Solid

The story was interesting and honest, fair, and laced with as much detail as could be offered about a relatively scantly-historied character. I longed for more tidbits of historical context because I enjoyed what was presented. Sometimes I felt it needed a little narrative connectedness to drive it along, but I'm new to biographies, so that might be just the nature of the beast. The reading sounded strangely robotic--it was clear and normally inflected, but there was a strange mechanical undertone that sometimes grated, possibly a result of the recording. Overall a solid read, though.

If you like Poirot then you will love this book

This book is not something I would normally read, but I like Poirot both on TV and in book form. This book has some interests and I very gentle on the ear. There were no great revelations but I would recommend Suchet as author and narrator.

Very highly indeed for selfish, sentimental and not intellectual reasons.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Poirot and Me?

As for most devotees of this specific journey by the character Poirot and actor David Suchet, the several farewells "they" must make as they "die" and leave the film set.

Which character as performed by David Suchet was your favorite?

Perhaps it was the David Suchet/Poirot incarnation who visits the elderly folk in the Nursing Home, in costume and character whilst on set, filming the series.Or perhaps when he comes across people in Hastings in real life and later whilst filming who either are confused at seeing "him" on their street and declare that they never understand a word "he" said during the 13 series.

Any additional comments?

No doubt there exists at least one Masters or Doctoral Thesis on the research available on the impact television series have on their audience or the actors who portray the characters in them. The psychological ramifications are alluded to when media analysts protest that the depiction of violence is reflected in the behaviour of the viewer. This novel hints at the impact that television does in fact have on vast numbers of people in the world. In fact I viewed a very moving documentary about a victim of the terrible events in New York who alluded to the calm she felt watching the eponymous series on television on a regular basis. This novel similarly can calm and reassure whilst listening to a pleasant, human journey many can sympathise with.

Excellent narrative from Mr. Poirot himself, David Suchet.

What did you like best about this story?

Suchet explains how he studied and brought Poirot to life. Its all the little details which Poirot himself would have done. Suchet and Poirot are one.

Professor, you need to do the narrative! Please!

Would you consider the audio edition of Taking the Stand to be better than the print version?

No, it would be a lot better if Professor Derhowitz did the audio reading himself. He is so well know and admired for his talent as a lawyer and a teacher. I really like to listen to him not his daughter. He always teaches me something especially when he is on T.V. Why would Audible devalue this audio book by not having him read it. The daughter should have read the forward and he should have read the book. Big mistake. I can't take hours of a women's voice and trying to remind myself I am listening to Alan Dershowitz words.

Stephen Tobolowsky Brings His Magic to the Kindle

I've been a listener of The Tobolowsky Files podcast since the start. Dave Chen decided to branch off from the /Filmcast to do something entirely different and entirely unique, and where Dave Chen goes I follow. Amazingly, the show he produces immediately proved itself to be one of the best, most compelling and most original podcasts out there. Stephen Tobolowsky may be one of the ultimate "that guy" actors, but he has proven himself to be so much more.

Simple put, Stephen Tobolosky is the best storyteller I have ever heard. With each episode of The Tobolosky Files, Stephen makes me laugh and cry and ruminate on life's greatest mysteries and beauties. And luckily none of that great quality is lost in mere written word. Stephen's incredible voice comes through loud and clear in the pages of this, his first Kindle Single.

Cautionary Tales is a quick read, but it's a quick read filled with anything you could want from great writing. It's got charm and wit and pathos. It's funny and thought-provoking and inspiring. Beat of all, Cautionary Tales is a deeply human piece of writing. It speaks to the core of what drives us as people and it revels in finding the good even in the bad.

At $1.99, Cautionary Tales is an absolute steal. It's a very quick read, but it's worth absolutely every penny. If you are a fan of great stories told well and with great sense of the author's character I suggest you drop whatever you're doing, pay the two bucks and enjoy some quality time with Mr. Stephen Tobolowsky. I know I can't wait for more.

I Sure As Heckfire Will Remember This.

I like Amazon Singles because I like shorter pieces. In a related matter, I love anthologies. This seems to be not particularly the norm and I heard Stephen King say he thinks people are losing the ability to appreciate short stories. Technically, this is an autobiographical work, but I think the principle remains that people don't seem to know what to do with shorter pieces. For those of us who are fans and for writers, I think these Singles are nice.

