Publisher's Summary:
Young Martin is your average nine-year-old boy, just one who happens to frequent graveyards, and reads books about spells and monsters. He happens upon one such spell book and finds a spell that allows him to bring back the dead, and the one he brings back is one Young Miss Victoria Blackwell. Miss Blackwell had no real friends to speak of when she was alive, so she had to make ones out of her own imagination. The problem was no one else could see them. With Martin's Book of the Occult though, that was a problem of the past. There just so happened to be a spell capable of making her friends visible to the rest of the world. It also just so happened that her friends are real monsters with particular peculiarities.
A new problem arises when Miss Blackwell's now visible friends are set loose on the town one Halloween night, causing all sorts of trouble for Martin and Victoria. Written by K. N. Parker, author of The Death of Death, The Deceased Miss Blackwell and Her Not-So-Imaginary Friends is a macabre children's tale about true friendship, which, unlike people, never dies. For ages nine and up.
Members Reviews:
One of my favorite Halloween reads.
The author sent me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
A young boy has some strange likes. He prefers cemeteries and monsters to other things that the typical 9 year old boys like. As Halloween draws near, he checks out a book of magic to get some ideas for costumes. What he gets, is a book on how to raise the dead and other strange things. Of course, things get out of hand.
This book is intended for children 8 and up. But I feel it will appeal to people of all ages. It is my new favorite children's Halloween book. Of course, it can be read at any time of the year, but I can see it being a Halloween tradition.
The story has that perfect blend of humor and the macabre that makes a great Halloween story. While there are plenty of creepy things, nothing is too scary for kids. The writing is almost lyrical which makes it a pleasure to read.
The author also illustrated the story. He says he was influenced by the artist, John Kenn Mortensen. The drawings also reminded me of the art of Edward Gorey and Gahan Wilson. The illustrations were perfect for the story.
I highly recommend this for kids and adults that like a touch of creepy without the gore. Fans of the artists mentioned will enjoy the book for the illustrations if nothing else.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this utterly bewitching book, and I feel so lucky that I did. K.N. Parker has an imagination to rival the most creative authors out there, a fact I knew after reading The Death of Death a couple of years ago. The story alone for the Deceased Miss Blackwell is enchanting all by itself, but add to that the absolutely gorgeous and creepy illustrations, and you have a book for the ages. I had heard that Mr Parker had had this tale in his mind for years, but lacked an illustrator. That strikes me as oddly fortuitous, because his own drawings are spot-on and lovely. I can see this being the first of many elementary aged, illustrated, scary, deliciously macabre tales. A whole set! There's no one else out there that I know of doing this, and I just know there is a market for it.
