Alex Cross returns

James Patterson has gone in a number of directions in the past several novels.With 14th Century jesters and flying children as recent protagonists it's easy to miss his old characters. With this latest, Alex Cross returns in a new role as a rookie FBI agent.Having been lured away from his Washington PD job by an FBI Director who wants to change the status quo at the Bureau, Cross returns to the pages in the orientation class at Quantico. Balancing his family life with the professional skill and curiosity that draws him inevitably into the crosshairs of the most recent villian, Cross is the same character with whom we have grown comfortable.

Another fast paced novel, expertly narrated by a team of performers , who keep you sitting in the car long after you have arrived at your destination as you wait for the chapter to end. It is an exciting ride, with a setup for more.

Wolfing down the Wolf

"The Big Bad Wolf" is one big, bad story! After listening non-stop during a seven hour drive, we made an "extra" half hour drive just to hear the conclusion--and it wasn't what we were expecting. Patterson makes extensive use of foreshadowing to lead, and sometimes mislead, the listener. The plot is like a mountain road--you are always moving forward, but the twists and turns keep you on your toes.

The production values are excellent. The use of two distinctly different narrators is a welcome feature; and both speak clearly, distinctly, and with just the right inflection. Unlike most books I've listened to, this one even adds some appropriate sound effects and background music at times.

I recommend the book with the only reservation being that some of the dialogue might be offensive to those with children listening in.

less mystery, more cross

the story is not terribly suspenseful or compelling. Much of this book is further development of the Alex Cross character, which as usual is a bit obvious and predictable.

hilarious

I love this woman's books. when people see me driving down the road laughing my head off they must think I've lost my mind. it's one of those books you just can't stop listening to.

the stephanie plum books are like coming home to old friends, joining in a new adventure. they keep you guessing what crazy thing might happen next. the characters and the story suck you right into their world.

The Best Yet

I love all Evanovich's works, even the ones that are not quite her best. But this one very definitely is, with all the humor, mystery, and, of course, sexual tension you could want. Definitely one worth staying in your car and listening to when you should be doing something else.

Stephanie does it again!

Great story! I find myself waiting anxiously every year for the next installment in this series. As always, Janet Evanovich has left us hanging until next time!

Funny fast paced action!

What makes the Stephanie Plum series excellent is the fantastically funny and wild characters of the series. Plum is a bounty hunter but the kind that keeps a gun in the cookie jar seem to run into accidents.

As far as narration is concerned, Lorelei King does an excellent job, altough Lori Petty is still my favorite.

Definately recommended!

Nine adventures and counting. . .

This is my first experience with audio books and what a treat! Stephanie's adventures are as intriguing and funny to hear as they are to read. Add her colorful co-workers and a trip to Las Vegas, and be prepared to stay glued to your audio player. This time Stephanie is living with Joe, but still manages to get mixed up with criminals. Ranger is ever-present saving Stephanie from certain doom either in person or with one of his merry men. Lula is trying to become a supermodel-by-protein dieting, and attracts all kinds of animals - mostly the 4-legged kind. Connie gets involved in the chase this time by accompanying Lula and Stephanie to Las Vegas, catching the gambling bug with some interesting consequences. And there's a new addition to the family, but I won't spoil that surprise. In all "To the Nines" provides entertaining listening that goes as quickly as if you were reading the book.

What did you love best about Hard Eight?

Just all that chaos, one oops and oh well after the other. Murphy's Law has nothing on Stephanie and Lula.

What about Lorelei Kings performance did you like?

The characters are seriously developed so as they can easily be recognized. Still don't like the way Ranger is portrayed. I thought he was Cuban American, key word American. He sounds like Scarface.

Laughing constantly. Between the funny and the stupid and just plain dumb, it had me in stitches.

Highly entertaining......Action packed, hilarious adventures of Stephanie Plum the incredibly inept bounty hunter. During this tale you will feel at home with the characters and their family life. I actually laughed out loud. ENJOY

Loved all but one thing...

Did Lorelei King do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Great narration and good job differentiating characters, but the voice of Ranger was so cheesy, it almost ruined the entire book for me.

Loved the book overall. So funny at times that I laughed out loud. I just struggled so much to get past the voice of Ranger. Even though the author depicts him to be such a masculine and sexy man of mystery, the voice that Lorelie King gives him made me barely like him.

AMUSING

It was my first Stephanie Plum book, and while it is far from the best audio book I have gotten, it certainly was amusing. I loved her character and especially Ranger. I will definitely check out more of her books, but would like to start with the first. I think you need to get to know Stephanie from the beginning.

