Matthew is a normal 11-year-old boy living with his parents and little sister in Surrey. He's too old and sensible to have an imaginary friend really. Yet when Matthew's parents keep finding him talking and arguing with a strange presence whom Matthew calls Chocky, that's what they believe it must beat first. But Chocky is oddly sinister, and keeps asking Matthew all sorts of complicated questions about the world and making him behave in unusual and erratic ways. Then Matthew suddenly does something heroic, well beyond his capabilities; the media become interested and the interest in Matthew widens. His parents refer him to a psychologist. Who is Chocky? And what could he or she want with their son?

    Impressed
This book was written in the 60's but reads like it was published yesterday. I loved it. Original, fascinating and hard to put down. Not as action packed as modern sci-fi and I wish it ran longer but I'm not complaining. I'm going to check out a few other titles from the same author.
    Imaginative story well told
I have never read this story but enjoyed other outings by John Wyndham, so I thought why not? I am glad I did.
NARRATOR The narrator does an excellent job of keeping this story together. His voice differentiation is great so there is no confusion. His accents are appropriate and inflections keep the story moving along without being overly dramatic. Very well done.
STORY A story that adds a new dimension to the usual nasty imaginary friend dross. I kept on expecting the nastiness that often accompanies these stories but it didnt happen, thank goodness. The story was well written and had good character development. I even felt a bit sorry for the oh so superior Chocky. It had some interesting ideas in it too.
I would recommend this book unreservedly.
    very good no-tech novel
I liked this partially due to the fact there is no tech involved. for the most part it is applicable to everyday life in the ?s surrounding the imaginary friend of the boy. well written and not drawn out. it has a story and sticks to it, something modern writers who go on for hundreds of pages before arriving nowhere should learn from. (are you listening Stephen King, Peter Straub? etc.)
    Highly Entertaining!
If you like science fiction just buy the book already. It was great when I read it years ago, and it is now great in the audio-book format too.
    unexpectedly fun and memorable
Would you listen to Chocky again? Why?
maybe, I hesitate because I don't have enough time for the 'next' book/podcast, etc, not bec of the book. It was superb!
Who was your favorite character and why?
I related best to the dad (though I'm a mom) & connected w/the worrying-mom but not surprisingly, loved best the main child character, Matthew.
What about Daniel Weymans performance did you like?
Daily listening on the way home from school was an unexpected treat for ME and my 10 year old too. I felt that the narrator was really excellent. I like to not notice a narrator, but ow I'll look for him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    no
    Any additional comments?
really a great book on so many levels, especially to be enjoyed by the young reader. But the bond that I enjoy w/my son after and during this 'read' is best of all. Its sticks w/you.

  • Fire on the Prairie Audiobook by Gary Rivlin

    Title: Fire on the Prairie
Subtitle: Harold Washington, Chicago Politics, and the Roots of the Obama Presidency
    Author: Gary Rivlin
    Narrator: George Orlando
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-15-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Chicago - the city whose name is synonymous with urban politics; the city of sharply divided ethnic and racial enclaves; the city whose police force shocked America during the 1968 Democratic convention and then the next year killed Black Panther leader Fred Hampton. As Martin Luther King, Jr., said when he traveled to Chicago in 1965 to turn his attention to the great urban centers of the north, "If we crack Chicago, then we crack the world." Black empowerment "would take off like a prairie fire across the land."
In 1983 Chicago elected Harold Washington as the city's first black mayor. This is the story of Washington's improbable victory over Jane Byrne, heir to the late Richard J. Daley's political empire, and over Daley's eldest son. It's the story of a coalition outside the party's mainstream coming to power and ruling in the country's most political of cities. In Fire on the Prairie, Gary Rivlin reveals the personalities and philosophies of those who were at the center of events, from black separatists such as Lu Palmer to community organizers such as Jesse Jackson, and from white liberals who held Washington at arm's length to Chicago originals like Ed Vrdolyak, the opposition's leader.
At the center of the drama was Harold Washington, an enigmatic yet engaging figure who fashioned an uneasy but potent multiracial coalition that ruled for five years. The conflicts and compromises of all are described in vivid detail and the resulting history is a thorough account of an election and an administration that captured the nation's attention. Like Mississippi in the 1960s or Boston in the 1970s, Chicago in the 1980s was the stage for a drama that revealed the dimensions of America's racial politics and offered insights and inspiration for future generations.

