The first Miss Silver I ever read, and still a fav

This book will not be for everyone. I believe it was first published in 1955 but it reads like something much older, it's aesthetic seems to be 1930's, or even earlier. I love that, but please be warned that it moves slowly, that there is much conversation and little action, and that motivations appear at least on first reading to be wildly different in this book than they are in modern American life. However, as is often the case with Miss Silver, there are aspects of this close examination of people and their relationships and the results of their choices that are just as relevant and timely today as they were when they were written.

Miss Silver, the series sleuth, is the ultimate working lady (lady being the operative word) and she reminds me very much of my grandmother. I adore her for her reserve, her dowdy attire, her resistance to familiarity, her quiet independence, compassion, and shrewd insight. She's a version of Miss Marple (Agatha Christie) and Miss Climpson (Dorothy Sayers) and I love all these independent, intrepid, elderly spinster sleuths with their subtle social camouflage that causes wrongdoers not to take them seriously until it is far too late. Miss Silver is portrayed with less humor than either of the other two ladies but she is a sister under the skin all the same, being a quietly attired and unstoppable force of nature.

I find Patricia Wentworth to be a uniquely period writer who's insights are still relevant today, and I love to spend time with Miss Silver from time to time, especially when life gets chaotic and I need a sense of continuity. I'm thrilled that Audible is brining the entire list to audio book form, and thrilled that Diana Bishop is reading them all, I can't imagine Miss Silver read by anyone else. What a treat!

Wentworth Still Shines after 12 books!

This is my 12th book by Patricia Wentworth and she is still a winner....every mystery is

very different and multi-layered. Love the narrator .I have purchased all that are available

from Audible and plan to take my time reading them to make them last.Hope Audible

is able to get all of her books .....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The author's customary character development is missing, and we are left with Ms Silver and her detective endlessly discussing case details and possibilities. I found I was in a fog of Mettie and Maggie and Renie, sometimes called Irene, to further complicate.

Great performance

Where does The Murder at the Vicarage rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I am working my way through the Agatha Christie titles on Audible. Richard E Grant's performance is superb. Great pace and characterisation. A real period piece of a performance. Top of my list of audiobooks so far.

The vicar. Not nearly as naive as you might first think.

As ever, where Miss Marple explains 'who did it'.

Where does The Murder at the Vicarage rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is one of the best audio books if you are a Christie fan. There are numerous versions all of which I have listened to with terrific casts but Richard Grant's narration is superb! His voice makes for the perfect "Vicar" - and the nuances of the other characters are portrayed superbly.

The Vicar! He is so perceptive, of others and himself!

No I haven't but I am going to search for some more definitely.

I am not sure "Christie" comes into the category of laugh or cry but she does always have some underlying humour floating about in her characters!

Richard. E.Grant is a perfect narrator. I have listened to this often and it never loses its appeal. Great story and beautifully read.

Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933) was an American author, most famous for his mystery novels concerning the Chinese American detective, Charlie Chan. Several of his works were turned into movies during his career. Although fearful that he would never be able to break from his Charlie Chan-mold, Biggers continued writing the mysteries due to their popularity and his attachment to the character. Said Biggers, "Yet here I am, and with me Charlie Chan. Thank heaven he is amiable, philosophical - a good companion. For I know now that he and I must travel the rest of the journey together."

A- entry in A+ series

Compared with the other entries in the Charlie Chan mystery series, Charlie Chan Carries On is not the strongest; compared with the heap of popular American detective fiction of the past century, it is still pretty darn good, so let's give it an A-.

This is the 5th of the six books in the series, published in 1930. Author Biggers took an artistic risk by starting out with a story that belongs to Scotland Yard Inspector Duff, an old friend of Charlie's. A member of an American-based world tour is found murdered in London. The members are wealthy and well-connected and the Embassy releases Duff's circle of suspects to continue on their way. So, he tries with uneven results to keep up. There are more deaths. When the ship arrives at Honolulu, a good 2/3 of the way through the book, Charlie joins what is left of the touring group for the last leg to San Francisco, to fix what went wrong in the investigation up to that point.

