Title: Literature Review of the Effects of Child Maltreatment
Subtitle: A Compelling Book on the Damage Children Suffer in Today's Society
    Author: Xavier Zimms
    Narrator: Gary Roelofs
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-03-15
    Publisher: Proxy Publishing
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
"Child maltreatment can lead to a number of psychological issues, including: depression, substance abuse, anxiety, suicidal tendencies, and even in cases that were not sexually based, a higher risk of sexually-transmitted disease."
Culled from research done over the past four decades, this is an in-depth look at the far-reaching consequences of maltreatment and abuse on children - long into their adult life - and the impact of it on society as a whole. This silent epidemic is a global phenomenon that haunts the edges of communities around the planet, often cloaked in fear and shame, but with devastating consequences on individuals, their communities and the world around them.
To deal with child maltreatment research reveals defining it and understanding how it affects the behavior of the children suffering from it are the first steps in addressing this human crisis. While most people are aware of physical abuse consisting of beating, restraining, choking or causing some kind of physical injury, they may not realize there are just as insidious forms of abuse that have nothing to do with bodily harm. Neglect and psychological abuse can be just as devastating to children and have lifelong negative implications for victims of it.
When you learn how common sexual abuse of children is around the world you will be shocked and horrified. How can such a thing be so common? The research gathered and shared in this child maltreatment guide will be an eye-opener for those in the medical, psychological, and education fields.
In a final grim message, Literature Review of the Effects of Child Maltreatment lays out the harsh reality of the consequences to a society that allows its most innocent members and the future of humanity to be so violently mistreated.

Good but not enough info in this very short treatment of child abuse
The information here is valid, although no creative effort on the part of the
author. It is simply a small review of literature on child abuse. The author
did not really elaborate on the often life long effects resulting from childhood
    abuse.
There is a marked difference in outcomes from the child's dealing with it.
The ones who accept a victim role, often are damaged for life. The ones
who adopt a survivor role and refuse to be victims often go on to the
helping professions and become responsible members of society.
Now where in this review was any of that mentioned.
You see I am a victim of childhood abuse. My father brutally beat us and
got sadistic pleasure from inflicting pain on his children. I ran away
from home but was captured by the police and brought back to that
home. My parents then took me to a parish priest for "counseling".
His only form of counseling was having sex with a 14 year old boy.
I chose not to be a victim and rose above it, got a degree in Psychology
and Theology and went to graduate school for Clinical Psych.
The reviewer is the author of the Kindle book entitled: Sex Education
for Adults Secrets To Amazing Sex and Happily Ever After Too
I've written better term papers on the subjects with sources
Didn't really care for this. The way it's wrote up you really don't learn anything from it. It's just facts, but facts that don't elaborate on anything.

    Critic Reviews:
"George Rider is a sage, a rascal, a raconteur, a patriot, and a supreme sentimentalist, who trains his gimlet eye (more accurately, his vodka-gimlet eye) on the passages and rituals of American life and family. He is also a literary revelation: the fresh new voice of the Bad-Boy Octogenarian." (David Friend, Vanity Fair editor of creative development)

  • The Automatic Diet Audiobook by Charles Stuart Platkin

    Title: The Automatic Diet
    Author: Charles Stuart Platkin
    Narrator: James Fouhey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-24-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In the audiobook The Automatic Diet, listeners discover how to harness the power of time-tested behavior modification techniques and empower themselves to lose weight and keep it off, automatically. All successful dieters share a common "secret" to consistently maintain their weight. The secret is that they do not have to think about what they are doing. Their food choices are instinctual and they already know what to eat when faced with the disastrous dieting situations we all encounter in everyday life. Whether it's a cocktail party, on an airplane, or at an Italian restaurant, they know to react and choose wisely. The Automatic Diet takes you step-by-step through a process of self-analysis, as well as powerful techniques based on practical steps that you can put to work immediately. This easy, accessible process will lead you to an understanding of your own patterns of success and failure in managing your weight. Platkin then guides you to understand your own motivations, and how you can use this knowledge to overcome self-defeating habits with positive behaviors you can sustain for a lifetime. The Automatic Diet is founded on the principle of "automaticity". Automaticity is a psychological term used to describe the unconscious way in which we make choices for our daily behaviors. Activities like setting an alarm clock at night, putting on shoes before you leave the house, buckling your seat belt when you get in a car, and remembering how to drive to the office - these activities do not require much thought, we just do them. If we consciously thought about each decision that we make, we would be exhausted at the end of a day. Through automaticity, we unconsciously automate some of our routine processes. While automaticity has been working against you and your weight loss goals for years, The Automatic Diet will show you how to redirect your knee-jerk impulses so they can work in your favor!