    Good material, terrible narrator
Would you consider the audio edition of Fire on the Prairie to be better than the print version?
    Not a bit.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I suppose Harold Washington. It's non-fiction, and doesn't really have "characters".
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's inability to pronounce English words correctly, and to accent syllables the way that a human being should, is so distracting that it makes it hard to absorb the (excellent) information.
    Fascinating with flaws
What did you like best about this story?
This is a fascination story about the man and the forces involved in the first African-American mayoralty in Chicago. The comparison and contrast with Barack Obama's compaign and Presidency is most interesting.
Would you listen to another book narrated by George Orlando?
The narration flowed well and was easy to understand. It was marred, however, by myriad mispronunciations, not only of ethnic Chicago names but also of many ordinary English words.
    Any additional comments?
If you care about racial politics (which is at the core of ALL American politics), this is a must-read.
Great listen. Narration was a bit rough
A worthwhile story well told. Marred a bit by odd narration with strange cadence and many badly mispronounced words, but still a story I was happy to listen to.
    The Narrator was horrible
Low rating because the narrator was horrible.

    Riepilogo Editore:

    A Quiet Masterpiece!
Would you consider the audio edition of Love to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but the narrator is so superb that I think I would always choose listening to this book over reading it.
What about Eleanor Brons performance did you like?
Eleanor Bron was able to subtly change her voice for each character, which made it much easier to follow who was who. She is so gifted that each different character truly came to life!
    Narrator is Wonderful!
I read and LOVED the book but this narration was over the top fabulous and brought it home even more sweetly. Thank You!
    An overlooked and wonderful classic
I am not sure how or why I stumbled across this book but I am so glad I did. Brilliantly read by Eleanor Bron (surely the voice of the archetypical Edwardian lady) this is the story of a middle aged woman and the young man who falls deeply in love with her. Of course there are obstacles in the way, and naturally you will assume the relationship is doomed. But there is so much more to this book than this. This is about love in its many forms and how people are far more complicated than you initially assume. Although this book was written nearly a hundred years ago, our attitudes towards relationships between the young and old have hardly changed and this will stir you just as much as a more modern novel on this subject would.
Elizabeth von Arnim writes with charm, a deceptively delicate touch and a very sly wit that had me chuckling to myself at times. This book also has one of the most powerful and moving endings I have ever read. You will be impressed.
    Hated it... Loved it
    Any additional comments?
After an hour I wanted to put it down, I had no idea how, it attained a 5 star rating from a reviewer I had happened upon. On its opening it reads as I would imagine a bad Mills and Boon but without the sex. The main female character is always giggling and happy and the man appears to be slightly less than a man, more a boy, lets not call it LOVE, maybe it should be more appropriately called CRUSH, or FOLLY. Why did I not like the beginning, had it been the accent and intonation of the narrator? No the readers voice only matched the lack of emotional depth in the text, the one hundred year old text does seem dated, while I dont doubt that people did used to speak in that frightfully correct way, I do not believe that people thought frightfully correctly, this rankled me as the characters were not real and rounded. All this said I had paid for the novel so I was going to listen to it. However after a few hours something happens and thats that an engaging story starts to emerge, the characters begin to flesh out, unexpected turns of events come about and some of the fluff disappears. The female lead becomes a real woman with real emotions, the male character finally does something other than just fawn.

    Short but delightful!
Looking back I'm amazed at the vast diversity of emotions this short novel made me go through. The wholehearted laughter of the first pages led to genuine curiosity in the next that gave way to confused amazement and sheer astonishment. It makes you vibrate and the intense, absorbing dialogue between the two characters is compelling and transports you to a tension-filled word game rollercoaster that will make your skin itch. Easily read in less than two hours this is a bittersweet tale drafted in Nothomb's exquisite and captivating writing.

