  • Love, Again Audiobook by Eve Pell

    Title: Love, Again
Subtitle: The Wisdom of Unexpected Romance
    Author: Eve Pell
    Narrator: Eve Pell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-08-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In Love, Again, Eve Pell beautifully and thoughtfully concludes that life experience adds dimensions to the art of connection - and that we all stand to learn something from unexpected romance. How do old people meet new loves? Eve Pell was 68 when she convinced a friend to set her up with Sam Hirabayashi. Ten years her senior, Sam, a fellow runner, was handsome and sweet. Soon Eve and Sam were plunged into a giddy romance that began with a movie date. "It was crazy," Pell writes. "It was wonderful."
Pell wrote about their romance in a New York Times Modern Love column and received a wave of responses from people who recognized their own stories in hers. This thing, this late-in-life love: It's growing, it's everywhere, and it's transformative. In staggering numbers, old people are meeting and falling in love - in senior living facilities, in retirement homes, in bars, in grocery stores, on cruise ships, on the Internet - brazenly, quietly, unexpectedly. People once written off as too old for intimacy are having romances, beginning intense affairs once thought to be for the young.
Part memoir, part journey to a new frontier, Love, Again is illuminating and heartwarming. Speaking with poets and artists, a retired nurse and a retired coach, environmentalists, philanthropists, and teachers - couples whose partners' ages range from 61 to 96 - Pell reports on their relationships, from saying hello to knowing they'd found the one, from blending routines and traditions to overcoming judgments and challenges. These widows, widowers, divorcés, and never-marrieds open up about old love versus young, the thrill of sex, and the looming shadow of mortality. At the core of this book is wisdom: what we all can learn from the experience, regardless of age.
    Critic Reviews:
"I remarried at 75 and have followed one hundred marriages from age 50 on. Eve Pell knows what she is talking about. Her book is touching, eye-opening, inspiring, and wise. In addition, it is beautifully written." (George E. Vaillant, MD, author of Triumphs of Experience: The Men of the Harvard Grant Study)
A heartwarming, eye-opening, life-affirming journey to the final frontier of romance, this is a beautiful book about the possibility of late-in-life love and the life-changing lessons we all can learn from those who have been lucky enough to find it. (Katie Couric)
Eve Pells career as an investigative reporter served her in discovering such couples and learning their stories, which, along with her own love story, she imparts with fluency and zest. Love, Again is a joy to read, full of humor and heart and sweet collective wisdom, a book for all ages. (Susan Trott, author of the Holy Man Trilogy)
    Members Reviews:
For any man and woman, post 60 and now single, this is a must read, unless you prefer poor quality of life in the years ahead.
Eve Pell is not a stranger to me.
I read her "Modern Love" column in the NY Times a few years ago, where she spoke of her meeting a man, so unlike any of the men she had ever experienced in her life, married to or otherwise.

