Healthy BDSM in a historical romance? HOT!

I really love HR erotica. Unfortunately, it can be very hard (no pun intended) to find well written books in this sub-genre, that are also true historical romances. Ding ding ding -- I FOUND ONE!

The Earl's Mistress is listed as the 10th book in a long series that isn't currently available on Audible, but it's definitely a stand-alone HR, so don't let that put you off. It also has that special romantic something that elevates it above the usual HR fair: a hero and heroine to fall in love with -- AND respect!

A gorgeous, and caring dominant hero -- who enjoys BDSM! -- finds a woman who fits his proclivities like a studded leather glove. He's not the typical tortured dominant hero: He doesn't think what he wants is twisted or wrong, it's just who he is. But he also understands it may not be for everyone. When he finds himself attracted to the new nanny he's interviewing, he realizes that what he wants from her would not be appropriate for an employee. After a steamy kiss between them shows that the attraction is mutual, he suggests another arrangement, one that she would find much more financially rewarding.

But Isabel is a lady, and his suggestion that she become his mistress is met with shock and then outrage. But after all, her situation is dire, and her responsibilities great -- and besides, she can't forget that kiss.

I loved the way that Tony was written. He asked for her feedback every time he elevated their play, making certain she was okay with what was happening between them, and giving her all the control. This only added to the intimacy, and gave the scenes a slow and deliberate tone that gradually increased the sensuality between them. Very nice nuance on Ms. Carlyle's part, and this respectful regard would be refreshing in any erotica book. This is a mature romance, in a really beautifully written HR, and should be savoured.

I also loved that Isobel was not a coward. Despite her upbringing, she's no fool. She loves his dominance -- and not because she's broken in some way, -- but because the BDSM dynamic turns her on, too. (A female submissive with a brain in her head? Jackpot!)

With great MCs (that don't fall to weak tropes and over-used cliche's), worthy villeins and a fully fleshed-out cast of side characters, this one is a keeper. It also has the perfect amount of tension, without over-powering the romance.

another great listen

This story so wonderfully written. I fell in love with Tadhg in the first book and Mairead is a wonderful choice to be his wife. Their story is a true love story, the way it should be. Despite many obstacles, they stayed true and believed in each other and the end was a welcome surprise, it left me smiling. I highly recommend to buy and read the books by Ceci Giltenan, she is a great storyteller. Congrats on your choice of narrators, Ms. Giltenan!

Listening to Tadhg come alive thru Paul Woodson's voice made me fall in love with him even more. Thank you Mr. Woodson for another great audio experience. Looking forward to more.

not just a mouse

I'd read this and thought it brilliant and now listening to it as well is absolutely thrilling, the story is fantastic and Paul did an excellent job in narrating this. At the end I was overcome with emotion and I had goosebumps.

This is a series, but this book easily is a stand alone book. I like the heroine - she is a determined little "mouse" hoping for courage. I particularly liked this book because there are not a lot of nail biting nerve shattering situations, and the intense situations that do exist in the plot are fairly quickly resolved. Excellent reader.

A good listen

My first Highland romance. I've returned so many lately as I became bored with the characters, so many are inconsistent. I think I've been spoilt by Georgette Heyer over the years. I stuck with this one, and in conclusion found it a reasonably good story line with likeable hero & heroin

I'm so relieved she rewrote the ending

This is a rewrite (and re-titling) of an earlier Veque novel, For Love and Honour. I'm so glad she did the rewrite. While the original ending may have been more correct for that time, as a romance it didn't work for me. If I wanted a depressing romance, I'd read Thomas Hardy. Thanks for the rewrite, Kathryn Le Veque - I love your medieval romances.

I truly glad how Kathryn rewrote the ending. Brogan and Avalyn belong together. William should had just stayed her friend because that all he was to her threw out the book. I truly didn't like the original version much at all. I enjoyed the rewrite..

Expected More

I've been a HUGE Karen Witemeyer fan since I first read "A Tailor Made Bride." "Full Steam Ahead" didn't feel like the author I fell for in that first novel. While parts of the story were very good, I didn't connect with the characters as I had in her previous novels. It's something that I can't pinpoint, or put my finger on, but it was frustrating. I loved the historical aspect of the story, and the science behind the steam engines, but it seemed like so much was repeated, plot lines were emphasized and re-emphasized again, and I wanted more than that. Frankly, I expected more than that.