Loved it!

Kindsy Millhone has become a comfortable, old friend. I can think of no reader other than Judy Kaye to portray her. Never boring. The sound person may have been asleep at the switch, but it wasn't bad. Certainly wasn't Judy Kaye's fault. Her reading, as always, was flawless. I loved the book.

the formula

Sue Grafton is a wonderful writer and her story lines always move right along. This book is no exception, but it is wearing a little thin now. Q is for Quarry is filled with the delights of Kinsey, however the details are getting to be to much and the plotline is a little over developed in my opinion.

these just don't come out fast enough for me, read or heard them all and i always eagerly await the next.

the stories are always solid and not so easy that you guess from the beginning.

Grafton doesn't disapoint in this one either. Judy kaye is my favorite reader, she meters out the lines like you would yourself.

Nice, but boring in the middle

I have read most of the Alphabet Queen's novels, and many of them are absolutely brilliant. Not this one, though, and it seems that Grafton is loosing her touch.

There are many lengths in the novel, and the plot is not as gripping as in some of her earlier work. The true crime angel and the great showdown make up for some of the shortcomings.

A great friend

Kinsey has become an old friend and continues on her way with another submission that is better than the last. Sue Grafton continues to weave the history of Kinsey and friends which is getting pretty difficult while telling a different mystery in each book. Does anyone else catch the 1 to 3 unusual word choices that are in every book? She must do some real digging to come up with them.

My only regret is that we are getting close to "Z" and I don't think there will be an "AA". I have been re-reading her earlier works and they are just as much fun each time I read them. Sue Grafton is the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of our times.

Overrated by the Author

Paterson spent several minutes at the beginning of this audio book tell us how good the book is. Clearly he did not listen to it.

It is bloody for the sake of being bloody. It has ?Police Activities? that make no sense, such as, exhuming a body to look at it, then doing nothing else with it. The protagonist is utterly unbelievable, though the crimes are only partially so.

All in all it is not a book to bother with.

Narration a Disappointment

Admittedly I've not read/listened to the Alex Cross books in chronological order. That being said by the time I started listening to Violets are Blue Alex Cross had become embodied by Peter J Fernandez. Violets is a sequel to Roses are Red narrated by Peter. To go from Roses to Violets is a disappointment. The person voicing Alex Cross while having a dramatic voice, reads much too quickly for Alex. Alex does nothing quickly he's a thinker and doesn't give away much. This narrator seems to be in a hurry to get the story over with. The story is the culmination of the Alex Cross/Kyle Craig story line begun in Roses are Red, it would have been served the story best to keep the same narrator.

Acceptable

It is a fast paced story with the famous Alex Cross. The plot is far fetched but most people could be suspended in disbelief for a few hours - especially when the book moves fast.

The narration is excellent. Clear and dramatic pronounciations.

Overall, it is not great, but not bad either. It is not the best Alex Cross story, but it is an "acceptable" listen.

Strange Story

Even though the subject matter is about vampires, or those who would present themselves as vampires, this story had me glued to my earphones until I got to the end. "Real" characters and excellent dynamic tension. I definitely recommend it to fantasy/horror and murder mystery fans. Personally, I'll be listening to it again for pure entertainment value!

One of Patterson's best, and creepiest

Great quality audiobook, cover and audio sample made me nervous compared to the quality of Roses are Red, but it's a great aduiobook. Also this book is literally insanely creepy!

Not that bad

I don't think it is bad at all. It's not the best of the series but surely not the worst. I didn't think the reader was as bad as portrayed either. Growing up in Chicagoland I didn't have any trouble with her accent, in fact I think it gives the read a little character.

The only thing I hate is paying $11 for 3 hrs.

sorry to say but this Narrater leaves everything to be desired. She can barely distinquish between charactors and it makes the story very boring. I am actually having to pay more attention to the story to stay up with who is supppose to be talking.

I usually love the Stephanie Plum books and probably would have loved this one if it weren't for the horrible voice of the narrator. Make sure you listen to the samples first.

re-record needed

I wish books 4, 5 and 6 (especially) would be re-recorded. I like Debi Mazar as an actress in the right part, but she is a terrible narrator. I wanted all of Janet's books on audio but I really hate unabridged books and I really, really disliked the narration by Debi. I may return 4 and 5 too and hope that those 3 books will be re-recorded someday.

