Excellent lesson in life!

Michael Crouch skillfully and lovingly voiced each character especially the honorable Perry Cook. This wonderful book gives us unique very human people in an unusual situation , and challenges us not to judge a book by its cover.

Feel Good Amazing!

such an amazing story. Could not put it down. Ends and I want to know more about Perry and Jessica.

Fun and Inspiring

This was a fantastic book! The narrators did a wonderful job of capturing the voices of Perry and Jessica, and drawing me in to the story. I kept finding things to do around the house so I could continue to listen! I loved the journey of Perry in discovering his (and his mother's) pasts. And Connor did a great job in writing the villain. Stepdad Tom was the quintessential condescending adult, but he also had heart and had redeeming qualities. The listening experience on this one was fun, especially since it was so much based on auditory storytelling among the inmates, and the narrators did a good job with the voices. Highly Recommended.

Release date: 02-01-16

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 348 votes

Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10

Publisher's Summary:

Can one boy stand between two kingdoms at war?

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless - until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy, a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal.

But Jaevid's case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid's future. While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king's private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders is willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor. Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

Critic Reviews:

"Not just another dragon story; this memorable escapade is fast-paced and packed with action. It will leave readers on the edge of their seats." (D. J. MacHale, author, The SYLO Chronicles and Pendragon)

Members Reviews:

Starts with artificial, exaggerated reading but......

I've always liked the legends of dragon riders and their dragons and we always seem to start with the young dragon picking a youthful, untalented, inappropriate male but they become a single unit to conquer their enemies, usually highly placed corrupt individuals or royalty. Sometimes both. Fledging is not far from being a cookie cutter work but with some different characters, some new twists, and a "wild" dragon doing the selecting and having a rather droll sense of humor, this listen is well worth the credit and time. But At the third chapter I was despairing of having a narrator who was using an exaggerated, artificial voice that was ruining a good book with his too enthusiastic, artifical reading. Thank goodness by the fifth chapter he had relaxed and began a natural cadence read. I haven't looked but I'm sure he does the next book. Hope he starts relaxed and doesn't waste any story.

A fun new dragon series with a twist.

This new dragon series has a twist to it: the lead character is half-human and half-elf. As a result, he is disliked but nearly all humans and elves.

The story gets off to a slightly slow start, but the action and drama later on is worth the somewhat slow start. The slow beginning is necessary to set the foundation for the lead character's home life and background as well as his entry into the elite dragon riders' academy. His chief instructor and his best friend turn out to be his sole support, along with his unique dragon. There are two female characters who lend potential love interests as well.

Overall, this is a strong start for this young adult series. I am also a big fan or Eragon and the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Brisngr, Eldest, & Inheritance). This series is a bit lighter weight, without the added complexity of dwarves, extensive use of exotic languages or such a wide cast of characters and subplots. Nonetheless, Fledgling is worthwhile in its own way and on its own unique strengths.

Critic Reviews:

"Narrator Andrew Eiden deftly captures the colorful vernacular of Washington State in the 1890s. His Western twang gives authenticity to 12-year-old Joseph.... This story is full of emotion, adventure, and a strong sense of time and place." (AudioFile)

Grit, perseverance and family...

Absolutely powerful. Unlike many readers, this is my first book by Gemeinhart and most assuredly won't be my last.I'm not normally a historical fiction/adventure reader, but this story was simply wonderful. I chose to listen to the audio on our road trip and highly recommend it. The narration was excellent. I laughed and cried (A LOT!) and felt like I was Joseph's champion traveling right alongside him. Very well written, I felt like I was there in the west during that time.

I can't wait to share this with my students. My boys who love history and adventure will be thrilled with the pace of the story and its twists and turns. I can even see my girls enjoying this. You don't have to be a horse-lover to love it. Its about grit, love and most of all family.

I love it

I really like this book because I think its charters are very strong and its very entertaining to read

Interesting story, but ...

It needed something more. Humor maybe? The beginning was original, but then it got a little predictable. My overall reaction is "meh."

Amazing Book

Amazing Book! Definitely a book to show you to do what you love and never give up.

Wonderful book

This is the most moving audiobook I have ever listened to. It's a great story about baseball and courage and love. A satisfying plot and cast, especially Jeremiah, a character you'll never want to forget. AND a superb, pitch-perfect performance by Michael Crouch, which just makes it almost too much. A perfect book for the kid you love, and perhaps a perfect book for us adults who need to remember the nobility of team sport at its best. Highest possible recommendation.

Heart with wings!

If you love baseball and people with courage and heart, you will love this book. Michael Crouch draws you into the story with his voice. His Jeremiah makes you laugh and cry. He expertly introduces you to the other cast members who are sometimes quirky, endearing and frustrating. You will fall in love and will stand up cheering!!

Learning how to speak German

Book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I purchased the first two Harry Potter books in

German. Iâm currently trying to learn German and thought this would be great way to reinforce my lessons. Itâs definitely a challenge and not as easy as I thought. But itâs still fun way to learn German.

Fun reading; context helps with difficulty

The level of reading is good for students by the end of German 2. It won't be easy, but if you know the series, the context will help. It's fun reading, and this is from an adult whose remembered high school German is sparse.

fantastic!

A little loved but as was expected from a used book. I love my copy and came in super early

Harry Potter Made Better :)

Of course, you can't argue with the original British English version, but I absolutely love picking my way through this book (along with the other six, which I incidentally bought for much, much cheaper in Germany). Apart from being a great story (as I think everyone knows) it's also perfect for German language learners. It's not too much of a mouthful, I've found that I can read it with about 80-90% fluency now, looking up an occasional word. I definitely recommend it!

Well worth it!

Exactly what I was looking for! A great story and a language exercise all wrapped into one!

Too painful to complete

I purchased the entire Harry Potter series in German because I wanted to listen to the whole thing again, but in German. I love the story, and it was fun hearing it in German so that I could polish my language skills again in a fun way.

The first book was pretty good, but a little quirky with the voices. But I decided to buy the rest of the series. The character voice development just became more and more painful as the books went on though.

As I was listening to the books I learned that there was a different version that was read by another narrator. I thought that since I bought them all I would just be able to deal with it though.finally as I was listening to book 5, I couldn't handle it anymore. I decided to buy book 5 narrated by Rufus Beck to try that version. There was no comparison. I will not finish this book, nor the rest of this series. I'll pay extra to get the Rufus Beck version instead.

It feels like everyone is always just screaming in this book, even when they are having fairly normal conversations.

hidden secrets revealed

great read. really good to find out the parts of the story that the film didn't show.
