Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Adversity Builds Character is the story of a young man's life struggles to find his way through the trials and tribulations of family turmoil, self-determination, and personal judgment. This transformational life experience, like so many, demonstrates the triumph of the human spirit over the pitfalls in our modern world. From a divorce wrecked family life through the upheavals of a shattered home brought on by a disease-ridden single mom, Thomas Ufert is blessed with the first of many second chances granted to him by his Godmother and her family.
Overcoming personal character flaws this new home life radically averts potential disaster and leads him to greater heights by redirecting and guiding the God-given talents of his character leading to never before realized academic and social achievements. At the height of his new found career development, while in college, Tom's world is shattered yet again by the sudden tragic loss of his mother in a bizarre event of mercy-killing and suicide.
While attempting to put this catastrophe behind him, personal doubt, guilt, and the awakening of his inner most desires threaten to destroy all he has worked so intently to achieve. Drinking and sexual experimentation almost ruin his future hopes of a promising political career to only be averted and redirected yet again through the guiding love of his life-long patron. Studies abroad and the first real love of his life demonstrate the truth of his path. Short-lived, divorce yet again forces a change of direction, ultimately pointing the way to his true self.
Temporarily postponing his career, Ufert relocates and discovers a world where he finally feels at home and accepted without ridicule. As is so often the case, comfort and overconfidence lead to weakness and self-destruction. It is at this moment that one either succumbs to the burden of outside influence or gathers all his strength to rise like a phoenix. Though poor judgment nearly costs him his life, Tommy finds his character and rises above it all.

    This man is Amazing! Inspirational
Truely inspirational! A must read!! If you think you've had it hard you should read this!
He has been thru hell and still remains strong! Kudos!
    Ufert Inspires
Tom and I were classmates in high school but have lost touch since. When I saw that Tom had written a book, I wanted to read it just to know what had gone on in his life. I was not prepared for the intensity, honesty and courage that poured from the page. I can honestly say I know of no one who has been through as much as Tom has in his life.
As we go through life we often have to remind ourselves to be thankful for our blessings. This book is a blessing in that it reminds us that through the grace of God and a positive attitude, all things are possible. I can't wait for the book tour. Thank you Tom.
    Awesome book
I do know the man that wrote this book. But being bias, this book was awesome. It made me realize that there is someone that has had it worse than you. And with the power of God and will power you can do so much for yourself. Thank You Tom for sharing this with the world.
    good read.
I learned a lot about Tom that I did not know before. He bares his soul without sensationalizing the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
My dear sweet little guy was "sunny-side up" and turned around, so I was scheduled for a C-Section on August 10, 2004 in the morning. They had estimated a few weeks too early and my son was taken to NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and hooked up to all sorts of machines and a life support machine was waiting nearby.
His lungs weren't fully developed yet. He stayed in the NICU for about three weeks. There were complications of him not breathing or he would stop breathing when he would be fed.
Finally I was able to bring him home and then the adventure of Nick started!
After I brought Nick home from the hospital, he started progressing as any normal child would. He began speaking with words like, "mama", "dada", "kitty" (we have two cats). He started to first roll around and then shortly thereafter he began to crawl. He loved to eat and whenever he would hear his spoon scrape the bottom of the jar, he would get upset and cry because he knew there would be no more food until his next feeding...
Nick was progressing as a normal baby and child would. The summer of 2006, I started noticing changes in him. He wasnt smiling as much anymore, he had stopped talking and jibber jabbering, he wasnt crawling or beginning to walk anymore. It was as if everything he had learned, began to go in reverse.
When I took him to get his shots in October, I asked his pediatrician, who had been with him since his birth, if she noticed in changes in him. She observed him for a while and informed me that something doesnt look like its connecting right in his head. She wrote a referral for Nick to get evaluated at Childrens Hospital.
An appointment was made in the Developmental Psychiatric Department in mid-November. It was hard when a doctor tells you that your child suffers from life long disorders. Your mind tends to wander and wonder if your child will ever be "normal" again.

In Make Me a Mother, acclaimed memoirist Susanne Antonetta adopts an infant from Seoul, South Korea. After meeting their six-month-old son, Jin, at the airport - an incident made memorable when Susanne, so eager to meet her son, is chased down by security - Susanne and her husband learn lessons common to all parents, such as the lack of sleep and the worry and joy of loving a child. They also learn lessons particular to their own family: not just how another being can take over your life but how to let an entire culture in, how to discuss birth parents who gave up a child, and the tricky steps required to navigate race in America.
In the end, her relationship with her son teaches Susanne to understand her own troubled childhood and to forgive and care for her own aging parents. Susanne comes to realize how, time and time again, all families have to learn to adopt one another.

