    Length: 37 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
Note: This is a summary and analysis of the book and not the original book.
In The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, Jeff Hobbs seamlessly weaves the socioeconomic and racial realities of the residents of Newark, New Jersey while highlighting the story of a mother and son, Jackie and Robert Peace. Hobbs' research and intimate writing style provides the listener with an in-depth view of what Jackie endured to give her son a chance at a better life. It also effectively demonstrates how someone like Robert Peace, who is given every chance at a better life, can still make the choices that ultimately leads to his demise. For those who have been blessed, or lucky, to live above poverty, it can be difficult to understand just how difficult it can be to be truly poor. The struggles are not limited strictly to a lack of funds but also to location, education, and family demands, among other things. To provide a greater opportunity for her son, Jackie Peace did her best to overcome each of these limitations. While working, she sought higher education so as to further her career prospects. To pay for private school, she had to work long hours at multiple jobs and in turn was given less time to spend with her son.

This book was mildly informative. While simplistic and lacking impartiality. I would not recommend for anybody other than a child.

    Publisher's Summary:
What happens to someone who can't hear the music in a City of Music? A city where deaf means something is broken and needs to be fixed? Where the home of the great Johnny Cash has never heard of Beethoven's Nightmare? The deaf children in the City of Music are screaming to be heard. The moral behind the Joe Paterno case has not yet been learned from that grim tale. This is not a gripe session, but an awakening to the abuse and neglect of thousands of deaf American children. Americans who shop in our stores, sit in our classrooms, die in our hospitals, and waste away in our prisons. This is a call to arms. This is a story of too many deaf children in America.

    Very informative.
Just finished this book and I am terribly moved by the true stories
Just finished this book and I am terribly moved by the true stories, told at times with humor, at times with frustration and despair, and throughout was unflinchingly candid. It's not always a pretty story but is one that needs to be told. I feel this should be required reading by police forces, court systems, schools, and other public-serving organizations, and would encourage church leaders and the friends, family, and neighbors of the Deaf to read it, as well.
Sorry that a subject like this must be written but hats off to Poppy ...

This book tells story that at times force you to put the book down and walk away. The same stories cause a uneasiness in your spirit as you read the words of real people who we have all likely encountered. This book is insightful, challenging, humorous, and heartbreaking. I believe every person who works with the public should be required to read these true stories of our deaf neighbors.
Wonderful book. Needs to be read by all

Title: A Macat Analysis of William Cronon's Nature's Metropolis
    Author: Cheryl Hudson

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-08-16
    Publisher: Macat International Limited.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
A winner of the 1992 Bancroft Prize, Nature's Metropolis broke new ground in the burgeoning field of environmental history, while also adding weight to both urban and Western history. Before its publication in 1991, historians generally treated urban and rural areas as distinct from one another, each following separate lines of development and maturity. Using Chicago and its surrounding areas as a model, Cronon's book looks to disprove this idea. It shows how the city-country story really exists as a unified narrative. That is, the city was built on the fruits of its natural surroundings, and those surroundings succeed or fail only in relation to the city.
Cronon built his ideas largely on Frederick Jackson Turner's 19th century "frontier thesis," which stressed the effect that taming the wilderness had on the American character. Cronon updates this to argue that capitalist market forces played the major role in changing urban and rural areas together.
While some have criticized Cronon for his apparent disdain for human influence in the city-country story, Nature's Metropolis is still an influential book and is particularly lauded by the historical community.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 46 mins

    Release date: 06-06-16
    Publisher: Macat International Limited.
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
In his 1997 work Theology of Discontent, American Iranian Hamid Dabashi suggests that the Iranian Revolution of 1978-1979 would not have happened had it not been for the influential ideas of eight Iranian Islamic thinkers in the four decades before it occurred.
Dabashi surveys these thinkers' contributions to the development of Iran's system of Islamic beliefs. He says this ideology was shaped both according to Iranians' perception of themselves and according to their perception of the West. A fierce desire to resist control and reject any possible imposition of Western imperialism led to the country's revolutionary spirit against a West-friendly monarchy.
One of Dabashi's arguments - that thinkers who may often oppose each other's views will still come together to ensure their mutual survival - has proved useful outside the context of the Iranian Revolution. It has provided a way of understanding Muslim-Western relations that have seemingly stalled in the post-9/11 world. This has given Theology of Discontent a certain timelessness and has confirmed it as an important work.

This is a summary of Alec Ross' The Industries of the Future
Leading innovation expert Alec Ross explains what's next for the world: the advances and stumbling blocks that will emerge in the next 10 years and how we can navigate them. While Alec Ross was working as senior advisor for innovation to the secretary of state, he traveled to 41 countries, exploring the latest advances coming out of every continent. From start-up hubs in Kenya to R&D labs in South Korea, Ross has seen what the future holds.
In The Industries of the Future, Ross shows us what changes are coming in the next 10 years, highlighting the best opportunities for progress and explaining why countries thrive or sputter. He examines the specific fields that will most shape our economic future, including robotics, cybersecurity, the commercialization of genomics, the next step for big data, and the coming impact of digital technology on money and markets. In each of these realms, Ross addresses the toughest questions: How will we adapt to the changing nature of work? Is the prospect of cyberwar sparking the next arms race? How can the world's rising nations hope to match Silicon Valley in creating their own innovation hotspots? And what can today's parents do to prepare their children for tomorrow?
Ross blends storytelling and economic analysis to give a vivid and informed perspective on how sweeping global trends are affecting the ways we live. Incorporating the insights of leaders ranging from tech moguls to defense experts, The Industries of the Future takes the intimidating, complex topics that many of us know to be important and boils them down into clear, plainspoken language. Publisher's Summary:
If only a large metropolitan area could offer all of the following: a reasonably healthy economy, exceptional public education and high educational attainment, elite music and art, innumerable leisure activities, remarkably affordable housing, strikingly short commute times, some of the safest weather conditions in the country, near universal health care, solid public transportation, a culture of ingenuity, and an overall tradition of acceptance. Believe it or not, such an area exists. The only catch is that popular perception actually makes the area seem undesirable. Rochesternomics provides data-driven insight to overcome popular perception and illustrate why Rochester, New York, is this hidden gem.

Amol Shrikhande was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised outside New Haven, Connecticut. He has spent large chunks of time in Boston, Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri; and New York City. In between trying to raise two children, he and his wife are both practicing physicians.

    could taste the salted air
Great writing but sad story with a victorious ending. related to this story and the emotional toll loss by nature or nurture brings. I could taste the salted air and deep feeling of loss throughout. pure sucess in getting an emotional response from me..
    well-written story from the heart
I loved it. Very honest and real. Thank you for giving me hope. your friend
Great listen and my very first audio book!
Would you consider the audio edition of Naked to be better than the print version?
I enjoyed listening to this book and just recently won a copy from the author, Julie Freed! This was the first book I've listened too and enjoyed it a lot. I get quite sleepy sometimes reading a print version and with this I just sat back and listened.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Besides the protagonist of course, I liked Jim. Jim was there when Julie needed him most. Her family was too, but I like getting to know other characters involved in what was experienced.
What does Julie Freed bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Her own voice, it was so inspiring to know she recorded this herself! She really sat down to tell me her story!
If you could give Naked a new subtitle, what would it be?
    Stripped
Leveled (disasters like hurricanes and divorces have a way of leveling the playing field.)
    I think NAKED was appropriate
    Any additional comments?
Great "listen", try it! Now I'm going to stick with it because I like the flavor of audio when I get lazy and just want to listen. Time for a new book, I have a free one! Thanks for writing NAKED Julie ~
