Breathtakingly bad

A dull & badly written novel combined with execrable narration meant I did not get beyond the third chapter.

The plot is drab and uninteresting and the narration a disgrace.

Annoying narrator

I'm only on Chapter 5 of the book so can't comment on the story as yet. However, I am already frustrated beyond belief by the narrator's way of reading. She pauses, constantly, in the most inappropriate places. For example, Mom chatting to pre-teen daughter "we need to ....... agree on ground rules and...... stick to......them". No-one talks like that. Ever. Then we have the players at a crime scene: "she watched as........the pathologist carefully......worked away the soil around......the bones". I find myself waiting for, and reacting to, the next inappropriate pause instead of just listening to the story. It detracts totally from the atmosphere she's supposed to be creating. I will persevere and give the author a chance but I won't be......buying anything by...... this..... narrator....ever again

I found it extremely difficult to listen to this, the narration is poor, the Birmingham accent dire and as for the American accent, well I gave up at that point !!

Good story almost drown in details

The main story is very good. The fist mystifying chapters are extremely good and I think the narrator is just right and does a superb job.

But then we get a lot of scenarios which I am sure fits into the pattern but is quite boring to listen to - esp because many of them are variations of scenarios we have already heard. Also most of the computer inaction is spelled out in detail - in a printed edition I guess you would skip or skim a lot of those, but in an audio book it becomes annoying.

Some people should not narrate books. Me, for example - I'd be very bad at it.

Sadly, so is the narrator of this book. Slow, stilted delivery, inappropriate inflections - I barely got through the first minute.

I can't comment on the story, but I am a Priest fan, so it's a disappointment not to be able to listen to this one.

Virtual reality based on real memories

The story is from the point of view of an FBI agent who has been widowed recently. She left the UK as a child and has returned to a small town where a killing spree took place - on the same day that a lone gunman acted out a mass murder in the USA. A coincidence? She's searching for links between the two. There are odd events, out of the blue, that take the mundane into a strange realm - momentarily - then to a quite dazzling climax. The ending is satisfying but I had to revisit the last chapter to fully appreciate what had happened. Priest doesn't do straight forward narratives but that's why I like his books. The audiobook is spoiled a bit by the American narrator's English accent, which were off-kilter.

I am a big fan of Alex Barclay, this book did not disappoint. A really gripping storyline, which is hard to put down. Exciting thriller to the very end. Ren Bryce is an awesome heroine.

Slow to start

I had never read Alex Barclay before and was in a train station and read the back cover,was rushing and remembered it a few weeks later. Downloaded it to my kindle and settled down to read on the beach, I never give up on a book,so I was nearly half way through before I got in to it. It wasn't the type you are dying to keep reading. Saying that everyones tastes are different and I will try another book by this author before I really decide if I was to put them on my list as good to recommend.

Pulp perfection

I read the first Donovan Creed book on kindle and thought it was a great read, it could have been something written by Duane Swierczynski. Went for book two on audible and was equally as impressed.

I'm not one to spot a twist too early, but I'm fairly sure none were telegraphed and that made for a riveting listen. Adam Simms was good too.

Surely Locke can't keep this pace up, but I will definitely be reading on to see

Shame about the quality of downlaod

No - Spoild by the number of places the lines in the story are repeated - like a scratched LP

Not finished book due to quality of recording.

Nope - in the beginning I didn't like her yelly screetchy voice - but I got used to it and din't mind it after a while.

Could you see Lady Killer being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Not sure as I didn't get to the end.

Perhaps recording should be tested before re;lease - I have downloaded this three times on different media and all of them are like a scratched record - especially in the beginning of chapter 8.

I hated this book, but my first review obviously was not to the taste of the Audible team. I found the attitudes of various people in this story to be beyond belief - aggressive and self centred to such a degree that is was really not credible.

Simply Unbelievable and fantastic. Easy 5 Star

I took a gamble on this one. Something caught my imagination. Oh that was a good move. What a book, brilliant and totally absorbing. The story is demanding, gruesome and relentlessly draws you in. The main character is truly Shakespearean, hard, bad and tragic. There a three linked stories and each is powerful and important. I kept wanting to get back to each one, frustrated when the book took you the next. The narrator is brilliant and adds so much to the book, his skill with voices is a delight. Read it and pay attention. It all matters.

