    Title: The Bricklayer
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Noah Boyd
    Narrator: Michael McConnohie
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-26-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 133 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Someone gives you a dangerous puzzle to solve, one that may kill you or someone else, and you're about to fail...and there is no other option. No one who can help. No one but the Bricklayer.
The Bricklayer is the pulse-pounding novel introducing Steve Vail, one of the most charismatic new heroes to come along in thriller fiction in many years. He's an ex-FBI agent who's been fired for insubordination but is lured back to the Bureau to work a case that has become more unsolvable - and more deadly - by the hour.
A woman steps out of the shower in her Los Angeles home and is startled by an intruder sitting calmly in her bedroom holding a gun. But she is frozen with fear by what he has to say about the FBI - and what he says he must do.
A young agent slips into the night water off a rocky beach. He's been instructed to swim to a nearby island to deposit a million dollars demanded by a blackmailer. But his mission is riddled with hazardous tests, as if someone wanted to destroy him rather than collect the money.
Vail has resigned himself to his dismissal and is content with his life as a bricklayer. But the FBI, especially Deputy Assistant Director Kate Bannon, needs help with a shadowy group that has initiated a brilliant extortion plot. The group will keep killing their targets until the agency pays them off, the amount and number of bodies escalating each time the FBI fails. One thing is clear: someone who knows a little too much about the inner workings of the Bureau is very clever - and very angry - and will kill and kill again if it means he can disgrace the FBI. Steve Vail's options - and his time to find answers - are swiftly running out.
Noah Boyd's The Bricklayer is written with the bracing authenticity only someone who has been a crack FBI investigator can provide. And in this masterful debut, Boyd has created a mind-bending maze of clues and traps inside a nonstop thrill ride that is sure to leave ...
    Critic Reviews:
"Nonstop action and nonstop authenticity make this a real winner." (Lee Child)
"We have a new American hero in Steve Vail." (Patricia Cornwell)
"Terrific pace [and] surprises galore." (James Patterson)

    Just silly
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I could get over the "rogue agent being called back in" part, but the rest of the story was just silly. Any particular action setup was complex and improbable enough, but these plot points strung together to form nothing. There were a few clumsy attempts to give the characters depth - sculptures without faces? - but the book was a just shell for action scenes.
Would you be willing to try another book from Noah Boyd? Why or why not?
No. I don't enjoy this type of book - all action strung together with a ridiculous plot.
What about Michael McConnohie???s performance did you like?
    The performance was well done.
Was The Bricklayer worth the listening time?
    Not for me.
    Good story, very good narrator
The disinfranchised FBI/Police officer has been done nearly to death, but I have to say, I liked this guy called The Bricklayer. He isn't really "damaged", just stubborn and knows what he wants.
The story was interesting and clever enough to keep me guessing.
Loved the narration. Mr. McConnohie doesn't use fake voices but instead just lets the story flow.

    Critic Reviews:
"Readers who have waited impatiently for this third book about the Donovan family won't be disappointed. Lowell combines her trademark sophisticated suspense and sexual intensity with a plot rich in the fascinating lore of cultured pearls and full of Australian atmosphere and the sights and sounds of Seattle." (Amazon.com review)

    Not a mystery story
This is what I think is called a romance novel, I bought it under the heading of Mystery. Very little mystery, smarmy sex story and lots of information on pearls- colors, cleaning, kinds etc. Not what I expected.
My favorite of the Donovan Series...
To really enjoy this book to the max, you should listen to all of the series in the proper order, Amber Beach, Jade Island, Pearl Cove, Midnight in Ruby Bayou. Although it does bog down a bit in the books on the abundance of detailed information on gems, you just can't beat the relationships/family/romance mix that Lowell does so well with this series. Archer was my favorite and Hannah gives him a run for his money. Great listen - enjoy!
Intriguing, interesting, and soulful in short a great read !!!!!!
I love the people in this book the writer seems to make them come to life it's almost as if they are living breathing beings!!!!!!!!!
a good end to the trilogy
At least I think It's just a trilogy, there would be room for more stories in this series if the author so chose. This book focuses on a third member of the Donovan family and a different gem, this one being pearls. I learned more about the gem trade in these three books than I ever would have otherwise and I didn't even know I wanted to. These books are romance thrillers and they could stand alone just on the thriller part. But, what I've learned about books in the romance genre is that there is usually some pretty hot sex and I guess I'm not complaining as this book didn't disappoint in that regard. This trilogy was my first experience with author Elizabeth Lowell, I'll have to check Audible to see if there are any other good ones.
    Story Stronger than Reader
Because the setting is Australia for the first part of the book, the reader's inability to speak like an Aussie was painful. At least she gave up after the first few chapters with only a few sentences here or there where the she gives it another try. I'm not fussy about readers, I am disappointed in Rowan's attempt at an accent.

