    Title: Freaky Deaky

    Narrator: Frank Muller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-10-12
    Publisher: HarperAudio

    Publisher's Summary:
He used to be on the bomb squad, but it's not until he transfers out that Chris Mankowski really begins juggling with dynamite. Rape and revenge are just the tip of the iceberg in a twisty tale that brings Detroit's denizens to life - and occasional death - in all their seedy glory. Electrifying, explosive, and unexpected, this is Elmore Leonard at his suspenseful best.
    Members Reviews:
Fun and Fast Paced. Great narration.
Leonard is a master of character building with a minimal amount of words. This yarn is feasible, funny, original and loads of fun. It's a train wreck waiting to happen, but getting there is so much fun!
The late Frank.Muller's brilliance really shine through with the distinct voices every character demands.
    Master by a Master
Would you consider the audio edition of Freaky Deaky to be better than the print version?
Yes. Elmore Leonard was born to write for the audio genre. All of his novels are amazingly entertaining and because they are all conversation-filled, audio playback, especially when read by the erstwhile Frank Muller (maybe the best that ever was) or Groege Guidall (alive and the best there is). I've read/listened to almost all of E. Leonard's works and long for more.
What other book might you compare Freaky Deaky to and why?
    Any Elmore Leonard...Any!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Always makes me laugh.
    Any additional comments?
I wish your service were cheaper; I go through these books very quickly. I listen in the car, the gym and when I'm home alone, cooking.
Glad that I finally got to Audible.com.
    Wowee! What a ride!
I just finished listening to Freaky Deaky, and there is a smile on my face as wide as the room I'm in. You just cannot have a better combination than Frank Muller and Elmore Leonard. Both artists with immense gifts, extraordinary skills and so prolific that we are honored to be able to listen to so much of their work. This book is set in Detroit, as many of Leonard's books have been. Both he and Mr. Muller know their territory back and forth. Our hero is Chris Mankowski, a suspended Detroit PD bomb expert. Our criminals are three; a man named Donell, a woman named Robin and a guy named Skip. Chris also meets and falls for an actress named Greta. The potential patsy of the piece is a pathetic multi-millionaire named Woody. Mr. Leonard takes his usual time setting the stage, but by the last five or six chapters the thing picks up speed and literally races to the finish. There is no way on earth that you can predict any part of the end, even if you've read dozens of Mr. Leonard's books. He is so inventive that words sorta fail me (sorta). It is hard to imagine having a whole lot more fun listening to an audio book than you get from listening to one of the Leonard-Muller collaborations. The twists and turns, Frank's absolute mastery of what he does, the quick pieces of dialogue with which Mr. Leonard creates these characters: what a pleasure! I can't guarantee that you will love this, which is too bad. I'd like to. These two guys are on top of the heap.
    Narrator is the best
Would you listen to Freaky Deaky again? Why?
Yes because of the narrator and Leonard keeps his stories interesting to the end.

