Great title

Another guilty pleasure for this"old adult." What is a suspense novel without a psychopath? They all look so innocent on the outside.

Great book!

They Never Came Home

I thought this was a great book. It had a lot of mystery in it which I rarely ever read. It's about two friends that go on a hiking trip and never come home. After the families had agreed to end the search party, a man calls the Drayfus household to tell them that their son owed him a lot of money. This particular chapter is a critical one because that is when it takes a complete turn around. This book contains a lot of fears and mystery which makes it great I highly recommend it.

Narration can make or break........

Would you try another book from Shirley Rousseau Murphy and/or Susan Boyce?

I have read many stories in this series but this is the first one I have gotten in the audible version. I enjoy the books and characters and had hoped to share these stories with my daughter on a car trip. She has enjoyed other cat series so I thought this would be a good way to introduce these books. Susan has a nice voice but it does not work for these books. At times , especially the first chapter has a "sing song" quality and then at a couple of other points her voice sounds robotic. Some of the characters are ok and others not as well done. The narrative parts do not work well for me. I am finishing it and have managed to get beyond the narration but we could only listen to one chapter on our trip before turning it off. I love audible and listen to several books a month but I will stick with reading these unless there is a different narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the whole series. The characters work for me and I visit the California coast often so find the setting very enjoyable.

Borderline annoying

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I think that this story had potential. But I think the author wanted to relate more to the state of the protagonist than to just develop him. It was a little like having your eyes gloss over when an author cares too much about describing a room, or the smell of a drink.

disappointed

I have read all David Gibbons books with Howard and Costa and this is by far thre worst of the series. Was very disapointed. Lacking the action and excitement of the previous books, and way to much rambling taking up chapters at a time. I really hope the next one is a much better. This one should not be priced where it is on Kindle, its more of a $3.00 book. Buyers, don't be expecting to be blown away by this one.

Exciting plausibility!!!

When I read "Historical Fiction", one of the points I look for is accurate plausibility. That has to be there in order for the story to be "real", from my perspective. As I read this story, I found myself checking online maps and histories, just to see. And, I saw! The pictures in this story are as near to reality as possible, and as exciting enough to take you there each and every step of the trek(s). You see and feel everything that each character goes through from start to end, and you wonder...could this be the way it really was? I will be reading more of Mr. Gibbins books. They are exciting and fun, and somewhat educational, to the point one can split off the fiction from the fact. That can be difficult at times, but then it wouldn't be a good read nor an enjoyable trip.

Very Disappointed!

I have loved the development of this series, have read them all. Was so looking forward to Pharaoh and was sadly disappointed. Very little action for Jack and Costa, way too much Victorian Egypt Military garbage. The end of the book is so anti-climatic. You think Jack and Costa are finally about to have an adventure and instead the book ends. It almost as if David Gibbon's editor called and said give us whatever you have and David said ok. You could do an entire 2nd book on what Jack finds at the end and instead readers are left hanging.

I hope Jack gets to have some adventures in the next book or else this will be one series I won't continue.

Misleading Title

The title was quite misleading. Although it was clear that the author had scholarly knowledge of the mission to rescue General Gordon during the siege of Khartoum, there was more emphasis on that event than was necessary.. Much too little time was spent on the pharonic backstory.and the present day hunt for an ancient artifact that linked the three segments of the novel.

A must read for lovers of historical fiction...

I would rate this ten stars if it were possible.

A Glorious Literary Confection!

This rich and beautiful tale that follows Albas journey from despair to self-discovery is a feast for the senses. Populated with compelling characters, House at the End of Hope Street practically invites the reader to sit down at the table and have a soothing cup of hot cocoa with them all. My husband and I were fortunate enough to go to a book signing where the author, Menna Van Praag, actually read the first chapter aloud and she was so brilliant that we were hooked! All of her books were immediately sold, with many people buying multiple copies to give to their friends. But that was all right because I really love listening to something this magical and filled with fantastic word pictures as an audio book, so we got our copy on Audible.

Ms. Van Praags imagination is extraordinary and with it she has populated the house with characters that I would like to meet, rooms I would like to visit and an invisible cat I would love to have wind itself around my ankles. One of my favorite storylines was that of the aging Peggy and her lover Harry. After reading and listening to legions of books where love and physical intimacy seems to be reserved only for those in their 20s and early 30s, bravo for creating a reality that gives a whole new perspective on aging and having love and sex, even when one is well seasoned. I wholeheartedly suggest that you buy this book and taste the magic for yourself.

Definitely! A lovely combination of women's history and coming of age with some magic thrown in for good measure!

This wonderful novel is reminiscent of Hoffman's Practical Magic and Livesey's Eva Moves the Furniture. Magical. Tragic. Ultimately uplifting. the notion of a house full of historical and literary women who help lost souls find themselves is an enchanting one. Sastre's reading is dynamic, insightful, and entertaining.

So many women, so much talent

While the story was created through bits of fantasy and magic, it held so much real life in it.

Not really sci-fi, rather scientific fiction

Ransom Stephens' The God Patent is a unique sub-genre of sci-fi. There's no actual science fictional elements as much as an attempt to create a fictional universe where current science aligns more closely with religion. Two young engineers on a whim submit two patent applications that basically outline a computer neural net that displays free will and an energy extraction method that parallels the big bang. These concepts are interpreted by the religiously inclined to mimic the creation of a soul (the neural net) along with the conversion of spiritual energy to usable energy in the real world (the bang). Much attention is paid to attempting to harmonize story concepts to the existing understanding of physics.

At the same time, the story mostly concerns itself with the two engineers as we follow one life on the upswing and the other in a grand mal death spiral. Along the way, are the ambulance chasing lawyer, religious zealots, an atheistic scientist, and the Einstein level wunderkind. The plot is engaging with a good flow and realistically portrayed characters along with a reasonable insertion of corporate, government, and media suits. Sadly, none of the characters are endearing by the end, but probably the only bit of sci-fi is the cosmic justice and universal irony. One can just imagine the impetus for the tale was a late night, substance enhanced party with undergraduate physics majors taking a bet on hypothesizing alignment between science and religion.

The narration is well done with a solid range of voices for both genders as well as young and old.

The eternal conflict between religion and science.

This is a well told story of science verses the Bible. The characters are well done and keep you interested in the story. Alas the ending left me a little flat and kind of depressed. The author could have put a little more work into wrapping it up.

It is worth the listen and makes the miles go by quickly.

Great story to lose yourself in...

If you want to lose yourself in an afternoon of total immersion into two lives intertwined against the horror of Bali's terrorist nightclub bombings in 2002, read 'The Paradise Guest House'. I love the island of Bali and initially bought the book to enjoy a story set against it's lush tropical landscape and beautiful beaches, but as I started the book, I quickly became caught up in the struggle of its protagonist and her friend to find redemption and healing caused by a series of events in which they found themselves to be unlikely participants. A rich cast of supporting characters, not the least of which is a charming Bali beach house, weave a background tapestry that support the story and provides additional insight into the actions, character and emotions of the main characters.

Oulike storielyn. Baie geniet. Dit het nie te veel groot woorde nie so heel goed vir oorsee se mense wat miskien lanklaas afrikaans gelees of skryf het. Ek voel sommer al klaar beter met my afrikaans.

The narrator was excellent, clear enough so that I could make out each word. I needed that as I left SA after primary school but don't want to lose my first language.

Recommended for all ages.
