What did you love best about Light of the World?

I was a little worried that leaving New Iberia would be out of my comfort zone. I like the whole "live oaks and moss" thing, its very VERY evocative. But bringing the characters out to a wide open spaces environment worked really well. I could easily see them in this environment as I could in their natural setting.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The author's skill is in giving you just enough mischief for the characters to get into, and then taking you off to see what had happened to another character who was also getting into mischief. Its too tempting to jump from place to place to make sure your favourite character isn't coming too unstuck. But happily, the pleasure of finding another character wading recklessly into another mess of trouble elsewhere always keeps you interested.

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

His accent is just *awesome*. It enhances the glory of the author's writing ... like a boss. And his characterisation is perfect. I was very quickly able to determine which character was speaking.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Bobbsey Twins take on The Big Sky.

Time's up Mr. Burke

This was the 11th Audiobook of JLB's that I have listened to. I love the series and remain a fan, even after this. It seems to me that the author had two half-finished books and combined them in a hap-hazard fashion. Characters are not properly described or developed and the story is just plain silly. I hope he retires before he further taints his otherwise magnificent legacy

Good creation of atmosphere.

The descriptions of the characters,,actions and environment plus dark humour made the story very enjoyable.

The reader highlights the difference between American and UK English.

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Will Paton's accents are brilliant. He brings each character to life and while at first the local dialects can sometimes be a bit tricky to understand for us Brits, you soon get used to it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This was one of those books that I could not wait to get back in the car and carry on listening to. If there was one criticism, it would be that it was a little too long and some scenes did not add much to the plot.

This was my first James Lee Burke novel and he is so descriptive, you feel like you are stood next to the characters in Montana as it is happening. He also has a very dry sense of humor with some excellent "one liners".

Don't start the series here

In the last book (no spoiler), everything went FUBAR. I couldn't imagine how McDermid would resurrect the characters, but she did. This is another excellent serial killer book, in this case delving into sexism and gender roles but not in an obvious way. I simply loved every page, but if you haven't read the other books, dont start the series here. Bechdel test: Passed (almost all main characters are female). Grade: A-

Narration: Doyle is excellent. He perfectly captures Tony Hill, Carol Jordan and friends. I hope the publisher never picks another narrator.

Picking up the pieces...

I love this series. I was devastated, as were the main characters, at the end of the last book.

This book gathers the pieces of those widely divided characters and loosely unites them in efforts to save one of their own. The serial killings, detective work, and eventual justice are all here. In fact, they are the force that pulls everyone closer. We are left with this loose network of characters and some hints for the future.

I believe that Val McDermid dropped in enough hints about the previous squad's history to allow this book to stand alone.

Gerard Doyle gives another excellent performance.

Note: There is an unrelated short story added after the book ends. Due to some poor editing, it just starts as if part of the book. It took a bit (staring at my ipod) to realize that it is an "extra." It is worth listening to it, just be aware that its title, introduction, etc. are at its end instead of at the beginning.

Another terrific book in the Dr. Tony Hill series

The writing is good, the characters believable and interesting and the plot thick enough to entertain. As usual, Gerald Doyle gives a fine reading. I recommend highly.

wince and learn

The first half of #8 in this series felt very deja vu and second rate for a McDermid, but second half contained her usual engrossing storyline. However, for me, enduring the usual Mcdermid graphic, domestic-inspired violence wasnt worth the second-half story.

Story is great, narrator's reading voice is not

What did you love best about Into the Lair?

I really enjoy Maya Banks books, story line is great and sexy. I read the book years ago and bought the audiobook for that reason.

How could the performance have been better?

Narrator tries too hard to have a smokey, breathy voice for reading, the voice used to speak charaters lines wasn't that bad. The reading voice was too distracting for me to finish listening to the book. That alone makes me want to return the book for a refund.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Unfortunately, no, The narrator's reading voice was hard to bear.

Brown continues with his main character in another adventure in marvelous European cities. It was wonderful to see through his narrative the places I had visited in Rome. I hope he keeps writing these, I'll never tire of them. Though his character is the continuing character, each of these books could be read independently.

Movie came out too quick!

I read it in English and then bought it for my husband who is French, (too difficult for him in English). Then the movie decided to come out 2 weeks later...the book is now stashed in his drawer. :-)

I like Dan Brown's books. His books are difficult to put down until you get to the end, then you wish you weren't finished!

Just mediocre...

I would say this story was just mediocre. I've been working my way through Diane Chamberlain's books, and this is the first one to disappoint. First, the performance for this book was dreadful. It seemed like she was speaking so fast, and her different voices were like nails on a chalkboard. Second, I'm guessing this was written before Ms. Chamberlain had children, because she has zero clue in this story what it's like to have a one year old. The child always slept, was always happy, and never seemed to prevent her from working on her word processing. Kids at fussy, whiney, they don't always sleep, and they don't always cooperate. This was s very unrealistic portrayal of what it's like to be a single parent of a young child. I'll move on to her next book though.