    good book
the story line was good, still think the main character talks to the killer too much not to notice that they are the killer. narrator brought the characters to life.
    enjoying Goldie's stories
i enjoy this series & looking forward to the next ones. They always keep you in suspense. The narrator does a great job!
    My first Diane Davidson book
What made the experience of listening to Prime Cut the most enjoyable?
This is the first book I have read in this series which was recommended by a friend and I just jumped in and read Prime Cut. I was immediately captivated by the narrator, Barbara Rosenblat - I think she does a great job! Also, it was fun to listen to Goldy preparing her catering dishes - made me want to put the book down and go try oneof these dishes! I like the idea of including the recipes at the end.
What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
She has a warm, comfortable voice; it feels like I'm listening to a friend tell this story. I found listening to this book, which is light but enjoyable reading, to be the perfect break in my day when I need some time for myself, but don't want to get into a more serious book that I am reading.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Listening to Barbara Rosenblat's narration of the cooking made my mouth water! The description of the food was wonderful.
    Any additional comments?
This was great light reading; I am going to go to the first book in the series and go from there!
    not prime
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narration was terrible. The person narrating has a smokers voice that is both squeaky and raspy making the performance difficult to listen.
What was most disappointing about Diane Mott Davidsons story?
I found the whining attitude of her protagonist irritating beyond endurance and would have to shut it off just not to get mad.
How could the performance have been better?
A different narrater would have made all the difference
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
. I think that the book and plot were engaging except for the whining self deprecation of the protagonist. I will listen to her books because she does have a good way of telling a story and a mystery that is interesting.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
In his finest, most compelling blend of wild humor and powerful drama, Joseph Wambaugh leads us into the Hollywood scene to demonstrate the effects of that heady, amoral world on four sets of police partners enmeshed in the glamour and the grime, the hustle and the horror. They live and work in a dizzying mix of moguls and starlets, elaborate parties, outrageous and sordid actions; a place where sex and drugs are open and the big deals are undercover.
A visit to The Glitter Dome - their after-hours watering hole, where the lights are kaleidoscopic and groupies plentiful - is the only way to come down from the excitement and fear of the day.
Suddenly, their grim world of vice, drugs, and child abuse is interrupted by the murder of a major studios president. And two veteran homicide detectives discover the alarming extent to which they, too, have been seduced by Hollywood.
Once again, in the boisterous and riveting tradition of The Choirboys, Joseph Wambaugh creates a group of unexpected and unforgettable characters who inhabit the shadow world he knows so well, where the line between cop and criminal is destroyed.

    Jules Verne meets X-man.
I don't know when or why I purchased this audio book. I just found it in my library. ?
One fine day I started listening...
It started out (aside from unnecessary preface by author - I advise skipping that!), as a somewhat interesting adventure story with a fantastical creature element and a government agent back-story. All was okay until the last half when the story lagged and the narrator sounded like he was drinking.
By the end of the story I was no longer able to suspend disbelief (eg.,takes place Antarctica), and the plot held no more surprises.
    Verdict: skip it.
Too bad negative stars isn't an option
I'm not going to deal with the plot. It's too painful. Let's talk characters instead. Every character in this book suffers a truly massive case of HCSS (Horror Character Stupid Syndrome); the book is a textbook example of Roger Eberts "Idiot Plot" (defined as any plot containing problems which would be solved instantly if all of the characters were not idiots).
Case in point: all through the book, characters have watched a number of friends/colleagues get sliced, diced, & devoured by the Giant Primordial Squid. The GPS suckers (ha!) in the victims by using its Dead Friend Decoys, which it creates using tentacles which have the ability to swell up into lookalikes of the people its eaten. Near the end, one character had to be left behind for a while, all alone in the dark with the monster, pretty much guaranteed to get eaten. The gang eventually goes back into the cave & they see the stranded woman standing in the dimness, blank-faced, mute, animated as a stuffed moose, looking exactly like a brainless fake. Does the gang say Oh no, she got eaten, its a decoy! Run away! Do they hell: Gasp! Shes alive! And two of them run to her and give her a big hug. Slurp! I dont consider this a spoiler because my turtle could see this coming and was not surprised.
The characters are so two-dimensional theyre not even good stereotypes. We have:
The Super Soldier who, through no fault of his own, has been transformed into Something Beyond Human, so of course no one could possibly love him and hell never get to know love again, like he had with She Who Had to Be Left Behind.