    A Good Read
Nothing profound, never a classic, - but a good enjoyable read - Enjoy!
    Nice addition
As a fan of Charlaine Harris This was one series I haven't updated. I am glad I had a chance to read more. I like that Lily has become more open and at the same time finding herself a bit lost because of that. The mystery was interesting, too. Nice fast easy listening!
Lily cannot let go of promiscuous woman's death
One of the things that I admire about Charlaine Harris is her willingness to follow the growth of her, usually broken or stigmatized, main characters, even when the venture into politically incorrect territory.
I've seen reviews of previous books in which Harris is criticised because Lily Bard, a survivor of a vicious gang rape, saw the promiscuity of, Deedra Dean, one of her customers, as a lack of self-respect. Lily cannot understand why Deedra would put herself at risk just to have sex with men that she does not care about. This raised a red flag for some readers. How dare Lily judge this woman!
Yet the point of this series of books is to get inside the head of Lily Bard as she does what she can to rebuild her life. Lily's impatience with Deedra speaks more to her own need for security and her lack of trust in men than it does to any moral condemnation of Deedra's behaviour.
This book starts with Lily discovering Deedra Dean's body in a car in the woods, apparently the victim of one the many men she had sex with. Part of the power of this series is that Lily grows and changes with every book. Lily is not as locked away emotionally as she was in book one. Her reaction to Deedra's death, which she cannot get out of her mind, shows that while she still cannot grasp why Deedra behaved with such little self-regard, she cannot abide the idea of her being killed for it. This unwillingness to accept that Deedra "got what she deserved" eventually leads Lily to unravel what really happened to Deedra.
Along the way we also see how Lily deals with people who treat her badly (a sleazy man in his nineties, too used to getting his own way and too lascivious for polite company) or who suspect her honest (a Deputy Police Chief who sees her as perpetrator, not rescuer) and see that, although she has grown strong enough to withstand these people, she still behaves honourably towards them.
We also see that Lily has built a home for herself in Shakespeare. She has friends and people who respect her.

    Narration
Loved the narrator. He even used different accents. His narration made the book very enjoyable.
    Just okay
Sean Dillon books are all becoming too much alike. The stories aren't going anywhere. This book started out with a bang and went out with barely a whimper.
    The accents ruin this book
It may be a good story but the "Northern Ireland " accents are shockingly bad and ruin it. Sounds more Scottish than Irish at times and the stage Irish dialogue is terrible. Better off not trying or hiring someone who can pull off the accent to voice over Dillon et al .
Good and true to the written work.
Very good, although the accents the narrator put on didn't do the characters justice. However, still an excellent 'Read'
    Worth reading.
This book is well read, and all though the story is a little obvious, it is still worth a listen.

It may be a good story but....................
I was excited to see another in book in the Anna Pigeon series. I purchased the book last week and began listening to it. The narration of this new Nevada Barr Anna Pigeon book was so bad that I may not ever listen to it. The narrator, Cindy Williams, was reading in a monotone. I may have to resort to reading this one. I have listened to and enjoyed enjoyed all of previous books read by Barbara Rosenbladt very much. I don't think this is just needing to get use to a change.
    Disapointing adbridgment
    Any additional comments?
This abridgment is very choppy. It's difficult to track of the characters or follow the flow of action. It's like watching an abridgment of
Don't Ever Waste Time on Abridged Nevada Barr
Anyone who writes as well as Nevada Barr should never be abridged into an audiobook. I'm still not really sure what happened. It was a confusing and boring read...all the fabulous Nevada Barr descriptions were cut. I hated it.
    Lackluster uninspired reading
There is no performance here just a lackluster and uninspired reading. Unfortunate butchery of a good story
    The reader makes the difference
We love all of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series books, as do we love the voice of Barbara Rosenblat. Barbara makes the story come to life. Unfortunately this book is not read by Barbara instead the reader flies through the story as if it were a list of names in a telephone book.
In all probability Cindy is a fine audio book reader however in this particular case it is all but impossible to listen to. This was a very sad performance and resulted in my wife and I turning it off after 15 minutes.

