story better than reader

Crais is always a good, reliable listen. This reader almost ruins it, but not quite. I dislike buying abridged books, but in this case I wish I'd bought the abridged version with a better reader.

Ugh! The Narrator!

I have listened to all of R.C. books with various narrators and loved them all (included the newest one, The First Rule). I gave lesser stars for this work because the narrator was so awful that I abandoned the audio version for the print version.

This is my first listen to Mel - He pegged Elvis Cole and the tone of the book.

You could break this one up or listen all the way through and come away satisfied.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different narrator. Mel Foster would be good for other books, but reduces Joe Pike from everybody's personal hero to just some sidekick with a few guns. And a better-suited narrator would have helped overcome the frustrations brought on by the lead female character.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Rewrite the female lead character to be way less annoying. Being somewhat annoying is part of her charm; her draw. I get that. But when you wish you could reach through the speakers and strangle this lead character that Elvis Cole somehow has any patience for, the whole listening experience is way too frustrating. This aspect made it difficult to develop any connection with some very important characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mel Foster?

Luke Daniels or Robert Crais. Both do Pike as he was meant to be heard.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Free Fall?

None. I don't think there are scenes that detract from the story or slow the pace too much. Along these lines, I never choose an abridged version over an unabridged.

Don Winslow always surprises me

I assumed, because I am a terrible snob sometimes, that a suspense novel about surfing would have to be dumb. In fact I learned a whole lot about the deeper side of surfing and was drawn, as I always am, into the rich, odd characters that Winslow creates and consequently rediscovered the grace and humor and tough charm that he, so quirky in this genre, offers us in almost every one of his books.

Surfing as Catharsis Metaphor

There is a rhythm to this book's pacing, as if the sea's changing waves dictate its pace. Don Winslow tapped into this familiar harmonic, placing characters and plot astride a big longboard so we could all ride the waves.

This story of ex-cop surfer turned P.I. surfer provides listeners genuine characters, a plausible plot, heart-rending moments of truth and terror (on and off the waves), and the soothing crooning of Ray Porter's voice as he adjusts our emotions with subtle shifts in timber.

If you have surfed, watched surfing, or wished you could try it someday; the reason for that near-mystical attraction to ride waves is explained in this novel - so to is the mystique of California's coast and wave riding history.

There is a lot in this book - great character twists, plot turns, over-the-falls action, devotion, transformation, an excellent close-out, and, of course, surfing. Surfer? Get it!! Not a surfer (definitely get it)!!

Awesome

I am from Encinitas, CA which is Don Winslow country. I love mysteries and surfing so I decided to check it out. I fell for this book right from the beginning. I loved Boone and his friends. I loved Winslow's storytelling.

But this book totally surprised me. It turned from light and even a little funny to intense and dark. I simply could not put it down. I was so drawn to the characters and the plot action and wanted to find out what happened to Boone and friends.

BTW, the narrator was just great and and really added to the enjoyment. I am reading Frankie Machine right now, by Winslow, and am really enjoying it.

Don Winslow is my favorite new author. Check it out.

Uncle Don's Slide Show

Winslow has the chops to play audience like a cello. But...

Imagine you've got an uncle who's a good photographer and insists you watch his summer slide show. And the pictures are lovely, but... how much lovely can you take?

The plot in Dawn Patrol is exciting, the cast interesting, and the narrative stimulating. But there are those damned deviations to look at Uncle Don's slides of Southern California. And while each of the little stories are pretty, they grow to become boring distractions away from the story arc. Pointlessly. Winslow wants to give us a poignant sense of place.

A Scheme that Backfires!!

This is a good tale of suspense highlighting how an under-handed scheme can backfire. The Audible description of this story is good. The real thick of this story revolves around the question: At what lengths will a person go to in order to get what they want? Be careful of the scheme you concoct for it can become your worst nightmare! This is an enjoyable story. I found no fault with the narrator.

One book and I was hooked

I came to crime fiction quite by accident and surprised myself about 2 years ago when i was looking for a new book and found THE FIFTH WITNESS by Michael Connelly. now I don't much want to read anything else.I found the Elvis and Joe series via Crais' SUSPECT, which I loved. I immediately bought the first three Cole/Pike-s. I have now been through most of them I was reluctant read the Pike-centric books because I am so wild about Elvis, but I now love the Still Zen quality of Joe. I hate guns. I am not so into this much violence, but I still really like the books. the Last Detective and LA Requiem are my favorites, but I like the whole series very much. not as much as Michael Connelly, but I like Crais enough to be wondering what will come next. To me, finding new authors is one of the great pleasures of reading.

If you like Jack Reacher then you should love the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike duo. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story line, fast paced but with emotions you can identify with.

I would compare to Lee Child's Reacher series.

What does James Daniels bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

James Daniels brings humor and down to earth emotion to his characters. They have flaws but they continue to struggle onward.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As soon as I finished this book, I looked for the next one in the series with the same author!

I really enjoy the way Joe's character plays off Elvis's.

