Well done continuation of the Unwanteds series!
This is the 4th book in the Unwanted series by McMann. There are seven books planned in this series, with the fifth book Island of Shipwrecks scheduled for a February 2015 release. This was a good book in this series, my seven year old son really enjoys this series a lot.
I listened to this on audiobook on a roadtrip with my family. The audiobook was very well done. The narrator did an excellent job distinguishing between the different character voices. There are a lot of characters in this book so thats not an easy thing to do.
Alex is gaining confidence as a mage and makes his first try at bringing a magical creature to life. Him and his friends journey back to the volcanic island in an effort to rescue Skys mother. On the way they encounter many fantastical creatures. Meanwhile Aaron is struggling to maintain rule in Quill, but things are looking more intriguing for him when he discovers some secret creature deep in the forest. Gondoleery continues to work on her magic and Eva continues to plot Aarons overthrow.
There are a lot of characters in this book and a lot happening. I definitely enjoy Alexs parts of the book much more than Aarons. Aaron is just so unlikable and hard to read about. I also enjoyed that Simber was in the story so much.
Alex struggles with some large issues in this book. He has a budding romance with Sky but is worried that she distracts him too much from his job of ruling Artime. He also has some struggles with bringing a magical creature to life and second guesses himself a lot. However, Alex is growing and learning and becoming a better leader.
It was nice to have the group of friends back together in this book. We meet a lot of fascinating new creatures and journey to interesting new places. I go love this world and enjoy how it has been gradually getting bigger and bigger.
As mentioned above my seven year old son loves these books (he says 5 stars). ..me and my husband think they are okay (3.5 stars)...so we settled on 4 stars. There are a lot of characters in here and the story jumps around a lot; so I feel like its hard to get really engaged with the story or characters. I honestly find the books to be a bit boring and had some trouble with falling asleep while listening to them in the car. I have felt like this about all the books in this series, so I think if you are a long time fan of The Unwanteds series you will enjoy this book. If you havent enjoyed previous books you probably wont enjoy this one.
The book ends on an absolutely horrible cliffhanger which everyone in my family hated.

    Amazing book
This book is one of my favorite books and it is just a great book to read to pass the time
    loved it
great family book and it is also a great book to listen to by yourself!!!!!!
    Brilliant and Fun
During the current trend of Youth fiction saturated with dystopia, Jessica Day George has a gift for weaving a fun and intriguing story, that's clean and easy to follow, allowing youth to be heroes but not disregarding positive parental involvement.
Just as mysterious and exciting as book 1
I'm thrilled to say that, my daughter who hates reading, is addicted to this series. The second book is just as good as the first. It has a suspenseful plot line that keeps you guessing constantly. The book provides great opportunities to discuss theories, plot development, imagery, and characters.
    Fun story, good narrator
Have listened to this whole series with my children, and we all enjoy them. Fun, clean stories with siblings who love one another (so refreshing!). We also love Lulath's accent, as done by this narrator. Recommended for family listening with younger kids.

Ho hum on the 2016 MCBA list
Would you try another book from Stuart Gibbs and/or Gibson Frazier?
Ugh. This was on the "advanced" reading for 6th grade on the MCBA list for 2016. Both my son and I found the plot unexciting and redundant. I would not read another of his books but the storyteller had a good tone and enjoyable pace.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The author goes back and forth repeating the same story elements, reviewing the tapes, retelling the story of Marge slipping in poop, revisiting the images of the stuffed koala at least three different times. None of this added to the story and made it VERY long to get through,
Have you listened to any of Gibson Fraziers other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No. Not unless the entire story was rewritten without the annoying ending of the pretty culprit who left the cage unlocked getting a raise. Let's be real folks.
    amazing
Very nice mystery book must read. Interesting ending part of the fun jungle series must read!!!!!!!!!!!?

Introducing an extraordinary new voice - a magical debut that will make your skin tingle, your eyes glisten...and your heart sing.
Midnight Gulch used to be a magical place, a town where people could sing up thunderstorms and dance up sunflowers. But that was long ago, before a curse drove the magic away. Twelve-year-old Felicity knows all about things like that; her nomadic mother is cursed with a wandering heart.
But when she arrives in Midnight Gulch, Felicity thinks her luck's about to change. A "word collector", Felicity sees words everywhere - shining above strangers, tucked into church eaves, and tangled up her dog's floppy ears - but Midnight Gulch is the first place she's ever seen the word "home". And then there's Jonah, a mysterious, spiky-haired do-gooder who shimmers with words Felicity's never seen before, words that make Felicity's heart beat a little faster.
Felicity wants to stay in Midnight Gulch more than anything, but first, she'll need to figure out how to bring back the magic, breaking the spell that's been cast over the town...and her mother's broken heart.