Fellow inmate Cundo Rey, an extremely wealthy Cuban criminal, arranges for Foley's sentence to be reduced from 30 years to three months, and when Jack is released just two weeks ahead of Cundo, he agrees to wait for him in Venice Beach, California.
Also waiting for Cundo is his common-law wife, Dawn Navarro, a professional psychic with a slightly ulterior motive for staying with Cundo: she wants his money. And with the arrival of Jack, she sees the perfect partner in a plan to relieve Cundo of his fortune. Cundo may be Jack's friend, but does that mean he can trust him? And can either of them trust Dawn?
Road Dogs is Elmore Leonard at his best and readers will love seeing Cundo, Jack, and Dawn back in action and working together . . . or are they?
    Critic Reviews:
"Elmore Leonard, master of gritty, bad-guy dialogue, is a perfect fit for full audio treatment, as this snappy production proves.... The best part of this audio [is] Peter Francis James's pitch perfect delivery of Leonard's hilarious, if often NC-17-rated, convict chitchat." (USA Today)
    Members Reviews:
    Pretty fine Elmore Leonard.
Road Dogs is a story featuring Jack Foley, a recurring Leonard character who is "the most notorious bank robber in the country." Cundo Rey is a Cuban who spends three years in prison with Foley. Dawn Navarro is also a recurring Leonard character: a "psychic" bunko artist who in this book is a cold-blooded, calculating murderer. The action takes place mostly in Venice, California. There is scheming and double-crossing and twists and turns. Foley is a very likable character. This is partly because George Clooney played him in the movie "Out of Sight," with Jennifer Lopez as US Marshall Karen Cisco. If I were you, I would read "Out of Sight" first, because it happened long before the action in "Road Dogs," and there are countless references to it. The first book is also better than Road Dogs, in my view. However, Peter Francis James does a really great job of narrating. I would definitely listen to another one of his audiobooks. Actually, if I were you, I would see the movie "Out of Sight" first. Clooney is excellent, as usual, and J. Lo is fine. Sometimes the movie is better than the book.
from a big Elmore Leonard fan
Would you consider the audio edition of Road Dogs to be better than the print version?

    Publisher's Summary:
The newly inaugurated president, Joseph Gardner, pledged to start pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq on his first day of office. Meanwhile, the former president, Kevin Martindale, and retired Air Force lieutenant-general Patrick McLanahan have left government behind for the lucrative world of military contracting. Their firm, Scion Aviation International, has been hired to take over aerial patrols in northern Iraq.
Yet Iraq quickly re-emerges as a hot zone: Kurdish nationalist attacks have led the Republic of Turkey to invade northern Iraq, the new American president needs to regain control of the situation, but he's reluctant to send U.S. forces back into harm's way, leaving Scion the only credible force in the region capable of blunting the Turks' advances.
But when Patrick McLanahan makes the decision to take the fight to the Turks, can the president rein him in? And just where does McLanahan's loyalty ultimately lie?
In Rogue Forces, Dale Brown, the New York Times-best-selling master of thrilling action, explores the frightening possibility that the corporations we now rely on to fight our battles are becoming too powerful for America's good.
    Members Reviews:
    Great Narrator
William Dufris does a great job on the story (reminiscent of "Destroyermen"), but the story kinda drifts a little. The problem may be that there are not really any bad guys in the book; things just get outta hand like in a cafeteria food fight. The Secretary of State is an interesting character, and so is McLANAHAN!!! But, most of the characters are very forgettable.
    Patrick MacCannahan Does it Again!
I have become a Dale Brown fan as this is the 5th book in a row I have listened to. Edge of your seat action, great plot if you like this high tech espionage stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all Dale Browns book, so far this has been the best of them all. The epilogue was great and I am looking forward to the sequel. Keep up the great work, please!
    It Is What It Is
Dale Brown has the McClanahan series that seems to be designed along the lines of the Clancy Ops series. Generally meant for paperback sales at airports, they have tried to upgrade them to hardback status at times. As far as short form, fictional military books they work fine.
I like them since I can generally get them finished in book form on one roundtrip flight of six to eight hours with very little time reading while there.
They follow a formula with only a little deviation from that factor. McClanahan starts off the book still in trouble from the command structure from the last book. Manages to find a way to get into deeper trouble. Finds a way to save the day and stay out of jail and the book is over. Lots of battle and small intrigue in the middle. It really doesn't matter if McClanahan is a Colonel or General in the Air Force or an outside defense contractor, the story is basically the same with the same type of protagonists from without and within battling with him.
Foreign Policy and lack there of
Would you listen to Rogue Forces again? Why?
Worthy of a re-listen! I typically don't as too much new material exists, but on a long road trip it would be good. Reasonable narration, good story line and writing that is easy to follow.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Most of the time it did.