Can't get enough

Since I read the first book in this series I cannot get enough of Elvis and Joe. The books are gripping from start to finish. Crais needs to start turning them out because I'm almost at the end of the series. I give these 5 stars.

Good book for the first in the series.

I really like this style of detective novels. The PI has a smart mouth and guts and know how to back it up.

The plot had some unexpected turns which gave me the impression that the author was trying to stretch the books length more than actually following an outline.

In the end everything was tied up in a nice neat bow.

I will definately be getting the other books in this series.

Slaughtered by sickeningly awful reader

I purchased this because I'd liked the previous Elvis Cole so much, but what a difference the reader can make! I can't even comment on the writing or the plot because the reader ground both of them down into the sewer. You've got a protagonist who's quietly confident, reserved, competent, so sure of himself and his boundaries that he doesn't ever have to be pushy. So, producers, OF COURSE you hire a reader who portrays him as whiny, know-it-all, desperate for attention and approval, and pompous. Good choice. This reader was such a horrible, incongruent, pushy dweeb that I couldn't bear it. What a disgusting and avoidable mess the publishers made of this!

Wrong Voice for the Character

I got online to see if anyone else found the narrator distracting. I was glad to see it wasn't just me. The narrator has a fine voice, just not for this first person story. As another reviewer mentioned, the main character, Elvis Cole, comes across whiny. I thought he was more of a quirky tough guy. He sounds like a quirky IT professional with a gun (I'm an IT professional, I know what we sound like).

I'm trying to power through this audiobook. I haven't finished it yet, but I also haven't listened in a week since it's not all that enjoyable.

The other problem, and maybe it's less of a problem when reading the book or with a different narrator, is that the character seems a little too full of himself.

Burke is an outstanding novelist

James Lee Burke is in my top five list of talented novelists. He's one of the few that can tell a really good story while using imagery that adds to the experience instead of simply subscribing to the theory that the more metaphors, the better. This was a marvelous story with several well-developed and interesting characters. Occasionally the narrator made it difficult to discern who was speaking but he did an otherwise exceptional job. I really can't say anything bad about this novel and picked it because of previous good listens by the author. I will listen to another.

PLEASE LEARN TO PRONOUNCE THE WORDS!

I loved the plot, love Dave, loved the book ... but the mispronunciation of so many South Louisiana words - particularly names of places - was terribly distracting. Except for this single but distracting problem, Hammer, the reader, does a fine job with the local dialect. But Mark - PLEASE call someone who lives in the area, and learn to pronounce unfamiliar terms before you do a day's work in the reading room.

Couldn't Get Past Narration!

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I usually love James Lee Burke books...but only the ones narrated by Will Patton. This narrator made every character sound the same to the point where I got lost in the story and could not finish the book. I agree with another comment on this page.....if you are going to select this book...read it don't listen to it.

Great Listen

Another GREAT Listen from JLB!!

There wasn't quite as much from the dark side in this story as you might see in other JLB efforts, but his mastery of mixing with the different levels of evil in this world was still second to none!

It was interesting to spend more time in Robichaux' head and less time spent on the interaction with the reeeeaaally bad guy "Boggs" in this case.

Probably the best Mark Hammer performance I have heard. He (narrator) did a great job!!

Probably about 1/2 way up the totem pole on my list of JLB favorites, and definitely recommended.

Buy the setup, it's fined

James Lee Burke writes poetry. He wrote it better in the last book in this series, but it's still very fine here. I had trouble buying Dave Robicheaux's motivation for this undercover adventure.

Fun read

What did you love best about Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder?

Fun enjoyable light read with pleasant characters. Not deep or even 100% believable but that makes it fun sometimes

Hannah. She's hard working and fair and gemnerous.

I love cozy mysteries that feature cooks. However, I could not love this book. My life is far from perfect, and I don't know anyone who has a perfect life. There for I could not read about such a person. Her biggest problem is that her mother is a nag. It made no since for her to be involved in solving the problem in the story. Her brother-in-law, a police asked her to nose around an help him get a promotion. He might not need a promotion if Hannah is going to solve the crime. Everyone is thrilled to talk to Hannah and spill all of their secrets. She goes to a casino, and even though she doesn't gamble or even like to gamble, she wins a jackpot. I wish my life could be that easy. I confess I did not finish the book. I could not. I like my mysteries to have realistic characters with realistic lives. This was not one of those books. I will however buy the recipe book that Joanne Fluke is going to put out with recipes from this series.

First and last book of the series for me

What disappointed you about Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder?

It feels like the author was trying to mix all the necessary ingredients of a good cozy mystery (a small town, a small shop, a cat, even cookie recipes), but the dish just did not work out. I could not make myself to care for the characters; the location was neither interesting nor atmospheric, the mystery itself, especially the outcome, was just not good enough, or subtle enough. I do not think I will be listening to any more books in the series. That's how the cookie crumbles, I guess.

Would you try another book from Joanne Fluke and/or Suzanne Toren?

no ... I have loved similar mysteries with women involved in solving the crime but this one seemed so simplistic, predictable, and unbelievable. The hardest part was the reader. I will always wonder if I had read the book rather than listening - who knows, I might have liked the book more.

