    Title: The Crane Wife
    Author: Patrick Ness

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-23-14
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 54 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A magical novel, based on a Japanese folk tale, that imagines how the life of a broken-hearted man is transformed when he rescues an injured white crane that has landed in his backyard.
George Duncan is an American living and working in London. At 48, he owns a small print shop, is divorced, and lonelier than he realizes. All of the women with whom he has relationships eventually leave him for being too nice. But one night he is woken by an astonishing sound - a terrific keening, which is coming from somewhere in his garden. When he investigates he finds a great white crane, a bird taller than even himself. It has been shot through the wing with an arrow. Moved more than he can say, George struggles to take out the arrow from the bird's wing, saving its life before it flies away into the night sky.
The next morning, a shaken George tries to go about his daily life, retreating to the back of his store and making cuttings from discarded books - a harmless, personal hobby - when through the front door of the shop a woman walks in. Her name is Kumiko, and she asks George to help her with her own artwork. George is dumbstruck by her beauty and her enigmatic nature, and begins to fall desperately in love with her. She seems to hold the potential to change his entire life, if he could only get her to reveal the secret of who she is and why she has brought her artwork to him.
Witty, magical, and romantic, The Crane Wife is a story of passion and sacrifice, that resonates on the level of dream and myth. It is a novel that celebrates the creative imagination, and the disruptive power of love.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ness fashions his mosaic of prose, piecing narrative with snips of a myth-like fable to create a bittersweet story of loss and love. The narrative pace will keep the pages turning, while the imagery and metaphors wound throughout will stay with readers long after they close the book." (Library Journal)
"The Crane Wife is a special novel: a perfect fusion of surreal imagery and beautifully crafted internal logic." (The Telegraph)

Among My Most Favorite Books Ever
Would you listen to The Crane Wife again? Why?
Absolutely, it was such a pleasure. I am going to save it for a time when I could use something to lift my spirits and open my mind to possibility
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Crane Wife?
The realization that the Crane was having such an amazing positive effect on the family, that she was a Goddess in human form.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene in the very beginning when he is holding the Crane and she wraps her neck around his upper body. I see that in my mind's eye whenever I think of the book. It totally drew me into the book. The writer was so capable of placing you in the situations in the book by his brilliant descriptions. I can see many of the scenes in full color in my head.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both!! I'm having trouble writing this review because I don't want to ruin the book for anyone reading these reviews, and at the same time I want to encourage people to experience the book.

    Russian Adoption, Love and Family
This is a great listen, a human story of facing cancer and the death of a loved one and the aftermath of picking up the pieces of life and the emptiness that comes after loss. This book about Lucy, a college professor, who teaches religion and has an odd interest in all the Catholic saints is funny, quirky, and deeply emotional. She nurses her best friend until he dies of cancer. Then grief stricken, she goes to Russia to adopt a little boy. The circumstances of adopting from a Russian orphanage are strange and scary . . . and I can truly relate to them, as adoption in Romania was the same . . . greasing the palms of the officials, and not knowing one day to the next if you would ever get out of the country with your child. You will grow to love Lucy, her parents and friends . . . and most of all little Matt. It is a clean story, full of heart.
Ugh, chick-lit again, and a bad case of the blahs!
This book was so utterly disappointing for me. So many words, such minutiae and so much triviality. It seemed like such a promising story line. International adoption is a real interest of mine. I felt like this book never took off, that was stuck on the tarmac for hours and hours. I didn't see much character development and thus, I didn't feel for any of the characters, at all. The endless nonsense about the saints--ugh, what type of plot gimmick is that? It wasn't educational or informative or even interesting, just quirky filler to me.
Add Lucy and Harlan's friendship and her year of endless grieving for what never ever was, for what she was actually afraid to even acknowledge. And how far-fetched was what Lucy learned about Harlen at the end? Really? (I am not going to say more as I don't want to spoil it for anyone.)
As for the narrator, I have mixed feelings. She did the foreign voices well but she got very shrill whenever there was any emotional dialogue. In addition, I really didn't enjoy the way she portrayed Lucy. Too much emphasis in her voice. It made Lucy seem downright annoying to me most of the time.
And yet, I plodded on and on even though I knew how it would end beforehand. There was something that kept me going. Therefore, I am giving it three stars across the board. And yet, I will not seek this author out again.
    Excellent narrator
Not only did I enjoy the story, the narrator being amazing just enhanced the whole experience.

