    Lucy
The concept for this novel is really big. A human-ape hybrid walking and talking among us, observing the way the modern world functions. Sounds like a really interesting read right? Well, unfortunately the interesting part doesn't venture far from the concept.
The characters are flat and two-dimensional: Good Scientist, Bad Politician, etc. It is as though they were born of some stereotypical character computer generator. The dialogue is atrocious and inconsistent. Amanda (aka Miss Everyday American Teen), Lucy's best friend spends a scene teaching Lucy to say "word" and later describes something as an "Orwellian grope through the political, sociological and ethical issues". Or later when Mr Everyman Janitor says "They seen your genes. They seen 'em" followed almost immediately by "Beats me. I'm just the factotum." A stereotyped character is bad but one that can't even stay in stereotypical character? Atrocious!
And Lucy herself? Why she is the sheer essence of perfection. In an ironic little twist Gonzales refers to the Twilight books at one point as "trash" but it seems to me that Lucy is as close to a female Edward Cullen as I've ever seen. She is absolutely perfect in every possible way: beautiful, brilliant, charming with super-strength and the ability to talk to animals (yeah, that's right). She also takes to American life with the utmost ease (despite having spent her entire life in the Congo) buying shoes and thong underwear and wearing bikinis. I expected that (hybrid or no) someone from the Congo would introduce a little perspective on the opulent American lifestyle. Lucy was confused by America for about ten pages and then she wildly embraced the facebook-text-message-clothes-shoes-and-prom ideology of the American teen.
The biggest issue I had with this novel was the overall lack of controversy within it. A human-ape hybrid is supposed to be something shocking and controversial but instead all we get are "the good guys" - those on Lucy's side and "the bad guys" - those who oppose her for no substantial reasons. Lucy desperately needs a FLAW. She should be unstable or dangerous or SOMETHING. There is a reason scientists don't create hybrids and it isn't because the Bible says not to. It is not a wise thing to do.

  • Baby Broker or Dedicated Doctor? Audiobook by Don Canaan, Shawn Graves

Title: Baby Broker or Dedicated Doctor?
    Author: Don Canaan, Shawn Graves
    Narrator: Teri Schnaubelt
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-11-13
    Publisher: Don Canaan
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
This medical mystery novel features an idealistic young physician-to-be who loses her idealism after a series of overpowering events intervene to rob her of everything she loved.
Who is Ellen Goodman? Is she the kind, empathetic obstetrician who has delivered thousands of babies? Or is she the greedy baby broker who sells the babies of poor, teenage girls to the highest bidder? Or, perhaps, is she a woman capable of even darker acts? Only you the reader can make that judgment.
Detective Liz Roberts, who we previously met in Dutiful Daughter (2011) will unravel the truth and uncover seventy years worth of secrets to discover a complicated tale of profound love between two people forbidden by law to be together because of the color of their skin.
It is a tale of great sacrifice...and of greater evil.
Meanwhile, Liz Roberts will also unearth a long-buried secret in her own family. A secret that will shake the foundations of her world.

"Secrets of the Past and the Present"
Authors Shawn Graves and Don Canaan have written a very intoxicating and haunting story. I could not put it down and finished reading it in two evenings. Janie is a 16-year old girl who has just given birth to a baby girl who she has already given up for adoption. She had told Dr. Ellen Goodman she believed the baby was entitled to a two-parent home, and that she herself had to find a new life for herself. But a maternal instinct can be powerful and after six weeks, Janie wants her baby back, or else she'll go to the police. Decades later, Detective Liz Roberts is tasked to follow-up on an inquiry made by a 65-year old woman who had been adopted and had traced information leading to the doctor who had delivered her...Dr. Ellen Goodman. I found this story hypnotizing, and a fast read. The characters are well developed as the story twists and winds to become more and more stunning. Historical events are woven authentically into past events revealing the inequality and racial persecution of the '40's and '50's. The writing style is compelling, editing is good, which communicates extremely well with readers. I strongly recommend this highly thrilling crime novel.
    Mind. Blown. Once again.
The characters: The characters in this book are, not surprisingly, given the first book, very well developed. Ellen Goodman, for example, is such a real character that I wouldn't be surprised to meet her on the street. At certain parts of the story, you find yourself feeling so horrible for Ellen and wanting to hug her and console her, but there are also times when you want to slap that grin off her face. But that is what makes these books (and the author, Shawn Graves) so great. She realizes that real people are not so black and white. Her characters are real in that they have both bad qualities and good. And that makes them so real.
The story: I couldn't put this book down. The story is so gripping that I couldn't even stop reading to eat or sleep. Seriously. And one of the great things about this story is that there are no loose ends. By the end of the novel, all the questions that you may have are answered. Author Shawn Graves must have been plotting this novel for a very long time, but I know she didn't, considering how close the two novels were released.

