Very well done! A great read!
Russell Westbrook grew up loving basketball in California, but he was a late bloomer-he didn't hit his big growth spurt or get major playing time until his senior year of high school. He also didn't get much playing time in college his freshman year. People even doubted his ability to perform at the next level. But through it all he never stopped working to better himself and his game, and it clearly paid off.
If you are a sports fan it is almost certain you have heard of Russell Westbrook. Even if you aren't a fan of him or his team you know who he is; you know about his talent and personality and fashion. But you may not know the story behind the man, and if you are wondering what drives him or how this journey started you can find those answers here.
This book from Bill Redban covers Westbrook's path from playing ball with his dad in Compton to stardom in the NBA and everything in between. You will learn how the death of his friend helps keep him going, the charities and organizations that hold his heart, and so much more.
Redban clearly did a lot of research for this book and it shows on every page. You see the time and heart he put into it. It is very well written and organized perfectly-making it easy to read and find whatever you are looking for. Its also a very entertaining and informative read.
Whether you are a fan of Westbrook or not this is a book that is definitely worth a read. It is always fun to take a peek behind the persona and see the man behind the star. I highly recommend this book!
    Omg!!! Misprint...
Recived this book that i had bought for my 13 year old son, who is a huge Thunder fan. In the middle of the book it had another book printed. The other book happened to be a "mens sex coupon book" that was gery graphic. I was so astonished and super happy i flipped through it before wrapping it for his christmas present.

    Publisher's Summary:
"If I had to go back in Hollywood history and name two people who were most desperately and passionately in love with each other, I would say Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner were it." (Liz Smith)
It began in Hollywood's golden age, when Ava was emerging as a movie star. But she fell in (and out of) love too easily. Mickey Rooney married her because he wanted another conquest. Artie Shaw treated her like a dumb brunette, giving her a reading list on their honeymoon. Neither marriage lasted a year. Then, after being courted by Howard Hughes and numerous others, along came Frank Sinatra. His passion for Ava destroyed his marriage and brought him close to ruin. Their wild affair broke all the rules of the prudish era, as Frank left his wife and children and pursued Ava on an international stage. They became romantic renegades, with the press following them from location to location.
"Oh, God, Frank Sinatra could be the sweetest, most charming man in the world when he was in the mood," said Ava. They married, but then came the quarrels, separations, infidelities, and reconciliations. Eventually there was a divorce, and they thought it was over. It wasn't. Through all of the tortured years of separation and splintered affairs with others, they maintained a secretive relationship known only to those who recognized that this was the love of a lifetime. Over the years they attempted to reconcile and romanced and nurtured each other right to the end.
The love story of this couple has never been fully explored or explained - until now. Frank & Ava delves deeply into the lives of these two iconic stars and their turbulent lifelong relationship. More than anything else, this is the story of a romance lived out under battlefield conditions.

I liked it more than I thought I would!
great book, loved the narrator. I followed up by watching the special on HBO that followed the book with photos and music.
    Two amazing icons
This audio book was amazingly read for such a wonderful story of Frank and Ava.
    Surprisingly entertaining
I downloaded this to have on in the background but got so engrossed I had to keep stopping what I was doing and listen. I really liked the narrator also....gives voice to dialogue very well.
    Regrets, I Had A Few
What disappointed you about Frank & Ava?
This book was a disappointment to me in several ways. Like a movie that is one hour too long, or a musical that would have been better had they left out that boring song, this book felt like they had enough material for a 10 chapter book but decided to stretch it to 15. I also came away from the book not liking the principal characters very much. That might be the fault of Frank and Ava, and not the author, but either way, it was a disappointment because I wanted to like them. I thought I did like them before I read the book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Alan Grupper?
The narration was another short coming in my opinion. It was dry and boring and sometimes even irritating as he tried to sound like a female voice or do a bad imitation of Sinatra or Humphrey Bogart.

