Powerful and much much more!

I couldn't stop listening! Tegan and Gabe's story was beautiful and heartbreaking. The author did such a great job of making the reader feel all of the emotions, from anger and anguish to hope and peace. My favorite was the journey they took and the places they visited! I felt like I was right there for the ride. Can't wait for more from Karma Brown!

Best ever!

I completely loved this book. The ending was fabulous and caught me by surprise. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Amazing, heart tugging, beautiful read.

Love this book to pieces. The only thing that was upsetting to me was the mispronounced Hawaiian names of places. It really detracts from the listening of the story.

The story was pretty good. It did seem like it wasn't going to get to the point, but when it did, it was surprising. I didn't care for the narrator at all.

What didnt you like about Jorjeana Maries performance?

I didn't care for her performance at all. She sounded like she had a head cold, and needed to blow her nose. She sounded very nasal the entire time. The way she mispronounced words was annoying, as well.

A Masterpiece, soon to be a Classic.

What did you love best about Ancestor Stones?

I love the characters in all their various stages of life. I love them so much that I am completing a second "reading" now, something I never do. I also love the way Adjoa Andoh brings out the poetry of Aminatta Forna's writing. I have already recommended this book for my Book Group. I want to lead a discussion about how the women in this book adjust to all the vicissitudes of their lives with grace, resilience, humor, and choosing their own paths. This is a book with universal themes. Ancestor Stones is perfect for an audible book because Aminatta Forna calls upon nearly all your "mental senses" in her descriptions: sight, sound, taste, feel, and smell.

What did you like best about this story?

The title is excellent. The Ancestor Stones are actually representations of generations of women who come before, but the stones seem to offer a metaphor for the unique qualities of the women in the story. All these women grow up in the same compound with the same father, but each one had a very different experience. Each of their mothers came from a different family or village and shaped them to see the world differently. "Mothers" is one of the significant universal themes here.

Have you listened to any of Adjoa Andohiss other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I have listened to many of Adjoa Andoh's performances of adult books. I have loved every one of her performances including this one. Her versatility with accents and voices (both male and female) is remarkable. In the Audible database, look under the spelling of her last name as Andoh.

Any additional comments?

I would not change anything about this book. It is even better the second time because you can concentrate on the amazingly beautiful structure and recurring motifs in many of the individual stories. It is a book to be savored. I look forward to future books by author Aminatta Forna.

I didn't believe the reviewers

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. I ignored previous reviewers who said that it was hard to tell what timeframe the story was in. I would find myself spending 5 minutes going "what-what just happened?" because it's now 1946 instead of 2005. So I would lose track of some of the happenings.

If youve listened to books by Peter Nichols before, how does this one compare?

Haven't read any others.

What does Steve West bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I think he did a good job.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Yes, because I think it would have been easier to follow the time-frames.

Any additional comments?

Now that I'm finished, I think it was a good book. But I really don't know how it could have been presented so that it was easier to know what year the story was covering.

Excellently plotted novel

A wonderful literary summer read! My only complaint is the reader's female voices all sounded the same and were a tad annoying. However don't let that keep you from an otherwise wonderful listen.

Oh, this made me want to go to Mallorca!

A lovely little story

I originally bought this book because of the main character's last name, Hamblin. My maiden name is strikingly similar and my father's ancestry is British. Although tragic along the way, it was a beautiful story and I loved it, once it finally hooked me. I admit to having had a hard time getting into it. In the course of the telling, the reader is whisked back and forth between WWII England and 1970's Massachusetts, between Grace Hamblin Valentine's generation and her wild-ish daughter's. The story is told with the finest attention to detail I feel I could now walk through either of the two fictional villages and know exactly how to get around and to jar my own honey. It was one of my favorite books this year, and I daresay, of all time. If you like romance mixed with learning experience, if you love hearing English accents, do give this one a try. Right now, my heart is very warm.

Excellent tale of love and yearning.

Such a charming and beautiful story weaved with historical events. I am tired of overly predictable romance, when a read that genre. This story had much more than romantic love and was less predictable. Would recommend it!

A diabetic couldn't read this book without going comatose. That being said, the narrator performance was near perfect.

Beautiful story. Scenery was described so well. Felt as if you were there. Characters were developed in such a way that you felt you were inside of them. I have already recommended this book to others. Such a sweet story!

what an emotional roller coaster. there were times I was lost on who was who but I really enjoyed this book. from laughing to crying this book had me hooked!

Leaves you wanting more of the tale. I am very glad that I took a chance on this title.

Lame ending

The book was great but I was so disappointed with the ending. It ended kind of abruptly, leaving several stories within hanging.

The narrators did a great job with what they were given to work with. none of my issues are with the narrators.

While I appreciate having multiple perspectives in novels, it wasnt used to the best effect in Diamond Head. It was completely unnecessary to have the chauffeurs point of view start out the story and pop up in different spots. It added nothing to the story. The story was so disjointed that I had trouble connecting with the characters. There was no forward momentum. Each characters motivations were always revealed much too late in the story, well after I had stopped really caring or moved on. Parts of the story, usually what was happening currently dragged on, but the parts of the story that I found really intriguing, Hongs story and Theresa, were given almost no time or was smushed in at the end. I know the story was focused on the Leong womens point of view but I wanted to know more of the character of Bohai/Maku. I dont necessarily want him to be added as a narrator, but just knowing a bit more of his character would have added added quite a bit to the story. Some of the choices that the characters make just didnt make sense to me. Like when Lin, who was sold to her husband Frank by her father at a very young age, buys a 14 year old concubine to produce a male baby then treats the girl like shit. It just doesnt make sense to me.

Good book by an outstanding writer.

Machado de Assis is arguably the greatest Brazilian writer of all time. Quincas Borba, in my opinion, is not at the same level of Dom Casmurro or Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas. Yet, it is another excellent book by this African Brazilian genius that is Machado de Assis.
