    Publisher's Summary:
A brand new eight-part remake of the lost archive drama A Case for Paul Temple, starring Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson.
From 1938 to 1968 crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his Fleet Street journalist wife Steve solved case after case in one of BBC Radios most popular series. Now the glamorous duo return to the airwaves to break a mysterious drug-running gang.
Post-war London is buzzing with speculation about the deaths of ten young drug addicts within the space of just one week. The police are desperate to cut off supplies of heroin and cocaine to the capital, but they are struggling. So Sir Graham Forbes turns to Paul Temple. By fast car and police launch, on deserted houseboats and midnight beaches, in dodgy East End pubs and smart West End restaurants, braving booby traps, bullets and blazing houses, Paul and Steve pursue the ruthless and feared drug dealer known only as Valentine.
This new production for BBC Radio 4 uses the original scripts, vintage sound effects and much of the original incidental music from the missing 1946 production. As far as possible it is a technical and stylistic replica of how that production might have sounded if its recording had survived.

    Lost story lives again
This is a new recording of a Paul Temple story which had been lost from the archives.
Using many of the sound effects used in old recordings together with some pleasing performances by the actors, this production should appeal to fans of the series.
The producers have taken their time to make this enjoyable to listen to. They have even included resumes of the previous chapter, just in case you need to stop listening and come back to it. Crawford Logan as Paul and Gerda as Steve are actors whose voices are most suited to their roles. There is not a bad performance in the entire cast. Allowing for a few cliched accents here and there. As with most of the paul temple series, you get lulled into cozy chats about country houses and pink gins, and then suddenly somebody is found dead. You need to concentrate or you miss the important bits.
Enjoyable if you like Old Time Radio Mysteries.
Having cut my teeth on the "Golden Age of Radio" in America I have always loved this genre and have come to especially enjoy the BBC's production of the Paul Temple series. Though I feel Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury make a better sounding Paul and Steve, Crowford Logan and Gerda Stevenson do a very fine job in this episode. In my opinion the BBC production of this series far out ranks anything done on this side of the pond. The sound effects are excellent and the dialogue is fast and crisp.
On the reality side of things Francis Durbridge seems to have had one basic receipt for his stories and each episode is not that different from another. There is also the matter that realistically the "Yard" hardly needs a writer to solve all the major crimes in Britain. That being said, if you're able to shift your mind back into a simpler time and just want to relax with a very fine production of old time radio entertainment, then this series will not disappoint.
Old time radio plus British drama mostly works
I'm a big fan of British drama and old time radio. I think we use the visual world far too much, and audio allows more scope for immagination. I have one of the original Paul Temple recordings.

    Amazing except...
    Any additional comments?
Why wouldn't they break this series into tracks as opposed to lumping it all into one giant file??? They have done this with the past stories but with this one its just one, 9 hour long track! BOOOOOOO with this absurd exception, its an awesome recording.
A Must for the Holmes Fan
Derek Jacobi is to the audio Holmes what Jeremy Brett was to the video - absolute perfection! Whether you listen to one or many, these stories are a wonderful respite from the modern world. Holmes is enigmatic, Watson is lovable, and the plots - though indisputably dated - continue to be intriguing and satisfying. If you know the tales well, vaguely, or not at all, "The Memoires" is one of the best collections to choose and this is the very best narrator. It's elementary!
Derek Jacobi is the best Sherlock narrator
Great stories are even greater when an outstanding actor like Derek Jacobi reads them... he interprets the voices and subtext in such a warm an engaging way you can listen to these mysteries over and over again.
    memoirs of sherlock holmes, dramatised
this was a very good introduction to audible books for me...I enjoyed the quality, and ease of listening immensely...thank you audible!
    Wonderful stories, wonderful reading.
Derek Jacobi's performance is excellent as usual. His marvelous reading of these classics has inspired me to enjoy the entire Holmes canon.

Excellent finish to a classic series.
If you could sum up Rumpoles Last Case in three words, what would they be?
    Best ending imaginable
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Hard to say without spoiling it all for others. Sorry.
Which character as performed by Patrick Tull was your favorite?
    Silly question. OK,,um Rumpole?
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Jeez. Rumpole, First Blood?
    Any additional comments?
Yes. This is my real recommendation/review. I've been a fan of Rumpole for about forty years and I had never heard/read this before. I'm so very glad that I finally did. A wonderful last chapter that would please anybody; particularly fans. Perfect.
    Great book
Loved it. Narrator made for a very enjoyable read. Reminded me of the TV actor.
Patrick Tull is a brilliant Rumpole
This is a great listen thanks to Patrick Tull, who is barely distinguishable from the original, definitive Rumpole (Leo McKern). I recommend seeking out his versions of John Mortimer's classic stories wherever possible. For some reason only two of the Rumpole books that Mr Tull has read are available on Audible UK; another four can be downloaded from Audible's US site, but only if you have access to an American credit card. It would be great if Audible could sort out anomalies like this. The author, publisher and narrator are the same for all six books, so why are some of the titles not permitted to cross the Atlantic?

