    Critic Reviews:
"This accomplished, intelligent debut should come with a warning - it's completely addictive. A nail-biting, sleep-depriving, brilliant read." (Saskia Sarginson, author of The Twins)
"Every parent's nightmare, handled with intelligence and sensitivity, the novel is also deceptively clever. I found myself racing through to find out what happened." (Rosamund Lupton, author of Sister and Afterwards)
"Tightly focussed and fast-paced. You won't rest until you really know what happened." (Lisa Ballantyne, author of The Guilty One)
"Deft, tense and utterly gripping, Burnt Paper Sky stays with you long after the final page has been turned." (Tim Weaver)
"What an exciting debut! Burnt Paper Sky kept me up until the small hours, from the nightmarish moment when a mother first realises that her son has disappeared, to the dramatic denouement. Gilly Macmillan's voice is innovative and confident, and she creates a cast of very human characters. There's a page-turning urgency, combined with an insightful exploration of the emotional fall-out after the abduction of a small child. Meanwhile the media and internet community are shadowy figures whose pitiless speculation and harassment seem all too believable. Burnt Paper Sky is written with passion and insight. Bravo, Gilly Macmillan." (Charity Norman, author of After the Fall)
"What an amazing, gripping, beautifully written debut. Burnt Paper Sky kept me up late into the night (and scared the life out of me)." (Liane Moriarty, author of The Husband's Secret)

    Brilliant
    No Spoilers.
Starts a little slowly but delivers mysteries with a surprising punch, from one suspect to the next I was captivated. After hundreds of mysteries and thrillers I have found it easy to pick the culprit/s not this time This is the first book I've read by this author, Congratulations. ... I really enjoyed it.
Worth noting is thel incite into characters and their impressive growth through the events unfolding.
I'm off to buy the next.....I have confidence it will be a cracker just like this was.
Now hurry and buy this excellent listen immediately.

(I usually only review when a book is excellent and must be praised, or is dreadful, and feel others will appreciate the warning not to spend their hard earned money on a waste if time.)
    Barely interesting!
    Any additional comments?
The writing just clunked along. It may be interesting to discover the culprit at the end, but to get there we must go through many, many hours of a repetitive, predicable account of 'child goes missing, parents upset, Police search, nasty comments on social media'. For me, its not worth a credit. Returned.
excellent story line, well read, highly recommend
After a slow start I found the story totally drew me in an d I could not stop listening to the story. Very cleverly interwoven and explored from the different aspects of the different people involved.

    Compelling, but not as good...
as his later work. It has elements of later masterpieces like Norwegian Wood, but it is still more a beginning effort.

  • Walking to Hollywood Audiobook by Will Self

    Title: Walking to Hollywood
    Author: Will Self
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-06-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most remarkably inventive voices of his generation, author Will Self delivers a new and stunning work of fiction. In Walking to Hollywood, a British writer named Will Self goes on a quest through LA freeways and eroding English cliffs, skewering celebrity as he attempts to solve a crime: who killed the movies.
When Will reconnects with his childhood friend, the world suddenly seems disproportionate. Sherman Oaks, scarcely three feet tall at 45, and his ironically sized sculptures - replicas of his body varying from the gargantuan to the miniscule - spark in Will a flurry of obsessive-compulsive thoughts and a nagging desire to experience the world by foot. Ignoring his therapist and nemesis Zack Busner, Self travels to Hollywood on a mission to discover who - or what - killed the movies. Convinced that everyone from his agent to his friends and bums on the street are portrayed by famous actors, Self goes undercover into the dangerous world of celebrity culture. He circumambulates the metropolitan area in hallucinating and wild episodes, eventually arriving on the English cliffs of East Yorkshire, where he comes face to face with one of Jonathan Swift's immortal Struldbruggs.
A satirical novel of otherworldly proportion and literary brilliance, Walking to Hollywood is a fantastical and unforgettable trip through the unreality of our culture.

