A Duke vs. a Duchess....... an entertaining match

Firstly, this is actually book 4 in the Desperate Duchesses series - I hadn't realised this and listened to it as a stand alone book, whilst this didn't detract from my enjoyment of it in any way, there were often chapters relating to another couple's marriage which I suspect may have been from previous books and it did not conclude their relationship which will be book 5 in the series This Duchess Of Mine. My point is, reading them in order would be beneficial but not absolutely necessary.

Coming back to this book, which I thought was funny, charming and a sweet romance about 2 virgins who were married by proxy at a young age finally meeting 11 years later (still virgins) and coming to terms that they are not each others 'ideal' partner and yet the chemistry is there. So, should they get an annulment or consummate their marriage - which proves easier said than done. Good likeable characters that make you want to scream, but it was also touching and tender and, of course, it's a ridiculous tongue in cheek romp in the eighteenth century and the epilogue has a surprising twist too!

Worth a credit? Yes definitely a typical E.J. story.

This may be my favorite in the series so far!

We first see Lady Isadore finally meet her duke at the end of the previous novel, "Duchess by Night." In "When the Duke Returns" we learn more about that first encounter and at last discover why Simeon stayed away from London, indeed all of Europe, for so many years. Neither Simeon or Isador is what the other expects, but they're immensely attracted to each other. More importantly, their relationship teaches them more about themselves and eventually they're able to see that their differences can make for a good partnership.

Initially, Simean was a difficult hero to fall in love with. He seemed like one of those people with a lot of "book smarts" (in his case gained from extensive travel) but limited real-life experience. One of the things I love about this book is that their first few weeks of marriage reveals that despite her gender, and societal constraints on women, Isador's beauty hides an interesting combination of business acumen and empathy.

EJ continues to tease us on the triangular relationship between Jemma, Elijah, and Villiers.

Cute & Entertaining Story!

This is only my 3rd M. C. Beaten book, all in "The Traveling Matchmaker" series.

I gave it 5 Stars, because I enjoyed listening to it, but I have to say I enjoyed the other 2 more.

I'm finding it harder to make wise choices for my listening pleasure lately, but feel pretty safe with M. C. Beaten books with Helen Lisanti narrating. Beaten is an entertaining read, with all the elements of a good book: adventure, romance, mystery & intrigue...with likeable characters and hateful villains.

I've just purchased #4 and look forward to hearing it.

If you haven't read/heard her books, I highly recommend them, and if possible starting with Book 1.

I like the characters and I enjoy the information about the time the book takes place. I know this is not 'great literature', but it is pleasant reading with good character development and a fun story with twists and turns in the plot to keep the reader entertained.

I don't usually write reviews but this book was so beautiful I had to share. Not only was the story great the narration was wonderful Barbara Rosenblat is one of my fav narrators but she out did herself on this book she made the characters come alive for me. The story made me cry and Barbara made it real. I love romance novels and don't get me wrong I do like a little trashy sex scenes sometimes but this story just didn't need it. I loved it! Buy it! Worth your credit ? Yes!

Loved this story, and the narration was perfect! I'm so glad I listened to it instead of read it, because all the accents were so well done. Such an interesting tapestry of characters and conflict.

Good Thinking!

Story very interesting. Feel you are "in the time" , and the dialog and thinking reflect those years and those living them. Enough controversy to peak interest in final resolution and enough curiosity to wonder if the outcome would be satisfying. It is!

Slow starting but worth it!

Enjoyed the story but almost quit because of the slow start and being lost. Other reviews kept me going and I'm glad I did! Loved it!

This intricate novel had a lot of excitement, well defined characters and romance, but the story line seemed to be enough for three books and too much for one. The end especially, although interesting, could have been a separate book by itself. I enjoyed the performance by Rebecca Cook and felt a little disappointed that the story line just was a little too much in an otherwise interesting novel.

The dialogue was corny. Not enough passionate scenes or attraction between the main characters. So much narration and not enough action. Wordy, wordy, wordy!

awful narrator

thin love story, might have been readable but the narrator of this is terrible at a posh accent,. the story has aaarnimals and aarction anf lots of other horrendously sounding vowels.

The one star rating is entirely due to the narration so apologies to Ms Foley. The story is amusing enough - but oh dear - this woman's idea of a 'posh' English accent has her saying 'fart' instead of 'fat'. The aaah gaffes are countless and ruin the flow and she also misreads several other words. Please, please dear, go on the internet and listen to the Queen and model your accent on hers! She is always right!