    WARNING: NOT THE COMPLETE NOVEL
This is a dramatization of the novel. They take the major parts and turned it into a sort of hour and a half soap opera. It's good acting and it captures the main plot points, but if you're looking for the entire novel The Big Sleep, this is not it. The full novel version is six hours long, narrated by Elliot Gould, and Audible doesn't carry it yet.
    like old time radio
THERE ARE A SERIES OF THESE DRAMATISED ADAPTATIONS OF CHANDLER'S BEST KNOWN WORKS, AND THIS - LIKE THE REST - IS A DELIGHTFUL LISTEN. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THESE ARE DRAMATISATIONS OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL, WITH A FULL CAST PERFORMING VARIOUS ROLES THROUGHOUT THE PRODUCTION. LIKE LISTENING TO AN OLD TIME RADIO PRODUCTION, ONLY BETTER, BECAUSE THIS PRODUCTION NEVER LOSES THE ATMOSPHERE OF CHANDLER'S PROSE. BRAVO!
The Big Sleep Refers to Death--Now I Know
I bought this by accident thinking it was the novel. I thoughtoh well, and listened to it anyway. It was a pleasant surprisenot bad at all. Characters are well demarcated and the actors charge their roles with vigor. (Let's face it, Chandler's dramatis personae are written as over-the-top.) It's uncensored old-time radio. The politically incorrect words are left in. The price is cheap so it's worth the dough. Ignore the naysayers who howl at the moon over what was left out from the book. Listen and enjoy.
this is a superficial dramatization of the plot. plots were his only weak suit. it leaves out every spark of his brilliance
missing is The word play, the poetry, the rhythm, the social commentary, and oh yeah, entire city of Los Angeles. his coulf be s grocers convention in Kansas. do yourself a favor stick with the more expensive brillisntly rendered full text versions.
    Better than the movie.
What did you love best about Raymond Chandler: The Big Sleep (Dramatised)?
It followed the original Chandler story. Performances were spot on.
    Any additional comments?
Like all Chandler books, hard to put down.

    Fabulous book
What a great book, I never saw the ending coming. Great read , and exciting ending
    Well worth the credit
I had read other reviews of this novel before purchasing and so was looking forward to a taut psychological thriller/ I wasn't disappointed, but the only reason for 4 stars instead of five is that the thriller part took quite a while to play out. The premise is unsettling: a woman has a rare form of amnesia that means she wakes up each morning not knowing who she is and remembering nothing of her past. I wasn't sure how the author would be able to play that out, but she uses the device of having the character start keeping a journal, so the reader's memories can start to accumulate even if the character's do not. Knowing that this was a psychological thriller, or would eventually turn into one, I didn't fully trust any of the characters, but when the twist came it was played out very well. I think it is well worth a credit.
    Great Idea - Disappointing Execution
    Its preposterous.
The idea is a fascinating one I must say; waking up everyday not knowing anything about yourself or your past or your life but the execution of this great idea was a big disappointment.
I found that the first part just dragged on too long. Ok, I get it, I understand the premise now just get on with the story already. When the action does finally pick up in the third part and the story goes from mystery to thriller, it also goes from hmm, whats going to happen next to Oh please, gimme a break!
I also did not care for the narration. The constant frantic on the verge of tears tone wore me down.
    Like watching paint dry
You could easily listen to the first couple of chapters and the last couple of chapters, skip the whole middle and not miss a thing. The author hooked me from the start but then only fed me a drop of information every hour or so. Very slow to build a weak plot that was in place and predictable from the first chapter. Lots of repetition and very little substance. Unlike others, I did not find the narrator to be a problem, I thought she did a pretty good job. Overall the book was just O.K.

    Exploring the nature of Time
Priestly was interested in the nature of time and wrote on this topic as well as social justice.
It was good to hear this Classic Radio Theatre production. Well done.
I suppose like Huxley, the writing expresses ideas and asks readers to think.
    Not So Much Mystery
This dramatization of Priestley's play is not so much mystery as examination of society. There is a denouement, perhaps anticipated, but still analytical.
    A smug Inspector Galls
All but the Inspector in this recording, are wonderful to listen to. The recording is at times, let down by the incessantly smug monotone voice of the actor playing the Inspector. The Inspector should be a mystery man who with his charm and magnetism, manages to coerce information out of the otherwise reticent family. Not a judgemental one-dimensional bore. That being said, the other characters are played beautifully and it is all in all, an enjoyable romp.
    Very disappointing.
If you want a ripping good detective story, this is not it. If, on the other hand, you enjoy an author beating you over the head with a moralistic two-by-four at the expense of an actual plot, you'll really enjoy this one.
I listened to half of it then gave up in disgust. The story seems to be merely a vehicle for the author's pontificating on the Evils Of Class in British society. Even a very good cast of performers was not enough to save it.
Needless to say, I will not be picking up anything by this author again.
    GCSE text
Bought for my son who studied this as a GCSE text, I listened to this myself and enjoyed the dramatic interpretation. My mother also enjoyed it so I would suggest it is a classic which appeals to a range of listeners.

