Joan Seabrook, a fledgling archaeologist, has fulfilled a lifelong dream to visit Arabia by travelling from England to the ancient city of Muscat with her fiancé, Rory.
Desperate to escape the pain of a personal tragedy, she longs to explore the desert fort of Jabrin and unearth the treasures it is said to conceal. But Oman is a land lost in time - hard, secretive and in the midst of a violent upheaval - and gaining permission to explore Jabrin could prove impossible.
Joan's disappointment is alleviated only by the thrill of meeting her childhood heroine, pioneering explorer Maude Vickery, and hearing firsthand the stories that captured her imagination and fuelled her ambition as a child.
Joan's encounter with the extraordinary and reclusive Maude will change everything. Both women have things that they want and secrets they must keep. As their friendship grows, Joan is seduced by Maude's stories and the thrill of the adventure they hold, and only too late does she begin to question her actions - actions that will spark a wild and potentially disastrous chain of events.
Will the girl who left England for this beautiful but dangerous land ever find her way back?

    Great story
At first, thought I'd made a mistake and that it was a humdrum chick lit; I was wrong. Great story and very compelling. Recommend.

    Publisher's Summary:
A two-time winner of Australia's prestigious The Age Book of the Year Award, Joan London's debut novel, Gilgamesh, was published to rapturous acclaim both in her native Australia and in the United States. Now, London has delivered The Good Parents, a tender and compelling tale of mother love and the harrowing moment when a daughter spreads her wings and vanishes from her parents' orbit.
Maya de Jong is an 18-year-old country girl who moves to Melbourne and begins an affair with her new boss. When Maya's parents, Toni and Jacob, arrive for a visit, Maya is gone - no one knows where. Maya, for reasons of her own, leaves haunting clues in late-night calls to her brother at home, carefully avoiding detection by the two people who love her most. Ultimately, to find her daughter, Toni will have to revisit a part of her past that she thought she had shut off forever - the closest she ever came to being a lost girl herself.
The Good Parents is at once utterly contemporary and a story as old as humanity itself: a stunning portrait of familial love and how far we can drift apart in the moments between the words we speak.

I found this book to be drawn out and a tiny bit tedious. I enjoy Joan London's writing but there was something about the plot which troubled me. I think it was the premise that this 18 year old girl would simply invite her parents to stay at her Melbourne flat then disappear with a man who had been clearly using her. The infatuation she seemed to have for her devious boss felt somewhat forced and unbelievable to me, paralleling of course, her own mother's experience with a similar sort of older man, Cy.
Cy turns out to be quite useful in the end, but it's an end which is too long-winded in arriving. I even found myself skipping a few pages, something I wouldn't usually do if I'm enjoying a novel.
    The Mistakes of Youth
Eighteen-year-old Maya de Jong moves from a small town in Western Australia to the big city, Melbourne. Soon she is in an inappropriate relationship with her boss. And when her parents come to visit her some months later, she has already left town with him. The rest of the book focuses on the parents' attempts to find her and to come to terms with the implications of her disappearance.
Most of the book is told in flashbacks. As their despair pulls them further and further apart, the two parents, Toni and Jacob, each find themselves looking back at their own younger days. They too have had to stumble back from roads that lead nowhere, finding each other in the fringes of the hippie movement, and rebuilding lives of approximate normality. Maya's actions, it seems, are part of a pattern -- but patterns can also be broken. The parents' search for their missing daughter becomes part of a larger quest to understand themselves and their need for one another and those around them.
This is a cleverly constructed book. Almost all the encounters in it, whether in the past or the present, seem designed as a gloss on the whole: different family relationships, whether warm or distant; different views of friendship, sex, and love; and different ways in which men can connect to women, from controlling them to calling on their pity. Though a diffuse book in many respects, this is essentially a novel about connections.