AS a warning, Ms Cook is not the only English imitator to fall into this 'long A, short A' trap.

For a good 'English' narrator, look for Barbara Rosenblat, Rosalyn Landor and Phyllida Nash.

not the best

If you don't care about writing or a slightly convenient character/plot development, this book isn't totally awful. For me, it's hard to enjoy because the writing quality isn't great in my opinion (which frankly distracts me from being engaged and getting pulled into the story, such as it is). I also find some of the twists and turns, in the way the hero and heroine relate to each other, a little unrealistic. Framed another way, the plot could be okay (it's a fairly standard recipe for a romance novel), but it's just difficult to get into this one.

Catherine Coulter, Night Fire Triology

The second book in this series, Night Shadow, was a great read. I enjoyed it immensely like I do all of Catherine Coulter books. It was packed with romance and action and kept me interested in same all the time

Great Love

Couldn't wait for Knight's story. It was great. He could have fought it more but the story was a fun read. Lily was a good choice for him. Live the children, it was a great touch.

Best of the three

I haven't read Night Storm yet (book #3), but considering the reviews, and how much better Night Shadow (this book; book #2) was than the first one, Night Fire (which also got poorer reviews), I'm sure this will turn out to be the best of the three.

Except for the way Knight treats Lily in the middle of the book, I loved his character. He's kind and funny and great with the kids. I thought Coulter's characterization of the children was great also. They really came alive to me. The love scenes are a bit steamy, and their first true coupling wasn't the best, but if you can live with that, you'll love this book.

ETA:I felt I should add this to my review and not only as a comment to another, after re-reading one of the other reviews:

I have to disagree with the comment about 'too much children'. Normally, I'm like that. I don't like to read a lot about kids when I'm reading a romance, but this book was an exception. Not only does the hero's choice to marry the heroine include accepting an instant family, but the children were likable, their characters were well-developed, and the scenes with them were enjoyable--often touching and or funny. All in all, I think the inclusion of the kids enhanced the plot, not detracted from it.

Horrible Narration!

What would have made Taming an Impossible Rogue better?

I love Suzanne Enoch books, but it couldn't even make it through chapter 3 because the narration was so bad! I will have to read this series in print.

I think I like A Beginner's Guide to Rakes better than this one but not by much. I really liked Keating and Camille. Love Greaves and can't wait to read his and Sophie's story. And I really couldn't stand Fenton, such a jerk. This book kept me entertained all the way through. Great sex, too.

As to the narrator? She was just ok IMO. Not great and not the worst I've ever heard. Most of her women sound alike, which is ok. And most of her men sound alike but at least they sound like men. She just has no emotion.

I would also like to say that the description tells us what the book is about or we can zip over to Amazon and look at reviews. This is AUDIBLE! What we need to review is the narrator. Does he or she suck? Why? Is he or she too nasal-y, too sweet for the kind of book he or she is reading, to gruff, too bland, too robotic, lacks emotion. Is he or she doing nothing but reading the book? Not changing his or her voice for the male and female voices? Is the narrator sounding the same whether she or he is reading a whisper spoken?

Most of us on AUDIBLE don't really care what the book is about. We want to know about the narrator!

Couldn't wait for it to end!

I really wanted to like this book, but there was just bad news at every turn. There was no light in this book until the very end. I simply could not wait for this book to end.

Not for the everyone

If you enjoy the old bodice rippers, this one is a great example of the genre without the multi-partner element that many of the more 'hardcore' BRs have. It's disturbing at times and I would advise treading very carefully if you are triggered by domestic abuse and consent issues. There were times when I was feeling quite upset myself. If this were a contemporary, I wouldn't have made it through. I'm able to tolerate things in a historical that I can't in a contemporary, because I try and put on the filter of the times/culture. This book is action packed and I never became bored. It also wasn't entirely predictable like some romances. Hence the rating.

Re: the audio - Justine Eyre did an excellent job with the narration. Her Charleston accent wasn't correct, but it wasn't jarring or annoying to me. I could overlook it.

John is a real pirate. He is a complete d-bag for the most part and can be quite frightening. If you want to know the level of violence toward the h, here's a spoiler.

He never slaps or punches her, but there's a lot of noncon/dubcon going on and at least one case of a rather brutal rape after she deliberately makes him jealous. He does give her a bruising bare-bottom spanking in the beginning. There are also many threats and lots of incidents of him using his "bruising grip" and calling her "bitch" and other sweet nothings. At times, he really could be the starring example in the 'How to tell if you're in an abusive relationship' pamphlet. (hide spoiler)] Anyway, I honestly only liked him for a brief period of time. Some may argue that the villain of the piece was Cathy's father, but it's John. John's insecurities, anyway. The actions of her father were clearly those of a man who loves his only child and thinks he's doing what's best for her. He went too far, but he had the social status and sense of entitlement to allow him to do things most fathers would only be able to dream about.

