    Publisher's Summary:
In 1879, near the small northern California town of Ridgeway, Lilly Warren is a young black woman who has recently lost her father. There is little time for mourning, though, as the responsibility of running the 26 acre farm now belongs to her. To make matters even more complex, her father has deeded the house and the land to her in his will with an interesting condition: that she share the land with a person she's never met, or forfeit ownership.
Ricardo Benigno is a Spanish captain of the Anna Juanita, a shipping vessel bringing spices and oils to the shores of California. Seeking out the farm of his old friend Leonard Warren, he discovers that the older man has passed away. To his surprise, Ricardo has also been willed joint ownership of Warren land, as long as he shares it with Lilly, Warren's only child.
The attraction between them is instant, and they both agree that marriage is the only acceptable way they can share the land. But can two people from such different worlds learn to love each other, or will Lilly's heart be broken if she dares to kiss the captain?

    Wonderful sweet romance
I absolutely enjoyed this book, I love to read multiracial historical fiction. It is nice to think of the past as something sweet and not always painful. Please continue to write more books like this. Look forward to hearing the story of prudence and Ricardo's brother
    Kissing the Captain
I loved the story of Richardo and Lilly. I also like the setting in the 1800's. I recommend this book to everyone who loves romance novels. Dianna Alexander is a great author.
    A must read!
This is the first historical romance novel I have read. The book held my interest from the first page to the last. There are surprises throughout the book. The author gives the readers insight into the lives of Ricardo and Lilly. There is also a character in the book that we all can relate, someone whom we seek wisdom. A must read...
    Enthralling
I love history and I love romance. This captured me from beginning to end. A very good read, you won't be disappointed
Kissing the Captain is a sweet surprise
Kianna Alexander, thank you for this novella. It was a nice surprise and I wish it was longer. It is very well written and the characters are well developed. Can't wait to read the other books in this series.
It was a pleasure to meet you and I am looking forward to reading your other books.

    wonderfully narrated
I got so caught up with the story narrated so beautifully by the British accented narrator. I loved it and I highly recommend it.
    Too Slow
Honestly, I love Julie Klassen's books, however, this book got off to such a slow beginning that I have never finished it. Sorry. I shouldn't write a review on something I haven't completed, but I didn't think the beginnings of this plot held up to what I expect from the author. I would recommend every Klassen book I've read or listened to before this one -- but would suggest a different title if you want a more gripping storyline.
    Excellent Plot
Dancing master Alec Valcourt runs from the gossip and shame of his father's bad behavior to hide in the little village of Beaworthy. There God introduces Alex to one young woman. , whose restless heart"yearns to beloved. Excellent plot. Well crafted writing and fairly well done narration. PG13 content.
    Clean romance
good story that is clean. romantic but not descriptive. The story builds nicely and leaves you with several surprises that tie things together nicely.

    Publisher's Summary:
A tantalizing reimagining of a scandalous mystery that rocked the nation in 1930 - Justice Joseph Crater's infamous disappearance - as seen through the eyes of the three women who knew him best.
They say behind every great man, there's a woman. In this case, there are three. Stella Crater, the judge's wife, is the picture of propriety draped in long pearls and the latest Chanel. Ritzi, a leggy showgirl with Broadway aspirations, thinks moonlighting in the judge's bed is the quickest way off the chorus line. Maria Simon, the dutiful maid, has the judge to thank for her husband's recent promotion to detective in the NYPD. Meanwhile, Crater is equally indebted to Tammany Hall leaders and the city's most notorious gangster, Owney "The Killer" Madden.
On a sultry summer night, as rumors circulate about the judge's involvement in wide-scale political corruption, the Honorable Joseph Crater steps into a cab and disappears without a trace. Or does he?

Entertaining Listen for NYC History Fans
Two caveats for anyone considering this audio book:
    1) If you don't have a particular interest in New York City history and/or the Jazz Age/Prohibition era, the story alone might not be enough to keep your interest. For me, much of the pleasure from this book was derived from the setting and the notorious cast of real-life characters.
    2) The story is told out of chronological sequence, so you'll need to pay attention to the month and day at the beginning of each chapter. (I wish I'd realized this from the start--it's easy to miss at first when listening instead of seeing the chapter headings in print.)
Overall, Ariel Lawhon weaves a nice narrative and Ann Marie Lee does a masterful job of bringing the characters to life, especially Stella Crater and Sally Lou Ritz. (The transition from the cut-glass elegance of Stella to the street-smart showgirl of Sally is truly impressive!)
The time-shifting narrative is a little hokey and clunky at times but on the whole I think it was effective in making the progression of the story more interesting.
And Lawhon's final reveal, while highly improbable, is still satisfying enough for me to hope it's actually true!
    Real life soap opera
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, this book kept my interest .
What other book might you compare The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress to and why?
Great gatsby...mainly because of the time period and scandal.
Have you listened to any of Ann Marie Lees other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
    Who Knew?
Excellent read. Lots of twists and surprises throughout . Keeps you engaged until the very end as all the pieces come together.
    Fabulous Story!
Murder, intrigue, romance depicting 1930s America in New York City. I had a hard time walking away from the book. A must read.
    Flat characters
What disappointed you about The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress?
The characters were flat, uninteresting, and not exciting in the least.
What was most disappointing about Ariel Lawhons story?
    The characters were cliches.

