Excellent novel and I also enjoyed the reader yet I quickly learned an abridged version cuts out far too much to truly follow along in a respective series.

A hero who doesn't work and play well with others.

I'm a glutton for audiobooks - especially mysteries - and I'm surprised I had never heard of Chris Knopf until I stumbled upon The Last Refuge. After hearing it read, I listened to the other four in a week. Five books by the same writer in one week is high praise. But note, these books won't be for everyone. My interest is in the protagonist, a 54 year old mechanical engineer, called Sam Acquillo, who is one of those guys who knows how almost everything works - both manufactured or natural. If he doesn't know, he can figure it out. He's a know-it-all, but he isn't annoying because he DOES know it all. He a good guy to have around, especially if you are tracking down various murderers.

Sam is a former boxer. He's wasn't a good boxer but he's stayed in shape by working out at grimy, smelly boxing gyms. When he meets another man, Sam sizes the man up and decides whether he could kick the guys butt. He usually decides that he can and he's usually right. This is largely because most men were never boxers of any sort, and if they were they haven't maintained the physical condition of even a mediocre boxer.

At the beginning of this book Sam runs a R&D Division of a huge corporation. He has a record of going all over the world to fix big problems in huge industrial operations. He's the company's best engineer, in spite of the fact that he doesn't play and work well with others.

The book begins with a corporate board meeting. Sam is invited and is praised for the remarkable job he's do with his division and the terrific revenues his team has been able to generate. In fact, it is so profitable that the Board is thinking about selling it off at a very high profit. Sam knows it's a done deal and is very unhappy to have his division sold out from under him.

Sam's lousy personality emerges. The house counsel, sitting across the table from Sam, starts to read a description of the mechanics by which Sam's division will be spun-off. Sam gets up, reaches across the table, grabs the lawyer's tie, and pulls him far enough across the table to punch him in the face.

Great new author!

I know this is the first book written by David Hosp, and I was curious to check it out because of the buzz surrounding it. I wasn't disappointed in the least. The storyline is intriguing and fast-paced, the characters are well-developed, and the narration was great. There is nothing not to like about this book.

As I was listening to it, there were other more famous authors that came to mind - John Grisham, and believe it or not, Stephen King (mostly for the character development of New Englanders and quite a few mentions of the Red Sox which sounded an awful lot like King). Of course, this is a GOOD thing. Mr. Hosp has a great talent for making his characters real, and in my opinion, that's one of the most important elements of a good story. If you can't relate to, or understand, or believe the characters, then who cares? Not a problem here.

The story itself is original and a good mystery in its own right. There are no lulls in plot, and you will be hooked quickly. I won't delve into the details because I hate spoilers - but I will say I highly recommend it.

Jump on the bandwagon and check out this new author. You'll be heading to his website next to see if he's got another one in the works, I promise.

Can't Put it Down!

Twists and turns... character development.. plot development.. this book is a must read/listen!! Once I started I couldn't stop!! In the likes of Ken Follett this is excellent! My only disappointment is that there are no more books available on Audible by this Author!!

Worth a Listen

I gave this book a three star rating. However, its probably more like three and a half. The story doesn't grab you from the beginning but its interesting enough that you want to stick with the story. I liked the characters but most lacked true depth to their persona. It's a good book to listen to when you don't want to get totally wrapped up into a novel.

Dark Harbor

Generally well written and interesting except the author does what so many mystery writers do when they are stuck (and editors let them do it): they make the character do something that intelligent people would never do if they wanted to live. To what I mean, try this test: You are an attorney accused of murder. You are sitting in your law office holding in your hand the ONLY COPY of evidence that will prove you innocent and convict a mob boss. You know that the mob is after you to get this ONLY COPY of the evidence. You must get it to the police station a few blocks away to deliver the evidence.

Great listening

I am the true multi-tasker who loves something besides music or TV in the background that keeps my interest but allows me to concentrate on what I am researching in my genealogy or quilting. I take my cell with me, this was one book I couldn't put done til I finished 'Alone'.

The story is good, but easy to tell it's an early work as the story was a little choppy and rushed, but kept by interest and it was an enjoyable read overall

Horrible abridgement

The original was probably very good -- it was a good story line, I think.... However, whoever did the abridgement must work in a butcher shop. There were parts cut out of the book that must have been very important. I kept rewinding the book thinking that I had missed something or had push the fast forward button on my ipod by mistake. If this is an example of a typical abridgement I will only get unabridged versions in the future.

