Organized in keeping with our knowledge of the migration of human groups through history, with statistics and a cultural portrait of each ethnic group, People of the World becomes a fascinating round-the-world tour of customs and traditions, as well as a go-to source for background information to round out one's own family history.
From the Tuvans of Siberia to the Samoans and Tahitians of Polynesia, from the Mapuche of Chile to the Sami of Scandinavia, 222 of the world's 10,000-plus ethnic groups are featured. Some were chosen because of their commonality as ancestors to many; others were chosen because their numbers are dwindling, and soon their cultures may become extinct.

    One world
This is the best edition by far of the three that National Geographic has put out on this topic. Each culture is illustrated with a photo, and there are additional sections on genealogy, genetic groups, group migrations, and ethnic-identity testing. The timely intro reminds us that Earth's billions share an interrelated past...and future.
"...broad, beautifu;;y photographed and documented book..."
Considering the vast number of cultural differences of people in the world, this broad, beautifully photographed and documented book
is full of concise descriptions and to the point analysis of current influences on people and their communities.
    Five Stars
    Love it! Thank you!

Summary of Real Food/Fake Food by Larry Olmsted | Includes Analysis
    Preview:
Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don't Know What You're Eating and What You Can Do About It is an investigative overview of the food industry's often intentional efforts to mislead consumers about the origin and identity of the products that they eat. Author Larry Olmsted highlights the most outrageous examples of food frauds perpetrated upon the American people and offers recommendations for ways that consumers can reclaim their grocery bags and fill their dinner plates with foods they can trust.
Fake foods are ubiquitous, but most Americans fail to realize that they are being duped. While it may seem harmless to consume a type of cheese that is not, in fact, from a specific region in Italy, as often occurs with the consumption of ersatz Parmesan cheese, the implications of this fraud are far-reaching. First, consumers are paying a premium for products that purport to be more luxurious or exclusive.
Please note: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and NOT the original book.

"Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don't Know What You're Eating and What You Can Do About It" is an investigative overview of the food industry's often intentional efforts to mislead consumers about the origin and identity of the products that they eat. Author Larry Olmsted highlights the most outrageous examples of food frauds perpetrated upon the American people and offers recommendations for ways that consumers can reclaim their grocery bags and fill their dinner plates with foods they can trust.
This Instaread summary of "Real Food/Fake Food" extrapolates upon the concept of artificial versus real. It takes the original expose by Olmsted and condenses it into the core elements while also exploring the depths of this message. The 9 key takeaways were on track, helping me better understand what I can do about food fraud. It'sâ saddening that such marketing gimmicks exist, but I'm grateful this summary made me aware of them. I was given a copy of this book to review.
Do you really know what you're eating?
Thanks to often misleading efforts of the food industry, few of us know what weâre really eating when we consume processed or prepackaged foods. Real Food/Fake Food by Larry Olmsted is an investigative overview of the food industryâs efforts to entice us to buy their products, often perpetrating massive frauds on consumers, such as the crabmeat products that are actually made from crayfish, or wasabi thatâs actually green-dyed horseradish. Not only does such practices impact our pocketbooks, but misleading food advertising can have negative health consequences for the unwary or unaware. Summary of Real Food/Fake Food by Larry Olmsted from Instaread is a comprehensive analysis of Olmstedâs book. Short enough to be read in 15 minutes, it gives an excellent overview of the book and enables a reader to decide if itâs worth buying.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Today, a fresh crop of true believers, including brilliant scientists, view death itself as a problem to be solved. Are they fantasizing? What are the prospects and problems and unforeseen side effects of longer life spans?

From nuclear war to ecological disaster to rocks from the sky all the way to luring unfriendly interest from "others" out there, science has shed light on myriad ways to fail. To tumble back down into entropy.
So, want to have some fun listing and weighing all the ways (that we know) the universe could have it in for us? Partly in order to seek ways through the minefield, of course. But also because, well, who doesn't like a scary campfire story about apocalypse now and then?

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-02-16

    Publisher's Summary:
In Essay 63, with characteristic wit and acuity, Don Watson takes us on a journey into the heart of the United States in the year 2016. Plunging into the apparent chaos of the presidential campaign and tracing America's recent past, he puts Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders in a larger frame. He considers the irresistible pull - for Americans - of American exceptionalism, and asks whether this creed is reaching its limit.
He explores alternative paths the United States could have taken, and asks where its present course might lead Australia as a dutiful ally.

    Shadow president to be
As always a wonderful and insightful essay by Don Watson, written during the US election campaign. An interesting look at Wisconsin, both progressive and ultra conservative, an analysis of Clinton and Sanders, how they differed and rejoined. My only disappointment was the small amount of commentary on Trump himself. He was like a ghost or the elephant in the room, but somehow it felt as if Don Watson did not believe he could win and therefore didn't spend too much time on him. I would have liked a post election conclusion to the essay.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1984, a Michigan man named Donald Magett won the big one the Michigan Lottery's $1,000 Cash for Life scratch off game. He was 41 or 42 years old at the time, and while the monthly prize (paid in $12,000 annual chunks) wasn't quite "quit your job" money, it certainly sounded like he was on his way to financial security. Alas, that was not the case. In 2005, the U.S. Department of Labor sued Magett, claiming that his company, under his lead, had misused more than half a million dollars of other people's retirement plan assets. Magett was convicted costing him just about everything and served some jail time. In 2005, he declared bankruptcy.

    Title: Voltaire's Wager
    Author: Dan Lewis
    Narrator: Mark Schectman
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-18-16
    Publisher: Now I Know
    Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences
    Publisher's Summary:
François-Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire, was a French writer during the Enlightenment. Known for what would today be considered snark, he often made comments to which many would take offense. For example, in his 1764 treatise Dictionnaire Philosophique (which translates as Philosophical Dictionary), Voltaire quipped that "common sense is not so common." This smarter-than-thou attitude was a theme throughout his works, and, one would expect, his life as well. For example, if Voltaire were around today, he'd be one of those people who didn't buy a ticket to the billion-dollar Powerball drawing, as the lottery is a sucker's bet. Instead, you'd expect him to be the guy who tweeted out that he didn't lose because he didn't play, and instead has $4 more than you do.