    MagiÑ that you create yourself
This is not one of "revolutionary diet that will change your life in 10 days", this is a compilation of well-known truths like - eat enough, but not more, stick to interesting physical activity, deal with your emotional baggage and remember that feet are for walking, not pressing your car's pedals! If you follow advices given by the author you will create your own diet and sport regimen, keeping which you'll eventually reach your ideal weight. Good solid logical book.

Didn't. Really learn anything new but reinforced sound behavior information and I felt it gave me the support I needed to move forward. I have tried it all and know there are no quick fixes but a methodical plan to once and for all to change my eating style one decision at a time and look at behavior and choices in the long run.
Simple book. It verified what I knew and gave new ideas.
I highly recommend this book for any one who wants to lose weight. I started 6 months ago and lost 50 lbs. I wish I had this book. He has many ideas that are so simple. I saw myself in the book why I eat, patterns to break and advice how to do it. I will be re-reading this book over and over.
    good info
What I like the most is that they're not trying to sell anything! Good common sense is what they are telling everyone is needed to find a lifestyle of eating and exercise.

    Publisher's Summary:
Thomas Henry Huxley was a prominent member of the scientific community and an early advocate of evolutionism. His work and public debates served to explore this idea and to usher in widespread acceptance, forming the foundation of our current understanding of biology and the place of man in the cosmos. Evolution and Ethics is a work which highlights the ethical and theological implications of the theory of evolution. This work is a compilation by Huxley of his grandest and most sweeping work, that which had the greatest social impact. He was a well respected man, highly visible to the public, and a key figure in the establishment of scientific professionalism. His work reflects the movement to scientific materialism which supplanted the religious perspective as the dominant viewpoint among European thinkers. The narration of the full text of Evolution and Ethics is preceded by a summary which includes a biography of the author, an overview and a synopsis of the work. Also included are an analysis and an investigation of the historical context, criticisms, and social impact evoked by the work. Evolution and Ethics is one of the key works which fosters an understanding of the impact which the theory of evolution had upon society in and the theological implications of this revolutionary perspective.

I Narrated this book. It was an incredible task ...
I Narrated this book. It was an incredible task as it was written in the 19th century for reading not speaking and text in Latin and French plus a difficult subject matter...Interesting but time consuming. When finished..the company who published the book did not pay me what they had indicated claiming this was a not for profit book. Interesting that it's 30 dollars per book...profits going to them. I have flagged them in the voice over world so no others will spend their time narrating for this company and then not getting paid. Shameful.
    Where is "Science and Morals"?
IF you are curious to read this collection of essays, I would suggest looking elsewhere. While most of the essays are correct, "Science and Morals" is completely - and erroneously - missing from this collection. It is replaced by an essay called "Natural Selection not Inconsistent With Natural Theology," and simply slipped in under the title of "Science and Morals."
To compound the difficulty with this edition, there is no formal 'Table of Contents.' To get to a certain essay, one literally needs to scroll through the entire book. One cannot simply click on an essay title in the table of contents and go to that essay. (One would really suspect that, as this is simply a copy of the Gutenberg Project's file, amazon might have put some work in and created a table of contents in order to justify that $1+ hike in price. (Why not just get it from Gutenberg for free?)
Other than that, this is an interesting essay collection and I must confess that the second essay - in which Huxley works at convincing us that the "secondary cause" of evolution does not rule out belief in the "primary cause" opf God - is interesting.

Interesting material that the narrator dumbs down
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
    Yes. Once.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Jefferson and his adventurous palate
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator used a generally chirpy tone I associate with many elementary school teachers. That's fine if you are a third grader, but I felt spoken down too. The author seemed bent on making the material really interesting--for children--rather than letting the material stand on its own.
Could you see The American Plate being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
A TV series, yes. Food is a great vehicle for teaching history. How about a series hosted by Rachel Ray and Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
    Any additional comments?
Given a choice between the print version and the audio version of this book--take the print. Hands down.

    Title: Heidegger's Ghost
Subtitle: Applications of Existential Philosophy as a Therapeutic Model
    Author: Hannah Spicer
    Narrator: Lesley Ann Fogle
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-14
    Publisher: Hannah Roles
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Existential Psychology is characterized by a stark explanation of psychopathology and a nearly hands-off approach to therapy. Because the theoretical framework is based in a habit of mind rather than a particular treatment form, the existential approach can integrate fairly well with most forms of psychotherapy. It allows for sensitivity to culture and religious beliefs that other schools of thought do not address, but it can be harsh. As of 2006, no work has been published to statistically validate existential psychotherapy and so the ideas presented by the theorists that created this field continue to remain just that: ideas that, while valuable, remain unproven.
    Members Reviews:
More about existential philosophy in general
More about existential philosophy in general than Heidegger in particular, if it can be said that Heidegger had enough integrity or authenticity for a phenomenon of particular to uncover itself in any "clearing."
18 minutes long. Almost no information included. Not even a coherent short essay. This is a total waste of your money.
I bought the audible version. Note that this is 18 minutes long in total. There is almost no information included. This is not even a coherent short essay. This is a total waste of your money. Also, this is about existential psychology in general and doesn't address anything specific about Heidegger. You get infinitely more information on the Wikipedia page for existential psychology, and I'm sure there are other sites which would provide even more information. There is NO reason to purchase this item. None whatsoever. So useless as to be a scam.
limited understanding of modern practices of the many existential therapies that are currently being practiced.
The author demonstrated a very limited understanding of both existential philosophy and current existential therapies. A very disappointing read overall.