    Title: Throwback Special
    Author: Chris Bachelder
    Narrator: R. C. Bray
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-14-16
Publisher: HighBridge, a Division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 47 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Throwback Special is the story of 22 ordinary guys who gather each fall to reenact what ESPN has called "the most shocking play in NFL history": the November 1985 play in which Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins had his leg horribly broken by Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. (The play was known by the Redskins as "the Throwback Special".) Over the course of a weekend, we follow the men as they choose roles; spend a long night of the soul revealing their secret hopes, fears, and passions as they prepare for the game; and finally enact their strange and yet oh, so American ritual for what may be the last time.
With his trademark "microfine sense of humor and tragic sense of history" (Michael Chabon), Chris Bachelder fills his moving and very funny tale with pitch-perfect observations about manhood, marriage, and middle age.
    Critic Reviews:
"What a brilliant book." (Kevin Wilson, author of The Family Fang)
"A comic meditation about marriage, ritual, friendship, parenthood, aging, and unlikely obsessions. This is a funny, insightful, and surprisingly poignant book." (Julie Schumacher, best-selling author of Dear Committee Members)
"A hilarious literary novel about our least hilarious - and least literary - national pastime. No one who reads it will ever be able to think about football, Joe Theismann, Lawrence Taylor, or indeed the male psyche in quite the same way again." (Tom Bissell, author of Extra Lives)

    Me defraudó.

    I Wanted More
The description of this book sounded so promising, I couldn't wait to read it. I downloaded a pre-release copy from the Kindle Unlimited program, and eagerly started reading.
Since the premise of the book is outlined pretty well in the description, I'll be brief with that part.... Basically, Marta is a young woman with a privileged upbringing. The mother who raised her, died and left Marta everything. Marta has no qualms about financially cutting off her father, Pedro, and his new wife, Gaby (who Marta sees as a gold digger). She needs to find a way to get on with her life.
From the start, I became engrossed in the characters, especially Marta. I stayed engrossed through about half the book, because I initially felt that the book was going somewhere.
The title and description indicate that Marta makes some progress as a human being, but I did not see any lasting evidence of that. She does show a few signs of growth here and there, but then she quickly finds her way back to messed-up-Marta.
Several of the characters have issues actually.... some floundered around doing what was expected of them outwardly (at least while in public), and never really addressed anything internally. Marta was the exception to this, she 'usually' did not control her behavior for the benefit of anyone. That being said, at least there were a couple of characters that sort of had their crap together. I respected them and that gave a bit more balance to what would have otherwise been a pretty one dimensional story. Back to Marta though, I definitely expected to see more progression.
The book jumps back and forth a lot, both in time, and between the characters and their situations. Although I found this disconcerting at first, I got used to the strange pace and was able to follow along easily (as there aren't really that many characters). One thing to take note of, is that Marta's mother is named 'Marti'. So when the book goes back and forth, paying attention to this distinction will keep you from saying, "wait, what"?
Throughout the book, I started piecing it together chronologically, to imagine how it would've read if written that way. I think it was a good move for the author to write it as she did (starting with the main character, Marta). If it had been written chronologically, I think I may have lost interest early on. For example, during one of the jumps backward, there were certain details that I felt were overwritten, and did not add to the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Most people would have said that Sally McPhearson had it all. Sally was a wealthy and powerful woman. Being the CEO of a major Canadian corporation, most of Sally's business acquaintances liked her, but almost all feared her. She carried a dark secret that she had managed to hide from everyone, perhaps even herself. Sally's career had become her whole life, and she didn't even realize it was because of her painful past.
A corporate jet, or even her own private jet, would have been within easy reach for her. However, Sally McPhearson always flew commercial; it was sort of her trademark. When she boarded the small commuter plane that day to travel to a business meeting in Toronto, she had no idea that her life was about to abruptly change. Sally was about to depart on a journey that would result in months full of pain, suffering, hunger, desperation, and fear. She certainly would have not been able to comprehend that the experiences she was about to endure would forever change her life for the better.
This book tells the story of plane crash survivors in the stark winter wilderness of Northern Ontario, Canada. Against overwhelming odds, they struggle to overcome their adversities and hardships with a little help from a friend.
    Members Reviews:
    Well worth it.
Not what I expected. A very good story. The narration almost put me off but as the book went on the story overcame any negatives. This book entertained me and usually this is all that matters.
Seeing God's Provision In a Crisis
What did you love best about Survival at Starvation Lake?
I liked a lot of things. I liked that the crash and survival scenes and skills were very realistic. I liked that Christian faith was woven skillfully and accurately throughout the story without being preachy. I liked that the characters were well written and that the dialogue was true-to-life. I liked the music at the beginning of each chapter.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The wheel chair salesman with the coin is a very interesting character with an inspiring story. He was my favorite.
Which character as performed by Adam Zens was your favorite?
Susan LeForest Smith, trapper and single mother, is a good strong female character. Her faith is inspiring as are her actions.
Who was the most memorable character of Survival at Starvation Lake and why?
Paul is a gruff guy with a good heart and strong faith. Adam Zens performs this character to a T.
    Any additional comments?
This is a great book that discusses evolution and abortion from a Christian worldview. This book is very clean. I highly recommend it.
    Uplifting story. Bad narration.
intriguing story. The narrator was very hard to listen to. He was over-pronouncing the words. He spoke very slowly. Therefore, the narration dragged. The story was very inspirational. I enjoyed the storyline, especially the Christian aspect.
    Survival at Starvation Lake
    Any additional comments?
"This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast."
The characters, who come from very different backgrounds, find themselves having to rely on each other for their survival following a plane
crash. The female character is portrayed as almost helpless and dependent on male character. Female is CEO of a company, but male character acts
    like she is stupid.