The "Taken Child" from a different perspective

When I read the papers about children being taken by the non-custodial parent I usually find myself on the custodial parents side.

This story gives the opposite side-that of the parent who has had her child taken from her by the courts.

The dad in this story is painted very typically bad guy..one has to wonder why any woman would be attracted to this lying guy.!

OTOH the mom is nothing but a wonderful woman and of course everyone says what a great mom she is.

Not one of Chamberlains best, I felt this novel could have been written much more interestingly than she was.

Not My Favorite of Hers

I have truly enjoyed several of Chamberlains other books - both in print and in audio. This one, unfortunately, is far from my favorite of her work. Though Chamberlains books all have a certain Lifetime-movie-quality, this one feels more like a re-run... the story feels overly familiar and even the subplots fail to add an unexpected element (despite the bombings, even!). The performer narrates the audio version has a smooth voice, and though she handles the male characters well, the timbre she uses for Lucy in particular is almost painfully brash. It certainly makes me thankful that she is such a relatively minor character!

Originally published in 1997, this book certainly feels a bit dated listening to it now. Particularly in the way that the research is handled, and how many different factors would change in todays world were the same story to be told.

Steamy Suspenseful Sequel!

Bare It All is the second book in the Love Undercover series, and follows Detective Reese Baredon and Alice Appleton and their developing relationship. Reese is very curious about Alice's past and wants to protect her. Alice has secrets she doesn't want to share, but Reese isn't about to let his quirky neighbour get away with that.

Alice is a secondary character from another book written by Lori Foster, 'Trace of Fever'. It isn't necessary to have read that book to understand the trauma that Alice has gone through that has left her wary of her surroundings and isolated from her family (but, seriously, that too is an excellent book and well worth a credit!).

While I very much enjoyed the first book in this series (Run the Risk), Alice is my favourite character due to her quirks and her strength of character so I loved listening to her story. Worth a credit? Oh yes, absolutely!

We met Detective Reese Bareden and his neighbor Alice Appleton in book one, Run The Risk. Reese rescues a stray dog, brings it home and then realizes that its still young and really shouldnt be left home alone during the day. Hed seen Alice in his building, thought she worked from home, so he approaches her to see if shed be willing to dog sit during Reeses long days at the office. Alice agrees. She doesnt say much to Reese, keeps the conversation dog related. Reese, however, is really intrigued by Alice. He thinks she is beautiful but knows she doesnt think so. He can tell by how she dresses and carries herself. Alice, however, shows no interest in Reese, only Cash, Reeses dog............ This story grabbed me and didnt let me go. Its everything I look for in a romance and while not labeled suspense there is some of that in here as it pertains to the case Reese and Logan are working on. But the character who stole the show for me in here was Alice. Its impossible to describe her totally without giving too much away, but suffice it to say that shes scarred from her past and has trouble trusting people. If that werent enough, she carries a lot of guilt for what happened, even though it really and truly was not her fault. She did what she had to do to survive; but she lives with that every day of her life. Its caused her to be a bit of an introvert and shes even cut ties with her family. Alice is super intelligent and though shes extremely careful with people she immediately senses that Reese is someone she can trust. And hes gorgeous and sexy and she loves to just look at him............. The introduction of the case that Alice inadvertently lends herself to brings just a little bit of mystery and suspense to this story.

Allingham just keeps getting better!

This time we get into the mind and habits of s serial killer, pursued by a wider circle of interested parties. Excellent and very modern, and Charles Luke really shines. My only complaint is that Lugg and Amanda don't play a part.

Would you consider the audio edition of Hide My Eyes to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print edition.

What did you like best about this story?

Her characterizations are always excellent. People are vivid, well-rounded, unusual and individualistic.

Have you listened to any of David Thorpes other performances before? How does this one compare?

David Thorpe is fantastic. Although most people say that Frances Matthews reads Allingham better (and he is great), David Thorpe pushes the envelope and makes each character so individualistic. He has great enthusiasm and attention to detail in his reading. People don't like the high whine he puts into Campion's voice, but that is how Allingham describes Campion's voice in Black Dudley.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film of it as, although it was good, it was kind of a pale shadow of Tiger In The Smoke.

Allingham can do no wrong.

A disappointment

This book is too long and the reader has made the voices so different from previous books that nothing rings true.

Exciting Story Well Read

What made the experience of listening to Hide My Eyes the most enjoyable?

This is a pacey story - moving much faster than the other Campion books. Luke plays a key role and although I didn't like the voice this reader gave him the story was very gripping and enjoyable.

Campion - who else in one of these books?

What about David Thorpes performance did you like?

I freely admit that Philip Franks is my absolute favourite for reading these books but he never recorded this one. David Thorpe did very well and gave each character a different voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

That would give away the plot. There are several poignant moments when someone realises the truth in stages.
