THE edition of the book to hear

First off I first got the other edition of this book. I loved the charactors and the story, but with picking up the second book read by Barbara I was much more in love with the series. I HAD to get this reading, and I plead with you to pick up this book. You will love it!!! Very much a good old pulp story with a treasure hunt and all. A Nancy Drew for adults!!!

Just for Fun

Barbara Mertz -- writing here under the pen name "Elizabeth Peters" -- commands awe and appreciation, whatever you may think of her novels. She has been publishing books -- and not just novels -- for half a century, now, after having earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology at the age of 23. Smart? You bet! And her intelligence comes through, even in her silly, fun Vicky Bliss series. I have enjoyed all of her novels that I have listened to so far, many of them several times. Most people probably know her best for her Amelia Peabody series; and I think that Ms Mertz, herself, likes those novels the best of her vast œuvre. However, I have a special fondness for the Vicky Bliss series, perhaps because of its unabashed silliness and fun humor. And Barbara Rosenblat -- whom, I understand, is good friends with Barbara Mertz (Elizabeth Peters) -- may have been born to perform the novels of Elizabeth Peters ... or was Barbara Mertz born to write material for Barbara Rosenblat to perform? Either way, who could resist the pairing of these two geniuses? A consummate actor in any setting, Barbara Rosenblat shines here. She has the perfect German accent required in "Borrower of the Night," and the limitless range of voices needed to distinguish the characters from one another. She even does an excellent job with the mens' voices. But, for me, her performance of the minor character, Miss Burton, puts the frosting on this cake. Buy this audiobook, just for the fun of it.

Good start for great series

The first book in the series is so much better when treated as just that - a first book - it introduces the cast and sets the stage for the entire series. Wonderful! I'm hoping Ms. Peters will give us one more book in the series. If you didn't care for this book, don't give up! You won't regret it. I never have. And Barbara Rosenblat is the absolute cat's pajamas! She knows how to bring the characters to life. Keep listening!

A fun read

This is another fun read by Elizabeth Peters. As usual, I found Ms. Peters' characters well developed, and the story moves along well enough. Ms. Rosenblatt is a wonderful narrator who infuses each character with personality and color, so that even in an audible version, one can see the story as it unfolds. If you are looking to escape and be entertained, this is a good choice. I will be reading the rest of the Vicky Bliss series after this.

First audible book for me...

With my sister being a HUGE Nora fan (has 4 kids because of it, haha), I decided to check out this audiobook. Honestly, I would have to say I've read (heard in this case) better books and was a tiny bit let down..if you don't like cheesy, predictable one-liners, you might want to pass on this book. Many times I caught myself rolling my eyes saying, "give me a break." Strangely, I found that I couldn't wait for my 45-minute ride to work in bumper-to-bumper traffic to see what happened next! The ending was completely unpredictable; I almost ran off the road when I got to the "whodunit" part. (Warning: make sure you're not operating heavy machinery while listening to the last 15 minutes of this book!) If you like "Romance" (aka "crotch") novels, I'm sure this book is worth trying. Now I'm compelled to download the other book Nora has on this website!

More Murder Mystery Than Romance

This story isn't bad for a murder mystery, however it falls short of being in the romance category. Violence, racial tension,infidelity and family melodramas are prevalent. The "romance" of the story is a mere sub-plot. If you're looking for heart warming connections, keep looking!

Carnal Innocense

The story was easy going and kept my interest, the reader was very soothing to listen to, but the author's frequent use of the "f" word spoiled this book for me.

A great 'listen'

This is a great book - so easy to listen to as it is clear and full of action. Couldn't see 'who dun it' coming at all so full of suspense.

Emotional, touching stories of female doctors...truly inspirational.

This book has inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. Everything that took place in this book was in the 80s. But, it's the sad stories of three female doctors that touched my heart deeply. Besides some fouled language used, I was and still in love with this book because it was so truly inspirational.