So, not giving us Charlie's company up front was a risk that was okay but not great. The travel group is large and we have to keep up with several names and stereotypical characters--though by the end, we can keep them straight. Typically, Biggers starts with stereotypes but spins them, but not so much here. The tourists are the 1%ers of 1930, apparently untouched by the events of October 1929, about which Charlie makes a passing remark. Biggers also relies on his own formula that always includes a bright ingénue and her suitor.

Her reading was very measured with a little pause between each word, like she was aiming at an audience of octogenarians. And why didn't they pick an English reader??

Did The House of Stairs inspire you to do anything?

Stop reading it...but I persevered.

This novel was all tarnished glitz, unconvincing character development, and it appeared that by the end, even the author was bored with it, but not to say I want go back and buy and listen to some of her earlier work. Ruth Rendell is a wonderful writer, but this is not her best work.

I have always liked Ruth Rendell's books and will continue to recommend her to others. I will not recommend Annie Wauters as a narrator. I have been much more impressed with Jenny Sterlin, Nigel Anthony, Julian Glover, and Davina Porter, who all narrate Ruth Rendell's books very well.

The moment at which we realize the protagonist's relationship with Belle was romantic.

Murder Takes No Holiday

Even on holiday, the peripatetic Mrs. Beatrice Bradley (now elevated to Dame Beatrice) cannot take a vacation from murder. While on the out-of-the-way and entirely fictional Canary island of Hombres Muertos (Dead Men), Mrs. Bradley takes a visit to a tourist attraction that consists of 23 dead, mummified prehistoric kings (which gives the island its name). But there's a 24th dead man, stabbed in the back, there -- Karl Emden, a womanizer who had managed to "go native" in the few months he'd been on Hombres Muertos. Considering that his demise came almost immediately after Mrs. Bradley's arrival, the psychiatrist and British Home Office consultant takes a very close look at the party that disembarked on the island along with her as the most likely culprits.

That party includes a nerve-patient named Telham and his pretty sister, a 20-something widow named Caroline Lockerby, whose husband died in very strange circumstances; the pale Clun, recently released after serving a sentence for manslaughter; and a hellion of a boy named Clement Drashleigh and his overly permissive parents. Mrs. Bradley also casts a jaundiced eye on the locals: an avid bird-watcher named Mrs. Angel, who's sure to prove anything but angelic; a botanical enthusiast and pathological prevaricator named Peterhouse; the fiery hotel owner and his daughter, and a band of soft-hearted bandits led by Tío Caballo and José el Lupe.

When Mrs. Bradley's self-styled secretary and general dogsbody, Laura Gavin (née Menzies) and her infant son Hamish join Mrs. Bradley on Hombres Muertos, the plot gets even better and more humorous. The Twenty-Third Man has plenty of twists and turns as Mrs. Bradley and Laura poke around both on the island and back in England. The novel ranks as one of the best of Gladys Mitchell's novels -- and that's saying a lot! Don't miss this excellent mystery!

This is an easy going mystrey novel, not to taxing on the mind. However, it does get annoying with the constant referrals to Mr Parageter and his associates. Very repetitive.

Dame Beatrice Bradley is taking an extended holiday on the island of Hombres Muertos - the Island of Dead Men. One of her first expeditions is to a cave which contains the mummified bodies of twenty three kings. Except that one of the kings appears to be taller than the others and attracts Beatrice's attention.

No. I enjoyed it although the Christie stories without her main detectives are not my favorites.

Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors. I have listened to many of her books and will continue to do so. It is my comfort food listen.

Not very versatile

The story feels dated but it is a quick listen. It is a mystery not a murder mystery. The lead chaRacter is standard Christie but pleasant enough. Recommended for diehard Christie fans.