    Release date: 10-08-15
    Publisher: Beacon Audiobooks

    Publisher's Summary:
"The truth is I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves. They didn't bother to find out who and what I was. Instead, they would invent a character for me. I wouldn't argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasn't. When they found this out, they would blame me for disillusioning them and fooling them." - Marilyn Monroe
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Few actresses lived their lives in the public eye more than Marilyn Monroe, and yet her life remains shrouded in mystery to this day. While it's common knowledge that Marilyn's life is a rags-to-riches story, her life is bookended by hazy details surrounding her early life and even more mysterious death.
Who was Norma Jean Baker? Who was Marilyn Monroe? The unknown has contributed to the mythology that has since become part of her legacy, and she nurtured it. Marilyn was adept at constructing a fanciful mystique about her early years, and it's become all but impossible to disentangle the truth from the narrative that Marilyn helped establish. Fittingly, even though Marilyn is instantly recognizable and still one of film's greatest icons, her films remain unfamiliar to the vast majority of the public.
Most people have some preconception of Marilyn's film persona, seeing her as the "dumb blonde" without a brain who existed only in order to be gazed upon. However, one of the essential questions concerning Marilyn's life involves the accuracy of the "Marilyn stereotype": is the "dumb blonde" identity an accurate descriptor of her film roles, and how does it compare to Marilyn's personality off of the movie set?

This book presented him brilliantly, foibles and all
Gen. MacArthur is one of the true American heroes of our time. This book presented him brilliantly, foibles and all. If we had listened to him it would have been no Soviet Union. Unfortunately the politicians treated him the same way they treated General Patton and we are the worse off for it. This is a great book. I can recommend it highly without reservation.
The life of General Douglas MacArthur
This is a quick read and informative narrative of the General's activities during WW11 and Korea concluding with his retirement. I recommend it. For a more extensive coverage I recommend AMERICAN CAESAR.
Quick, but shallow view of Doug MacArthur
This is an ok cliff notes type of analysis. I don't think it accurately represents the complex individual that Macarthur was. It's a quick read but if you're really interested there are other biographies that better serve your interests.
WOW, seems that all blondes die young in Hollywood!
She seemed not to be able to deal with a lot of things that stardom had to offer. It is a shame that she had to die young and her background is even more scary. No child should have to go through what she did. I like the summation of the whole book of the history of her life.

    Title: Daniel Day Lewis
    Subtitle: The Biography
    Author: Laura Jackson
    Narrator: Matthew Lloyd Davies
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-17-15
    Publisher: Prospero Media
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Daniel Day-Lewis is an actor regarded by many as the finest of his generation. His portrayal of cerebral-palsy sufferer Christy Brown in My Left Foot won him his first Oscar in 1990, and in 2008 another Oscar followed for his role in There Will Be Blood.
His roles in The Age of Innocence, The Last of the Mohicans and In the Name of the Father further cemented his reputation as well as grossing millions at the box office, making Day-Lewis one of Hollywood's most bankable stars.
Stunning performances in The Crucible, The Ballad of Jack and Rose and, more recently, Nine have earned him more accolades, and rumours of an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of President Lincoln in the film Lincoln have confirmed Day-Lewis as an actor to be both respected and feared in the acting community. Yet despite, or perhaps because of, the height of his success and fame, Daniel is a man prone to episodes of extreme self-doubt. Behind his onscreen personas lies and infinitely complex figure.
In this brilliantly researched biography, Laura Jackson has talked to many of Daniel's close friends and fellow actors from the world of film and theatre, including Dame Judi Dench, Sir David Puttnam and Simon Callow, providing us with a fascinating insight.
    Members Reviews:
    Poorly written
I wanted to know more about this great actor so I downloaded this ebook. I did learn a lot about the man assuming the stories are accurate. The book is built around interviews with people who knew and worked with Day-Lewis and a lot of assumptions by the author about how he must have felt are made. I would prefer an autobiography! I want to know the real man, not the veneer.
    Five Stars
Excellent biography of an exceptional actor.
    The best biography ever read
This biography is outstanding. Ever since I brought home "The Age of Innocence" on 28 November 2015, I've started a miniature Daniel Day-Lewis marathon. This shouldn't be an autobiography in my opinion because it wrote on Wikipedia that he rarely speaks about his personal life. My admiration of Daniel grew stronger when he brought 3rd Oscar home. During that time, I didn't realize he was British. The thing that shocked me the most was the fact that Rebecca Miller was in Consenting Adults up to the moment where I saw Kevin Kline written on that page. It was sad to hear that none of Daniel's co-stars actually got to know him when they are off screen and when cameras stopped rolling. He became another person and then after filming of each movie is complete, it takes him about several weeks to months to stop becoming another person. I tried telling everyone I know that he and I have birthdays a day apart in April.(I was born on the 28th and Daniel was born a day later on the 29th.) It's well written.
When I found out he stayed in character on and off screen, I thought it only happened when he worked on Gangs of New York. But from reading this, I found he stayed in character in every movie he made. For example: When he worked on The Last of the Mohicans, he would stay away from modern technology and would probably hide in the woods while his costars were enjoying their breaks socializing and smoking. It makes me want to grab scissors and cut off that long hair. Daniel was never in the movie Silence. I know that from a video where at the 2013 Oscars he told the press that he need to have a lie down for a few years after Lincoln.