I was surprised that I ended up loving Cathy. The first chapter sets her up to be self-centered, spoiled, willful, etc... all the things that make for your stereotypical foot stomping heroine. She was all those things, but she was also smart and able to learn from her mistakes and genuinely cared about people.

Yes predictable as all romances are, but this book did not have the draw needed to keep me superbly interested throughout. I like a bit of excitement in my books. Twists and turns to the storyline that keeps the readers interested. Though I liked this book overall I feel it lacked that bit of excitement.

A nicely done ending to the series!

This book is my favorite of the series. I don't know if it's the story itself or the narration that did it. But this book is witty, romantic, and suspensful. I love the narrator, she is really good ! The best narrator of the whole series. I loved the hero! A perfect end to a wonderful series :)

Not the strongest finish

Compared to the other 4 books, this one was slow to get really started and seemed to drag at points, it was really only the last quarter of the book that I completely adored. the rest of it where as not horrendous, seemed to drag much slower in the build up and understanding the other 4 books have. Perhaps its because Cecelia does not draw me in as the other 4 children or "Hellions" did. It could also be that after 4 there are only so many romantic twist you can through into a story. the finality of the telling of what really happened to their parents was the highlight of this book and more intriguing then the romance between Cecelia and Mr Penenter.

My first - but definitely not my last !!

Alas, another handsome rake bites the dust. This was a gamble, I hadn't listened to any of GF's books before and, by the sounds of my other fellow reviewers - you're either going to love this or hate it. So, I was very pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it, I thought it had a good plot with likeable main characters that you routed for. It had a few sex scenes but they weren't too explicit for those of you who don't like a pinch of spice with your romance stories.

Worth my credit? Yes, I'm a happy listener and off to download another GF book.

This Book is Great!

Loving this book. No wussy, whiny women, no overbearing men, nobody will die without the other...Thank goodness!! This book is an actual novel, you know...like a good story. I will definitely read more from G. Foley. Narrator did a great job. Could had a bit more inflection for the lead female, but otherwise the book flows and is very enjoyable and I highly recommend it.

This story has everything that makes a story great. A love story that you can understand without all the extra drama, heros vs. villians and a willing to win at all cost. Truely a story that you won't forget. It was one of the best I have listened to in a long time.

Excellent Historical Romance

The story in this audiobook brings a breath of fresh air to the genre. What might appear at first glance to be a "been there done that" storyline for a historical romance (an upper-class woman who is unappreciated by her family but whose loyalty to them comes before her own happiness and a hero who is determined to have revenge upon that family but finds himself conflicted when he falls for the heroine) is turned into something unexpected by above average writing and atypical characterizations. Although I found the hero to be a bit idealized (he has surprisingly modern-seeming sensibilities) that was offset by the fact that he certainly had flaws and was a very well-developed character. The interactions between the protagonists was fun to read and the external forces at play in keeping them apart were unique.

The narration was above average and I was surprised (and vastly disappointed) to find only two other audiobooks narrated by Rebecca De Leeuw on Audible. Her character differentiation was excellent, her voice is very pleasant, and her ability to traverse the entire emotional spectrum in both male and female character voices without over-dramatizing was stellar.

Oh Come On!

Just how many times can one person be betrayed and misused by one's own family until they just stop trusting in them? For me a lot fewer times than this lady. Again we have strong women being stupid because of trust and daddy issues. This lady goes from watching her mother die from a broken heart, being misused by her brothers over and over again, to having a father who tells her to her face that he,"Thinks you are worthless". This even though you are the only one caring for him while he is sick! Enough! I don't know if I've become a little jaded in my life, but I'm beginning to feel let down by all my favorite writers. Oh, and I forgot that she gave up her virginity to a man that told her he would, "Do the right thing", after taking what he wanted. On top of that...he didn't do it very well at all, lol.

All that said, along comes the hero and he's the man responsible for the ruin your family is facing. He's doing this out of revenge, but he's really not a cold hearted man in his core. He tells you over, and over, with deed and words that you mean the world to him, and you turn your back on him for the father and brothers that have made your world hell? Come On!

Courtney Milan is one of the best writers I know when it comes to historical romance, so this book left me feeling down.
