    Great book!
I can usually figure out the solution to most mysteries, but this one kept me guessing until near the end. I really enjoyed this book and its satisfying ending.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
    Adapted by Richard Dinnick.
Young Dr. Mortimer ventures from Devonshire to Baker Street with news of the death of his friend, Sir Charles Baskerville. Can it really be that the grisly legend of the hound of the Baskervilles might have something to do with the case?
Holmes will have none of it, but even he must accept that dark forces are at work. Dark forces that, it seems, Dr. Watson must face alone...afoot!
    Critic Reviews:
"The real revelation is Nicholas Briggs's performance as Holmes. Confident and assured, yet understated, and shot through with just the right amount of emotion, bravado and eccentricity, Briggs has delivered one of the definitive portrayals of the character...along with Rathbone, Brett and Lewellyn." (Mass Movement Magazine)
"Nicholas Briggs and Richard Earl, a formidable, intelligent duo, who make the most of their characters. Watson is especially important in the Big Finish productions, as his narration underpins the story to a greater extent than I can recall in any other such audio drama, and Richard Earl is fully equal to the task. This production of The Hound is nail-bitingly exciting, as it should be...." (The Sherlock Holmes Journal)

    COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it highlights an interesting era in New Orleans history.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
No, there were too many disparate story lines. Switching back and forth broke the tension.
How could the performance have been better?
Mr. Ragland did a good job of portraying the different characters. However, many of the unusual names and places are mispronounced. Having been born in New Orleans and being a lifelong resident of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area, these mispronunciations take me right out of the story. The author got a few things wrong, too. Angola State Penitentiary is nowhere near Boutte (pronounced Bootee, not Bootay).
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    BEWARE THE AXEMAN!
    I listened twice
The book was so interesting I listened twice. The first read I wandered from the mystery so taken was I by life in New Orleans in 1919. The second read I concentrated on following the threads of intrigue. I just might listen a third time.

Detective meets his adversary through the novels read by the killer
Or âWhoâs following whom?â The killer now turned journalist follows dwarfish Detective Chief Inspector Camille Verhven in the writings for the newspapers while the detective follows the âNovelistâ through the Roman noir style of bloody murders.
    NOT WORTHWHILE
Based on the Black Dahlia murder of 1947 in California but transposed to France. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to just fill in the blanks with Paris landmarks and try to pass it off as original. There is even a long section quoting old news stories about the murder. If this isn't bad enough there is a scene at the end of chapter 8 where the detective's wife gives him a book of Caravaggio's paintings. He especially likeS the one of GOLIATH HOLDING DAVID'S HEAD. : "GOLIATH TENANT LA TETE DE DAVID!
    J'adore!

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In this atmospheric historical mystery series debut, a courageous nurse and a war-scarred police detective in 1860s San Francisco champion the downtrodden and fight for justice.
After serving as a nurse in the Crimea, British-born Celia Davies left her privileged family for an impulsive marriage to a handsome Irishman. Patrick brought her to San Francisco's bustling shores but then disappeared and is now presumed dead. Determined to carry on, Celia partners with her half-Chinese cousin, Barbara, and her opinionated housekeeper, Addie, to open a free medical clinic for women who have nowhere else to turn. But Celia's carefully constructed peace crumbles when one of her Chinese patients is found brutally murdered, and Celia's hotheaded brother-in-law stands accused of the crime.
A veteran of America's civil war, detective Nicholas Greaves is intent on discovering the killer of the girl, whose ethnicity and gender render her as powerless in death as they did in life. Nicholas' efforts are complicated by Celia, who has a knack for walking into dangerous situations that may lead to answers or get them both killed. For as their inquiries take them from Chinatown's squalid back alleys to the Barbary Coast's violent shipping docks to the city's gilded parlors, Celia and Nicholas begin to suspect that someone very close to them holds the key to a murderous conspiracy.

    No Feel for San Francisco
This is an adequate mystery with stock characters and no sense of place. Aside from some street names and a couple of inaccurate landmark references, this story might have been set in any 19th Century American city with a Chinese population. There is barely a hint of San Francisco in this novel which is disappointing since it's billed as a story of old San Francisco.
    Unfulfilled hopes
This sounded like a story I'd enjoy, old San Francisco, medicine and nursing with a mystery driving the plot. It had the ingredients but failed miserably in narration and story. I couldn't finish! And I am practiced in sticking with a story until it grabs my attention. I can set something aside and return later when my mood is right to try it again. I wanted this to work, always looking for new series to get into. So I am sorry I didn't find it here.
    Transports you to another time!
I enjoyed the descriptions of old San Francisco and the historical aspect of this novel. Whenever I would listen to it, I found myself transported to another place and time. The story was interesting and kept me intrigued throughout. Well done!

    Oxford in the 1930's
This mystery is set in an Oxford women's college. Interestingly enough, it was published the same year as Dorothy Sayers' well known Lord Peter/Harriet Vane novel, also set in a fictional Oxford women's college. This is a shorter and much less complex novel, and I would never say that Hay was as good an author as Sayers, but I found it an interesting read/listen, for those interested in Golden Age mysteries and who would like to compare this version of Oxford with that in Gaudy Night. I have enjoyed the British Library Crime Classics series, and hope that more will be made available as audiobooks, hopefully Wispersinc for Voice compatible with the Kindle version.
    Golden Age Detective Story
This book is one of the series of classic crime novels being issued by the British Library. It is set in Oxford and is very much of its period. Accept the world was different 80 odd years ago and you can enjoy it. It is well written and I definitely wanted to know what happened. It was not difficult to guess who had done it but that did not spoil the story.
    Death on the Cherwell
I really like these 'between the wars' mysteries reissued by the British Library and Mavis Doriel Hay is a good example. She only wrote 3 books of which this, in my view, was her best.
The spoken word version is well produced and the reading is excellent. It captures the period very well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Perhaps not to everyone's taste and to modern ears and may seem a bit anachronistic. But so it goes......

"Rendez-vous donc service, Bosch, et laissez tomber. Nous sommes nombreux. Laisser tomber, bordel."

    Disappointing
I really like this series, but the storyline in this one is not believable and somewhat gross with all the pythons and gore. Some may like it but I found it to be far from a cozy mystery. Return to your coffeehouse in Wisconsin and leave the snakes behind. I don't know why I even finished it. Definitely not what I expected from the author!
    It was okay
I kept waiting for it to get better but it didn't. It was an okay mystery but not as good as the others in the series. Hopefully the next one will be better.
    dreadful plot.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    A different plot.
What could Sandra Balzo have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The reading of the story was good.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Karen Savage?
The narration was good. The story was fairly unbelievable.
What character would you cut from Murder on the Orient Espresso?
The characters were not particularly well drawn but their actions were illogical and farfetched.