Jenny loves to house-sit, looking after a stranger's enviably perfect home and pretending to be someone else - just for a bit.
Her latest booking is a beautiful, disheveled old rectory in the Home Counties owned by the uber-successful Lewis family. Freed of teaching duties for the summer, and her own teenagers spending time with her objectionable ex, Jenny readies herself for a life of walk-in larders and sparkling water taps.
Battling to control the riotous family dog and stay cool in an unrelenting heat wave, she discovers skeletons in the Lewis closet that further threaten to disrupt her idyll. Members Reviews:
Couldn't get past narrator's voice. Story just OK
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, I would warn friends to stay away. Silly, harmless story, not very well written. Narrator's voice (well, all of the voices as she affected some accents) and manner of reading was irritating. Too ponderous for a silly story. Don't bother!
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Utterly predictable. Made me mad at myself for hanging in there so long.
What didnt you like about Julia Franklins performance?
Ponderous delivery. Irritating tone of voice, arch and strangely full of air. Poor attempt to render voices of male characters, American accent, Scottish accent, etc. Would have been better if she did not try.
Did The Woman Who Fell in Love for a Week inspire you to do anything?
Yes, I was inspired to return it and never read anything by this author or listen to anything else by this dreadful reader.
    Any additional comments?
I had always thought I would like this author. Now i will never read anything else of hers. Next one I will choose more carefully.
    Fiona Walker at her best!
I loved this book. It takes me back to reading some of Fiona's earlier works.
It might seem a bit slow to start but bear with it and get to know the characters.
Returning this 1/3 of the way through
What would have made The Woman Who Fell in Love for a Week better?
If the main character wasn't a blithering idiot
Has The Woman Who Fell in Love for a Week put you off other books in this genre?
    no
Which character as performed by Julia Franklin was your favourite?
    Gunther
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Woman Who Fell in Love for a Week?
    most of them
    Any additional comments?
I actually couldn't finish this as the main character was SO stupid, it was practically painful.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Ruby Clare's father was alive, they toiled together happily on their dairy farm in Northern Ireland. Since his death Ruby - thirty-three, plump but comely - has been forced indoors and made a domestic drudge for Martha, her endlessly critical mother, and her prettier younger sisters, May and June.
But everything changes when Ruby finds her late grandmother's old case in the attic. Among its strange contents: a curious, handmade volume called The Book of Light.
As Ruby delves into its mysterious pages, she's enticed into a most beguiling world whose allure and magnetic power she finds irresistible.
Martha, convinced that her newly empowered daughter is going crazy, enlists the help of the kindly parish priest and then psychiatrist Henry Shevlin. Henry appears imperturbable yet is inwardly reeling from his wife's unexplained disappearance the previous year.
As Ruby undergoes therapy, she meets local bachelor farmer Jamie McCloone. Through their shared loneliness and isolation the two find the courage to connect. But will Ruby's mother allow her daughter the happiness she so richly deserves?
The Godforsaken Daughter is an unforgettable peek into small-town life in Ireland's recent past. It's a glorious successor to McKenna's first two Tailorstown novels, The Misremembered Man and The Disenchanted Widow.
    Members Reviews:
    Lilting Irish
To rate this first as an audio book, I have to say the lilting cadence of the Irish speakers that Sue Pitkin gave was wonderful to hear. It's something that, as an American, would have been lost to me had I simply read the book.
The book itself was altogether different than I expected. Even after the first eight or nine chapters, I thought this was going to be the story of a woman, Ruth, who gained self-confidence through identifying with the occult and the goddess Dana. I could not have been more wrong. Ruth did gain self-confidence, and she also gained two of the three wishes she made of the goddess, but in the most natural way. The ending was entirely satisfying, both for Ruth and for her doctor, who was having problems of his own.
For those to whom it matters, this is a clean read. Nothing worse than an occasional "bitch" is used that I can recall in the "swearing" category, and no sex or salacious language is used, though an adulterous affair is implied and a woman confesses to having been raped years before.
    Great story and touchable characters
I loved this story of loss and love, and finding strength with the help of friends. change can be good.
    Pitiful narrator
The story was interesting, informative and insightful. A good lesson in psychiatric medicine told in such a way a lay person could easily understand. The dialog was excellent, but the narrator was so irritatingly pitiful it was hard to follow the story. In the same sentence a character would go from sounding like a male to having a woman's voice before he/she got to the end of it. It was not only difficult but sometimes impossible to determine who was talking. And in trying to portray an Irish dialect almost every sentence ended in a high pitched interrogative form.
THE IRISH VERSION OF THE CINDERELLA STORY
Where does The Godforsaken Daughter rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    It's in the top 80%.

    Publisher's Summary:
Prudence Eleanor Vilkas was born with a pair of wings molded to her back. Considered a birth defect, her wings were surgically removed, leaving only the ghost of them behind. Growing up in Los Vientos, Florida, Prudence meets her long-estranged Lithuanian grandfather and discovers a miraculous lineage beating and pulsing with past Lithuanian bird-women.
Above Us Only Sky is the story of Prudence and the Vilkas women as the novel spans centuries. Most of all, it is a story of mutual understanding between the old and young, a story of survival, and most importantly a story about where we belong in the world.
    Critic Reviews:
"The beautiful prose in Michele Young-Stone's Above Us Only Sky flies off the page. A stirring meditation on resilience, the ties that bind us to our past, and what it means to have wings." (Tracy Guzman, author of The Gravity of Birds)
"Rich with themes of love and loss. Young-Stone has spun a beautiful tale on the cusp of magical realism, but with 100% pure magical prose." (Heidi Durrow, New York Times best-selling author of The Girl Who Fell From the Sky)
"Above Us Only Sky is a raw, beautiful, unforgettable book that folds unfathomable horrors and unfathomable love into a story of incredible power. Young-Stone is a master writer, and her deft control of this novel's many moving pieces puts her in the highest echelon of our craft. Yet at the center, literal and figurative, of this novel is a story so brilliantly simple and deeply moving, you'll forget you are reading a book. This story shook me to my core, and I can't wait for the rest of the world to experience it." (Lydia Netzer, best-selling author of Shine, Shine, Shine and How to Tell Toledo From the Night Sky)

Heavenly peace? No, thank you. Dorothy Parker would rather wander the famous halls of the Algonquin Hotel, drink in hand, searching for someone, anyone, who will keep her company on this side of eternity.
After forty years she thinks shes found the perfect candidate in Ted Shriver, a brilliant literary voice of the 1970s, silenced early in a promising career by a devastating plagiarism scandal. Now a prickly recluse, he hides away in the old hotel slowly dying of cancer, which he refuses to treat. If she can just convince him to sign the infamous guestbook of Percy Coates, Dorothy Parker might be able to persuade the jaded writer to spurn the white light with her. Ted, however, might be the only person living or dead who's more stubborn than Parker, and he rejects her proposal outright.
When a young, ambitious TV producer, Norah Wolfe, enters the hotel in search of Ted Shriver, Parker sees another opportunity to get what she wants. Instead, she and Norah manage to uncover such startling secrets about Ted's past that the future changes for all of them.