On the brink of interstellar war, life (and sex) continues. Humans, aliens, and modified humans gather at the University of All Worlds in search of knowledge...and self-knowledge...but the first bomb has fallen and the fate of this multicultural, multispecies mecca is in question. A thought-provoking work on sexuality and the connections between people - whether male or female, human or alien - The Stars Change is part space opera, part literary mosaic of story, poem, and art. The Stars Change: an erotic science fiction novel-in-stories.
On a South Asian-settled university planet, tensions are rising, and as they reach the brink of interstellar war, life (and sex) continues. Humans, aliens, and modified humans gather at the University of All Worlds in search of knowledge...and self-knowledge...but the first bomb has fallen and the fate of this multicultural, multispecies mecca is in question. Some people will seek solace in physical contact, some will look for spiritual answers, while others will find their strength in community, family, and love. Some will rush home to make love to their wife. Or wives. Or husbands. Or indeterminate gender human and/or alien partners. Others will be forced to decide where they stand - what is worth fighting for, or maybe even worth dying for.
In The Stars Change, author Mary Anne Mohanraj presents a multi-layered, thought-provoking, and far-reaching work on sexuality and the connections between people - whether male or female, human or alien. The Stars Change is part space opera, part literary mosaic of story, poem, and art. It is fitting that a book that emphasizes the power of community was funded through Kickstarter. Begun as a project entitled "Demi Monde", The Stars Change is the result of the money raised by supporters that went to pay for not only the art and illustrations in the book, but the author's time, allowing her to focus on writing for that crucial interval.
    Members Reviews:
    A poignant, and erotic, tale
In The Stars Change, Mary Anne Mohanraj has crafted a powerful story about humanity, xenophobia, sex, and love that is as relevant to 21st century life on Earth as it is in the Stars. Brought to life by Sasha Dunbrooke, I highly recommend this novel.
    Love, Love, Love this story
(Important note, I am a friend of the author)
I've been a fan of Mary Anne Mohanraj for years. She writes good characters, believable, likable. She writes good sex, descriptive without being flowery or clinical, realistic, fun. In this story she's taken both out into Outer Space and proved that aliens are just like us, and we're just like them, even if that means some of us aren't very nice.
The first half introduces - and binds together - all the characters in unexpected ways. The second half? That's where things get good. If you're a fan of sci-fi, erotica, or both, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
That said, since all the human charaters of the story are (or more accurately were when they left Earth) of the Indian diaspora, I only give four stars for Performance because the reader is pretty obviously not.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Who am I? Why, I'm you. Or parts of you. The best parts. I'm the touch of Richard Speck, Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and Bin Laden in all of you. I am the thousand tiny angers and fleeting rages of your day - at the car that cuts you off on the freeway, at the kid who sneaks ahead of you in line at the movies, at the old fart with the full basket in the eight-items-only express checkout at the supermarket. I'm the nasty glee in the name-callers and the long-suffering pain, the self-loathing, the smoldering resentment, the suppressed rage, and the never-to-be-fulfilled promises of revenge in their targets. I'm the daily business betrayals and the corporate men's room character assassinations. I'm the husband who beats his wife, the mother who scalds her child, I'm the playground beatings of your little boys, the backseat rapes of your daughters. Im your rage toward a child molester and I'm the pederast's lust for your child, for his own child. I'm the guards' contempt for their prisoners and the prisoners' hatred for their guards, I'm the shank, I'm the truncheon, I'm the shiv. I'm the bayonet in the throat of the political dissident, the meat hook on which he is hung, the cattle prod that caresses his genitals. You've kept me alive, youve made me strong. I am you." The immortal evil defeated in The Keep and reincarnated in Reborn has come of age and begun to settle scores. He targets a few unlucky individuals for destruction now, but soon the whole world will suffer. And he will feed on our tears and our pain.
    Editorial Reviews:
That's not a graduate student; that's an evil force waiting for his chance to destroy humanity. It's a bit complicated, but if you've made it to book five of the Adversary Cycle, you won't give up now. Reprisal takes us deep into this horror series about good versus evil, and the gruesome scenes are not for the faint at heart. Kurt Elftmann's performance is stiff here. His enunciation is perfect and his characters' voices are engaging, but the narration needs animation to spice up this unusual tale. Overall, fans of chilling heroic fantasy sagas will meet their match in this audiobook.
    Members Reviews:
Reprisal. Book 5 in the Adversary Cycle.
Just finished reading Reprisal, the 22nd in the Secret Histories and Repairman Jack series. Again, couldn't put it down and finished in a day and a half. I'm down to 3 books left now. Fatal Error, The Dark at the End, and finally the revised Nightworld. Looking forward to the finish line but will definitely miss Repairman Jack and his adventures.
Good background info, and fun to read
I loved the Repairman Jack novels. I have purchased most of them, over the years, and have passed them along to new readers to keep the sales alive. There were a couple of books I had not found/read/purchased prior, and Reprisal was one of these.
If you are a follower of the RJ series, this book provides a lot of good background (I didn't really know what I was missing, which speaks a lot for how good the series is, but I'm glad to have had the backfill) for the final chapter of the saga. It's a good standalone novel on its own, in typical F. Paul Wilson fashion - fast paced but not cliff-hanger-y (in other words, not a huge life threatening problem at the end of every chapter), snappy dialog, nice character development.

If you're looking for a great book, this is it!
The book was the continuation of the Muse Series by M.D.James and it was fantastic! It kept me up reading late, when I should have been sleeping! Left me wanting more! If you liked the Muse Series, you'll love this!
The Academy, very good book. I was very surprised.
I found this book to be very engrossing. The only problem I found was the large amount of misspelled words. There were also several places where the caricatures used out of place. Example ,Uncle Cam or Uncle Kyle. It should have been Uncle Zack.
    I enjoyed the whole series.
Although I enjoyed the series there were spelling errors and the wrong name was used a few times. After reading both series about this family I was sad it was over.
    It was an okay read
This book was a good read. I could not put it down. It was a little short and I was able to read the whole book within a couple of hours. And I did find a few mistakes grammatically but other than that I enjoyed reading the last books of the muse series.
    Love and Death
This was a great further adventure, continuing from Muse books. It continued, the family on to the next generation, and the trials, and tribulations,of the families.
