    Narrator: Lindy Nettleton
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 14 hrs

    Release date: 01-15-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 61 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The highly anticipated second novel in the charming, sharply plotted Victorian crime series starring a detective duo to rival Holmes and Watson
125 Gower Street, 1882. Sidney Grice once had a reputation as London's most perspicacious personal detective. But since his last case led an innocent man to the gallows, business has been light. Listless and depressed, Grice has taken to lying in the bath for hours, emerging in the evenings for a little dry toast and a lot of tea. Usually a voracious reader, he will pick up neither book nor newspaper. He has not even gathered the strength to reinsert his glass eye. His ward, March Middleton, has been left to dine alone.
Then an eccentric member of a Final Death Society has the temerity to die on his study floor. Finally Sidney and March have an investigation to mount - an investigation that will draw them to an eerie house in Kew and to the mysterious Baroness Foskett.

    Great story marred by gratuitousness
I am definitely enjoying this series with one large caveat: I find the gory descriptions on the gratuitous side. I'm a seasoned reader of mysteries and police procedurals in all their gory detail, and I also recognize the importance of historical accuracy, however ugly. Still, in my opinion, the author seems almost to revel in prolonged and unnecessary gruesomeness.
Furthermore, while I acknowledge that I'm a wimp when it comes to descriptions of animal cruelty, it seems to me that even a more hardened reader might find the salacious (and relatively frequent) depictions of such incidents in these books a bit over the top. Kasasian makes his point early on, no need to belabor it.
It's a shame, because it mars for me what is, in all other ways, a terrific new series.
Read "The Mangle Street Murders" first
It's needed for context, otherwise you'll miss a lot here.
That having been said, this book proves a good sequel, though my fourth star includes Lindy Nettleton's awesome narration; the plot itself is really three stars, especially as there are regular flashbacks to March's time in India that detracted for me, especially in audio where they appeared almost randomly without any notice. Still, it's great to see Sidney and March's characters grow (though Sidney does his best to hide that). One of the best scenes was March (who had been raised in India) bravely facing an English dish of "curried vegetables" that bore as much relation to the original as passing off a can of Dinty Moore beef stew as "homemade Russian stroganoff."
Shocker of an ending makes the next book a Must Read!
    Enjoyed this book.
I love the characters in this book. The relationship between the main characters is very interesting. I hope there is another sequel.
Better than the first go around, but not quite there yet
I read the first in this series and thought that book was awful. It was a bad parody of Sherlock Holmes. I decided to give the author one more try, and while this book is better than the first,?it remains a bad parody of Sherlock Holmes with a couple of love stories thrown in for no apparent reason.
Grice's at his best or does that mean his worst?
Grice is in a funk after the debacle he made in the Mangled Street Murders (MSM). As a man who thinks very highly of himself and equates intelligence with social status and gender.

    Publisher's Summary:
Her name is Orfamay Quest and she's come all the way from Manhattan, Kansas, to find her missing brother Orrin. Or leastways that's what she tells PI Philip Marlowe, offering him a measly 20 bucks for the privilege.
But Marlowe's feeling charitable - though it's not long before he wishes he wasn't so sweet. You see, Orrin's trail leads Marlowe to luscious movie starlets, uppity gangsters, suspicious cops, and corpses with ice picks jammed in their necks. When trouble comes calling, sometimes it's best to pretend to be out...
Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 and moved to England with his family when he was 12. He attended Dulwich College, Alma Mater to some of the 20h century's most renowned writers. Returning to America in 1912, he settled in California, worked in a number of jobs, and later married.
It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing and his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine "Black Mask" in 1933, followed six years later by his first novel. The Big Sleep introduced the world to Philip Marlowe, the often imitated but never-bettered hard-boiled private investigator. It is in Marlowe's long shadow that every fictional detective must stand - and under the influence of Raymond Chandler's addictive prose that every crime author must write.
    Critic Reviews:
"Anything Chandler writes about grips the mind from the first sentence" (Daily Telegraph)
"One of the greatest crime writers, who set standards others still try to attain" (Sunday Times)
"Chandler is an original stylist, creator of a character as immortal as Sherlock Holmes" (Anthony Burgess)