The moments after the bridge scene...
Have you listened to any of Brian Hutchisons other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No
    Any additional comments?
    Recommend it!
    A Complete Package
If you are looking for suspense, romance, and a bit of action, this book had it all. Overall it was a really good book. I found it hard to put the book down. Well worth the credit and in my opinion this is the best book from Irene Hannon yet.
    Pleasantly Surprised
Would you listen to Deadly Pursuit again? Why?
Yes. It was a great story!
What did you like best about this story?
The suspense was good, and I loved the beginning relationship between the characters--very believable. I also enjoyed that it was clean without being too cheesy or preachy.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Better emotional inflection. There was no difference between when the characters were conversing normally or in the midst of an emotional crisis. It was also hard sometimes to tell the difference between some of the characters and it seemed the narrator changed his voices, and used the wrong voice for the wrong character which just added confusion.
    great story, boring narrator
I love this author and I liked this story. Was disappointed in narration. It put me to sleep. Could not tell the difference between characters.
On the Edge of My Seat
Would you consider the audio edition of Deadly Pursuit to be better than the print version?
I did not read the book but listened to the Audible version. There are some narrators I like better than others. This narrator showed a lot of feeling in the voices.
What other book might you compare Deadly Pursuit to and why?
Sandra Brown's Seeing Red is similar. A lot of drama and suspense mixed with a few surprises.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Allison's compassion for children and people in need was demonstrated by her interaction with Eric in the grocery store.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Eric getting the license plate of the truck driven by Darrell. His need to help his friend and his perception that she was in trouble.
    Any additional comments?
I'm a senior citizen and though I enjoy the romance and mystery, I get tired of too much detailed sex scenes. Irene Hannon does it just right.

    Critic Reviews:
[Johnny Shaw] is excellent at creating a sense of place with a few deft strokes... he moves effortlessly between dark comedy and moments that pack a real emotional punch, and hes got a knack for off-kilter characters who are completely at home in their own personal corners of oddballdom. Underrated Title
I would had never read this book if my friend didn't suggested "Dove Season" to me. This is a very funny book. The first half of the book is about a son getting reunited with his father that is dying from Cancer. His dying wish is to find a prostitute that he used to see. The jokes are very funny and it is well written. Think, Hangover, Big Lebowski and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, all mix together and you have Dove Season. The second half of the title is a bit predictable with the Mexican prostitute's murder and what follows, but this story is a fun ride with great jokes, like "Brown Bagging" and the "Head Nurse". I was laughing with my headphones on. I just wished that there were more audio books from Johnny Shaw because from what I read so far, his style of writing and transitions, flows very smoothly.
So far, there is only two other people that have rated this book on Audible and I'm the first one to write a review. I hope that I'm not the last because Dove Season has got to be one of the most underrated title of 2011.
Great book to listen on a road trip, but not suitable for families because of the content and language, but laugh out loud story.
I have to thank my friend for recommending this book because I would had overpass it base on Audible's traffic.
Really weird, but endearing, suspense thriller
It's often deadly serious and sometimes humorous. The characters, especially the protagonist and his buddy, are often reckless, but in the end the protagonist does the right thing, recklessly. The publisher's summary gives enough of the rest of the story. Overall, it is a good story worth listening to. The narration is superb.
    Slow start strong finish
Story is a little slow to start developing characters but finishes strong with entertainment along the way. Reading performance was great.

    Publisher's Summary:
Fifteen years ago Susan Morrow left her first husband, Edward Sheffield, an unpublished writer. Now she's enduring middle-class suburbia as a doctor's wife when out of the blue she receives a package containing the manuscript of her ex-husband's first novel. He writes asking her to read the book; she was always his best critic, he says.
As Susan reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings, a math professor driving his family to their summer house in Maine. And as we read with her, we, too, become lost in Sheffield's thriller. As the Hastings' ordinary, civilized lives are disastrously, violently sent off course, Susan is plunged back into the past, forced to confront the darkness that inhabits her, and driven to name the fear that gnaws at her future and will change her life.
    Members Reviews:
    "Deliverance" meets chick fic.
I thought this was an original premise, and looked forward to reading this book, as I am attracted by the idea of revisiting past decisions and projecting how outcomes might be the same or different if we followed a different path. The alternate path is presented here by the intrusion into the life of a settled suburban wife, mother, teacher, of a manuscript by a previous husband, an event and situation which becomes cause for reflection on what could or would have been had she made different choices. The pondering occurs at various intervals in the story as the eponymous Susan makes her way through the manuscript.
There are many effective theatrical touches - alternating scenes of domestic tranquility and dark terror as Susan reads Tony's story of loss, violence and tragedy but I am baffled as to what it all adds up to. There seems to be little personal growth, change, acceptance or realization, and the violence seems rather pointless.
Narratively, about three quarters through this book the story loses its mojo and the attenuated violence seems to drag on unnecessarily. Where I first was caught in the grip of Tony's story and its sinister rhythm, I lost interest eventually.
Very well-written, though, with ideal performances by both narrators, and in spite of the middling 3-stars I'm bestowing, I still give it a "thumbs-up".
    Nocturnal Animals
Originally released 1993, adapted in 2016 to film by Tom Ford,Tony & Susan is now known as Nocturnal Animals, and I think the novel is also being re-released with that same title. Having seen a big chunk of the rough cut of the movie that this will finally be, I think this might be one of those rare incidents where the film might be better than the book -- but back to Wright's novel, and to author Austin Wright because this is a book where the author feels very present. There's a point in the book where a comment is made, "why can't readers simply be readers and writers simply take a bow." The remark struck me as the subconscious longing of a writer very conscious of (maybe even a bit ambivalent towards) the impact of the reader on the social success of an author's work. That rhetorical sigh turned out to be the hidden emphasis of this *novel in a novel.*
Susan Morrow, now an English professor and a 49 yr. old mother of three, married to a prominent (and philandering) heart surgeon, receives a manuscript from her estranged first husband, Edward, 25 yrs. after their divorce.