What didnt you like about Suzanne Torens performance?

amatur-ish ... she would have been better off not changing her voice for each character. I managed to finish the book only because I distracted myself with my quilting projects while listening to her horrible characterizations. I didn't need too much concentration to keep track of the plot lines in this one.

boredom ... what a yawn ... I kept wanting it to grow on me ... didn't happen -

A good listen

This was my first audio novel from James Patterson, but certainly not my first taste of Alex Cross. I have read all his novels to date and found this one to be comparable. I do prefer the novels that do not include a girlfriend in Alex's life. I had to roll my eyes at the uneccessary detail in sex scenes and ridiculously placed comments about how sexy Bri was. The narrarator did a terrible job with her voice also. I think I would have prefered this book in paperback format. The storyline was fine and the characters in typical Patterson style. Enjoyable by any standard.

Wow...

Just when you think there absolutely no other sequels that can be added to a series... BAM... there it is. I loved it. Can't wait for the next Cross book.

Loved it!!

I have read some of the reviews and honestly I don't know how you can't really enjoy this book!!!Alex Cross is the man!!! I was into the story from the beginning and held on until the end...Pattersons descriptions always paint such graphic pictures from locations to characters and their mannerisms. I think this is a great read. I loved the narraters and can't wait for the new Alex Cross novel!

Double Cross Review

Just finished Double Cross. Book started out real strong. Good sub plots going on however I felt author lost some direction in the later chapters. It may have been his use of supporting information and or the over use of it Thank you

I enjoy this series, even if some of Kinsey's behavior is inconsistent. I really like Mary Pfeiffer's narration. These are always a great palate cleanser between heavier stuff like Clancy.

The only one that should narrate the Kinsey Millhone Mystery is Judy Kaye. Did not like the narrative with Mary Peiffer.

Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are looking for a great listen that combines an excellent story with an outstanding story teller, then look no more. Ms. Reed is by far one of the best readers yet! Her talents combined with Ms. Gardner is . . . well I like to think of it, "when the clouds part and the stars are just right." You will not be disappointed with this selection because Ms. Gardner is one of the best authors of the times. Ms. Reed is, again, an outstanding story teller. Thank you both for one of the best works that I've had the pleasure to listen to in a long time!

Gripped

I won't outline the plot as others have already done this, but I was quite gripped by this book. I recently listened to and enjoyed the "Survivors club" and if anything I think I enjoyed this novel even more. The plot certainly kept me guessing to the last - download and enjoy.

Excellent first read

This was my first Lisa Gardner, excellent. I blew through it in two days. I'll listen to some more, for sure. It was fast paced, action packed, interesting characters. It seemed to be a step above the normal thriller.

Fabulous

This book is great. Lisa Gardner had the ability to capture your attention and hold it from start to finish. She keeps you wondering who the villain is or if there is a villain until the end of the book. Be sure to also read "Gone" if you have not done so. It will give you more depth into the characters in "Hide. She consistantly writes great suspense.

EXCELLENT

I have been an Audible subscriber for several years and I stumbled on this title after navigating around authors who I enjoy like James Lee Burke, Robert Ludlum (Paris Option; Hades Factor; Janson Directive; Sigma Protocol), Ian Fleming (From Russia With Love), Scott Turow (Ordinary Heros), and this ranks at the top. The plot is intriguing, characters are colorful, and narration is fantastic. This is a very stylish departure from the standard modern detective / mystery, and a fine specimen of raw storytelling.

Couldnt put it down

I enjoyed this book; perhaps in part because it was a bit "slow" in spots -- the violence was not over done. I found it an intriguing story, liked the characters, and loved the narrator. I looked at it as sort of a hard boiled version of Adam Dalgliesh; there are lots of descriptive passages, which to some are dull, but to me, bring the scene alive. The narrator, Ray Lonnen, has a voice and a tone for each character, which really was masterfully done. I couldn't put it down.

Good enough story, but not entirely to my liking

I was looking forward to following psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin again as he cracks another case, this time involving none other that DI Vincent Ruiz, his sworn enemy in the first book, who has been fished out of the Thames with a grave leg shot wound and a missing finger, but no memory whatsoever of the events that got him in that situation. But I was sorely disappointed that the narration this time had been handed over to Ruiz telling the events from his perspective, with O'Loughlin only playing a secondary role. The story that emerges is a good one and held my attention all along: a little girl has gone missing without a trace while making her way from the fifth floor of her apartment building to the ground floor where a friend was waiting to meet her.

There are mean gangsters and a huge cache of diamonds thrown in the mix which also held my interest, but I could have done without the pedophile who is suspected of having killed the girla story element I thoroughly dislike in any book, no matter how well put together. I still may continue with this series, if only to see where Robotham takes it next, now that he's gotten the pedophile out of his system.

Just when you think the well's gone dry!

Michael Robotham can just plain write. His character vibrate with plausibility as the work their way into credibility and resonance with the reader. Flawed but tenacious as a terrier, DI Lewis will not cease his journey for justice no matter how formidable the resistance or nagging his occasional self-doubt.