    Members Reviews:
The first one is the hardest...But it really never gets easy.
This is book 2 of the 6 book series, and it is a good read.
The same cast members are back, Brian, Mel, Brooklyn,
Amber, Reggie, Carlos, The Chipmunk and a few others.
The story opens with every Paramedic's favorite, the MCI,
where the driver of a stolen Jaguar hits 2 Police cars and
then runs into a Chinese restaurant.
Brian's shirt catches on fire as he tries to get a Policeman
    out of the car......
There is yet another MCI, as a good size number of people,
get their thumbs cut off on an escalator that has a sharp metal
edge on the hand railing, I bet you will look before you get on one,
    from now on.
Brian and Mel, get an EMT-P student, doing her truck rotations, her name
is Candice, call me Candy, and she seems quite in over her head at first.
The crews work a Rolling Stones concert, along with everyday routine calls.
Then it happens.........FF's and EMT's/Paramedics Biggest Fear, I have been
around situations like this, being stuck by a dirty or infected needle, from an IV
    drug user.
At that point, you have 60 minutes, to get the PEP treatment started.
You will also find out that, FF's and EMT's/Paramedics make the worst patients.
As you can see, the story is fast paced and non stop.
A good quick read, and you will feel that you are on a ride along.
    Enjoy the rush.
    Excellent Character Development
Trauma Junkie #2 does a great job in developing the characters we met in Trauma Junkie #1. It's nice to see the main character in a different mindset even as he goes through what could be a tragic event. Nice job with character development and, in true Tom Hobbs style, there's a great mix of the personal and exciting EMS action. Unlike many authors who write about EMS, you can tell that Hobbs has "been there, done that, and got the T-shirt". Recommended read!
    Another Great Book!
Trauma Junkie: Hypodermic Nightmare by Tom Hobbs was as great as the first book. The characters from part one have returned. The plot was even more intense when the main character, Brian, accidently pricked himself with a drug addict¡Âs dirty needle. I couldn¡Ât put the book down. I just had to know what happened to my hero. I truly love this series. I have started book 3 and already purchased book 4 & 5. Â
    Trauma Junkie
Tom took a more serious tone with this book, bringing to light a very real threat to all EMS personnel and showing the emotional roller coaster one goes through when coping with the aftermath. He didn't, however, leave out any of the wonderful sarcasm or the patients calls that could only have happened in real life (because no one could make that stuff up). Definitely recommend this series...
Book two in the Trauma Junkie series is another hit
Tom Hobbs has continued his Trauma series with another roller coaster ride along with Brian and Mel, EMT's in New York.

    Release date: 01-31-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
The most decorated homicide detective in NYPD history, Dave Gurney, is trying to adjust to his life of quasi-retirement when a young woman who is producing a documentary on a notorious murder spree seeks his counsel. Soon after, Gurney begins feeling threatened: a razor-sharp hunting arrow lands in his yard, and he narrowly escapes serious injury in a booby-trapped basement. As things grow more bizarre, he finds himself reexamining the case of The Good Shepherd, which 10 years before involved a series of roadside shootings and a rage-against-the-rich manifesto.
The killings ceased, and a consensus opinion developed that no one would dream of challenging - except Dave Gurney. Mocked even by some who'd been his supporters in previous investigations, Dave realizes that the killer is too clever to be found. The only gambit that may work is also the most dangerous - to make himself a target and get the killer to come to him.

