Length: 10 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-02-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Teens, Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
A sensational young adult science fiction debut from an exciting new British author.
Jarra is stuck on Earth while the rest of humanity portals around the universe. But can she prove to the norms that she's more than just an Earth Girl?
2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. While everyone else portals between worlds, 18-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, she has been abandoned by her parents. She can't travel to other worlds, but she can watch their vids, and she knows all the jokes they make. She's an 'ape', a 'throwback', but this is one ape girl who won't give in.
Jarra invents a fake background for herself - as a normal child of Military parents - and joins a class of norms that is on Earth to excavate the ruins of the old cities. When an ancient skyscraper collapses, burying another research team, Jarra's role in their rescue puts her in the spotlight. No hiding at back of class now. To make life more complicated, she finds herself falling in love with one of her classmates - a norm from another planet. Somehow, she has to keep the deception going.
A freak solar storm strikes the atmosphere, and the class is ordered to portal off-world for safety - no problem for a real child of military parents but fatal for Jarra. The storm is so bad that the crews of the orbiting solar arrays have to escape to planet below: the first landing from space in 600 years. And one is on collision course with their shelter.
    Critic Reviews:
"With a dash of action, sprinkling of romance, some teenage angst and a couple of collapsing skyscrapers, this novel contains everything you could possibly want to grab a teenage reader and keep them utterly enthralled." (Starburst Magazine)
"A break from the norms." (SFX magazine)

Amazing "new" author, at least for me.
This author reminds me of Anne McCaffrey, at least from her SciFi books.
SciFi authors (a lot of the time) tend to have a problem with character development. This author's character development is incredible. The plots truly reminded me of McCaffrey's scifi books that I loved (Freedom, Pegasus and Doona series specifically)
Both the primary and auxiliary characters have a depth that you rarely see in scifi.
The story starts with a predictable premise (rite of passage into adulthood), and then follows the character as she becomes the catalyst of many events. Nothing in the story arc is forced or un-realistic in context of the universe described.
I am disappointed that there are only about 4 more books from this author that i haven't read. Don't know how fast she writes, but want it to be faster!
Some of the best sci-fi young adult I've read!
Earth Girl wasnât just an amazing read, it was completely engrossing. Within a few short pages I was so captured by the unique premise, world building and spunky character Jarra that I couldnât bring myself to put it down until I was finished.
Lately Iâve read a fair number of sci-fi young adult books and this one out-shines the rest. I am not kidding when I say I even teared up while reading it. I have a seriously soft spot for certain things when it comes to anything military, traditions and ceremonies.
    Singing its praises:
    - The main character Jarra! She has some issues but ones I think everyone can sympathize with.

    THAT CLIFFHANGER!!!
"It's always the same isn't it? Here they were, halfway around the world, and yet everyone was stuck in their little loops - engaging in the old tired flirtations, doomed to the same disappointments."
THAT CLIFFHANGER!!! How am I supposed to wait until the third book is released, REALLY?!!
Everyone's lives are filled with drama, everyone's got a secret, and everyone's blackmailing someone AND I LOVE IT! I find myself craving to learn what the next big thing is that will send everyone spiraling out of control. There is a lot of aftermath from Book 1 but I found that Katharine did a great job creating new character dynamic with the same setting. I have found that I have looked differently at several characters, some I still hate and but new ones I've grown to like.
    Quick read - very interesting.
Good book - I read the first one earlier this year within days & was totally caught off guard when I realized it was a series! I bought this second one right when it was released & the characters did not disappoint. Futuristic & intriguing.
    What A Cliffhanger
This book was a smooth read. I caught myself constantly saying just one more chapter. The drama and rapid twist turn of events sucks you in. It also gives so much perspective, you find yourself rooting for characters you donât necessarily like.

Gifted Author I could not put this book down
I met this young author named on a PLL page He writes young adult and I'm going to add "adults of any age" paranormal, romance, suspense stories. I am 55 married. 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren. We Have Pretty Little Liars in common. It came up in conversation that he was an author. I found his books on Amazon and purchased my 1st book, and it was so good I read it in one night. I will tell you after writing 5 published books in 3 years, he hits on some topics that most seasoned authors don't discuss. He is a gifted writer and you can and will feel the emotion in his stories. 2 of his books are available for free on Amazon. . You have nothing to lose except maybe some sleep when you can't put the book down. Give him a try. If you read his books, please leave a review for him. Thanks. I guarantee you will no be able to put the book down.
    Team Kadin!
Forbidden Darkness is the first book in the young adult series The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles by Alec John Belle. What a great beginning! I started reading it and by the third chapter I was obsessed with finishing it. I had so many questions and couldn't put it down. Many of my questions were answered, and just when I thought I knew where the story was going, he threw in some major twists that had me freaking out. I love when an author can catch me off guard and make the story more exciting than I had imagined it would be.
I have to admit I am 100% TEAM KADIN! He is an absolutely hot bad boy and he did quite a few nasty things in the story, but in my heart I feel there is more to him than we have beew shown so far. I could be completely wrong, so I will be continuing the series to find out if I am right. Alec John Belle has me totally hooked!
A great beginning to what I am sure will be an amazing series!!
    Enjoyable Monstery Snack
With the author being only 17, I was not sure what to expect from this when I cracked it open the other night. But after having read The Duff, which was written by a 19 year old, Iâm starting to ignore age.
    Iâm glad I did.
While it is a quick read (only taking an evening to complete), I have to say I was completely engaged with it the entire night.