    Title: Can I Go Now?
Subtitle: The Life of Sue Mengers, Hollywood's First Superagent
    Author: Brian Kellow
    Narrator: Suzanne Toren
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-08-15
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 50 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
A lively and colorful biography of Hollywood's first superagent - one of the most outrageous showbiz characters of the 1960s and 1970s, whose clients included Barbra Streisand, Ryan O'Neal, Faye Dunaway, Michael Caine, and Candice Bergen.
Before Sue Mengers hit the scene in the mid-1960s, talent agents remained quietly in the background. But staying in the background was not possible for Mengers. Irrepressible and loaded with chutzpah, she became a driving force of Creative Management Associates (which later became ICM), handling the era's preeminent stars. A true original with a gift for making the biggest stars in Hollywood listen to hard truths about their careers and personal lives, Mengers became a force to be reckoned with. Her salesmanship never stopped. In 1979 she was on a plane that was commandeered by a hijacker who wanted Charlton Heston to deliver a message on television. Mengers was incensed, wondering why the hijacker wanted Heston when she could get him Barbra Streisand. Acclaimed biographer Brian Kellow spins an irresistible tale, exhaustively researched and filled with anecdotes about and interviews more than 200 show-business luminaries. A riveting biography of a powerful woman that charts show business as it evolved from New York City in the 1950s through Hollywood in the early 1980s, Can I Go Now? will mesmerize anyone who loves cinema's most fruitful period.

    A little long.
Her life was amazing. She was part of a "heady" time in Hollywood. I started to get a little worn out and wonder when it would end. I think it would have been far better if it had been an hour or two shorter.
Sue Mengers: The Life of a Miserable Person
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Nope: This book portrays a woman who lacked genuine friends, was coarse and aggressive, sweet only in order to get what she wanted (speaking in a baby voice, no less), and had no artistic imagination or appreciation. The book portrays Sue Mengers that way in the first hour and that's how she remains throughout her life. Her nickname was Mengele: that should give you a sense of how coarse and humorless she actually was. She wasn't at all political and didn't appreciate how momentous the times were in which she lived. She was fixed in a top-down vision of what Hollywood was all about, and kept foisting the same bland, supposedly A-list actors (Burt Reynolds??) into bland movies at a time when the whole world seemed to be opening up to a more creative approach. Most of the movies she was involved with were boring and forgettable; occasionally she lucked into a great movie when she happened to sign one of her clients onto a great picture, as she did with Faye Dunaway and Chinatown. But that was unusual for her. This book explains why agents are loathed and distrusted by actors, studio heads and other agents. It doesn't explain what made Sue Mengers a great agent, if indeed she was.
Has Can I Go Now? turned you off from other books in this genre?
The only reason I listened to this from beginning to end is that I love books in this genre: Peter Biskind's books; You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again; Bob Evans' memoir. I love the insider stories and learning more about how great movies are made. And Sue Mengers was legendary.

    Great audiobook about "The Babe"!
Listened to this with 6, 8, & 10 year old sons & daughter on a long car ride. Was very interesting to listen to for everyone. Another viewer did comment referring to references of the Babe chewing tobacco & drinking as a youngster... personally speaking for me, this provided a teachable moment for explaining to my children how those were not smart choices. Information pertaining to that subject matter was not overdone -in my opinion- and took away nothing from the overall good information provided on the cd. I felt that it was an appropriate audiobook for my childrens' ages, and we enjoyed conversation about it. We give it a thumbs up for any baseball fans out there, or even just a good historical story to listen to.