    Standard fair for this genre
This book is not horrible, its not great either. It is pretty standard fair for this kind of story. Soldier, of course special forces gets an assignment from a dirty boss that doesn't like him. Sets soldier up for a fall delivering weapons to rebels we 'support'. Daughter of leader is beautiful. Soldier falls in love. Has no idea why he is doing this. Gets captured. Gets away. Helps in final battle heroically. Gets away? There are some surprises, I did not just give away the story, but it is pretty cookie cutter. If you like this genre a lot then jump in, the writing is decent, better than the average for the type and there are some twists and turns and if it is your thing you will like it. But it is not ground-breaking literature in any way shape or form. Recommended only for die hard fans of the genre.
    over dramatic narrator!
These series of books have the potential to be great listens however they are all read by the same guy who systematically ruins them by his over dramatic style and insistance on ignoring apostrophe t words so the book is full of what sounds like something out of a Shakespeare!! I won't be continuing with these on audible but might buy the paperback

    Wonderful character development and dialogue.
Engrossing. Engaging. But this is a tragedy. I cried a lot and hard afterwards. I dont know if I can recommend it unless youre up for that - grieving for someone who is good, who wants to do better, who is trying, but he doesnt know how. I fault his parents. They didnt give him love, support, and guidance. He made bad choices. He grieves for his mother. He grew up with no one loving him. The only time he felt peace, love, and acceptance was while on a job with his bank robber friends. This book reminds me a little of Romeo and Juliet, but modern, better, different. The lovers are from different worlds and can never be together. Even if Doug gave up his life of crime, there is a chance he would go to jail for past crimes. He can never tell Claire about his criminal activities, because she could be charged as an accomplice. He wants a life with Claire, someone good, not the types of people he grew up with and is surrounded by. I dont want to mislead by overstating the Romeo and Juliet comparison. Only a small amount of time is spent showing Doug and Claire together. Most of the time the story is about Doug, his thoughts, actions, and feelings. In his mind Claire is the focal point for change. Most of the story is enjoyable and engaging, with anticipation. Its the last half hour that is unsettling and becomes tragic. Doug believes the coming job will go bad, yet he continues with it. He makes choices which he knows will not be a happy ending.
This story had wonderful character development. Wonderful dialogue. I was engrossed in the characters and the lives they lived. I felt part of it. I enjoyed this all the way through until the end. Excellent plotting and events. This author is a good storyteller. I was rooting for Doug. I wanted to see him change his life. The day after reading this, Im still crying. I dont like books that make me grieve and cry, so Im hoping I can get this out of my mind. I want to forget about it. It hurts.
I suppose it makes one appreciate their own life more, not having problems from a criminal life.
This was made into a movie called The Town with Ben Affleck which I did not see.