Sandford and Ferrone deliver

What I like about the Prey series is John Sandford's ability to continually create some pretty evil guys. He doesn't disappoint in this installment with the really oily dynamic duo of Horn and R-A. Neither of them have anything even resembling a redeeming social value. They are perfect bad guys. Sanford also introduces a new character, who I hope will appear in upcoming installments. Catrin Mattsson had a baptism of fire in this novel and is deserving of a Virgil Flowers kind of spinoff. I hope we at least see her in future Prey offerings. Finally, Richard Ferrone made this story come to life with his dead-on vocal interpretations. A musician could read music and lyrics from a new song and have an idea of what the finished product would sound like. But hearing the instrumentation and vocals would, for most of us, make for a better experience. Same goes with Audible books. Reading them would be fun but listening to them is much better. And with a narrator like Ferrone, the experience is kicked up a notch. A five-star winner. Keep 'em coming.

It Doesn't Get Better Than This

I have been reading/listening to the Prey novels since their beginning, back in the eighties, and for me, this was the most engrossing, the most maddening of them all. The whole novel felt like that exciting point that all the Lucas Davenport novels move toward, when all the figuring, all the questioning, all the digging suddenly starts to reveal what is what and who is who, and the action becomes a mad dash or avalanche towards the uncertain and usually pretty dicey ending. I guess one thing that made me feel that from the very beginning was the action of a very strong female character, responding to being attacked bound, and driven off into the night. I felt truly exhilarated by this beginning, and I rarely lost that sense of involvement, as the action and characters developed throughout, "Field of Prey."

I have always found that Sandford creates strong and complex women in his Prey books, and they are even stronger in this one. His daughter, Letty, in particular, is so enjoyable in this installment, that I am now hoping she completes her time at Stamford and comes back to the twin cities, to work with Lucas, a lot sooner than four years from now.

Once again, an engrossing story, twisty mystery, and this time with a bittersweet solution. On to the next murder in the very macabre Three Pines.

Magic!

The Brutal Telling is a magical book. The story line depend the characters and our understanding of them. It is in cosy Three Pines, but the story rambles over Canada. Reading it, I understand why tourists like the Clintons want to visit. Read this book. If you have already read it, listen to it on Audible.

Just switched it off

I tried, I tried to get through it but w 4 hours left I don't like any of the characters and it just seems like another book that has an agenda more than a plot. I just wanted a good temporal mystery. And this was a huge bore.

Whiplash from the emotional rollercaster

Everyone you care about shows up in the conclusion of this riveting trilogy. From the first chapters, you are thrown left and right from one event to the next. You barely recover from a harrowing drop to only experience a jolt up then down as the plot spirals twists your emotional gut like a taffy puller. This Prendergast novel is far and away among the best. This is Lincoln and Childs second trilogy within the Prendergast series. The first one, starting with Brimstone and ending with Book of the Dead, was fabulous. This trilogy, starting with Fever Dreams is even better -- you can believe it.

I give outstanding marks to Rene Auberjonis, the voice of series. His steady guiding tone makes the story seamless and enjoyable as always.

One of the best things about the Prendergast series is all of the characters are multi-dimensional. This trilogy humanizes Prendergast is a way that was badly needed. Good job authors in anticipating the needs from your audience. I have come to know these characters and enjoy seeing how they evolve. Its hard to believe that the authors were able to get so much backstory into this action packed plot. I warn you, you wont always get what you want, but as the song goes, youll get what you need. Two Graves a must, must, listen!

I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the plot in this book. These authors are far better than this. There is a hodge podge of all the characters in the series and you are bounced from one feeble story to another without them meaning anything to the other. Pendergrast is not the strong character that we've grown to know and enjoy - he's turned into a miserable weakling that we are supposed to believe is driven to the brink of suicide by the death of someone that he's not even sure if he loves anymore?? The inclusion of all the characters made me feel like I was watching a ping pong match and wondering if there was ever going to be a tie-in or just a book of 4 or 5 stories taking place.

A good read

I like the book but the reader needs to learn to change her voice better so you can tell who is talking. Not Has bad as some readers. The writer did a good job with story line but made the main character sound like a real flake at times. Overall a good read.

Hilarious New Mommy Murdee Solver!

So many laugh out loud moments!

I got all those crazy new mom jokes & couldn't wait for the main character to catch the murderer! Who knew she would go all ninja to protect her baby!?! Great Audible story. I'm off to re-listen!

The main character was relatable and I liked her. The story wasn't bad but I didn't like the profanity and taking the Lords name in vain. I knew who the murderer was from the 1st meeting but that wasn't a deal breaker. I won't be listening to any more from this author. Because of the language.

Narrator hurried

I'd have gotten more enjoyment from this audible book if the narrator had not tried to read it so fast. A bit more Interpretation, a bit less of a rush.