    Dave Gurney returns!
This is the third outing for Dave Gurney, the retired, highly respected, New York detective.
I'd read/listened to the two previous offerings and couldnt wait for the third book to become available in the UK.
Fans of Dave will not be disappointed by this latest offering and I urge new listeners to try him too.
It is read by the excellent Jeff Harding (who also narrates Lee Child's Jack Reacher stories)
If you enjoy the books of Lee Child, Robert Crais and John Connelly then this author is for you!
    Excellent book
I think "Let the Devil Sleep" should come under the heading of an unputdownable book. I tried to stagger my listening over a period of time but it didn't work. Now I am listening to it all over again. Jeff Harding is brilliant in his narration. He has the ability to be able to change his voice to suit his subject with great ease which leaves you in no doubt as to who the character is. I would seriously recommend this audio book, it is a brilliant listen.
    A really great read!
I enjoyed this book very much. Jeff Harding reads extremely well in my opinion and I regularly search for new books based on his performance. This story was engaging with great characters and plenty of suspense. I would definitely recommend it.
A tad on the dull side.
I listened to all of this book just waiting for it to get exciting- unfortunately it didn't. The last chapter was great but only because it was the last chapter. Sorry but not for me.
    Another Brilliant Listen
I'm picking books a new way as I've run out of authors so going with anything read by Jeff Harding - John Vardon doesn't disappoint can't wait to read more. Great characters, well written enthralling plots. So far my strategy is paying off.

Handing control of the murder inquiry to his partner Caterina Mattiola, Blume goes in search of answers, setting off on a journey into the deep dark south of Italy....
    Critic Reviews:
"Im putting my money on Alec Blume becoming the most popular detective of the coming decade." (Belfast Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
May be a good story but hidden by bad narration
Whom ever decided not to use Saul Reichlin as narrator should be shot. John Guerrasio is not in the same league as a narrator. He might just be ok in a short story but not in a novel of this length.
I really enjoyed the first three Alec Blume stories and have recommended them several times to others. This one I may have to read as a book to discover if it has any merit.
I strongly suggest you listen to a sample before buying as it is not easy on the ear.
    A Blooming Mystery
Alec Blume is an amusing complex character who seems despite himself, and with very little help from the various branches of the Italian police, to be able to untangle the Medusa-like puzzle he is determined to solve. Amusing., well-described characters and landscapes makes this a good story that also gives some insight into many aspects of Italian society.
It took some time to become comfortable with John Guerrasio as narrator, but he did a good job with telling the tale, giving the characters voice and the action come alive.

    Hooked!
I purchased this after listening to the Falcon series which I thoroughly enjoyed so after reading the reviews I took the plunge!
Steven Pacey does an excellent job with the narration - I was hooked on the Jussi Adler-Olsen books which were also excellently narrated and wasn't disappointed with this one.
Great story keeps you listening to find out what happens next and finishes leaving you hanging for the next instalment which I'm off to get now!
As absorbing as the Spanish series
Keeping track of all the names and characters was something of a challenge here, but once into the tortuous twists and turn of this tale, I was unable to stop reading/listening till the end!
And Mr.Pacey's command of such a range of accents is amazing!
I wish this book lasted for another hour or two
mainly because of the excellent narration. I have enjoyed Robert Wilson 's books for years. please keep on writing.
    .
So Exciting, and so many Twists!
Loved it. Already ordered the next in series (but 1, as I listened to 2nd one first on Special Offer). I agree it was a bit of a Boys Own story at times, but ... it was so exciting, with such believable, flawed characters, that it didn't really matter. Plus, having a 17 year old daughter of my own, ... I so get it!
Great new author discovered on 2 for 1 offer!
The offer tempted me to try out this author who I had not come across before - and what a bargain I got.

    Publisher's Summary:
Great White Doctor is an extraordinarily realistic account of celebrity doctors and their aberrant social lives. The extremely well-researched book is a fascinating peek into the strange world of upper-echelon medical practice.
Bradley Lewis worked in a New York City hospital for six years and writes from an insider's perspective. Great White Doctor is a novel grounded in reality. It is a work of fiction missing from the literature of our modern era. The darkly realistic detail and medical panorama make Great White Doctor a powerful and compulsively listenable novel. The book speaks to the heart of what is wrong with our health care system and the national broken paradigm by which it is administered. Anyone interested in his health care should listen to this book, especially women.