Great book

Not normally my type of book but the reviews were good. This book is great. Although it was longer then normal it held my interest from the first page. It covers three time zones but you always knew where you were. I recommend it. The narrater Nigel Carrington was very good and I enjoyed listening to him.

Fascinating tale of post civil war Spain

Set in both post revolutionary Spain and contemporary Spain, this first of a trilogy. Leo Guzman is a brilliant creation, one of Franco's enforcers a methodical killer. Ana Maria Galindez is the lead in the present day a forensic scientist who is perusing Guzman from the present. Although complicated the story is fascinating especially as I knew very little about Spain in 1953. I look forward to the next instalment

A good idea let down at the end

I enjoyed this. The idea was excellent and on the whole I was carried along, liking Guzman and hating what he did. However, there are three things that let this down.

The first was the ending, which just didn't fit in and was written as though the author had run out of steam. This was closely followed by the use of Spanish words and phrases. The story is set in Spain, so we don't need to have occasional Spanish words to remind us of the fact. A bit like cheap films that have the actors playing foreign parts speak in an accent! Finally, I was disappointing by the narrator, who took no time to find out how to pronounce the Spanish words used.

Having said all of that I would recommend it.

Long, indulgent and gloriously brilliant

This book was a little slow to get going due to jumping forward and backward in time, however stick with it as its truly brilliant.

The best diet book on earth!! The story is very gruesome and the writer describes every virus symptom in great detail. Typical virus story. But if you are a fan of virus books, you would like it very much.

And that is how it happens....YIKES!

I liked the story. Seemed realistic. The story moved quickly.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Well, no. Good for Wil Mara for giving it a try, but alas, it didn't do his book any justice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Patient zero touches a friend - and then that person touches two friends and those two friends touch two other friends and so on - and so on.....

I would like to hear more of his stories but read by someone else. I'm sorry! You are a wonderful story writer!

Underwhelming; manages to make grue boring

If someone suggested to Wil Mara that he read his own book, he might consider examining the relationship; Id say the person was not thinking in Maras best interests. His reading comes perilously close to a monotone, sounding very much like a lawyer that has been hired (not at premium rates) to read out a lengthy legal paper that consists largely of an inventory, plus some narrative bits.

Because that is what this book ends up sounding like due to Maras reading; an inventory with a few narrative parts. His bland reading makes the most horrific descriptions --and hes got some doozies-- come out about as spine-chilling as listening to someone reading the dec page of an insurance policy. His characters dont have any really distinctive voices, either. His reading isnt egregiously awful, just.underwhelming. Bland.

Thats a problem with the book as well; the story is told rather than shown, going against that basic creative writing dictum of show, dont tell.

Dark and gripping from start to finish

The eye collector is a strange book as it starts from the end but it works very well. It follows the life of an ex cop who writes about the eye collector as a newspaper reporter and he becomes very much involved in the case in a disturbing way.It takes you in to a dark and tense word where a serial killer seems to be always one step ahead of his police. A great read that keeps you guessing which I listened too without a pause. I strongly recommend it to anyone as it is fantastic book

This German author has a knack - he keeps you guessing all the way and the end - too scary.

Good old Thriller

I got sucked in to Sebastian Fitzek from listening to the Child. I ravished my Audible credits to collect book after book.

I enjoy his style & the Eye collector is a Fitzek classic!

With his now predictable gift at ratcheting up the tension the book is a race against time to capture a serial killer with our heroes being the unlikely pairing of an ex police negotiator & a blind woman who may be more than she seems.

I always think I know exactly what's going on in Fitzeks books but the end always amazes me! I never finger the right person as the killer but enjoy trying!

I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the Child or Amok!! You won't be dissatisfied!!

Well written

Written from the viewpoint of each character I enjoyed this book as it weaved a story and viewpoint from one character to another in both childhood and as adults.

This is the first Laura Lippman book I have read/listened too and I really enjoyed and I intend to purchase more from this author.

The narrator did a good job as well.