  • It Runs in the Family Audiobook by Frida Berrigan

Title: It Runs in the Family
Subtitle: On Being Raised by Radicals and Growing into Rebellious Motherhood
    Author: Frida Berrigan
    Narrator: Erin Bennett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Parenting is hard. So is being a peacemaker in a violent world. It Runs in the Family is a book about how parents can create lasting and meaningful bulwarks between their kids and the violence endemic in our culture. It posits discipline without spanks or slaps or threats of violence while considering how to raise thoughtful, compassionate, fearless young people committed to social and political change - without scaring, hectoring, or scarring them with all the wrongs in the world.
Frida Berrigan is a mother and stepmother, wife, and daughter. Her parents, Phil Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister, were a former priest and nun who became nationwide icons for their prophetic witness against war and nuclear weapons, which sometimes resulted in long jail sentences. Berrigan grew up in the community they helped found, Jonah House in Baltimore, and becoming a parent herself has forced her to come to terms with her own upbringing in new ways. Expanding on the stories in her popular column for the website Waging Nonviolence, Berrigan has crafted a welcome antidote to the various parenting fads currently on offer from French moms and tiger moms and mean moms. She offers a unique perspective on parenting that derives from hard work, deep reflection, and lots of trial and error.
    Members Reviews:
An honest account of aware parenting
This brief book, essentially a selection of short essays about Berrigan's upbringing as the daughter of the Catholic peace activists Phillip Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister and her own experiences as a mother attempting to raise conscientious children in a violent world, is both moving and identifiable. The author is frank about the challenges of being a member of a sort of royal family of the counterculture and on growing up with parents who were often off at protests or locked in jail, and on finding her own identity and values while honoring those of her parents.
Berrigan's own challenges and choices as a mother will be familiar to any modern parent who does not reject society and popular culture but who also wants to make wise choices: How much television should the kids watch, if any? How do we instill awareness of the sufferings of the world when bombarded with constant messaging pushing materialism? The author's honesty about her own confusion on some of these subjects is quite refreshing.
helpful suggestions, good humor, no finger wagging.
Great stories, important topics, lots of constructive ideas and helpful suggestions, good humor, no finger wagging.
    Inspiration
I'm 76, so at times I thought this book wasn't for me, but ultimately it was a powerful reminder, beautifully written, and a hopeful example of what is possible. If you are the ultimate consumer, or fearful of germs, you will be educated. The Berrigan brothers were an inspiration to my generation, may Frida be an inspiration to hers.

  • Food Confidential Audiobook by Nicole Faires

    Title: Food Confidential
Subtitle: The Corporate Takeover of Food Security and the Family Farm - and What to Do About It
    Author: Nicole Faires
    Narrator: Erin Bennett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-26-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Fight the power and protect your family from the corporate interests that control our food chain. When author and homesteader Nicole Faires decided to retrofit an old school bus and tour America's small farms with her husband and two small children, she expected to learn a lot, be inspired, and have some fun. But what she found disturbed her. Mismanaged small farms; clueless urbanites setting up shop to "get back to the land"; a mindless devotion to organic farming; and, ultimately, the discovery of just how dependent we are on corporations for our food. She began to understand how dangerous and fragile our food system really is. Climate change. Farmers retiring or going out of business. Corporations controlling our food distribution system while being protected from the consequences when they endanger our health. Skyrocketing food prices. Outsourced food production. With this admittedly bleak assessment of the current state of affairs, Nicole and her family decided to abandon the bus trip and instead start a farm. "I couldn't tell people the solutions to our food crisis while I was traipsing around America taking photos. I had to live it," Nicole says. And so the seeds for Food Confidential were sown.
Our basic right to healthy food is at risk. What can we do? Written in an astute, engaging style, armed with examples from her own homesteading lifestyle, small farmer Nicole Faires' Food Confidential gives you the tools to fight the intangible battles as well as the practical ones.
    Members Reviews:
Do you care what you throw in your children's tummies?
I gave this important book five stars because Faires tells it like it is; what has happened to our food, what currently is going on with food production, and the state of things to come. "Food Tyrants, " while not a fluffy summer read, is quite read-able and engaging. The author has done her research but still manages to make a serious issue quite compelling. Fans of Monsanto may not get a kick out of it, but everyone who cares about health and nutrition certainly will. It's a must read, especially for parents. Oh... Plan on growing your own food when you've finished the book.
    Corporate takeover of our food
This book was a most informative read. I learned a lot I did not know about the monopolistic corporations that now control food production globally. At the very least, our food should be labeled if it contains GMO crops. This book is worth a read for anyone that is concerned, or does not know, how our food is now being produced Not a wonder that many countries have forbidden GMO containing foods. If you think our FDA is working in our best interest, you better take a closer look.
    Five Stars
    Great Book!
Perfect guide to food and DIY farming
Interesting book that covers wide range of topics related to current food related issues post-modern society has landed itself into. These complex issues are result of number of factors like industrialization, globalization etc. The author does not simplify these issues by suggesting simple âback to natureâ kind of solution. Though the book lacks rigors of scientific references, it is backed by sincere first hand experiential knowledge of author herself. The side notes on her experience with living in a mobile house to survey many farms in US and Canada is interesting.

