Dr. Felix Hoffmann is about to head home after a grueling night shift when he hears the words, This gun is loaded! Hoffmann, long accustomed to helping others on the verge of death, suddenly finds himself - along with several colleagues and patients - at the mercy of a deranged, blind kidnapper in the ICU.
Deploying his own distinctive brand of diplomacy - and his characteristic acerbic wit - Hoffmann tries to convince the man to end the standoff while he still can. As the hot summer days tick by and the tension builds toward the shocking climax, Hoffmann is forced to reconsider who is friend and who is foe. The question becomes not only whether he can save the lives of all involved, but what this crisis reveals about the people he thought he knew best.

Good, easy reading
I thought it was written in a funny way, with all the main character's faults and idiosyncrasies . The author uses his hospital background to good stead, in a way that shows doctors are ordinary people with their likes, dislikes and baddies among them. Spielberg does the translations well, the English flows smoother in this book than in earlier ones that were translated by someone else. I enjoyed his play on names of characters. The book reminded me of the First Ladies Detective Agency. I felt you got to know the main character. And he does work out who the baddy is and why.
I hope Scheinberg writes more of Dr Hoffmann books and they get put on kindle as well.
Another winner
This is the third story of Dr Hoffmann that I have read and enjoyed. The main character is a real, sensitive, hard-working Doctor, who is not prepared to "tow the hospital line" when it comes to his patients lives - and deaths.
The Fourth Day finds Dr Hoffmann in ICU just before his shift ends after night duty. A clearly upset man and his dog arrive, with threats, a gun and explosives demanding answers to questions Dr Hoffmann does not have - yet.
Four days of fear, uncertainty and a "boss" who wants the limelight but is definitely hiding something shady makes for a highly entertaining and thoughtful read.
I want MORE
Oh my goodness...I would that there were more in this short series. I liked the characters, the plot, the fast read...really a great bunch of books. I've bought them all and can't wait to see if there will be more in the future.
Another great Dr Hoffmann story
The Dr. Hoffmann mysteries were all written in German. I don't know how many of them there are, but the four that have been translated to English are outstanding. They give insight into the inner workings of a Berlin hospital, and at the same time the throw well written mystery into the mix.
Can't wait for more translations.
Holds your interest
You are reading and the whole time you are trying to figure out where the plot is going. Just when you think you've figured it out, things take a major left turn. Also during this time you keep wondering why he wants a relationship with the original girl in the first book. It really keeps you guessing.
