    Publisher's Summary:
On December 28, 1992, two days before her tenth birthday, Katie Beers disappeared. She had left for an outing with a close family friend, John Esposito, and her whereabouts remained mysterious as the year drew to a close and her family grew frantic, fearing the worst. On January 13th, Katie was found alive in a secret, dungeon-like vault beneath Espositos Bay Shore, Long Island house. Families nationwide followed the story of Katies heartwrenching ordeal, as she bravely survived the isolation until her nearly miraculous rescue from a setting reminiscent of The Silence of The Lambs. Katie's harrowing story reveals a chilling side of human nature, even in the seemingly peaceful suburbs. And her fate as the smiling survivor of a troubled family raises disturbing questions about the plight of children across America: children like Katie, whose trust can be so easily betrayed.

A Little girls courage to survive the unthinkable
    Any additional comments?
The story of one little girls kidnapping ordeal, and her courage to survive. This is every parents worst nightmare. A close family member who you should be able to trust around your children only to have them cause a chain of events that would change one little girls life forever; and a city that did not give up on their search to bring her home. This book is a must listen as it gives the perspective from the author of what happened on the outside.
I have listened to many books narrated by Alex Hyde-White. This book is only one of many he has done. But with all of them just like this one, he has done a fantastic job on giving each character from the book a unique voice to enable each of them to tell the story thru the narrators talents.
This book is a must listen that will keep you on pins and needles, pull at your heartstrings, and feel for Katie thru her heart wrenching ordeal.
    The Katie Beers Story
What did you love best about 17 Days?
That Arthur Herzog, got into Katie Beers' head, feeling as she did, being under ground with only a TV,
What was one of the most memorable moments of 17 Days?
Meeting Katie Beers, who said she used Arthur's book to help her write hers. Seeing Katie Beers on CNN described as the poster child for Missing Children as she turned out so well.
Meeting most of her relatives, being at the trial, and meeting her foster father, who raised her so well, after she was rescued.
Have you listened to any of Alex Hyde-Whites other performances before? How does this one compare?
Alex Hyde-White has only done this book....so far.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    The Katie Beer's Story
    Any additional comments?
I think one would have to option both books, Arthur Herzog's and Katie Beer's to make a film.
    What a great read!
This is a story about Katie Beers, a young girl who disappeared two days before her tenth birthday! This book tells us about her search and family history, along with the scary statistics from the FBI about kidnappings and pedophiles. Written more like a novel which is more interesting, rather than a non fiction, this book does a good job at information.
The author, Arthur Herzog III does a great job at writing this book in such a way to hold our interests.

    Title: Blood Highways
Subtitle: The True Story behind the Ford-Firestone Killing Machine
    Author: Adam L. Penenberg
    Narrator: Meral Mathews
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-25-14
    Publisher: Wayzgoose, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Blood Highways is the heart-wrenching account of the biggest product liability case in history: the Ford-Firestone fiasco. At the center of the story are two people: Tab Turner, a charismatic trial attorney from Arkansas, who has made a career out of forcing Ford and other automakers to own up to knowingly trade human lives for profits; and Donna Bailey, a single mother and outdoor enthusiast who fought back from the brink of death to confront those ultimately responsible for her accident.
Weaving together harrowing depictions of the accidents and their consequences with the stories of the men and women who labor to police the auto industry and its reckless cost-cutting, Blood Highways will transform the way you view corporations, the government, the courts, and the media. Above all, this audiobook shows the price the public pays in wrecked and mangled lives when companies focus more on shaving costs than making quality products.

