There's a conservation officer at the beginning. If you like police you should read this book. There are three books in the series. I love this book!

Awesome real-to-life nature story

Highly recommend for all ages. You finish reading this book with the sense that you have made new friends, that living in the wild is possible, and an overall positive feeling about the life in general!

Okay Novel, The 1st Novel of the Series was Better

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, simply because I'm reading a book.

What could Jean Craighead George have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

To be honest, I really did not care for this sequel to the first novel. However, I cannot say for sure what Jean could have done to make it more enjoyable. Because I feel like anything I say would change the purpose of the sequel, so I would have to say leave the sequel as it is.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jeff Woodman?

The narrator from the first novel would have been my preference. Christian Rummel was his name. Jeff was a great narrator, but something about the way Christian read the story sounded better. For one thing, he narrated a little faster, which I was very pleased about. Because Jeff's narrating, I have to admit, sometimes made me want to stop listening and read it on my own.

Was On the Far Side of the Mountain worth the listening time?

Yes, after listening to the first novel I had to listen to the second. And the last novel of the series is definitely on my list as well.

I read the first book, and I really enjoyed it and I am so exited to read the 3rd book. I think that it was amazing how the author made the book so sad for people but a happy and amazing ending!

Didn't finish the series well

Yes, just to finish the trilogy, but it's not nearly as good as the first two.

I don't think he knew how to finish the story.

Love is the point

I loved this trilogy so much. The scope of the stories was wide--saving the very fabric of the universe. I was caught up in the characters, who developed over time. The ending was beautiful and there were so many surprises on the way. Whilst full of magic, the story like all the best, is deeply human. If at points briefly philosophically didactic, it's entirely forgivable because the pace of the plot moves quickly and much of the characters' choices depend on what they know of the universe.

Jim Dale's narration is outstanding. As far as I'm concerned, he could read recipe ingredients and I would be captivated. His narration of the children's thoughts made me laugh aloud. There is so much humor woven into the text, and a less experienced voice actor might have missed it. As it was, this was an incredible listen.

A lot of stories with this kind of scope have difficulty wrapping themselves up. I was pleasantly surprised and moved to tears by the ending of this trilogy.

It reminded me of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings (in a good way), and was full of its own surprises.

I expected so much more

After reading the Fire Chronicle, I was overly excited about the third and final installment. I must say, I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. I bought it in April 2015 and because the book was so slow and boring, I am just now finishing it October 2015. It was such a total let down and it ended like "so that's it..." I don't know which book is worse, this one or the final book in the Divergent Trilogy. :( Even Jim Dale's character voices changed a bit and he couldn't even make the book any more interesting.

Best series I've listened to in a long time!

I enjoy listening to YA fantasy and the Book of Beginnings Trilogy is one of the best series I've listened to in a long time. It kept my attention throughout, with a strong story line and excellent character development. As far as Jim Dale goes... what more is there to say. He is just simply the best narrator by far. The characters come alive under his expert guidance.

Cinderella

I like those kind of books as it makes you see the same story with a different directing and cast .. I liked this version of Cinderella it really felt like a movie

Pretty good book

Even though it's backed off the movie I feel it has a special place in Disney. It could be better but it was a great book I think it's good for ages 5-8 cause it's a fairy tale but has parts that would be intense for younger kids. Cinderella is a great book and movie even though it has many different movies and books!

What made the experience of listening to The Whispering Skull the most enjoyable?

The narration added so much to the story by bringing the characters to life. She successfully carried the various voices whether male or female characters.

What did you like best about this story?

The mixture of light heartedness and creepy in the context of a mystery worked to bring the reader along and pull them into the sorry.

What does Katie Lyons bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She truly brought the story to life adding the appropriate dimensions of emotion and carrying the tone of the story. Brilliant.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Another very good ghost story

As I said for book 1, Stroud writes a really good ghost story. This one is no exception. I've liked the first 2 so well that I'll be buying the rest of the series as they come out.

The narrator for this one is different from the first book, but she does an excellent job. The ghosts' whisperings she did are particularly creepy. I could easily see her telling fantastic stories around the camp fire. I don't see her listed for any other books on Audible, but I'll be surprised it stays that way for long. Lyons clearly has the talent for narrating books.

Between the story and the performance, this was a very enjoyable book to listen to.

The story is just as good as the first book, but it's hard to discern who's speaking. The narrator doesn't use distinct voices for the different characters.

People of any age will enjoy this book!

I can hardly express just how much I love the two books (so far) in this series! If you haven't read the first one, please go back and read that book first. If you have even the mildest sense of humor you won't be sorry.

There are so many giggles and guffaws while I read these books. And a million smiles. I don't want it to end!

Magic and mayhem abound as Hilary Westfield, now an escapee from Miss Pimm's Finishing School for Delicate Ladies, is a proud member of the VNHLP (serving the high seas for 153 years). The VNHLP is getting weary of Hilary's rather unpiratical (i.e. not like a pirate) behavior and has sent her a warning. But the Enchantress of the North has been kidnapped! Would it be piratical to rescue her instead of slaying a sea monster or vanquishing a pirate king? Hilary doesn't care! She's going to do the very nearly honorable thing and search for her anyway.

Along the way, she runs afoul of the Queen's Inspectors (with their requisite dust brushes and magnifying glasses), pirates honorable and dishonorable, and snooty High Society types. She even has to (gasp!) attend a High Society ball in a cabbage-colored gown. Not to worry though. She has her cutlass and her magic piece hidden within it. And her magical gargoyle in a large beaded purse.

Katherine Kellgren is just the perfect reader for these books. She has a real talent for comic timing and her voicing alone for many of these characters will make you smile.

Lots of Hilarity (get it?) and smiling and giggling is in store so it would be most unpiratical to delay listening to this book any further. Grab your cutlass and magic piece and join the fun!
