Né à Nantes en 1828,

entame des études de droit à Paris. Il y fréquente les milieux littéraires et écrit des pièces de théâtre, des livrets d'opérettes et d'opéras-comiques.

Après le succès de

(1850), il se consacre entièrement à l'écriture, et étudie assidûment diverses disciplines scientifiques.

Ses premiers récits, publiés en 1851, annoncent les thèmes de son œuvre future.

En 1857, il épouse Honorine, dont il aura un enfant, Michel.

Dès 1863 commence une collaboration fameuse entre l'écrivain et l'éditeur Pierre-Jules Hetzel, avec la publication de

Au cours des 40 années suivantes, Jules Verne écrira plus de 70 romans d'aventure et d'exploration, tous remarquables par leur précision, tant au niveau scientifique que géographique ou historique.

Parallèlement, il effectue de nombreux voyages en Amérique et en Europe. Jules Verne s'inspire aussi de l'histoire contemporaine.

Installé en 1872 à Amiens, il cesse de voyager en 1886 pour exercer pleinement sa mission de conseiller municipal tout en continuant à écrire.

Jules Verne disparaît à l'âge de 77ans.

My favorite AVI book

My favorite AVI book! I loved this book and read it aloud to my kids a couple of times. It appeals to any kids who feel like they don't fit into the mold that is expected of them. The story is told in such a funny way that you laugh out loud. The villain of the book is that guy that everyone knows, and the kids are hilarious and resourceful. It's a great read.

Title; S.O.R. Loser

Have you ever been forced to playa sport? If so S.O. R Loser by Avi is the perfect book for you. A young man named Sitrow loves school but hates sports. he has to see his way through playing soccer. The kid named Sitrow was going to pick a sport for the school team but he missed baseball, basketball, tennis and football. The only thing is left is soccer. The only thing he hates about the school rules are that you must play one sport a year. His coach Mr. Lesster (also the social studies the teachers) push the team through their unlucky year.

Their parents are behind them all the way.

They had practice a couple days later. They really needed help. They could not even score on their own goal. When Sitrow gets home he starts complaining at dinner about how stupid that soccer is. The parents don't care they think that some exercise is good for the smart young man. The next day when he enters his 8th period which is Social Studies and which Mr. Lesster is the teacher. Mr. lesster announces that they are going out side to practice soccer.

They had a practice, a week from that day and their 1st game and it was bad 32-0. The coach was mad but he knew that it was only the first game. The next 4 games they lost. Now he whole school was cheering for them to win. The principal was telling them that the soccer team never lost. Will they keep losing or will the come back and be victorious.

S.O.R. Losers is a good read for all!

S.O.R. Losers is a humorous book about a group of intelligent and talented, but non-athletic, seventh grade boys who are required to participate on a soccer team at their sports-minded school. The boys on the losing team are viewed by parents and school administration as rebellious and are frowned upon because of their "bad" attitudes. What's wrong with accepting the fact that you stink at sports anyway? Avi portrays realistic characters and a humorous style of writing in this book, making it a good read for all ages! (And for those curious Avi fans, you'll find his last name spelled backwards in this book!)

A book I'd probably never, ever find again...

I was pleased to find a childhood favorite that I could pass on to my 10 year old son. The book although old, was in great condition and arrived very quickly.

Western-themed frontier fun

"Humbug Mountain"

This 1978 novel is another fun, frontiers-y epic from author Sid Fleischman, about a traveling family led by a newspaperman father and his stolid wife, who decide to settle down in a new settlement in the high plains which turns out to be a little more rustic than they anticipated: turns out it hasn't even been built yet! Stranded in the middle of nowhere, they are beset upon by bandits, buffalo bones and galloping gold prospectors. The tone is a little rougher than some of his other out-West books, with the menace of violence from creepy badguys Shagnasty John and the sinister, club-wielding Fool Killer. Probably best for tweens, though still leavened with humor like Fleischman's other books... Another enjoyable book, with illustrations from '60s folksinger/artist Eric Von Schmidt... give 'er a spin! Great kids story

This is worth the read to oneself or to one's kids. Sid is an excellent author and I'm now on a mission to read all of his books.

Side note: this isn't a long book.

A great book!

I definitely recommend this book for children. I am a kid myself and found the book to be an excellent way to spend time reading this book. I love the storyline and the way it captivates a poor family like the Flints. Awesome book.

This book has an amazing combination of mystery, adventure, fantasy, and everything in between! When a family decides to head to a new land they are amazed at what they find and how they going to servive! I couldn't put this book down untill I finished the last page, and then I read it over again!

A Childhood Favorite

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would. I read this when I was about 11. It is for older children but even as an adult I enjoyed listening to it again. I had several brothers and sisters so I could very much relate to this book.

What did you like best about this story?

It is a very sweet story and one that encouraged me to be good as a child.

Great book to incorporate into your 3rd-4th grade math classroom ...

Great book to incorporate into your 3rd-4th grade math classroom as students struggle with memorizing multiplication facts. The boy in the book is struggling with memorizing his facts; however, with hard work, he completes the final quiz by the deadline. This book would be a great option for integrating literature and mathematics, and the real-world struggle the boy experiences is something all students in the classroom will be able to relate with and understand.

Four books in one

Great stories! Please be aware that this is not a set of four separate books, but one book. I had hoped to have my two children reading separate volumes at the same time, but since this is one book, that is not possible. The stories are good, but four-in-one makes for a thicker, hard to lie flat volume. Buying the books individually may be more desirable.

Good reading

I got this for my 10 year old daughter as part of her birthday gift this year. She really like it and would like to have all the books in the series.