A big issue was probably the narration. Yet again, 2nd book in a row, an old sounding narrator for a book about young people. I honestly feel like had the book had a better narrator, one that didn't speak so slowly, or emphasize certain words the same way every time like, "Lafitte Dagger," it would have been smoother, and I could have connected more to the characters. Now, Carine Montbertrand was definitely not as bad as the narrator for "Stealing the Preacher." That's a book I had to return and buy in print.

Loretta Chase deserves better

Loretta Chase is historical romance royalty, in my opinion, and her many fans have waited patiently for her books to finally appear in audio. Her magnum opus, Lord of Scoundrels, appeared earlier this year, as well as the three volumes of the Dressmakers series.

Those titles had first-class production values, but Isabella, sadly, does not. The narrator is good, but the sound quality is very poor. Blackstone Audio produced LOS and the Dressmakers, whereas Isabella and Knave's Wager (which also suffers from poor sound) are self-published. These are among Chase's earliest titles, so perhaps no publisher was interested in producing them in audio.

I've been hoping that the Carsington series would appear in audio, but I certainly hope that Ms. Chase either does not self-publish those titles or finds a better producer for them.

Good story; poor production

The story was quite fine. Toward the end I'm not sure why but I got a bit confused. Things went very quickly but they also seemed a bit disjointed. However, I enjoyed the story.

I liked the narrator, too, but the audio production was abysmal. It sounded like it was recorded in the bottom of a barrel. That's horribly unfair to the author and can't be blamed on the narrator either.

I like Loretta Chase's work and I'm sorry this production wasn't up to the standards we've come to expect in audiobooks.

Near perfection!

Thoroughly enjoyable for its delightfully witty dialogue, it's sensitively drawn, complex characters, it's suspenseful, entertaining story and its ability to allow the reader to truly exist, if only for a few hours, in the century it inhabits. An accomplished and deft literary hand at work here.

Poor production

The story was fine as was the narrator, but the production quality of the recording was so weak that I gave up listening. It sounds as if it were recorded in a bathroom.

Lovely story

I really did enjoy this book, my only complaint is the audio quality. I enjoyed Stevie Zimmerman's performance however the audio sounded like it had been recorded in an echo chamber and blurred out maybe could do with some digital retouching

Great Author & Great Narrator!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dark Lord: Book 1 in 'The Titans' Series, Volume 1 to be better than the print version?

The Audio Book is definitely better than the book, I was able to listen to it at work and while I was driving.

There is no book to compare to The Dark Lord, it is in a category all itself!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part that most moved me was when Jax finally realized that there are consequences for his actions. Not everything is as he was taught. Having mercy is not a weakness, but a strength. People will show respect to you, not fear.

I enjoyed this book because it kept my interest throughout the whole story. I felt their emotions swirling around me as the narrator (Kiff) worked His way through chapter after chapter of this fantastic story. Worth a credit? Absolutely the best Medieval Romance book so far that had me questioning "who needs sleep anyway?" as dawn broke. So that folks is a YES.

The dark lord was definitely my favorite. I loved reading about him changing. This story is kind of an adult version of beauty and the beast.

Book hog

All of these books are well written & very entertaining. Sorry for the spoiler but book 1 & tigers story are the best & I am close to done with the series. Ok honestly tigers book for me wast the best listened to it 3 times.

Very Good Novella, but Costly

This is a great novella, and interestingly enough, it actually advances the progress in one of the major story line arcs. While most authors that I read offer novellas in their series, you can usually feel free to miss them, since they are generally hook ups for side characters and don't advance the plot much, if at all.

We've met Deni and Jace in previous books. She's the wolf shifter who had a bad motorcycle accident that left her having spells where she goes feral and attacks everyone around her. Jace is the son of the leader of the Nevada shifter town, and he's came to Texas to help the leaders of Deni's shifter town, who are trying to find a way to remove shifter's collars.

Jace meets Deni and sparks fly right off the bat. Their chemistry is very good, and Jace's presence calms Deni's feral beast. I do wish the author had explored Deni's problems a little more, perhaps made them more of an obstacle than what they were. I love imperfect characters, and her's has been a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, while it is brought up, and some of Jace's efforts to calm her are mentioned, it's all a bit glossed over for my taste, and thus the 4 stars instead of 5.

The other thing I'm not pleased with is the price of this book. This was a novella priced as a full length book, and that seemed a bit much to me. I did spend a credit on this, but I did it grudgingly and with the feeling I was being robbed spending a precious credit on such a short book. Audible, you can do better than that!!!