Great stuff

I began reading Sidney Sheldon's books over 20 years ago, don't know how I missed this one. As usual, Sheldon keeps you glued to the book, his research is great, his style is great and the plots are the best

Mistress is a good story

This story is very good if you have the whole book. Do not bother with the short version there is not enough of it to make any sense.

bad production

The quality of the production was bad. The background noise was overly loud and there was music placed at odd intervals. My advice is to stick with the written book instead with this one.

Sure, an abridged novel has all the essentials, but this was definitely worth the extra time spent listening. I really wasted a credit with the purchase of the unabrided version. Besides which, you don't want to miss a word written by Amanda Quick.

Excellent but I miss Jeff Harding

Don't get me wrong I do enjoy Kerry Shale's narrations but Jeff Harding is my all time favourite narrator (I've searched Audible using his name to discover authors new to me because Jeff's narration is always so very good).

I love Lee Child's writing, his character of Jack Reacher is probably my favourite and I listen to 4 or 5 audiobooks a week so have encountered many great protagonists from many great authors. John Connolly's Charlie Parker, Tom Wood's Victor the Assassin, Mark Douglas-Home's Sea Detective Cal McGill and many more are eagerly awaited in new books but Jack Reacher is such an interesting character particularly as shown in this collection of short stories. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about his life as a kid and his travels around Asia, the US and even a short trip to England. As always I eagerly await the next instalment.

Jack Reacher, no middle name, no real change

Typical Lee Child. Cool, clever and Uber violent stories, concerning Jack and occasionally his brother. The reader makes him sound like Clint Eastwood - probably a better choice than Tom Cruise

No Middle Ground

A genuinely mixed collection of short stories with episodes from Reacher's teenage days up to "Too Much Time" which sets the scene for the next Jack Reacher novel "The Midnight Line" due out in Autumn 2017.

I'm often tempted by short stories but when a credit can buy you anything up to 50 hours or more it's hard to justify it on as little as an hour or two. I genuinely think Audible need to think about a system that possibly allows the purchase of multiple short stories for a single credit or indeed encourage authors to do more compilations like this in the audio format.

The quality of the stories does vary. Highlights for me were "High Heat" which tied Jack's history into a real-life serial killer and "Small Wars" which I found genuinely intriguing. Some of the rest I thought were a little pointless but if you'd like the odd nugget of Jack Reacher goodness occasionally between books this book will provide it.

The narrator Kerry Shale is Child's go-to guy for the shorter and abridged works. I prefer Jeff Harding but he does do a reasonable job.

All in all a good package for Reacher completists with the short stories available in a cost-sensible package.

"Betrayal and Justice For All"

Would you consider the audio edition of Ransom River to be better than the print version?

Gads, this started out fast and 11 hrs later, ended with the same fast pace! This kept me on the edge nearly the entire listen. This is a pure mystery with a small amount of romance, so beware, if you wanted a steamy romance, this is not it.

What other book might you compare Ransom River to and why?

This was a great thrill ride with lots of mini stories that got connected and kept the listener glued to the listen to find out the how and why of the story. If you like the reader, check out Phillip Magolin's "After Dark" it will not disappoint and has this same emotional thrill.

What does Angela Dawe bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I purchased this author because Ms Dawe was the reader and was thrilled that the story was so fast paced.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

generally, I don't think many of my listens would translate to film, but this one most certainly would. Think in terms of the film, "LA Confidential ".

this author left room for more books with these characters so we can only hope she did write them and they will be produced for Audible.

I wouldn't listen to Ransom River again because knowing the ending spoils the story. The ending was not what I expected and not knowing was great.

What worked:

1. Stellar writing

2. Meditations on the German and Swiss German language and how the verb tenses, etc. are a metaphor for Anna's life

3. Great audio narrator

What didn't work:

1. Everything else.

2. Relentlessly depressing book about a relentlessly depressed character.

3. Character has little insight or if she does, she doesn't do anything with it--the classic is her passivity.

Bad Traffick is the 2nd book in the Leine Basso series by bestselling and award-winning thriller author D.V Berkom and its one of those stories that will grab you from the first sentences and it wont let go until the last word.