    Members Reviews:
    Stop The Music!
I wonder if the companies that produce these recordings have any understanding of their customers?
Good reading by Bronson Pinchot, but badly marred by the insertion of what I guess is supposed to be "creepy atmospheric" music at the beginning and end of each story. I do not understand this practice, and I don't know of anyone who is a regular listener who thinks it adds anything but annoyance to these productions.
This collection has the three Dupin stories, and also includes the very little known "Thou Art Man," which is not a Dupin story at all. A better selection might have been "The Gold Bug" which is a "Dupin" story, but with "Dupin" changed into William Legrand.
Please don't buy this audiobook, it's very bad
This is definitely a very bad audiobook, in fact the narrator, Mr.Pinchot, simulates a kind of French accent, that sounds terrible and it's totally annoying. I understand that he wants to mimic the main character of the novels, Mr. Dupin, but unfortunately the final result is very bad. It sounds very odd, please don't buy this audiobook.
    Wordy
I wanted a more condenced version, I guess I knew the story line and wanted to be refreshed.
    No comprehension of Poe
Bronson Pinchot reads as if he does not know what any of the words mean, I regret this, should have gone with the older recordings.

    Members Reviews:
Good story, narration fell a little short
I like this series about Sarah Brandt, who is a midwife in early 1900's New York City, and her friend, detective Frank Malloy. It is well written, usually historically informative and always has a good mystery.
This time, Victoria Thompson took on a controversial issue at the time, whether it was more helpful to teach deaf children to sign or read lips and speak. I do not know very much about it, except to say it evokes a great deal of compassion in me, trying to think through what I would want for my own child or family member. Thompson has handled this topic in a way that provided a lot of information about the issues concerned, or at least how it might have been viewed then, and combined it with some insight into the very ugly topic of of eugenics. The story and mystery are good, as usual, but I was fascinated by the topic. It really left me with a lot of things to think about.
Sadly, I felt the narration detracted from the otherwise very good story. Often reading too slowly, sometimes just the voice quality was off-putting. Since I liked the book so much, I would tell others to get it and listen to it. It is worth the credit despite the less than stellar narration.
    Flat
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator was god-awful. Half the time, she sounded like she was doing Munchkin impressions. Frank talked painfully slow and came off as sleazy. And the vocal fries!!!!! Terrible.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
About as impressed as the beginning.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Suzanne Toren?
Most any other professional voice talent would probably suffice.
Could you see Murder on Lexington Avenue being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not without heavy rewrite. Most of the book takes place in a couple of rooms. The stars should be actors trying to branch out from sitcoms.
    Any additional comments?
A man who faints upon learning that his mother had an affair. A detective who speculates to a family member who the culprit might be. A midwife and a mother who abandons her practice and her child to spend days with a pampered rich woman.

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation starring Peter Sallis as the great Belgian detective. Tyrannical millionaire Simeon Lee has been estranged from most of his family for years. Does he want to clear up past misunderstandings or cause fresh mischief?
Before they can find out, a deafening crash is heard overhead. Rushing upstairs, they discover a shocking sight: Simeon Lee is lying in a pool of blood, his throat cut. But it is the strangest thing - the door has been locked from the inside and there is no trace of the murderer.

    Members Reviews:
    Amateurish, uneven production
This production is so badly done for so many reasons that I hardly know where to start with this review. I'll try using highlights:
    1. Hercule Poirot speaks with an English accent. The performer makes a poor attempt to mimic a French accent but fails utterly.
    2. One performer does produce a believable French accent. The only problem is that the character speaking that accent is from Spain!
    3. The abridgment is careless and sloppy. Audio fades are used during critical conversations and events, disrupting the continuity. The arrivals and departures of key characters have been removed in several places, making it impossible to know who is and isn't present at the start of any scene.
    4. Hercule Poirot is a minor player. He does nothing but say things like "Yes, curious" and "No, curious" for most of the production. His presence in England is never explained satisfactorily. No time at all is given to his thoughts, emotions, and ideas. Even at the end, when he manufactures his solution, he states facts and evidence he's never discussed or seen in this butchered production.
If you are a fan of Agatha Christie and/or Hercule Poirot, avoid this half-baked BBC attempt to milk the Christie cash cow. The milk is sour.
    Hercule Poirot
I enjoyed this dramatised edition of Hercule Poirot's Christmas. However, I found it strange having Peter Wallis as the lead. All I thought of throughout the audio book was Wallace & Grommit or Clegg from Last of the Summer Wine.
good read. a mystery right until the end.
a true mystery performed to perfection. great to have a dramatised version. can't beat a classic who done it.
    Poirot Solves A Christmas Murder
Another good Agatha Christie mystery solved by Poirot, this time played by Peter Sellers which is a wonderful addition to the collection.
    Poor Poirot
Peter Sallies is unfortunately a very poor Poirot. His accent is a joke. Disastrous performance. Ruins an otherwise excellent Christie.

    Reasonable
Very short dramatisation of one of Agatha Christies greatest novels. Lots of well known voices on here, but it somehow just didn't quite live up to my expectations.