    Interesting story, terrible narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This book needs a different narrator. It was incredibly difficult to tell what she was saying from line to line.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Seductive Secrets?
When the truth about Alyce's father and her true identity are revealed to Julian.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Allison Cope?
    Rosalyn Landor or Clarissa Knightley.
Could you see Seductive Secrets being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    not really
    Any additional comments?
I was provided a free Audible credit for this audiobook by the author in return for an honest review.
    ANOTHER BOOK RUINED BY NARRATOR
This could have been a good book but I guess I'll never know because by Chapter 7 the AWFUL Narrator had given me a headache and I'd lost the plot completely so I gave up and took 2 painkillers.
When are the PIC's ('people in charge') of converting a paperback book into an Audio book ever going to understand that the choice of a Narrator is a vital part in giving the listener a good or bad listening experience and so it's worth spending that bit extra for an accomplished one otherwise just don't bother doing it. So PIC's, if you take the time to look back at 5 star listens you will see that the Narrator has played a big part in achieving the transformation of the written word and has successfully breathed life into all the characters, given them personalities and infused events with all the relevant emotions and it's this ability that makes us want to listen to them until the very end and to recommend the book on that basis.
Worth a credit? I wouldn't listen to it even if it was free so NO WAY NO HOW is it creditworthy. But 'Sample' the listen for yourselves and see if you could persevere where I have failed.
    Narration was terrible.
The story was fun and interesting. The narration was difficult to overcome. I finished the book by reading the kindle version.
    But I did finish it
Why? Why did the characters do what they did? Why did I suffer through the whole book?
This was dreadful. The narration was one of the worst I've listened to. Certainly not the worst but right up there - although I did like the narrator's voice. Her cadence and timing were off.
For whatever reason, I forced myself to finish this. It was confusing and tedious. The Epilogue was good.
I already have the second book.

The 2nd book in the series as good as the 1st!
Anne Stuart is such a wonderful writer. Like Stephanie Laurens, she writes characters that are three dimensional and have more than a bit of attitude. I'm a bit ambivalent about the earlier series Ice but really enjoyed the House of Rohan.
I was delighted when I saw that there would be a new series: "Scandal at the House of Russell". Basically three daughters are trying to find the person behind their father's death and public ruin. The first book in the series, Never Kiss a Rake, was excellent and I'm happy to say that the second in the series is too.
The Scandal series is a bit racier than the Rohan series but it's nicely balanced with some humor and really fine writing. As with the first book in the series, the male lead is nuanced -- not a completely nice guy but he comes around to the right behavior. The female progatonist, like her sister in the early book, takes a position in service for the person she's investigating. She has issues with her position as a maid -- working long days, backbreaking labor, and having to put up with difficult people is far outside her previous experience as a daughter of a rich man.
I enjoyed both books in the series and look forward to the third. The books should be read in order as there are themes that run across the series.
I would also like to highly recommend Xe Sands for the excellent job she's done on this series. I think of all of the female narrators, she consistently does an excellent job. With many female narrators, I find their male voices lacking. Xe Sands is able to comfortably carry different accents (Irish, ...) but also can convey a gravely nature to a male voice. I admit to a bias for books read by Jim Frangione and Simon Prebble -- but I am delighted when I see that Xe Sands will be providing the narration for a book.
Is this my all-time favorite series? No -- but it's definitely toward the top of the list.
And I'm _really_ looking forward to more books by Anne Stuart.
    An intriguing story
    Setting: Devenport, England 1867
Genre: Romance, with a bit of intrigue
Narration: First time I've listened Xe Sands. She reads the non-speaking parts with an American accent, a practice that used to bother me with books set in England, but her accent for dialog is appropriate for the characters. She does a good job.
This is the 2nd book in The Scandal at the House of Russell trilogy. Overall, it is an enjoyable listen.

    Members Reviews:
Not the series' best, but a lot of fun
This was not what I expected.
I adored "Promise Me Heaven," fell head-over-heels for the darker and intensely erotic "All Through the Night," and was so excited to know that Connie Brockway had finally written the story of Giles, who was present in both of the earlier books as a rejected love interest and showed glimpses of unexplored depth.
I had read on the author's own website that this third book in the series would be very dark; that when we met Giles again, he would have changed a great deal from the earlier books. If that was Brockway's plan originally, something must have changed her mind along the way.First of all, we pick up Giles' story almost exactly where we left him at the end of "All Through the Night": engaged to scheming Sophia and unhappily accepting of the fact that he lost both Kat and Anne (heroines of the earlier books) to "better men." Secondly, "No Place for a Dame" has very little of the darkness that made "All Through the Night" an almost painful if ultimately rewarding romance. In fact, "Dame" is more lighthearted and comedic than even the first in the series. That's not a complaint, mind you; just not what I expected based on what I'd read.
If I had to choose a weakest book of the trilogy, I'm afraid it would be this long-awaited final chapter. That said, it's still a delightful, sweetly sexy romance with an unconventional, imminently likable heroine. Connie Brockway is always delightful, and Alison Larkin is a wonderful narrator for this series. The way Audible is pricing this series, any and all three are an incredible bargain.
I'm hoping to see more of Connie Brockway's work on Audible. In the meantime, if you haven't listened to "The Other Guy's Bride," you're in for a huge treat. It's delicious!
CAUTION: SPOILER BELOW. If you don't want to know how these characters meet and fall in love, don't read any further.
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see Giles and Avery meet and discover each other. Instead, we learn that they've known each other for years, and have each secretly -and separately - longed for a deeper relationship with the other. That seems a bit like cheating to me.