Greed and the person who fault back
    Any additional comments?
This is a gripping story that will pull you in as it scares the crap out of you. Two big business work together to bring you death, injury, mental injury so they can make more money never caring how the people will deal with their loss and the pain they will cause. It wasnt their fault if not theirs whose? They say it is consumer error I say give these whistle blowers a pat on the back. Well done. I have no doubt your eyes will be open in so many ways. I feel sure you will look at the car you drive and pay more attention. I am guessing after reading this you will do a little more background on what you buy because it could be your death or the death of the ones you love.
I just loved the narration of Meral Mathews he gives each victim a voice that really pulls you in. His voice is strong but gentle as he puts the pain in the voice for each victim. You have no trouble knowing who is talking and just what they are feeling. His male voices are just as nice as his female ones. There are no background noises or uneven noise levels just a smooth rich clear voice that pulls you in and doesnt let you go. I hear the passion in his voice he his self feels for each person and what each victim feels. I feel he was as touched by each person as I was. I felt the audio was better by the narrator than if I had read it. I had to trouble picturing the pictures in my mind as the car flipped or the victims being trapped. It is a picture I wont forget for some time to come. This is the first time I have listen to anything by this narrator. I am very much looking forward to listening to more from Mr. Mathews.
The author gives you the facts in so many peoples lives as he paints the pictures for you to see what each person had to deal with. He shows you how two main companies did what they wanted without any thought or heart for the consumer. It took years to bring these two down a peg or two. They havent fully recovered which is what they deserve as their victims will never be the same. My heart really goes out to Donna and her friends along with all the other who have lost their body parts and family to a giant who could care less. I found this full of information at times I thought it gave a little too much background on a few. I am more into the facts of the victims and how they had to deal with the issues. I was surprised over the McDonalds fight I didnt have all the facts.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
A brilliant examination into how the internet is profoundly changing the way we think.
In this groundbreaking book, Wired writer Clive Thompson argues that the internet is boosting our brainpower, encouraging new ways of thinking, and making us more not less intelligent as is so often claimed.
Our lives have been changed utterly and irrevocably by the rise of the internet and it is only now that we can begin to analyse this extraordinary phenomenon. The author argues that as we rely more and more for machines to help us think, our thinking itself is becoming richer and more complex. We're able to learn more, retain it longer, to write in curious new forms, and even to think entirely new types of thoughts.
'Outsmart' is filled with stories of people who are living through these profound technological changes. In a series of postcards from the near future, we meet characters such as Gordon Bell, an ageing millionaire who is saving a digital copy of everything that happens to him, and Eric Hovitz, one of the world's leading artificial-intelligence researchers, who is creating software that is designed to let your computer sense your mood and then predict when you're going to be most productive at work.
Lucidly written and argued, 'Outsmart' is a breathtaking original look at our Brave New World.
    Editorial Reviews:
"We should be grateful to have such a clear-eyed and lucid interpreter of our changing technological culture as Clive Thompson. Smarter Than You Think is an important, insightful book about who we are, and who we are becoming." Joshua Foer, New York Times best-selling author of Moonwalking with Einstein.
    Critic Reviews:
"Judicious and insightful. Thompson avoids both the hype and the hand-wringing so common among digital age pontificators" Walter Isaacson, New York Times

Title: The World's Greatest Arguments Against Legalizing Marijuana and Other Drugs
Subtitle: These Six Arguements in This Book Will Help Those against Marijuana and Other Drugs to Make Their Position Much Stronger
    Author: Trevor Clinger
    Narrator: Alan Bennett
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 24 mins

    Publisher: Trevor Clinger
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In this audiobook, I bring six arguments that the general population has against marijuana and other drugs. In having a neutral standpoint on the legalization of all drugs, I try to analyze both parties and consider each side's argument. With each argument, I define the argument, provide examples, and then give a reflection to that argument from a supporter standpoint of legalized drugs. This paper is non-biased and just incorporates real arguments with real responses. I hope you can gain some information from this listening and have better understanding of this political issue. I try to mix both moral evidence, as well as factual evidence, that is general knowledge in terms of medical facts, to support each argument and reflection. I possess A Bachelors Degree of Organizational management, and an Associates Degree of Management Technology. This qualifies as a scholarly article.

THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN TO CONGRESS!
Would you listen to The World's Greatest Arguments Against Legalizing Marijuana and Other Drugs again? Why?
Yes, I would because this book just makes sense and uses arguments based on actual facts rather than political rumors.
    Wow, what a great audiobook!
I never thought the arguments for Marijuana would be provided in such a clear and intellectual way. The author did a great job of backing up every argument fully. I think these points should definitely be considered if a state and/or federal government was contemplating whether or not to legalize the plant.

  • Over Our Heads Audiobook by Rulon Stacey, PhD, FACHE

    Title: Over Our Heads
Subtitle: An Analogy on Healthcare, Good Intentions, and Unforeseen Consequences
    Author: Rulon Stacey, PhD, FACHE
    Narrator: Wayne Edwards
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-14
    Publisher: Fire Starter Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Over Our Heads, by Rulon Stacey, points to good intentions and government interference.
Costs continue to soar, and Americans already crippled by a sluggish economy struggle to pay escalating insurance premiums. Politicians, entertainers, and other public figures regularly demonize healthcare professionals as the ones who created this situation through either greed or mismanagement. Meanwhile, it seems as though government solutions just make things worse, and the problems keep piling up.
How did we get to this point? The roots of the problem are inseparable from the solution. Government intervention, meant to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, has instead created a system so convoluted and complex that we can no longer keep up with current policy.
This audiobook is Stacey's attempt to describe, in a concise and relatable way, where our national healthcare policy went wrong. His analogy centers on a grocery store in the fictional town of Capital Springs and details what happens when the city government decides to issue food vouchers in order to help the community s poor and then gradually begins to reduce their reimbursement.
As the mayor tinkers with the program, the results of his actions lead to higher prices, inadequate distribution, and a situation analogous to where healthcare finds itself right now. The book ends with the election of an even more generous mayor and a grim prediction of what will happen to the industry if current public policy remains unchanged.
This book will be welcomed by healthcare professionals searching for a way to tell their story, political reformers building a case for change, students seeking a defined case study on the healthcare cost crisis, and citizens seeking insights on how we got so far in over our heads and where we are likely to end up.
    Members Reviews:
This makes it easy for a layman to understand our health crisis in America
This book in story form walks you through step by step in how we have arrived in the state we are in today with healthcare. But does it in abstract by following a fictitious grocery store owner. You can see there are good intentions, but making decisions where the consequences were either unknown or more likely ignored. Masterfully done and a quick read.

