Darling books

Full of virtues and morals and wonderful lessons for young people. A great series of books to read from nightly.

Good book for third or fourth graders

U can read a chapter of this book to your class on an afternoon after they're caught up on their work as a reward and they'll be learning about wildlife even while they giggle. It's also a good book for a child to read to a parent at night or alone and fun for an adult to zip through too.

Kids loved it!

Very sweet, well-written, and lots of good adventures. Loved by all the kids from ages 4 - 10 years old.

Sweet

My boys, still with innocent minds, really enjoyed having this book read to them before bedtime. HOWEVER, keep in mind that it is written in old language, so some of the verbage you may struggle reading aloud. Some of the characters names are "Tommy Tit" and "Black Pussy". The little forest critters get into some "queer" predicaments, sometimes too. Personally, I just changed the script when I saw it coming, and my boys never knew.

They are wonderful for young readers

No one could write light Mr. Burgess for a child that is an animal lover these books will get them to read. Very well told stories from the point of the animal about life in the wild.

A Few Questions

Why was the man gone for so long? Stick dog's friends seen to disagree with him a lot. And the one who starts it is Stripes. Is Stripes now against Stick dog? Why didn't the man start investigating when Karen drank his coffie? And maybe stick dog could have said "Yes, he did show his superiority to squirrels... He let it go."

Listened in the car with a 5 and 9 year old. The story started off with some promise - early laughs as the characters were introduced, and the voices were fun. But all too quickly we found ourselves frustrated by the painfully drawn-out storytelling. Every minor event in the short storyline is described repetitively with a tedious and unnecessary level of detail.

I got several of these stage 1 books for my almost 6 year old kindergartener. He knows some of the words but is still learning as he is new to reading. I think these will be good for him over the next year as he really gets into reading and vocabulary more.

Bought as a gift and arrived damaged otherwise good book

The Giraffe who was afraid of heights

This book was a fun and creative story. I enjoyed it especially because I love giraffes and I am afraid of heights. I think this will have a positive effect on children with hard to get over their fears.

great for children and adults!

Accepting the fact that everyone can be afraid sometimes and that we can overcome our fears are two great life lessons to learn. The illustrations and pacing were wonderful!

Entertaining and educational

First of all, the illustrations by Cathy Morrison are simply charming. Realistic critters and yet captivatingly fun to look at and filled with character.

And then Marianne Berkes sets forth with her retelling of the old tried and true Aesop's Fable of the Tortoise's and the Hare's Race. Of course, we all know that the fast and furious pace of Henry Hare doesn't get the winning results in the end. It is the slow, methodical plodding of the Tortoise that wins the day.

But the story in this cute book is not simply that of which critter will get to the finish line. The story involves understanding measuring distance and talking about it in different terms - yards in a mile, feet in a mile. But story also teaches the lessons of not playing around, not sleeping on the job, and being steadfast. Lots of fun and educational opportunities in this fun book.

I just love the "For Creative Minds Pages" that Arbordale puts at the back of these books. They aid teachers and parents in directing the children's minds for further knowledge. Taking them beyond the fun story and pictures to critical thinking and discovering of new ideas.

âTortoise and Hareâs Amazing Raceâ by Marianne Berkes is another winner. This tale is a modern retelling of the old fable âThe Tortoise and the Hareâ attributed to Aesop. In both versions, Hare boasts that he is the fastest runner and Tortoise, annoyed by the constant bragging, agrees to race with Hare. Marianne takes a familiar theme and creates a blue ribbon version which incorporates mathematical terms and encourages the reader to look beyond the story and engage in learning activities. The illustrations are superb. The animals are realistic, yet have humanistic expressions. Cathy Morrison, the illustrator, creates a beautiful woodsy environment with much attention to detail. It is great fun to read an assortment of retellings and there are so many standards that can be addressed with this book. Thanks again, Marianne for a first place version of âThe Tortoise and the Hare.â

Another award winning book for Marianne. Love all the clever uses of measurement here! It also takes a age-old tale and adds some modern elements (GPS and Cell phone) to help pull in the modern learner. There are loads of opportunities to learn about measurement for a wide range of grade levels. The back, as always, is loaded with activities. I think it is a great idea to read the "original" fable and then this one!