    Loved it
Not much to say except I loved it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
    Stereotype at its worst
What would have made Border Fire better?
I just wish that these stories didn't lend themselves to so much stereotyping, I like to read a story where the woman have some intelligence, all these woman are just frustrating. The only reason they seem to be such a big deal is their physical attributes, and that's about it.
What was most disappointing about Amanda Scotts story?
the leading lady I just like to see some other quality in the leading ladies than their beauty.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
    performance was alright
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I. Loved. It!!!
I needed a break from several 'series' books that I've been reading and came across this one. It had really mixed reviews, both here and on Amazon. I decided to go for it, knowing that Audibles guarantee makes it worth the risk. It seems, based on the reviews, that people either loved it, or hated it. I happen to be one of the ones that loved it.
It took me a minute, as it always does, to get used to the new story and the narrator. This is actually my first time listening to Marion Hussey and I really loved the voice variations. She does a fantastic job performing, and managing, the various characters. It was super easy to follow who was who just based on the voices. I felt that Caroline's voice was too "whiney" for her character and at times it was really annoying, but it wasn't a huge deal and definitely not a deal breaker.
I especially appreciated the lightheartedness of the story. The main characters weren't overly dramatic when they learned the secrets the others had. Nicolas found Caroline's "deception" humorous and I was so happy not to have to deal with his anger and her regret. There wasn't a tremendous amount of sex, however the sexual tension was palpable.
I had a hard time putting this book down, and found myself looking for things to do just to buy myself some extra time listening. At the same time I was trying to take my time so it wouldn't be over too fast.
I would recommend you get it and try it. Audible has that fan-freaking-tastic guarantee so if you decide you hate it you can get a refund. Whats to lose?
    Lovely Story
Was very engaging. ..Mary Elena finally got her due! It was a lovely story...it is predictable. I wish there was more of Nikolas' view which the story lacked, but I am really enjoying Brenda Joyce's books as much Julie Garwood.
    Splendid Listen
I decided to buy this book because of Caroline's recommendation and I was so impressed with the book. I could easily relate to being 18 years of age with emotions running rampant. Where you want a love that seems impossible, and that you want a fairy tale romance, and you realize there is fairy tales and then there is reality.

Elias Addisons estate was thrust upon him when his father died, and it has been little else but a burden. When a friend brings him to the Sleeping Dove in an attempt to lighten his mood, the Duke of Lennox finds himself at the Bawdy Bluestockings piano, and together they begin to play a dangerous melody. When the Duke uncovers the truth about her, will he wish he had never heard the tune?

Josephine Grant, known as the Bawdy Bluestocking (or BB), plays piano in a seedy brothel called the Sleeping Dove. Her body is not for sale, but her conversation is. When Elias Addison, Duke of Lennox is dragged to the Dove by his friend, he spends his time with the piano player. They meet again, accidentally, at the book shop she owns. Elias, already interested in her Dove persona, is further fascinated by her. Especially when he finds out she is a political radical. Josephine has a scandal in her past and will not reveal who she really is.
The premise of the story is interesting, but the execution is average to fair. I think it could have been tightened up. And while the characters are okay, I just couldn't care that much about them. They're like acquaintances you enjoy talking to when you meet them, but they don't occupy your thoughts when you move on.
The narration was average. Could have been better if pronunciation of certain words hadn't pegged my cringe-o-meter. I would love to talk to a couple of these narrators to find out where they mis-learned the pronunciation of relatively common words. If you've got any French and a bare modicum of Latin, you know how to pronounce many of the words without any problem. Most of us do have the ability to pronounce unfamiliar words (thanks, Hooked on Phonics), or have the impetus to look them up.
Totally unrelated, but did you know that phaeton (you know, the sporty 4 wheel horse drawn carriage often mentioned in Regency romances) is based on Phaethon, the son of Helios, god of the sun? He drives his father's sun-chariot and crashes it. Kind of explains all those crashes in books (usually with the rake's brother holding the ribbons, his death making our hero the heir). Anyway, there are online dictionaries that provide audio pronunciation.
I paid $7.95 and it is definitely worth that and the time spent for the listen.
Finding it hard to get through.
I think I got this really cheap. The narration is fine, no problem there, but the writing is dense and difficult to track for me.
    Can't recommend it.
    Well written book
This book was a captivating read. It didn't drag in any part of the book. I really enjoyed this book!
    Good Read
Good read if you are into hot, historical romances set in between the poor and the aristocratic Leader.