Dutiful Daughter, Wounded Warrior, Big Wide World
A tender story of a thirty-five year old woman, testing her limits, after a life, well lived, yet safely so, as a partner in her father's financial firm . . . having lost her mother at the age of four, Missy had stuck close to her bigger-than-life father, always choosing security over out-and-out joy, for fear of losing it . . . never being a risk taker . . . her one true love was in high school, Joe Santelli . . . and since then, she's played it safe in relationships, too, staying single all these years . . . yet, sometimes late at night, she still dreams, of Joe, of flying off to Italy . . . of helping others . . . once she even boarded the airplane, only to be led off again because of her fear of flying . . . and now, faced with her father's Alzheimer's . . . and more unexpected changes, Missy's world isn't as stable as it once was . . . her "sure thing" boyfriend, Lucas, who quotes the tax tables at dinner doesn't really "do it" for her . . . but at 35, she doesn't have too many chances left . . . she's "friends" with Joe on facebook . . . but she never posts anything . . . just looks at the pics of his three beautiful kids . . . and thinks about his wonderful life . . . and Joe . . . he's going through his own private hell . . . raising three kids alone, after two tours in Afghanistan and losing a limb, and waiting for his divorce to be finalized . . . while his wife globe trots with her rich clients . . . this is a multi-layered story of young love and two adults re-united with an appreciation and renewed love for one another and what they once had . . . and still have . . . a history . . . and a future. Its a story of hope beyond the horrors of war, beyond a childhood of loss, beyond teenage years of "being different", beyond our own small world of selfishness, and beyond the torture of one's own fears. There are a few times in the story that I would have wished for a little more permanence, a little more faith, and a lot more future . . . but all in all, this is a wonderful story . . . of life.
    Great read!
I recommend this book five different ways.

    The "Vocal Fry" Ruined It
I really enjoyed the synopsis. But I could not finish this book. i really tried . the narrator's Vocal Fry (it's a real term. Look it up) grinded on my ears and my nerves. She purref and growled thru the entire book. I didnt get past tge discovery of the daughter before I threw in the towel. i love stores with dogs in them. But I just can't.
    Decent book
This book was entertaining enough to finish but the main character is annoying and whines too much. The narrator has an odd voice, making the whining main character more annoying.
    Just don't waste your money.
    Where do I begin?
This is absolutely the worst narrated book I've ever tried to listen to. The enounciation of the words where so poorly said that the story made it impossible to follow. Please save your money and buy something more worthy. Like a hair bow. Compared to this book, gender is of no consequence.
    Loved this book!
I bought it on a whim and was not happy when I started reading it. The main character was so vain and shallow. By the end of the book I really liked this character. The story ended up being a great story of mixed families with quite a twist.
    Loved It
Im new to this type of read. I never thought I would enjoy this type of book. I thought it was excellent.

    Superb action/military thriller!!
Self published author and former US Marine C.G. Cooper packs a lot of action into less than 6 hour in Moral Imperative. The novel is set months into the future in Iraq, Washington DC, and Charlottesvlile Virginia as the US and our allies take on ISIS in the most determined way ever. This is a high quality novel with great narration. C.G. Cooper is one of many self published authors writing excellent novels.