Perhaps a good story, not a great narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book very soon stops being an adoption story and goes all over the place
How could the performance have been better?
I honestly couldn't decide whether this narrator is a real person or a very sophisticated robot

    Publisher's Summary:
What does it mean to grow up with pink bits between your legs? Writer Kat George takes you on a journey of self-discovery from the moment you're pushed out of a vagina, to the moment you realize you have one, and the ongoing struggle of figuring out what it all means. From her first period, to sex in a hostel cloakroom, to fully lucid cervical biopsies, Kat's charming, sometimes painful yet hilarious stories of feminine exploration will have you giggling, squirming, and hopefully feeling a little bit less alone when you're face-to-face with your own sexuality.

I enjoyed this book. it was a quick read and quite humerous, but mostly it was just one woman's rant about life. I enjoyed the authors relatability.
    Five Stars
    Hillarious and quirky
    Pink Bits: A Review!
If you're my brother, the first/only thing you'll want to know is that you're paying 2.99 dollars to laugh repeatedly, which I feel is a pretty good value (my brother is really concerned with value).
If you're not my brother: I've been reading Kat George's work for a bit now, when and where I see it popping up on the internet. I've always enjoyed her work because her honesty and wit and candor always a) made me laugh and b) translated into words that I felt I should have been hearing from people in my life, but never really have. That continues here with Pink Bits and its 11 essays. Pink Bits provides a look into the chronology of Kat George's life and a glimpse (sometimes a very close glimpse) into her growth into someone who could write and, more importantly, publish a book as nakedly honest as Pink Bits. I'm being vague about the exact content because, while the description gives you a hint, it isn't what happens that necessarily matters but how Kat George writes about it and the fact that she is writing about it (and that you're reading it). I should mention here that I'm a male (and a Millennial), which, given the nature of the book, might be worth disclosing. I'm going to avoid getting excessively confessional here (<3 u internet) by simply stating that female or not, Millennial or not, if you've ever struggled with your self-image or self-direction or sexuality in any way (which should be pretty much all of you) then I think there's something here for you. You're not alone, and Kat George is here to help illuminate the journey from life being a series of embarrassments to life being this weird, dumb, fun adventure where stuff happens and you can, if so inclined, laugh the entire time.
    Also, it's $2.99 and funny.
Couldn't put it down, absolute gold from Kat George
As a teacher, I'd love to be able to give a copy of this to every teenage girl I teach. Kat's stories of her teenage and early adult days are a beautiful funny retrospective. I have been a fan of Kat's work for sometime, and followed her since her early days of writing for Thought Catalog, this collection of essays were easy to read and made a hellish plane ride somewhat bearable.
I'd recommend this to girls and guys alike. From a man's perspective, it's always enlightening to read about what going on inside a girl's head.
I read one of these chapters out to friends over breakfast, and all they could come out with was "who the hell is this girl?" I think that about sums it up.
we need more books like this
    So great.

    Title: Doctor's Notes
    Author: Rosemary Leonard
    Narrator: Kirsty Besterman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-13-14
    Publisher: Headline Digital
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
BBC Breakfast's Dr Rosemary Leonard shares more incredible stories from her career as a GP. 'I'm in the wrong job,' I said to our practice nurse, 'I should definitely have been a detective.' For Dr Rosemary Leonard, a day in her GP's surgery is full of unexplained ailments and mysteries to be solved.
From questions of paternity to apparently drug-resistant symptoms, these mysteries can sometimes take a while to get to the bottom of, especially when they are of a more intimate nature. In her second book about life in her London surgery, Dr Rosemary recalls some of her most puzzling cases...and their rather surprising explanations.
    Members Reviews:
Maybe I wasn't her target audience
I dunno ...the doctor and I just didn't bond, as she came across a bit too self-impressed for me. Guess she realizes that "sex sells", since the first case is about a man's disappearing penis, with others focusing on pregnancy (three patients, same father), a "routine" pap smear that turned out more difficult than expected due to multiple piercings ("... like a scrapyard down there."), and one where a woman learns NOT to mix Dettol (US: Lysol, I think) in her bath water.
Not sorry I bought it, but not sorry the first book isn't available as an audio either. This was plenty. Afterwards, I watched a clip of Dr. Leonard, finding the narrator got the voice down nearly exactly.
    Be disappointed......very disappointed.
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Somebody who hasn't worked in the NHS, specifically in Primary Care in GP surgeries
Has Doctor's Notes put you off other books in this genre?
I am a retired Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner of 20 years experience who misses her career and who loves a bit of a reminder of what used to be. However, if any of the GP's I worked with had this attitude, I would have reported them to the BMA! I'm not sure if it was the slightly arch and hectoring delivery but Dr Leonard came across as judgemental, bullying and as having scant regard for confidentiality within the practice. I'm pretty sure that this would not be the case in real life but I was concerned that anyone listening to this who had similar problems would be put off seeing their own GP for fear of the above. Additionally, I felt that Dr Leonard expressed shock and surprise at incidents which are quite common occurrences in General Practice, and that if she really had worked in a Sexual Health clinic in London for some years then she had retained a very low shock threshold! The stereotypical characterisations of "gay sexual experimenter" and "overweight drinker" and "hippy with piercings" et al felt, at times almost offensive. I felt disheartened by this book whereas other books in this genre make me nostalgic or teach me things I did not know. I like to be moved by the care and concern that health care professionals feel for their clients, not invited to laugh at the "stupidity" of people who are overweight, or have sexual or other health problems. In other places it came across as a (very) thinly disguised government health promotion message.
How could the performance have been better?
I felt that that Kirsty Besterman portrayed Dr Leonard as being quite cold, brisk and superior, and this may have skewed the tone of the book.