That said, this is of course a quick read.

I understand that hard facts and information on western legends is difficult to find and sift through but this book is juvenile with little research to back up speculation after speculation on Wild Bill. If you want a balanced, researched, documentative biography of Wild Bill, this book isn't it.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The absolute worst reader in the history of audio books. Fake English accent worthy of a backwoods high school trying to do a Noel Coward play. The book could have been good...I just could NOT get past Amateur Annie and her pathetic accent.

Stepping back in time

I know LA and it was great to picture it as it developed through the life and times of the Chateau. This is a beautiful blend of architecture and how it is meaningful to the lives of people and shapes and makes a contribution a place. I found the reading wonderful - a lovely voice, and the author paints a clear picture of the interior as well as the surrounding grounds as they play a part in the history of Hollywood's industry as a company town. I loved it and listened to it over and over. Great.

Old Old Hollywood

My interest in this book was purely nostalgic, having driven by the Hollywood landmark for years growing up in California. Bordered on one side by a freeway, and stretched from curb to curb on the property it sits on, it still is like a secluded giant rather than a welcoming, accessible hotel, that exudes a kind of seedy glamour and mystery. I was looking for a real look inside. Instead of a real insider's look at the hotel, this reads more like a peek at the registry of guests with a little of the upkeep history and the personnel that kept the place running. There were lots of famous guests, but the majority of those written about are the old Hollywood--prior even to John Wayne or Marilyn Monroe, with mere mentions of some of the early rock star guests, a nod about Belushi's fateful stay, and nothing more than a roster of modern day personalities that have graced the Marmont. The entire text could have been used as information under photos in a good coffee table book and been acceptable --as an entire book...it was a painless waste of time.

Every baseball fan will enjoy

A perfect book for the start of baseball season, Facing Ted Williams does a great job of presenting Williams from the perspective of his peers. The author does a great job of staying out of the way of the players' stories, while providing useful stats and subtle corrections to 50+ year old reminiscences in the footnotes. To my surprise, some of the most interesting stories were from players that faced Williams only once or twice. A joy to read, both to show the mindset of the ballplayers of that age and to learn more about the mythic Williams.

Teddy Ballgame, by the guys who played against him

Facing Ted Williams is a novel idea, engagingly executed. Heller rounds up hundreds of old time ballplayers, from stars to who? and gets personal reflections about the Splendid Splinter that are warm, funny, illuminating and that show us a side of Williams that I never knew existed. If you're a Ted Williams fan, or just a baseball fan, get this book.

What aspect of Jeremy Arthurs performance would you have changed?

His voice was pleasant, but his speech was sometimes halting. Many times I couldn't tell if he was ending a sentence or starting a sentence. He also didn't do the work of looking up words that he wasn't familiar with. E.g., he wasn't even close when he pronounced Kezar Stadium.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was good, but four or five sittings was fine.

I am an ex-NFLer and played against and knew many of the athletes described in the book. Also, I met Al Davis once just after I retired, and he said to me very sincerely, "Let me know if I can do anything for you." So naturally, I wanted to find out more about the man. The information about Al Davis, the AFL, the merger, and great players was all very interesting, but I felt it had two major flaws. One was that the author repeated himself a number of times, and sometimes he described certain scenarios at least three times (so and so was sent to such and such team). Secondly, the author was hired by Davis to write the book, and he was also a friend, and so he comes off as a Davis apologist. The majority of the book seems as if Davis wrote it himself--much praise for the great Al Davis. Still, I would listen again, as I learned a lot about the game I played and loved.

Entertaining, informative and deeply moving. This book does a fantastic job of showing the man behind the famously stoic expression. A must for fans of the golden era, the Brooklyn Dodgers, Miracle Mets or baseball in general.

Remember the "Boys of Summer

Although never a big Dodgers fan I have always appreciated the history of the team, it's players, managers and fans. Gil Hodges was the soul of the team during his time there and this biography captures the flavor of the times along with the story of Gil's life. Anyone with any interest in the history of the game and its meaning to American culture will find this book entertaining and informative. It is jammed with hitherto unknown nuggets of information about Mr. Hodges, his teammates and baseball in general. The narrator mispronounces a lot of words (my pet peeve - how hard is it to look up a word in the dictionary?) and does a horrible job imitating accents, but the story and pace are excellent. A FOUR BAGGER for baseball afficionados!