Cris Dukehart's narration was close to perfect. She has a pleasant reading voice, and does a marvelous job with accents and both male and female voices.

Heartwarming story

This is one of the best shifter series. The narrator did a wonderful job. I enjoyed listening to the story. I loved the characters, and was touched by the heroines healing.

Another Hit!

LOVED IT! Another great book by Jennifer Ashley! Absolutely love this series. Can't wait for the next book...

What made the experience of listening to Feral Heat the most enjoyable?

Jace and Deni are two characters that have been mentioned in the past books of the series. I would never of thought the author would pair them together but I am glad she did. I am still intrigued at the segregation of the shifters, and the lopsided laws not allowing them to have modern technology etc.

Lovely story, extremely well-written

This is my first Sherry Thomas story, and it sent me to the web searching for more, It is so well-written with interesting dialogue, fully fleshed-out characters and a plot that has twists and turns that are psychologically motivated and completely believable. Felix Rivendell is the perfect gentleman, but his difficult upbringing leads to dark motives in his otherwise perfect demeanor. Rebecca Cantwell needs to marry, and she seems to be the last person a suitor like Felix would seek. But he sees in her the complement to his own dark personality, and because she distrusts him, he mistakenly believes she understands his dark side. Despite incredible and incandescent sexual chemistry, it turns out his motivations are not clear to her, and he must prove his love in a way that makes her trust him. How he does that makes him a thoroughly lovable hero and the story a delightful listen.

Strange and Disappointing!

Remember, this is only my personal opinion -- but I simply found this a very disappointing story. I have enjoyed other books by Sherry Thomas and so was surprised by the tone and lack of storyline. The plot was just too strange for me. I could not at all believe it. I did not come to care at all about the characters and so gave up half way. There was very little dialogue. Under these circumstances, the narrator did a very fine job.

First in the series, Hot for an HR!

I've recently read three novels by Sherry Thomas, only to discover that they are all linked in a series that neither Audible nor Amazon describe as related. This book is actually the first of the three, followed by Private Arrangements, and ending with His at Night. I can't say that it mattered -- each book is fine as a stand alone, and the characters are only loosely mentioned in the other books, but I do plan to read them in order next time. I highly recommend them all, especially as read by Corrie James.

The Luckiest Lady in London has the same passionate and serious tone as the other two books in the series, and for an HR, the sex was hot!

In this one, our heroine, Louisa Cantwell, is devoted to her family -- especially to the future welfare of an epileptic sister.

Fantastic & Steamy....I wanted more!

First off Rosalyn Landor is AMAZING. She acts out the book...not just reads it....If the character is breathless...she reads it that way! SUPERB!

Rebecca and Devon are a great match. I didn't want this book to end but when it did...I immediately downloaded the second book in the series and started it the same night.

This book is definitely not for the listener who wants PG love scenes. These aren't over the top...but they are super steamy!

I highly recommend this book and am already enjoying the second book.

Devon Sinclair, Heir Apparent of the Mad Duke

Would you listen to In My Wildest Fantasies again? Why?

Yes. Although I read the Pembroke Palace series out of sequence, " In My Wildest Fantasies" is the first book and the story of Devon Sinclair, heir apparent, which lays the foundation for the other books in the series. The other books can stand alone, but it's best to read them in order. Each book includes other family members, yet is unique in and of itself. Sometime in the future I will listen to them again; in order. I plan to read the last book soon; about the youngest sibling and only girl in the Sinclair family. I've enjoyed each book I've read in this series.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In My Wildest Fantasies?

There were many , but I liked the beginning when Lady Rebecca and her father are rescued by a handsome stranger when their horses run out of control.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's hard to choose a favorite scene because the book as a whole makes it enjoyable to listen to. If I have to choose one, perhaps it would be at the Duchess' birthday ball when Rebecca and the daughter of a Duke vie for Devon's attention. In her innocence Rebecca holds her own against the devious machinations of the daughter of a Duke who expects to marry Lord Devon.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Dreams do come true.

In My Wildest Fantasies you'll find humor, mystery, drama, sexual activity, sorrow; elements that make up a good book and made even better by Rosalyn Landor's excellent narration.

A new to me author I will read again!

I recently discovered Julianne MacLeans marvelous books. I actually read/listened to Married by Midnight first, not realizing it was part of this incredible series.