Long winded.

Billy Bob Moves to Montana

James Lee Burke gets better with age. While I still prefer the trashy underworld and Cajun swamps of Dave Robicheaux, the move to Montana for Billy Bob Holland suits him. Burke brings the Big Sky Country alive with his lyrical prose. Of course it's predictable, but in a comfortable way, like an old shoe. The narrator does an above average job.

Characteristic JLB

Native mysticism, fundamentalist Christianity, chilling violence, natural beauty, human corruption and redemption, flawed heroes, veiled conspiracies, right-wing oppressors and liberal underdogs... all classic James Lee Burke, and present in force. These themes persist through most of his work. I personally could do without the Michael Moore anti-right conspiracy stuff (wicked, shadowy right wing forces are--fill in the blank, depending on the time of day--killing innocent natives, polluting rivers, starting wars on phony premises, etc.), but I love Burke's stuff nonetheless. I just shrug and enjoy the colorful characters, the righteous crusades, and the overarching human themes. Nobody like Burke, and I read everything of his that I can get my hands on.

Haunted Characters

Once over the initial shock of not hearing Will Patton, I did enjoy this book. Most of Burke's main characters are haunted by something and Billy Bob is no exception, LQ shows up regularly for short visits and encouragement to keep Billy Bob from being wishy-washy. The bad guys are reminiscent of real characters and you wonder if this is modeled on Halliburton. All together a good read!

Where oh where is Will Patton?

Great book, but Will Patton IS the voice of James Lee Burke's characters, and it was disappointing not to hear him.

Captivating

James Lee Burke has done it again.... a terrific book!

This book, like many of his books, wrap up in the epilogue all to quickly as opposed to the first person, which I don't particularly like. Otherwise, I would have given it a 5-star rating.

Nonetheless, this audiobook is a can't miss.

The reader is good, but not of Will Patton calibur.

Mayday

This author never fails to write exciting, fast moving, thought provoking novels. As usual, he includes enough fact to make the fiction frightening.This is every fliers nightmare- an incapacitated flight crew. It makes you want to check the flight manifest to be sure there is a seasoned pilot in the passenger section before boarding! And the liability carrier??? I'm sure ,while probably not verbalized, there isn't a carrier out there who hasn't been conflicted faced with overwhelming financial responsibility for a disaster. I highly recommend this book, as I do any of this authors' efforts

Unable to get past first chapter

I've read and enjoyed several Nelson DeMille books and was looking forward to immersing myself in this on during a long drive. But I just couldn't do it. The narration sounded like a badly synthesized computer voice, muffled under a pile of clothes. I wouldn't be surprised if this narration was copied from an old cassette tape from the 1970's. It was that bad.

I really hope it was just a case of poor production or lack of quality control. I can't imagine this being what the author intended when they decided to produce an Audible version of their book.

Another great female detective series

T.M.e. Walsh had written the first in another great female detective series. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you wanting more. If you're a fan of the mystery/thriller genre then you won't want to miss this one.

Good plot but poor writing

The story is interesting but it is poorly written and edited. Lots of repetition of words within sentences, they needed a thesaurus! That made it grating and difficult to listen to.

Slow, tedious and repetitive

I only managed to get part way through before I gave up. The story was slow, boring and the writing used very repetitive words. The narrator was just awful, using annoying and painful accents and intonation. Awful.

Back to the best of James Patterson

After enjoying the majority of the Alex Cross books and the Jack Reacher series I had begun to predict the storylines of the recent books I had listened to HOWEVER this book, the narrator, the storyline has given me the fantastic feeling of 'what happens next!' Gripped til the end. Hope others enjoy it as much as I did.

Probably the best story I've seen so far

Loved this book from start to finish, literally had me guessing all the way through. I think this is probably the best story I have ever heard! Really good narrator too. thoroughly enjoyed!

Back to James Patterson's Best

This book is one of the best of James Patterson's books which I've read in a long while. The plot has so many twists and turns that I couldn't wait for the next chance i had to listen. Jumping between past and present took a little getting used to, but that didn't detract from the overall experience. The reader was good too.

FANTASTIC!!

This book was fantastic, it's amazingly narrated the story if always making you guess all the way until the very last word. if you like thriller's then this is the book for you! just brilliant!

it's also been brought by CBS as a TV series... I hope they don't ruin it!