    Terrible!
What would have made Live Anxiety Free Today better?
If I had never listened to it.
Would you ever listen to anything by Chris Adkins again?
    No.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Pauley?
    Narrator was fine.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Anxiety.
    Any additional comments?
The information presented in this book is done so in a very irresponsible way. Listening to this book actually made me MORE anxious! I was looking for some helpful advice on dealing with a phobia, but this just freaked me out on a whole. The information is negatively presented and some info just plain erroneous. This guy or girl has no right considering themselves an authority on anxiety. Period.
    Not helpful...
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This book was very heavy on describing the symptoms and manifestations of anxiety.
I found it to be anxiety provoking. In fact, the words are still uncomfortably ringing in my ears. Furthermore the solutions were short and glib - talk to a professional, take medication, exercise - all superficially helpful if you haven't done any research at all.
Perhaps the material would be helpful if you are dealing with an anxious person and want some very basic information, like how to recognize if anxiety is indeed a problem for them.
What could Chris Adkins have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I would have enjoyed a more positive and specific emphasis on solutions - practical, hands on, actual help. Stuart Smally gave better counsel on SNL.
What about Michael Pauleys performance did you like?
    The performance was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Live Anxiety Free Today?
I would have limited, or at least softened the long lists of symptoms which actually served to bring them on as I listened, and intensify some of them. Nothing about this book made me feel better. I thought it was going to make me feel better, not worse.
    Any additional comments?
This claims to be a "how to" book.

    Title: Unnatural Selection
Subtitle: Why the Geeks Will Inherit the Earth
    Author: Mark Roeder
    Narrator: P. J. Ochlan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-07-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Unnatural Selection is the first book to examine the rise of the "technocentric being" - or geek - who personifies a distinct new phase in human evolution. People considered geeks often have behavioral or genetic traits that were previously considered detrimental. But the new environment of the Anthropocene period - the Age of Man - has created a kind of digital greenhouse that actually favors their traits, enabling many non-neurotypical people to bloom. They resonate with the technological Zeitgeist in a way that turns their weaknesses into strengths. Think of Mark Zuckerberg versus the towering, Olympics-bound Winklevoss twins in the movie Social Network.
Roeder suggests that the rise of the geek is not so much the product of Darwinian "natural selection" as of man-made - or unnatural - selection. He explains why geeks have become so phenomenally successful in such a short time and why the process will further accelerate, driven by breakthroughs in genetic engineering, neuropharmacology, and artificial intelligence. His book offers a fascinating synthesis of the latest trends in these fields and predicts a 21st century "cognitive arms race" in which new technology will enable everyone to become more intelligent and "geek-like".

Marks of effective information sharing might include the degree to which it:
    Inspires curiosity and research.
    Prompts new awareness.
    Invites thought and debate.
Encourages decision (form a point of view) and action.
This book accomplishes each of these and likely more (which have not yet occurred to me).
Interesting Look at Geeks and Culture
This book has a fairly wide breadth of topics. It starts out with how the game has changed and smart, nerdy, or geeks have risen to the top in many ways. It follows that with a very long chapter which describes all the basic types of geeks... at least according to the author. It covers cognitive enhancement and transhumanism.
The part of the book I didn't like as much as the rest was the categorization of all the different types of geeks (e.g. app geek, financial geek, etc.). It wasn't ok, just seemed a little excessive to me. However, the rest of the book was really good at providing a high-level and seemingly on target overview of how the world is changing and what that means. Essentially the cognitive elite are going to be the winners.
    Recommended.
You will learn some new things from this book.
Well done and thoughtful overview of the current situation we face as a society and as individuals. The new devices and invasive technologies are not going away, so we need to control them. Sadly, few will.
Easy to read and thought provoking look at our genetic ...
Easy to read and thought provoking look at our genetic inheritance and influence on our economic prospects.
In the genre of Malcolm Gladwell books.
    A compelling, prophetic read...
If you want to understand where humanity is heading, read this book. A prophetic, sometimes disturbing and deeply insightful book. It is also a most entertaining read.
