Lessos for Young and Old

The main characters in this story are like many of my middle schools students. They want to fit in, and be accepted by others in school. Looking and acting different make that difficult. Associating with someone who is different is just as bad. The main character Kieran has been trying to be part of the âin crowdâ since his best friend moved away. He is always on the fringe as if he just isnât quite good enough. It is usually these kids who get into trouble by going too far to fit in. In Kieranâs case, his difficulty fitting in just got harder. His cousin Bon, whom heâs only met once before and doesnât really like, shows up at his school and his home. Kieranâs friends Mason and Lucas make fun of Bon for his long braid and his not as nice clothes. Bon seems unfazed. He doesnât care about fitting in. Things get tougher when Julia the new girl that Kieran has a crush on, starts hanging with Bon. Kieran really feels betrayed. He joins in the bullying of his cousin.

Things arenât always what they seem, and this author did a wonderful job of showing that. Bon is a character I not only felt so sorry for, yet admired. He had his eyes set on where he wanted to go in life and kept his head up as he headed that way. He was a true friend and cousin. We learn more about Julia and her secrets as the story progresses and see how and why Bon and Julia became such good friends. We have all had that one black sheep in the family that we didnât want to acknowledge. This book made me look back at when we were younger and how I treated that cousin. My treatment of them may not have gone to the extremes that Kieranâs did but I was just as guilty. They are someone I now look up to and admire.

I think one of the reasons I liked this book so much is because I can see the value of reading it to my students and having it on my shelves at school. I also love books that take me back to my own childhood and show me how I was not much different than the character,s and teach melessons I should have learned long ago. Yes I can say I learned a lot. I am currently dealing with one of those black sheep in the family and realized I was headed the wrong way. This book was a great reminder. It is a great thing when a childrenâs book can teach a lesson to an adult. Because after all, we all want to fit in. This book looks at the dynamics of âfamilyâ, bullying, and jealousy.

What did you love best about The Dreamstone?

My daughter is an auditory learner, and she prefers audio books to the printed variety. For kids like her (who may struggle with reading the traditional way), this series is an excellent choice for hooking them on books! It has action, magic, strong characters, and life lessons all rolled into a neat little package that is sure to please any middle grader. Beyond that, the audiobook is a quality piece of work. The narrator was expressive and highly skilled. He gave a distinct voice to each of the characters that fit them perfectly. It was a pleasure to listen to!

What did you like best about this story?

With each book the author releases, his writing quality gets better and better! I've read all of his middle grade books, and I thought Mikey Brooks really hit his stride with this one! All the characters are solid, with real problems theyre struggling to overcome, like Parkers anger at his estranged dad. Through the course of events, he learns how to begin the forgiveness process. I love it when a character grows and becomes a better person by the end of a book, and I found myself cheering for Parker and Kaelyn as they made the difficult choice to stand up for whats right, pitting themselves against the more popular crowd at school. Moreover, their friendship continued to grow and develop in this novel, and I cant wait to see where theyll go from here.

Which character as performed by Anthony Bianco was your favorite?

Even though she doesn't make frequent appearances in this installment, Cerulean was my favorite character, for her spunk and her big heart. I liked the accent the narrator gave her. It fit her personality perfectly!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

In Dreams, no one can hear you scream.

The plot was well-paced and flowed naturally from one hurdle to the next. The only problem I have with this series is that the author likes to end on cliff-hangers, leaving us poor readers begging for the next installment! (Do I hear an evil laugh?) Kids arent the only ones who will gobble up this series faster than a plateful of pastries. In my mind, its right up there with Fablehaven, Far World, and the host of other National bestsellers that have graced the middle grade shelves in recent years.You wont be disappointed by The Dreamstone!

Loved this book! It's a great spin on dreams--something we all experience. The author did an excellent job of creating suspense and adventure while having the characters deal with real life problems such as bullying and insecurity. Parker and Kaelyn (the main characters) are stumbling through "growing up" when they are thrown into a crazy adventure and I'm glad I got to go on that adventure with them.

There are many characters in this book and the narrator did a good job of distinguishing (with his voice, of course) between each of those characters.

It is a great book for all ages, proving that a book doesn't need graphic sex or vulgarity to be good! It is a fast read, one that would be perfect for younger readers/teens with the right amount of fantasy and imagination without getting dragged out. A young boy, who is used to being the one picked on, is knocked unconscious by bullies, in his dreams he finds he has "powers" beyond the normal and is thrown into a new world where he is important to those around him. These dream friends accept him, respect him and encourage him.

Cliff hanger. I'm too old for this book. But shouldn't a children's book at least have a recognizable plot arch? This one rambled. Then I got to the end. Wait, no I didn't, because it doesn't have one.

cyborgs, talking animals, pirates, multiple dimensions, ultimate evil, mean school kids, mash it together. I was not thrilled with this book, too many types of characters and too much stuff so that you did not have the opportunity to get engaged with any one. The reader does a fine job with what he had to work with but I found myself getting frustrated with all sorts of different themes. I would listen to Will Watt again, I will not listen to the next book though.

Love this new story!

Fun short story about a new kid on the block who needs a friend. He figures out a fun way to entice RJ and his friend to notice him and become his friend. This takes the boys on a journey of discovery to find out what is leaving clues to a strange green substance that they keep finding everywhere. It all works out in the end.

Another Great Mystery

We all come across far too many people who don't clean up after their dogs and this is a great short mystery for kids focusing on the importance of making sure pets don't leave unwanted gifts for others to find (or tread in!)

Your kids will love this book. It's funny and the characters are brought to life brilliantly as in all the books by this author and there is a great moral to the story which having 3 dogs of my own, I heartily approve of!