The hairy beast growled and lunged at Baylee, his rusted logging chain straining to break - like it did every morning she cut down his back alley.
She hadn't dubbed him The Wrath of Dog for nothin'.
She's vowed that someday she'll free Wrath and they'll rise up and smite his obviously nasty owner. For today, though, she just needs to get past him without dying and make it the two blocks to class before the bell rings and she has another detention headed her way.
Wrath's plight is soon forgotten when her refusal to dissect a kitty earns her another trip to Principal Baird's office. Things go from bad to worse, and before long she's hearing voices in her head, decamping the school premises with a band of zombie cats, and learning that The Wrath of Dog is a lot more than she bargained for.
Next thing she knows, she's avoiding her best friend, learning she's not quite human, and taking on an unseen enemy to save the day, her family, and just maybe two worlds in the process.
Becoming an adult sure isn't what she thought it would be...

    Fast and funny
This book is told in the first person and I enjoyed the character's way of expressing herself. She is ironic, funny, and warm. The plot is unusual: the standard YA elements mixed with an animal rights theme. It's a fast read, a fun ride, and I think that both teens and adults looking for some entertainment will enjoy this book.
Loved it, waiting for the next one!
This is not typically my genre but the description piqued my curiosity. I was not disappointed, and maybe I do have to give the Twilight series a shot. Once the ground work was set the story hit the ground running. I like to think I can predict what happens next, but not with this story. Better yet I had to keep reading to know! I take forever to finish a book and finished this in 3 days. It is smart and funny and if you choose to reflect on the symbolism, a book with a lot of heart. I loved it and am looking forward to the next one.
Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys young adult paranormal
I bought this book as a gift, but ended up reading it myself first, and enjoyed it very much! It combined some fantasy elements with shapeshifter and even some animal rights kinda issues, which I enjoy. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys young adult paranormal or similar kinds of books.

'Do you wish to be wakened for the time we shall spend in each of the three star systems, sir? You can, of course, be given enough drug to keep you in cold-sleep until we reach your destination.' Bart felt tempted - he wanted very much to see the other star systems. But he couldn't risk meeting other passengers."

Old classic that still is quite well done and worth the read.
The Color of Space by Marion Zimmer Bradley
This is one of the first Science Fiction Novels I read so long ago. It's always been a favorite and possibly one that I've read over a half dozen times. It still stands the test of time despite some little quirks that most often come with classics that might not have predicted cell phones and PCs and the Internet.
It starts out with this line :
The Lhari spaceport didn't belong on Earth.
Bradley, Marion Zimmer. The Colors of Space (Kindle Location 19).
Bart Steele, the main character, has a prejudice against the alien race Lhari. It is deep seated; such that though the Lhari have given mankind the stars he feels that their presence on Earth is an overwhelming reminder that they withhold the technology that would give humans more freedom to roam and profit better in space. The Human Race has colonies out in space but their space efforts are limited to within the short distance that their ships might travel within each system. Any travel or trade involving warp-drive require Lhari ships. Humans have been told that they would not survive such flight without being placed in suspension for the voyage.
One set of humans, the Mentorians, help crew Lhari ships though they too are suspended during warp-drive flights. They add another level of prejudice that many have because some believe Mentorians have given up a lot of their loyalty to be able to work on Lhari ships. Bart does not have so much prejudice to Mentorians because his mother was a Mentorian and Bart can speak the Lhari language. (Mentorians seem to have a higher tolerance for brighter sunlight which is helpful since the Lhari are used to very bright light.) Lhari don't see color's and have found using Mentorians ability to help them identify colors has been helpful. This might be one of those quirky pieces that is a bit thin in the plot and unfortunately the story hinges on this (hence the title). (Even though they don't identify colors they likely have a wider variety of shades of black and white--if that's what they see--and they have made it into space with warp-drive; so it becomes questionable if they would see that much value in the Mentorian ability to discern color; though it does show a demonstration of trust in that branch of the human race.)
In the beginning of the story, Bart is sending a friend off into space while he also is at the port to meet his father who is coming in from Vega. The Lhari are awaiting the arrival of a possible criminal.

To me that is always a good sign of a great novel
This book pulls you in by the end of the 1st chapter. To me that is always a good sign of a great novel. It offers that eerie suspense feeling that lures the reader in and makes you want to know what will happen next. I loved this book the attention to detail and Character's were very well written. This book will not disappoint cant wait for the sequel.
Fun, engrossing, surprising YA ghost-story that intrigued me (and scared me a bit) keeping me up late turning pages!
I really, really enjoyed this book (I usually save 5 stars for books that change my life in some way--so I'm going with 4.5). I didn't quite know what to expect because I read and enjoyed an earlier work by the author that was historical fiction for adults. This was part mystery, part ghost-story, and part romance. I went through it very quickly. It took me a few days though because the ghost-story part was so well done I got a little creeped out at night and had to wait for time during the day to read when it was nice and light! The author wove a wonderful plot and did a great job bringing the creepy, beautiful, complex house to life. She also did a great job going back and forth from the modern to the historical. There is also some lovely, very evocative writing. The book ends the immediate arc but promises a sequel. I, for one, will be waiting eagerly!
It was great to read one as refreshing as this
Okay, so you might not know this about me, but I am OBSESSED with steampunk! I read a lot of steampunk novels, and Iâve noticed that sometimes they are getting stale. It was great to read one as refreshing as this.
Everything about this book was cool. I loved the idea of the house. Everything about this book is imaginative! I read it in just two sittings. It was addictive and I canât wait for book 2. Really, my favorite part about this novel (YA by the way), is the eerie feeling that follows you throughout the chapters. Even though it isnât technically a Halloween story, it is perfect for this season.
    The Right Amount of Scare
I've always enjoyed a ghost story with a decent scare, but not too much. This book had the right amount. While it's clean and isn't overly dark, author Susan Dayley doesn't tip-toe around the scary stuff either. It reads realistically and believably and the mysteries keep you going until you aren't sure what's going to happen next. I was actually a little worried about Parker's safety at times.
