A little American gem

I loved this little gem, a memoir-parable mined from the same American ground as writings by James Baldwin, Arthur Miller, and Sherwood Anderson. Its combination of autobiography and social critique reminded me of "The Fire Next Time"; its moments of group hysteria and persecution summoned "The Crucible"; and its brief portraits of small town "grotesques" would be at home in "Winesburg, Ohio." Greenberg pulls it all off with characteristic insight, pathos, and humor. A touching, thought-provoking read, highly recommended.

I was just getting interested as ND the book finished. What happened did he resign or get it sorted. Telling Mr there is more to the book a nd directing Mr to a website when I paid for the book is not fair. The old addicts if it seems too hood to be true it probably is applies here. Not the first time I've been burnt I should know better. Cheap books end up not being complete books.

Scotland too short...

As much as I enjoyed this well written story, I really feel as if it would have been part of a much larger story...my only disappointment is wrapped up in discover such a well written story and such an engaging author,and being subjected to an abrupt end !...bummer...

Must read for all minorities in law enforcement

Just received the book yesterday. Read it in one day. Very accurate account of what was the situation for the Hispanic Agents at that time. Chapter 18 was about my testimony in court. Thank God it is a different Bureau today than it was over 25 years ago. Keep in mind that every agent that testified in El Paso had to pay the price for doing so when they returned to their offices. But it was worth it.

When Mat Perez arrived in the Los Angeles FBI Office, Special Agent In Charge, Richard Bretzing greeting him by saying: Iâm going to overlook the fact that you are a Mexican.â That statement initiated a series of racial discriminatory actions by Bretzing, and by FBI managers, against Mat. And, it did not stop at Mat. Bretzing and FBI headquarters had already been mistreating its Hispanic Special Agents in Los Angeles and nationally disparately in promotions, assignments, and in transfers to the âTaco Circuitâ.

We all endured the agony of racial prejudice and unequal treatment. But it didn't stop with Hispanic Agents, the vengeful Bretzing ambushed the career of Anglo FBI Agent John Hoos, the Media Representative, by retaliating against John for courageously testifying against him and telling the truth. John was demoted. John represented integrity, and served with honor. If you could not lie to support Bretzing and if your fidelity served the bureau over his, your career was finished.

I was retaliated against when Bretzing confiscated my FBI issued weapon and car and transferred me to the main Los Angeles office, because I had developed a minor medical back problem while listening to Spanish speaking wiretaps. He put me on limited duty assigned to translating Spanish tapes. He did so notwithstanding the fact that my physician and two FBI doctors declared that my condition did not interfere with my work as an FBI Agent.

Depressed Point of View

This was not at all what I was expecting. What a dour, negative and an unhappy take on life. The author assumes too much in her thinking that she represents all women or even a majority of women over the age of 50. I wonder how she slogs herself out of bed in the morning?

In fact, I personally know many inspiring people who enjoy living a full happy life, have started new careers and even changed the course of their lives in "middle age". The author's position that these things never happen to the over fifty set is preposterous. So much of life and living well depends on your attitude, perspective and point of view. Walmsley-Johnson's angle is one I would rather do without.

A Must Read.

A great book on an ever ongoing debate about the racial situation in the US between the Black and the White. I live in the South and this book draw my interest. It is written excellently and it describes what the american nation struggles with for centuries: that Black people are not equal to White people. I came from Germany who actually has a similar confrontation with the Jews even nowadays, but with one main difference: German police officers do not use their guns that often and the killings by German law enforcement officers are kept to a minimum, almost close to zero. There is no such "Stand your ground" attitude that let people simply pull the trigger when they feel offended. This books gives an outstanding insight to the fact that people in the US must change their minds instead of simply letting situations escalate. No one has the right to take the life of another human being and this means, no one. Read the book and get your own reflections. I keep my hope that one day people learn about respecting each other, not just by sending their prayers but by acting in a non-violent way.

This is a wonderful and honestly written book

This is a wonderful and honestly written book. Mr. Heinz was, in the best sense of the term, a hero worshipper who makes us see and admire these people as genuine human beings. One great piece after another, but the very first one is especially unforgettable. I loved this book.
