Author: Sophie Hannah

Narrator: Julian Rhind-Tutt

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 10 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-06-16

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective

Publisher's Summary:

Hercule Poirot returns in another brilliant murder mystery that can be solved only by the eponymous Belgian detective and his 'little grey cells'.

'What I intend to say to you will come as a shock....'

Lady Athelinda Playford has planned a house party at her mansion in Clonakilty, County Cork, but it is no ordinary gathering. As guests arrive, Lady Playford summons her lawyer to make an urgent change to her will - one she intends to announce at dinner that night. She has decided to cut off her two children without a penny and leave her fortune to someone who has only weeks to live....

Among Lady Playford's guests are two men she has never met - the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and Inspector Edward Catchpool of Scotland Yard. Neither knows why he has been invited...until Poirot starts to wonder if Lady Playford expects a murderer to strike. But why does she seem so determined to provoke in the presence of a possible killer?

When the crime is committed in spite of Poirot's best efforts to stop it, and the victim is not who he expected it to be, will he be able to find the culprit and solve the mystery?

Following the phenomenal global success of The Monogram Murders, which was published to critical acclaim following a coordinated international launch in September 2014, international best-selling crime writer Sophie Hannah has been commissioned by Agatha Christie Limited to pen a second fully authorised Poirot novel. The new audiobook marks the centenary of the creation of Christie's world-famous detective, Hercule Poirot, introduced in her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

Members Reviews:

Ridiculous plot, badly in need of editing

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Don't know, the plot is ludicrous and the story is endlessly repetitive.

What was most disappointing about Sophie Hannahs story?

The plot. Some of the characterisation is good but they run over the same points again and again ad nauseum. The only thing that makes this a worthwhile purchase is Julian Rhind - Tutt's performance.

What about Julian Rhind-Tutts performance did you like?

Everything. His voices and accents are clearly distinguishable and give you an insight into the individuals character and are very appropriate to the story setting.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Intense disappointment, as a Christie fan I think this book is a travesty.

Any additional comments?

One and a quarter hours to reveal the denouement which could have comfortably been completed in 20 minutes.

Not as good The Monogram Murders

In some respects I loved this novel. The narration was superb, the character development wonderful and the 'feel' of the setting, time and Poirotness of the book were so right! It felt ( in so many respects) like something Agatha Christie could have written, expect she hasn't, and if you scratch the surface of this novel, it is obvious that Dame Agatha's fabulous talent is most definitely lacking. The plot was downright silly, the motive weak and frankly laughable. That I could forgive, to be honest, as Agatha Christie plots can stretch motive thinly too, however Agatha's novels are always robust and solid.

Title: Sherlock Holmes and the Hunt for Jack the Ripper

Author: Gerard Kelly

Narrator: Kevin Theis

Format: Unabridged

Length: 59 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-19-16

Publisher: MX Publishing

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 10 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective

Publisher's Summary:

Many people have asked why the paths of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper never crossed, since the two men were contemporaries in London in 1888. There have even been some scurrilous suggestions that Holmes was himself the Ripper. The paths of the two men did indeed cross. Holmes and Watson knew precisely who the real Ripper was and even where he lived. They also knew exactly what happened to him. If you have the stomach for it, listen and all will be revealed!

Members Reviews:

Not that good.

Holmes wasn't portrayed as being clever, or observant, in fact, the story wasn't "Holmes-like" at all.

Narrator has a deep voice, which is nice but he spoke much too fast. The accents, to me, sounded more like a common class person rather than upper class British like Holmes, Watson and the "Lady."

When I slowed the listening speed so narrator didn't sound rushed, the results were comedic .

Pulse-pounding performance

Expert, exciting narration nearly conceals the thin plot and lack of confrontation. Worth a listen.

Not for audio

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book was not suited as an audiobook, the tone and pace of the story does not come across well when in audio ...the characters did not come alive as the dialogue in the book was best read than spoken

What could James Ellroy have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not put it in audio

Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Hardings performances?

I love Jeff Hardings performances , it was because of him I chose this

You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Titre: La Carrière du mal (Cormoran Strike 3)

Auteur: Robert Galbraith

Narrateur: Lionel Bourguet

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 19 hrs and 5 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 06-08-16

Éditeur: Audiolib

Evaluation: 5 sur 5 sur 12 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective

What did you love best about La Carrière du mal (Cormoran Strike 3)?

a lot of violence towards women

I really enjoyed this book for the narrator's skill and the writer's talent. However, I almost stopped listening because of the detail of psychological abuse towards the killer's adult female victims.

The dealer refuses to provide Holmes with information about the source of the goose, but Holmes observes another man trying to find the same information, and confronts him. Enjoyed this book as much as I have enjoyed all the others in the Mrs. Jeffries series! They are very entertaining and haven't disappointed. Sometimes you can guess who the murderer is but not how they did it- and sometimes you can't "finger" him/her!!!

Members Reviews:

Very Silly

I am usually a fan of this author but this must have been one of her last works, very silly and untenable plot. Only saving grace is her lovely use of language in dialogue.

A Kiwi Christie

A highly enjoyable murder mystery told with flair by James Saxon, who adopts a number of comic accents that really adds to the wit of the story. Marsh writes with similar lively character observation to Agatha Christie. So if you've read all of Christie's books, I highly recommend trying these by Marsh.

Troy and Allen disappointment

Disliked this performance so very much spoilt the book for me hated every moment - sorry should have returned it