Frighting fiction about NY top doctors life
What made the experience of listening to Great White Doctor the most enjoyable?
The set up is very believable . The path to success in the medical field is all about money .. It is a business . The patient is the victim.
Would you recommend Great White Doctor to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes .. it is a portent of the future if we do not mend our approach to health care in this country.
What didnt you like about Kirk Zieglers performance?
Obviously, Mr Ziegler is not a native New Yorker , he did not pronounce most of the colloquial Jewish words incorrectly . He often mispronounced other words as well . Did anyone from Audible listen to this book ?I found his performance took away from the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole story makes me think twice about suggested procedures and are they really necessary for health .. especially womens' health .I know the book is fiction , however the premise seemed very plausible .
    Any additional comments?
Since I am a New Yorker , I would be glad to reread with the proper accent .
The absolutely worst narrator I've ever heard!!!!
The problem with this audio book lies solely with the narration. The reader sounds like he didn't get past the 5th grade in school. Actually, I know 5th graders who can read a complete sentence with more tone and inflection than this man. He has pronounced so many words incorrectly I'm beginning to wonder whether or not he knows how to read and speak English. As for the story itself, the premise is good and the characters are reasonably interesting. I think I'm going to give up and read the rest of it in print (I hardly ever do that). My best advice is to stay away from this narrator in the future. I hope Audible reads this and reconsiders using him to narrate their books.
    Reader destroys the book
What would have made Great White Doctor better?
I don't know Mr. Ziegler but he is the worst professional reader I have ever heard. He mispronounces words.

    Publisher's Summary:
What if bacteria turned all the gasoline in Los Angeles into vinegar? Carmageddon doesn't begin to describe it; Petroplague does.
UCLA graduate student Christina Gonzalez wanted to use biotechnology to free America from its dependence on Middle Eastern oil. Instead, an act of eco-terrorism unleashes her genetically-modified bacteria into the fuel supply of Los Angeles, making petroleum useless. With the city paralyzed and slipping toward anarchy, Christina must find a way to rein in the microscopic monster she created. But not everyone wants to cure the petroplague - and some will do whatever it takes to spread it.
From the La Brea Tar Pits to university laboratories to the wilds of the Angeles National Forest, Christina and her cousin River struggle against enemies seen and unseen to stop the infection before it's too late.
Set in the mountain-ringed Los Angeles basin, this terrifyingly plausible science thriller about good intentions, unexpected consequences, Peak Oil, climate change, experimental biofuels, and the astonishing power of microorganisms will give you pause every time you fill up your car.
    Members Reviews:
Feels like a made for TV movie
Petroplague is an interesting variation on the biodisaster theme of microbes eating oil. Scientists working on microbial remediation for hard to extract oil deposits are the unwitting target of ecoterrorists that results in bacteria consuming gasoline as well as oil in the ground underneath Los Angeles. Natural gas and coal can still generate electricity, but cars become worthless. To make matters worse, the the pressure buildup from underground munching microbes creates earthquakes. A young graduate students races against time to save LA.
The science elements are well done and solid; both the strategy for improving oil recovery as well as the potential solutions that are sought. It's the overall story that has major deficiencies: there is simply too little offered to make the action believable. Even though individuals right now are able to DIY natural gas conversions of vehicles, segways become the only option for police. Only a single scientist (and his graduate student) work on this problem and can't envision the PR nightmare ahead. With LA quarantined, the US president can only offer food drops. One phone call from a biotech official about "having the cure" has the mayor offering assistance (as if no one else would be making similar claims). One phone conversation with an accusation of murder brings an immediate arrest warrant. One phone call initiates an arrest while there's a suicide victim hanging in the backyard. Finally, the slow crawl to the climax is one unlucky escapade after another. While the sci-fi elements are great and the overall plot is sound, there is simply too little flesh on the bones to make this a meaty morsel.
Finally, the narration is exceptionally suboptimal. The reading pace is slow with unacceptably long pauses between chapters. There is a severely limited range of voices with females performed especially poorly. To infuse some distinction, there are nasally renditions and almost comical accents that convey inappropriate impressions of the characters.
    Fast Paced Science Thriller
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes I would.
