympathetic to him while finding him also unlikeable and weak. I highly recommend, the writing is superb and the narration complements it beautifully.

Amazing , Thrilling , Gripping

This Title was just amazing , second in the series, this book had me at the edge of me seat. As the book progressed it had me wishing for outcomes, worrying about characters and at times still with anticipation.

Disappointing.sequel

Loved Glorious Heresies but was disappointed with this. Ryan needs to have something special if we're going to root for him but despite his early promise he's really just like his Dad. I also thought the violence too protracted, it just got boring. Not enough of Corrine either!

This book is getting a hard time, and when you compare it to it's predecessor The Glorious Heresies you can see why. TGH is utterly brilliant, incredibly well written. This feels like a sequel that wasn't needed but that you welcomed because it could have been more of the same and you were greedy for it, however it ends up leaving you feeling a bit dirty and looking at TGH differently as a result.

The story itself isn't bad, we already have our main characters, but somehow it didn't work. It felt too repetitive, too many break ups and punch ups and I wanted more. I wanted more of the main character in Ryan, but have ended up not really liking him as a result. If there's another book around him I will read it, this hasn't put me off and Lisa McInerney is clearly a fantastic writer, I will just hope for better.

Following the impossible

What made the experience of listening to The Blood Miracles the most enjoyable?

The Glorious Heresies was, in my opinion, a modern masterpiece so writing a sequel was always going to be an onerous task. Although not quite the same standard this was still a seriously good read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blood Miracles?

The constant reminder that addiction is exactly that makes the reader reflect the 'but for the grace of God'.......

What about Shelley Atkinsons performance did you like?

The depth of characterisation is truly amazing.

Classic humor

I first read this novel forty years ago while working as a poll watcher in New Jersey. I forget what party I was supposedly "watching" for, but my dad and I were the only ones in town. During the long, boring day I read "Confederate General" and laughed so hard at different times that I cried, and snot dripped down my face. I am sure the other party's watchers are still convinced that Democrats are mental.

As someone who now lives near Big Sur, the author beautifully captures the spirit of the place. The humor is timeless....after 40 years, little has changed. Well, mega-mansions, LA tourists....but the heart and soul are the same.

I have all of Brautigan's books, this is the one that will have you laughing out loud.

A Confederate General From Big Sur

An easy read, as is most of Richard Brautigan's work. If you haven't read Brautigan before, this one is a good place to start. His writing reminds me of Twain or of Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" and "Tortilla Flat." Travel to Big Sur with Brautigan in the late fifties, early sixties...I think you'll enjoy the trip.