LOVE TASTE AS SWEET AS COTTON CANDY
    YOUR WORDS ARE PURE MAGIC
This is one of the books were the writer goes out of her way to be magically descriptive. To make her words tasty and sweet. It is about the words and not the story. A couple of times I thought a story was going to happen, but it took a back seat to words, words and more words.
    THREADBARE
I was a military brat and I know that feeling of being a new kid. From kindergarten to fourth grade I went to a different school each year. I moved four times during my high school years. Like the main character it made me an introvert and very shy. I dreaded my first day at every school I ever went to. This could have been a story I could have gotten into. I like words, but when they help make the story, not when they take over the story.
    PUMPERNICKEL
I think Lloyd missed the boat, by not making this a teen book. If she would have made the main character a high school student, there would have been a larger audience for the story. I find it hard to believe that young kids would stand for eight hours of syrupy sweet words. This was like Dr. Seuss on steroids.
    BEETLE
I thought the narrator was great.
    Magical
My 12 year old daughter and I listened to this book together . it was like our own little book club! I enjoyed it as much as she did
    Poetic and magical
    Any additional comments?
Loved that this was read with the voice of the child. It's a book of family, friendship, community and love artistically represented and fun to read. It's a great book for preteens, teens, adults ... a sweet and magical story for all ages.

i have been reading this book since november and have loved every seound of it. In the begining its a little boring but dont give up on it.
    Very enjoyable read
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure in the beginning, but the further I went, the more I liked it. I was dying to get to the duel and I wasn't disappointed! I recommend this book.

My 5 year old loved Pete the Cat after I introduced him to the "white shoes" book. We then purchased the Easter and Halloween books, which he enjoyed as much as the original. This was purchased as a Valentine gift that he was thrilled to receive and wouldn't put it down. It is written exactly the same as the other holiday books, which was disappointing to me and is the reason for a four star rating instead of five stars. However, if your child likes Pete, he/she will enjoy reading this book, too.

Great for middle grade readers (and their families!)
This is a clever and fun twist on the Snow White story. Readers will relate to the main character, Abby, and her brother, Jonah, and they will be pulling for Snow White to become brave enough to stand up for herself. The narration was perfect and made for a fun and funny listening experience.
Great Twisted Fairytale with a Great Narrator
This series of books is really good for kids. If they don't know the actual stories, then Abby and Jonah tell you that story. And Jonah is so funny! In some of the books he likes to annoy Abby. Abby really, really wants to be a judge - who could blame her? I've listened to this series pretty much on repeat! - K. Aged 7
Fun book to listen to with kids. It manages to explain why so many fairy tales set my teeth on edge (really!? The little mermaid gives her voice up for a boy?) but does so without slamming it into your head with a feminist hammer. Emily Eiden has an amazing voice and does such a wonderful job with the narration. - M. Aged, like, 100 (she's really old)

    Amazing second book!
Let's just talk about the awesomeness that is the narrator! Take a minute to bow down to his super powers ;) He is fan-freaking-tastic!! The amount of different voices he can do is phenomenal. It felt like I was listening to an audio that had multiple narrators, he is that good!!
Now onto the book. I didn't think this would top book 1, but it did!! This had so much going on that it's impossible not to love. I mean, first and foremost we have the stunningly beautiful setting that is Norway! It's a beautiful place and the authors capture that perfectly. Then we have the Norse mythology! I love mythology, no matter where it's from but most of the mythology is Greek or Roman Gods, so it was nice to see the Norse Gods have their turn.
We have giants, well one giant to start, Snorri! We have Yggdrasil. Valhalla. We have Odin, Thor and LOKI! Loki, as the trickster god, is up to his usual no good in this, and wants to bring about Ragnarok, but he needs the giants help. Loki will try anything to do it so we see plenty of antics from him! We also have scientists added into the mix! Some of the most famous are mentioned in the story and I absolutely loved that fact! Anyway, add all those together and you get this amazingly addictive read.
Every single character in the book is well written and developed. Jake grows a lot and I loved seeing him take responsibility and try to do the right thing. Snorri was such a great character too. He was hilarious at times and the narrator really brought him to life.
The plot was fast paced and engrossing. As I said, I loved the mythology of it but we still have a great story at the core. Jake and his cousin are willing to do what they can to help Snorri get home and save the day. Snorri isn't the brightest but the boys treat him with respect.
In all, this was an entertaining, laugh out loud, engaging and engrossing read. Right from the start you are pulled into a land of myth and legend, of magic and mayhem and a land that you will fall in love with. It's definitely a series that all ages will enjoy and one that will firmly stay on my favourite shelf.