    Title: Intangiball
Subtitle: The Subtle Things That Win Baseball Games
    Author: Lonnie Wheeler
    Narrator: Eric Michael Summerer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
Intangiball tracks the progress of the Cincinnati Reds through five years of culture change, beginning with the trades of decorated veterans Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey, Jr. It also draws liberally from such character-conscious clubs as the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays. Author, sportswriter, and eternal fan of the game Lonnie Wheeler systematically identifies the performance-enhancing qualities (PEQs) that together comprise the "communicable competitiveness" that he calls "teamship."
    Critic Reviews:
"A good book for baseball fans who already know, or think they know, about the specific players named." (
    Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
    Defining the Undefinable
Full disclosure: I once co-authored a baseball book with Lonnie Wheeler. But Iâd never have gotten out of it alive without his good humor, grace, lively intelligence, and writerly skill. So I knew who did the real work. Nearly a dozen books later, heâs written âIntangiball: The Subtle Things That Win Baseball Games,â and heâs still using his own aforementioned intangibles.
The book began in Wheelerâs mind in 2008, by the time Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips had arrived in Cincinnati, and he began seeing articles about how the game was evolving toward the difficult-to-define qualities that helped build a team. The message in Cincinnati was that the team needed a culture change, and while it needed the superstar qualities of Votto and Phillips, it also needed their indefinable essences, which might have been even more important than their physical talents.
âThe dayâor the seasonâas it wereâhad been won by the respectful, enthusiastic observance of the so-called little things,â Wheeler wrote. And so began his investigation. He even coined a word for it: âTEAMSHIP.â Early on, he describes the great human moment in baseball history when the Crosley Field organist mocked Dodger great Jackie Robinson by playing, âBye, Bye, Blackbird,â and the fansâand Reds themselvesâjoined in. Then Dodger shortstop Pee Wee Reese walked across the diamond and put his arm around his teammate. It was, says Wheeler, a classic demonstration of letter No. 5 in TEAMSHIPââSâ for âSupport.â
Wheelerâs many scenes and examples range from Robinson and his general manager, Branch Rickey, through the entire modern game. Heâs an expert observer of the Reds, of course, but he also studies the thinking of Joe Maddon, Tampa Bayâs manager; the great St. Louis teams of Gibson, McCarver, Flood, and Cepeda; the dominant Braves of the 1990s; and the Oakland ones of the early 1970s. There are players such as Derek Jeter (whose intangibles prompted a new word: "Jeterate") and Joey Votto (âthe Mountielike manhood of Joey Votto,â he writes), and there are scouts, executives, and managersâall of whom are trying to define the undefinable.
Itâs something of an insiderâs book, separating the casual fan from the real students, and its breadth will make the reader an insider, too. Itâs a smart book, brimming with insight, a roster of baseballâs Whoâs Who, and Wheelerâs down-to-earth knowledge is first-rate and interesting.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In Prophets, Gurus, and Pundits, author Anna M. Young proposes that the difficulty of bridging the gap between intellectuals and the public is not a failure of ideas; rather, it is an issue of rhetorical strategy. By laying a rhetorical foundation and presenting analytical case studies of contemporary "public intellectuals," Young creates a training manual for intellectuals who seek to connect with a public audience and effect change writ large.
Young begins by defining key aspects of rhetorical style before moving on to discuss the specific ways in which intellectuals may present ideas to a general audience in order to tackle large-scale social problems. Next, she defines the ways in which five crucial turning points in our nation - the rise of religious fundamentalism, a growing lack of trust in our institutions, the continued destruction of the environment, the ubiquity of media and information in our daily lives, and the decline of evidence-based reasoning, have set the stage for opportunities in the current public-intellectual dialogue.
Via case studies of such well-known personalities as Deepak Chopra and Professor Cornel West, Young goes on to reveal the types of public intellectuals who achieve success

Design is everywhere. It seduces, pleases and inspires us. It makes us part with our money. It defines who we think we are. An iPhone, an anglepoise lamp, a Picasso, a banknote, an Armani suit, a William Morris textile, a Lucky Strike packet, a spacecraft - every object tells a story. And understanding their stories offers us a whole new way of seeing the world.