    ...just ok...
This book was very slow moving, I found myself saying (throughout the entire book) "hurry and get to the point". The storyline was okay but the author just went on and on and on about the same thing. I found that the ending somewhat of a let down, because there was no resolution to the problem.
    Sorry read
Could a woman be that stupid really story just goes on and one. Ugh.. Ugh
I did not enjoy this book, struggled to finish it!
The title made me purchase this book, there were situations in the book that happened that gave no explanation. For instance, how did she end up giving Neal an STD? who else was Danielle sleeping with? That was never included in the story line. She gave Neal the disease and Neal gave the disease to his wife. But no gave a real reaction. The baby almost choked to death on an object, where did the object come from? Where did Danny run off to when the baby almost died? Anya was hot and cold, her character never stayed the same. She seemed naive. Did she or didn't she believe in God. At the beginning of the book Neal had to convince her to go to church, towards the end it was Anya who now convinced Neal to go to church? Anya never seemed to rake responsibility for how they got in that situation in the first place. The story line was whack, not at all reality.

    Ranch Hope
Finding Home was warm, funny and endearing - particularly to those of us who love all types of animals. The first few chapters were rather slow, while the people, setting and animals were being introduced. After that, I was totally engrossed and loving the unconventional family that Casie scraped together.
At first, I had my doubts about relating to the main character Casie (29). She had a big heart but very low self esteem, putting herself down and letting others take advantage. However, by the end Casie was kicking ass and taking no prisoners.
The best part, to me, was the eclectic group of teens, neighbors and friends who made the Lazy something ranch a place I would want to visit. Although there was a sexy Cowboy love interest for Casie, Finding Home was much more about family and friends than romance.

Skillful blend of voices and timelines
A lovely book it took me a few chapters to love. Our narrator and contemporary feels, at first, as cold to us as she is to her husband. As we follow the narrative threads generations back, then forward and back, we weave a soul, tortured and sweet, delightful and sad for this 'cold woman' at the stories start. Beautifully told. The audio narration too was lovely.
    Daughters of a River Huong
Superb story. The reader couldn't have been more brilliant or riveting. Loved the story and the narration. I'd love to hear more books she narrates. The storyline was magnificent. I like bed every minute of it.

The touching sequel to the beloved novel A Dog Named Christmas.
On Sunday, November 29, 2009, more than 12.5 million families fell in love with the television adaptation of the novel A Dog Named Christmas. Within forty-eight hours after the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie aired, the initial run of twenty thousand DVDs sold out. Two years later, when Christmas with Tucker, the prequel to the McCray family stories, was released, it was described by Dean Koontz as a perfect Christmas read, by A. J. Jacobs as lovely and poignant, and by Publishers Weekly as cute, hopeful, and heartwarming. Now, the much-anticipated third installment, A Christmas Home, will prove to be yet another holiday classic.

Growing Up and Letting Go . . . Bittersweet
This third book about the McCray family at Christmas time hit me hardest, I think, because as a mother, letting grown children go is really difficult . . . especially when they hurt or face obstacles. George is so level-headed when it comes to Todd making his own choices and mistakes. Mary Ann, like most mothers, has those invisible heart strings tied to Todd that keep her up at night and overwhelm her when she senses anything out of the ordinary with her son. Todd is mentally challenged, but he has a special gift with training dogs. When the town's animal shelter faces cutbacks due to the economy, no one knows what will happen to Todd's job there. Greg Kincaid's books are wonderful stories of not only dogs, but of families, community, and of people meeting the challenges of life together.
    Must read for dog lovers!!
This is the third installment in some innovative books about dogs, human passion and determination , and the Christmas season. Todd is now a young man working in the town's animal shelter. Though he is 'book slow', he definitely has a way with animals. His job at the shelter has caused these talents to blossom into training dogs to met human needs.
Todd has met Laura, whose arthritis has been less bothersome since she got her dog, Gracie. The nursing home is more joyful for it's inhabitants with pet visits. Then the bad news---the shelter must close from lack of funds. What will happen to all the homeless pets? Can Todd find another satisfying job?
This book has creative and heart warming happy endings. If you haven't read the first two books in this series, you'll be 'blessed if you read them before finishing with this one!! CHRISTMAS WITH TUCKER and A DOG NAMED CHRISTMAS are the first two books. Though A DOG NAMED CHRISTMAS has been made into a wonderful Hallmark movie, as with most all books, the book is even better!!! Great books to share with your kids too!!
    Inspirational
The third in a great Christmas series.