    The Little Simile
This novel used similes that were long and round and thin, like a rattailed file that has been ground smooth.
This novel is a sort of sad whisper, like a mortitian asking for a down payment.
This novel had a low lingering voice with a sort of moist caress in it like a damp bath towl.
This novel felt like a nice leg.
This novel was brought up straight, like the wicked foreman of the Lazy Q.
This novel sounded like somebody putting aways saucepans where I was.
    This novel flashed like lightening.
This novel burned like dry ice.
This novel bounced me downstairs like a basketball.
This novel made my brain feel like a bucket of wet sand.
This novel spoke to me like a six-hundred dollar funeral.
This novel made a sort of high keening noise, like a couple of pansies fighting for a piece of silk.
This novel grew on me like scum on a water tank.
This novel burned like a hot iron.
This novel gave me the creeps. Like petting snakes.
This novel felt like four years on a road gang.
This novel had a jaw like a park bench.
This novel had eyes cloudy and gret like freezing water.
This novel was sad, like a fallen cake.
This novel's similies poured like water through the floodgagtes of a dam.
This novel fell on silence like a tired head on a swansdown pillow.
This novel made me laugh like a child trying to be supercilious at a playroom tea party.
    One twist too far
Going back and listening to these classics has been really fun. This is the weakest of the Chandler books so far. There is so much misdirection that by the end I am not sure I really cared "who done it".
One note about audio versions of Chandler. Ray Porter, this narrator, is great.

    Publisher's Summary:
The fourth installment in the legendary Matt Helm thrillers.
Matt Helm, code name Eric, is sent to extract a female agent working as a stripper in a bar in Mexico. When she is killed before Helm can complete his mission, he finds himself teamed up with the woman's sister as he fights to save the lives of a group of scientists and American officials.
Originally released in the era of the James Bond novels, the Matt Helm novels were considered grittier and more realistic than Bond, garnering them critical praise and an ardent audience.
    Members Reviews:
Great just not my favorite in the Matt Helm series
What did you love best about The Silencers?
The verbal conflicts/dances. I love the mental chess games of some of the conversations in the book.
What other book might you compare The Silencers to and why?
All the other Matt Helm books for obvious reasons.
What about Stefan Rudnickis performance did you like?
He always comes off as someone talking about his past not a narrator telling a cool story. It makes it more intriguing. It is like listening to a war vet talk about his time in the service instead of a teacher reading a book to you. Amazing.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Matt interrogating another character. The writer did a great job of making Matt VERY intelligent but not omniscient. You never feel 100% on the outcome of his encounters so it feeds the tension and realism of the world . He feels very efficient but not Godly. Like a chess player.
    Any additional comments?
Story wise this was not one of my favorites. It is written very well. It all felt critical and believable. But the game itself did not grip me as much as it did in the other books ( im listening to them all in order). The grander scale of this one highlighted Matt's "that aint my job" attitude and fleshed him out more.
So far the conflicts have been a bit more intimate and focused. I suppose the change made it less enjoyable for me personally. It felt less like a rubicks cube and more like a big jigsaw puzzle.
Still good. Just a low point for the quality ive seen so far.

    Title: Calamity Town
    Subtitle: Ellery Queen, Book 16
    Author: Ellery Queen
    Narrator: Richard Waterhouse
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-19-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Looking for trouble, Ellery Queen descends on a small town.
At the tail end of the long summer of 1940, there is nowhere in the country more charming than Wrightsville. The Depression has abated, and for the first time in years the city is booming. There is hope in Wrightsville, but Ellery Queen has come looking for death.
The mystery author is hoping for fodder for a novel, and he senses the corruption that lurks beneath the apple pie façade. He rents a house owned by the town's first family, whose three daughters star in most of the local gossip. One is fragile, left at the altar three years prior, never to recover. Another is engaged to the city's rising political star, an upright man who's already boring her. And then there's Lola, the divorced, bohemian blacksheep. Together, they make a volatile combination. Once he sees the ugliness in Wrightsville, Queen sits back - waiting for the crime to come to him.
    Members Reviews:
    Atmospheric story, small town murder
The early Queen tales were mostly puzzles. The middle period Queens are very different, focusing on characterization and the psychology of the characters involved. Calamity Town is set in the fictional New England town of Wrightville, and Ellery immerses himself with the Wright family and their troubles. Here he is not the aloof reasoner, but someone who cares deeply about the family, especially young Patricia Wright. There are, it seems, two types of narrators of audio books: the ones who simply read the book, and the ones that perform the book, giving each character life. Waterhouse is definitely the former type, but at least he has a pleasant voice and differentiates the different characters a little.
    Great!
Thought i had it figured out pretty early but too many twist and turns later i was still guessing.