    Title: Sorry about That
Subtitle: The Language of Public Apology
    Author: Edwin L. Battistella
    Narrator: Jonathan Yen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
People do bad things. They misspeak, mislead, and misbehave. They lie, cheat, steal, and kill. Often, afterward, they apologize. But what makes a successful apology? Why does Joe Biden's 2007 apology for referring to Barack Obama as "articulate and bright" succeed, whereas Mel Gibson's 2006 apology for his anti-Semitic tirade fails? Naturally, the effectiveness of an apology depends on the language used, as well as the conditions under which we offer our regrets.
In Sorry about That, linguist Edwin Battistella analyzes the public apologies of presidents, politicians, entertainers, and businessmen, situating the apology within American popular culture. Battistella offers the fascinating stories behind these apologies alongside his own analysis of the language used in each. He uses these examples to demonstrate the ways in which language creates sincere or insincere apologies, why we choose to apologize or don't, and how our efforts to say we are sorry succeed or fail.
Each chapter expands on a central concept or distinction that explains part of the apology process. Battistella covers over 50 memorable apologies from McDonald's, Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Bill Clinton, and many more. Moving back and forth between examples and concepts, Battistella connects actual apologies with the broader social, ethical, and linguistic principles behind them. Listeners will come away from the audiobook better consumers of apologies - and better apologizers as well.

    Insights into making amends
"Sorry About That" offers terrific insight into the public world of mistakes, regret, and making amends. So often when there is conflict or errors that are hurtful, the injured party wants to and needs to be acknowledged and to receive an apology. But so often the apology is self-serving and wanting. This book helps us understand what it really takes to begin the process of making things right.
The examples offered are in the public domaine but the principles apply to our personal lives as well. While it is a linguistic approach to the subject, it is very readable and accessible to all.
    First Rate
Enlightening, wry, learned, useful! I find myself now analyzing the public apologies of sports or political figures, according to "Sorry About That." Easy to see sincerity or--more likely, insincerity and deflection of responsibility. The case history style of the book makes for really entertaining reading. First rate.
    So sorry, Oh sure
I enjoyed the analysis of apologies of various people involved in the events of the day. Of particular interest was being reminded of memorable historical moments and the author's description of them. You should read the book if you are interested in historical events or if you want or need to make an honest apology for your past or future behavior.
    Five Stars
An eye opener on how the public lies.

Title: The Search for an Abortionist
Subtitle: The Classic Study of How American Women Coped with Unwanted Pregnancy Before Roe v. Wade
    Author: Nancy Howell Lee
    Narrator: Claire Slemmer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-22-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
This eye-opening look at the abortion process prior to the Supreme Courts landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 is now more relevant than ever, with a new introduction by the author revisiting history that is still salient half a century later.
In the years before Roe v. Wade, women seeking to end their unwanted pregnancies had limited options - many of them dangerous, even potentially fatal, and nearly all of them illegal. This groundbreaking work by sociologist Nancy Howell Lee, first published in 1969, takes an intimate look at the entire abortion process - from the initial decision to terminate a pregnancy through the procedure itself and the aftermath - providing an incomparable view of what is still one of the most controversial and divisive issues in America.
Based on interviews with 114 women who had illegal abortions, Howell Lees book reveals how the abortions were procured and paid for, and looks at the lasting effects the experience had on the participants. The interviewees were open and honest about what influenced their decisions, how they conducted their search for someone to perform the procedure, and the physical and emotional aftereffects. With many state governments across America currently passing new legislation that restricts and, in many cases, effectively bans abortion, an eventual return to the pre-Roe days threatens the well-being of millions of women, making Nancy Howell Lees pioneering study more relevant than ever. It is a must-listen for pro-choice and pro-life adherents alike.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Read
Solid book on the days before legal abortion.
This is definitely NOT leisure reading, and is focused less on the women who sought abortions than how they did it, the communication networks they used to obtain an abortion, and the impacts of society on those communication networks. There are a lot of charts and such on the research done, but there is also a very human element to the unnamed women who made up the data. It's a fascinating look at what it was like not only before legal abortion, but also before people could use the Internet to research a subject like this privately.
    The Bad Old Days
The depths and lengths which these women went to surpasses any research I did on my graduate research papers. I can't ever imagine being so determined to risk my own healh--or life in order to obtain something. Yes, I liked horror movies as a little kid, but I would not want to be in a real-life verision of one, where there is no director yelling 'cut'. Not my idea of fun at all. The writing itself is good. It's just really difficult subject matter to get through. Not leisure reading.
    Five Stars
A very much so needed book.
Groundbreaking research -- Insights still valid today.
A look behind the myths and legends, Lee's groundbreaking book relied on extensive interviews with the women who sought and obtained abortions -- legal, illegal, quasi-legal, and self-induced -- in the days before legalization. Lee examines the factors that led women to choose abortion, the means by which they found an abortionist, and their attitudes toward their experiences.