In Bad Traffick we follow the adventures of ex-CIA female assassin Leine Basso as she tries to distance herself from her previous profession. Unemployed, a mother and in love with a Police Officer, she has to figure out her future. When Leine gets a temporary job providing protection for one of Hollywoods most successful actor, she finds herself assaulted on multiple fronts. She has to keep the Star safe, as he fears kidnapping, she needs to keep away impostors and in no time she is pulled into a serious situation involving a human trafficking ring and a missing girl. On top of that, some secrets from Leines past come to haunt her.

D.V. Berkom has that rare talent to write an intriguing story where things happen so fast and from all sides that youll not be able to put the book down or to stop listening. There are a few heart wrenching moments, one of them being the scene of a rape that I found very disturbing. I know the World is full of monsters capable of doing such things, I know the statistics at the end of the book are real, but sometimes I dont want to believe such things exist, but hey, Im the guy who doesnt watch the news exactly because of these reasons. I prefer to keep the distance, to enjoy my books and to see it all as fiction.

Bad Traffick has it all: Gunfights and car chases, movie stars and assassins, beautiful women and powerful men, heroes and scumbags, love and sex. My first book written by D.V. Berkom ended up as a very enjoyable, suspenseful and unputdownable thrilling experience.

Yes I would to anyone who loves it when terrorists get what they deserve.

What did you like best about this story?

That Jack Ryan is able to do what needs to be done to save innocents, especially his family.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Patriot Games?

The fact that Dartmoor Prison has apparently moved to Cornwall!

The narration was awful. For a book set mainly in England and Ireland the narrator did very little to pronounce names or places correctly.

It was my intention to listen to all the Jack Ryan books having purchased the first two, however the narration is so poor I don't think I'll bother!!

A zombie computer in slow motion would have created more excitement

I managed to get 8 minutes into this 20 hour long audiobook before giving up. Thoroughly dissapointed as I have heard many good things about the author and this series in particular. But the narrator is so monotonous, there is no character in his voice whatsoever. Very early on there is a action packed high octane moment with a car crash and explosions and guns being fired and he is reading it like he's reading out the ingredients on a box of corn flakes. Also having read other comments apparantly he gets no better and his poor pronunciation means perhaps he even gets worse.

Incase you couldn't tell... Not a happy customer, wouldn NOT recommend.

Great Story - not so great narration

Tom Clancy puts so much into his stories. he faithfully develops his characters good and bad, goes into excellent detail with becoming boring and delivers compelling stories. Oddly a narrator was selected who didn't do the story full justice. I'm not sure he's quite so bad as some of the other reviewers make out but he is monotone and unlike the author made no attempt at researching the UK as part of his brief.

I thought it was well listening to but I do understand why others had problems.

Not Tony Britton

I have to admit that I am spoiled by Tony Britton's excellent narration. Fiacre Douglas does not distinguish between the voices well, if at all. There are times when he sounds like he is reading the book for the 1000th time and is completely bored. Once you get past the narration and figure out how to keep track of who is speaking, it is a typical Dick Francis novel - which I love.

Good Story Ruined by Bad Read

I really enjoy Dick Francis novels and have liked the readers (especially Tony Britton), but this narrator doesn't know how to read punctuation and makes me want to sleep.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Folks who like machinegun-like delivery or 1980s-era computer-generated vocalization with no inflection.

How could the performance have been better?

The narration was so poor that I was compelled to write my first negative review; but I see now that many, many listeners already beat me to the punch. All I can add is that the editor and producer should have both been dismissed along with the narrator before this was delivered to market.

A typical Dick Francis novel, which is to say entertaining and satisfying; but ruined by the performance. READ the book instead!