Very touching to read the stories of people with arms reaching out to take in those precious animals in need. Thank you to those willing and giving hearts that care for God's creatures that have been harmed by others -- God bless you one and all.
    Bosties found!
Absolutely loved the stories of adopted Boston Terriers. We have a dear little girl who has brought so much joy to our lives and it was fun to see how those prescious Bosties that are lost or mistreated find "forever homes" where they too are loved!
    Wonderful stories!
This book is heartwarming, especially if you own an adopted Boston. I gave it four stars because it is written to that audience alone. I'm not sure Doberman owners would enjoy it as much as I did. Still, a sweet homage to a very sweet breed. I love my Boston, and always will. Thanks to the author!
    Rescue and adoption
Have loved Boston terriers my whole life. Never had one. Learned so much from this book of short stories of Boston Terriers who were rescued and adopted. Our family has adopted and rescued Pitbull terriers for years. Pitbulls are close relatives of the Boston. However, never knew that so many little Bostons are in need of good homes. I hope i can adopt a Boston someday. Highly recommend this book for any dog lover.
    Five Stars
What a wonderful book! A must read for every Boston Terrier owner

    insightful
As an aspiring medical professional I always appreciate someone willing to share their story. Hearing from the patients perspective allows me to understand their motivation. Not having similar issues, it was very insightful to hear the ideas and actions that she took, that I never would have thought of. I also enjoy the explanation of procedures and medications, as many with fertility issues are likely subject to similar treatments. Overall easy listen and entertaining.

In her world, farting is so much more interesting than phonics, dam-building trumps damsels in distress any day and, astonishingly, she now instinctively knows the difference between a Frontloader and a JCB. MOB Rule is the funny, honest and eye-opening account of Hannah's experiences as a Mother of Boys. Supplemented by recipes, quizzes, mnemonics and mysteries, it is the indispensible guide for anyone who finds themselves adrift on a sea of testosterone, wondering when the lifeboat is going to show up. You may be outnumbered, your face may be frazzled and your toe-nails black and bare, but know that, far from being alone, you're part of a very special club. Welcome to...the MOB!
    Members Reviews:
A Must for Parents of Boys!
If you could sum up MOB Rule in three words, what would they be?
    A LOL book!
What other book might you compare MOB Rule to and why?
The Berenstain Bears Baby book, which was also a hilarious look at rearing children! I think it's out of print now.
Which character as performed by Lesley Parkin was your favorite?
I thought Lesley did a fantastic job with all of the characters. She is really versatile, and is one of my favorite narrators. I look for books that she has narrated. She performed the children really well.
Whats an idea from the book that you will remember?
All of the acronyms! My husband and I refer to everyone using the same acronyms!
    Any additional comments?
I really thought this book was hilarious! I laughed out loud all the way through! After raising 6 boys, we could really empathize!!
Perhaps I'm missing something - this is hard work
What disappointed you about MOB Rule?
I have made it to chapter 4 but this was hard going! As the mother of 4, I appreciate some of the things they were trying to get across but really, it's either irrelevant ( if you don't have kids) or preaching - in a laboured, slow and painful style of writing and reading, to the converted. It just comes across as semi-organised moaning!
What will your next listen be?
The Brentford Triangle - something different, quick paced and enthusiastic.
Would you be willing to try another one of Lesley Parkins performances?
I would be very reluctant to pick another book read by this person
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    not really!
    Any additional comments?
I hate not completing books but this was driving me into a depression!

Mr. Huntress gives an exceptional Christian testimony of God's faithfulness in personal hardships. I appreciate his unwavering stand for Christ.
and recommend this book to those who want a deeper walk ...
I appreciated Rick Huntress's story of how God worked in his life. Sometimes, it takes drastic measures to bring us to where God wants us to be. Rick had to learn, as we all should, to let God control his life. Before his accident, he lived for himself and neglected his relationship with God. He became very thankful for the accident, because it brought him to the point he had always wanted to be with God. I was challenged by his attitudes, and recommend this book to those who want a deeper walk with their Heavenly Father.
