Have always liked the honesty of the modern day rugby player. ODriscoll comes across as humble and human. He is a credit to a sport that produces athletes whos team ethic goes before that of the individual. A lovely contrast to the modern day footballer. Very enjoyable.

What an amazing Australian!

This audiobook went beyond what I thought was going to a book on the 'war general' and delved into the passions and interests of Monash prior, during & after the war. I got to experience the 'human' side to what has been, in so many history books, a rather two dimensional figure.

I found the ongoing machinations of Hughes, Murdoch & C.E.W. Bean elucidating - finally putting paid to why Monash was not heralded as a hero general by the latter in his works. If you want an example of How sheer brilliance, force of character & integrity can win out despite the odds, then I highly recommend this audiobook.

Great Story About a Great Australian, Engineer and Military Commander

What a terrific story. Monash was an engineer with a wonderful intellect. He applied his disciplined mind to winning a war and succeeded magnificently in a time and environment when new thinking was not readily embraced.

The story of Monash adds further depth and understanding to the Australian character.

Enjoyable but not "juicy"

What did you like best about Charles and Camilla? What did you like least?

I was in the mood for something gossipy, so I picked this up. I should have known that everything that could be said about Charles and Camilla has already been said. She made better copy as a Mistress than she does as a wife. There is a lot about the Diana days here (way too much). And there is a fairly long section about the infidelities of several monarchs of old...interesting information but not well integrated within this narrative.

What does Stephen Thorne bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The best part of this listen was the narrator, who was pitch perfect. Although the book has no new information, it is fairly well written so the narrator was able to make it flow.

Do you think Charles and Camilla needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Goodness, no.

Nothing New and Yet Still Sad

I am glad I bought the audiobook because I love Stephen Thorne's voice. But as much as I love history, I really didn't need a review of the extramarital affairs of British rulers, beginning with an Anglo Saxon King, rocketing on through James II, William and Mary, not of course skipping the Regency, Wallis Simpson, and everyone in between. We hear about Camilla's childhood, the Prince of Wales childhood, Diana's childhood, (of course she was still in her teens when she became engaged to the Prince of Wales, and btw what was her family thinking). We hear again about Diana's feelings about Charles and Camilla, and a discussion of whether they were founded. (duh) We hear the famous phone conversation between Charles and Camilla which was illicitly recorded.

I expect I am not the only person who wanted to know how these people survived the firestorm surrounding their relationship for so many years, and was naive enough to expect it to be told in a book. How have they survived such personal vilification, from being accused of bringing down the Monarchy, to being really repulsive people. Obviously many marriages crumple under much less pressure.

Boring boring

This was not at all interesting. Subject matter should have been interesting but it wasn't!

Gave it a good try but didn't like it

Tried listening to this book and gave it a good try but just found 1) the narrator was just not someone I was comfortable listening to and 2) found that yes the author did a lot of research but sensed that most of the content strayed too far off into unnecessary tangents. Overall too much stuffing not enough meat on the bones as a historical biography for my liking.

Terrible Author, Horrible Narrator

Would you try another book from Joseph Andrew Orser and/or Stephen Hoye?

The writer is all over the place with this book. It is more a disorganized stream of consciousness than a biography.

The prologue is intended as a quick overview of the book, but less than 2 minutes in the writer is going on and on and on about how they were seen as monsters and aberrations.

Chapter 1 is the youth and discovery of the twins, but is more a recap of the prologue than any real new information.

Chapter 2 is about them striking out on their own but gets more into the people who managed them and is completely out of order. In 1836 X happens and then in 1829 Y happened and then in 1837 this happened, and in 1869 this happened and in 1833 this happened. Absolutely no chronological order, and the topics discussed are not even do so via a different focus to allow the jumping around to make sense. Instead it is as if the author was just writing down facts as he could remember them. How any editor would allow this to pass amazed me.

There are entire chapters where the author says less than 5 sentences about the lives of the actual twins and instead quotes friends, business acquaintances, new papers, other books, and discusses other things going on in the US.

Inspiring, highly recommended!

Well written book. I love basketball and have watched it for as long as I can remember. I'm a fan of Allen Iverson so of course this sparked my interest. There's a lot of things people don't understand about Allen, but I do now. I thought I knew a lot about him already, but this book goes into deep details about him. Including his personal life, his childhood, and a lot more. I enjoyed reading this novel and this is the best one I've read written about Allen Iverson. Thank you!

Can't do it in three words - but his rendition of KP's sing-song and slightly effete saffer accent was very good to the extent that I found myself getting annoyed with him. Shame his material wasn't up to his performance.