    Narrator: Jane McDowell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 39 mins

    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
It was the body of a tall stout man. On his dead face, a handsome pair of gold pince-nez mocked death with grotesque elegance. The body wore nothing else.
Lord Peter Wimsey knew immediately what the corpse was supposed to be. His problem was to find out whose body had found its way into Mr Alfred Thipps' Battersea bathroom.
    Critic Reviews:
"She brought to the detective novel originality, intelligence, energy and wit." (P. D. James)
"I admire her novels . . . she has great fertility of invention, ingenuity and a wonderful eye for detail." (Ruth Rendell)
"She combined literary prose with powerful suspense, and it takes a rare talent to achieve that. A truly great storyteller." (Minette Walters)
    Members Reviews:
    More work on pronunciation please
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have been waiting for a reading of the Lord Peter Wimsey books for a long time and down loaded this with glee. It is the first of the series so it seems that the originators are doing it the right way and starting from the beginning.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator seems to think that the characters all gabble. They are all done in funny voices, at odd pitches and even odder speeds. Yes - Lord Peter's speech is affected and speedy but she really gets him wrong I think.
The worst thing is the lapses in pronunciation. Lord Peters college is Balliol. His time at Oxford is fundamental to the man, the stories and so much of what is to come. It is pronounced Bail - e - ol. The narrator says Bal i ol.
I really worry when she gets to Magdalen, not wanting to be maudlin about it but my expectations are low.
Another is when Lord Peter is looking around the roof of the mansion flats and checks what the narrator calls 'the leeds'. She means 'the leads'; the word comes from the lead used to make the channels and downpipes in traditional buildings, now often stolen.
The lady has a lovely voice. When just narrating it resonates and could do Harriet Vane well later. Meanwhile PLEASE stop gabbling and research the words before launching into the next one?
    Terrible performance
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    The narrator
What didnt you like about Jane McDowells performance?
Her accents are awful, Lord Wimsey sounds like a cockney half the time. She speaks too fast and all the voices sound the same. her voice is also shrill in parts and makes for a very uncomfortable listen. Such a shame as the story was quite good, and should have been funny in parts. I couldn't finish the book. Dreadful
Was Whose Body? worth the listening time?
    No
    Unbearable reader
Sadly, I have no idea if the story is any good because I only lasted about 10 minutes before turning it off. The narrator is absolutely awful. Her voices were all screechy, which grated on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard. I also found it very difficult to follow which character was talking as many of her voices sounded so similar.
Love the story but wrong narrator
This is a great story but using a female narrator for a novel where the lead character and most of the supporting characters are male doesn't make sense. She's clearly a good narrator but not for these stories.

Inspector John Madden - who debuted in River of Darkness - returns in a gripping post-World War II murder mystery. On a quiet afternoon in 1947, retired bank manager Oswald Gibson is shot in the head while fishing. In Scotland, a respectable family doctor is killed in the same manner - and with the same gun. What is the connection? Scotland Yards Detective Inspector Billy Styles and local detective Vic Chivers are baffled until a letter from Gibson is discovered that might shed some light on the case - a letter concerning former Scotland Yard detective John Madden. Despite Maddens legendary memory, he has no recollection of meeting Gibson or any idea of what their relationship might have been. Madden is happily retired from police work, but agrees to help his former protégé Styles and the clues they uncover only deepen the mystery. When a third man is killed in a similar fashion, Madden and Styles find themselves in a race against time to find the killer before another man ends up dead. A smart, intricately plotted mystery, this is the fourth title in the critically acclaimed and much-loved John Madden series.

    He gets better and better....
Rennie Airth, that is. Discovered his first John Madden outing purely by chance and was hooked. Liked the pacing, the historical detailing, the protagonist's character - were people really that civilized back then? - and the narrator's delivery. Usually, serial releases tend to loose there oomph over time and so I approached this, the fourth Madden outing with some trepidation. Wrong! This, imo, is Airth's best book yet. While the "surprise" conclusion was not totally broadly unpredictable, it's carefully crafted unfolding I found to be very believeable and yes, quite touching too. Great narration by McKenzie (of Chief Inspector Bruno fame). Kudos all around!
    More please
Outstanding. I listened to River of Darkness 4 years ago, and have wanted more ever since. I was thrilled to see The Reckoning available. Please please record John Madden books 2 and 3, and make them available to everyone.
    Good listen
Somewhat predictable and could be shortened by a couple of hours but exceeded my expectation and I did enjoy it.
Entertaining without there cookie cutter outline
Great story without the usual cookie cutter outline. Very good who done it with a surprising outline.
    Superb Mystery Writer
I was first introduced to Rennie Airth when I work for a small independent bookseller. I fell in love with his character John Madden and the twists you often don't see coming in the story. This story won't disappoint and as always I learn a little bit more about WWI that I had not given much thought to before. Thank you Mr. Airth for another great story. Excellent narration as well.