I would like to see the character Stone Barrington written in a more real persons persona where everything doesn't always seem to fall into his lap which gets all too predictable and tedious if you follow the series.

A exciting story told as only Fern Michaels can.
Would you consider the audio edition of Final Justice to be better than the print version?
Absolutely as I commute up to 3 hours daily to work. There is just no time in my busy schedule to sit down to read a book. Listening makes the trip much easier and keeps me calm while driving. I've belong to other programs at higher costs and not the ease of downloading a book. Can't say enough positive comments.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Final Justice?

    Hilarious
Carl Hiassen can rest easy now that Tim Dorsey has taken up the mantle of nuttiest Florida Novelist-- and I mean that in a good way. If you could ever cram the Marx brothers into a narrative, this would be it. Our hero Serge is at his sanest in this eighth foray into the weird world of a remarkably lovable serial killer (his victims are the kind of people most of us would like to strangle). Or he just seems saner this time because he is visiting Hollywood, where he blends well with the local sharks and wackos. I laughed out loud. Great narration. If you like this one, Audible has double-strength Serge in many more novels with no fall-off in quality.
    FUNNY!!!
OMG! This is terrific. Narrator, George Wilson is the BEST! I sometimes listen to my books at work and it's so hard to sit there and not laugh out loud! And.. with so many of Tim Dorsey's books there are lots of thought provoking moments! ;-) I listen to them as soon as they come out! This one is excellent!
Psycho: The Book of the Movie
I'm a fairly recent convert to the insanely magnificent Serge Storms and his permanently wasted sidekick. This time they turn their sights on Hollywood and all hell breaks out. The Serge books are unusual in that you can pretty much take any chapter in any order and find something funny or fascinating without actually understanding the plot. That's perhaps just as well as in some cases (and this is one of them) the plot is so convoluted (and a bit ragged) that actually figuring out what's going on is a challenge. There are still some parts of the plot that I didn't quite follow it's not Shakespeare; I don't really have an excuse, but I have no idea how one of the key characters landed a part as a real Hollywood star in a large movie apparently just to facilitate the twist in the tail. In the end it doesn't really matter, this is a wonderfully acidic take on movies and, as always, more tightly packed with fun and facts than a Peter Jackson premier with an open bar.
    Serge is never subprime!
Hilarious! The ransom note and phone call alone would justify the buy. Great narration by George Wilson.
    Storms Over Hollywood
Serge Storms, Tim Dorsey's off-the-spectrum Florida psychopath, takes on Hollywood in the eighth entry in his series, with sidekick Coleman still at his side contributing strung-out non sequiturs. If you're a fan of Serge and Dorsey, this may not be his best, but it is still good fun, especially in audio format with George Wilson doing justice as usual to Serge's rants.
The good news with Serge going to Hollywood is the non-stop stream of movie references, much of it familiar to casual moviegoers, some that only hardocre cinephiles will get.