This book is just ok. The book does not tell much about his childhood or his death. The book focus on just his career. It was not as kid friendly as I thought it might be.
Great book to learn ablut a baseball icon

Entertaining, but this book seems to have not even been proofread. There are grammatical errors and many redundant words. To make matters worse, the narrator pronounced many words incorrectly.
    Not what I expected
What disappointed you about Made in Reality?
It was 90% all about her years and years of drug abuse... became repetitive!

    Jackie Collins book
How did the narrator detract from the book?
she mis pronouced alot of words and it just threw me off
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Made in Reality?
maybe just touched on the drug abuse but not focused 90% of her book on it.

    Publisher's Summary:
When it acquired New Mexico and Arizona, the United States inherited the territory of a people who had been a thorn in side of Mexico since 1821, and Spain before that. Known collectively as Apaches, these Indians lived in diverse, widely scattered groups with many names - Mescaleros, Chiricahuas, and Jicarillas, to name but three.
Cochise, a Chiricahua, was said to be the most resourceful, most brutal, most feared Apache. He and his warriors raided in both Mexico and the United States, crossing the border both ways to obtain sanctuary after raids for cattle, horses, and other livestock. Once, only he was captured and imprisoned; on the day he was freed he vowed never to be taken again. From that day, he gave no quarter and asked none. Always at the head of his warriors in battle, he led a charmed life, being wounded several times, but always surviving.
In 1861, when his brother was executed by Americans at Apache Pass, Cochise declared war. He fought relentlessly for a decade, and then only in the face of overwhelming military superiority did he agree to peace and accept the reservation.
The book is published by University of Oklahoma Press.
    Editorial Reviews:
"It is difficult to imagine sources Sweeney has not tapped. What there is to know about Cochise is almost certainly here." (
    Journal of Arizona History)
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is the definitive life story of history's most important Apache chief and restores him to his proper preeminent role in the region's history." (
    Choice)
"Trailing Cochise through nearly every skirmish and battle of his career, the narrative is a veritable catalogue of persecution, treachery and cruelty on both sides." (
    Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Good history
What made the experience of listening to Cochise: Chiricahua Apache Chief the most enjoyable?
Simply the learning about Cochise, and the Apache civilization and culture.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cochise: Chiricahua Apache Chief?
The description of the Bascomb Affair (Apache Pass) which is really the beginning of the Apache wars.
Did S. George Lee do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
This is a history book, so that really dies not apply.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, the density of the information requires time to digest.
    Any additional comments?
My main problem with this Audible program is the narration. The narrator's voice was fine, however, many of the words are mispronounced. "Mogollon" and "Cienega," for instance, and also many of the Apache and Spanish names were mispronounced throughout the narration. I think the narrator should have taken a little time and looked into how these words are commonly spoken.

Of all the show business icons in American history, one of the most beloved was Bob Hope, whose career spanned over six decades across film, television, vaudeville, comedy, and touring and earned him too many accolades to count. On the day of his 100th birthday, more than half of the states in America declared it "Bob Hope Day", a sign of just how monumental and influential he was as an entertainer. Along the way he performed so many United Service Organization (USO) tours, visiting troops, that Congress made him the "first and only honorary veteran of the US armed forces." Incredibly, he was given honorary awards for his career at the Academy Awards nearly 40 years before his death and decades before he actually retired from public life. By the time he reached his twilight, he was an instantly recognized institution unto himself.
All of that would have been impressive for any American, let alone someone who was actually born in England with the name Leslie Townes Hope. Indeed, the quintessential American entertainer wouldn't actually move to the country until he was four, and while his English roots may have helped his impressive impersonation of Charlie Chaplin when Hope was merely a teen, he quickly became an American through and through.

Quick, Enjoyable Diversion While Commuting Along I-405
First things first. This little, 38 pages, booklet is packed with several nuggets of information. Such as Bob Hope's real name. With a name like Leslie, nickname Les, there could hardly be any hope for the Brit kid after becoming American as a child.
Also, unlike so many actors of his day, he remained married to his first true live (2nd wife) for 69 years.
Mind you, I was not a huge fan of Hope. Much of his humor was too wry for me - at least his early movies. I did find his stand-up funny though. And, even though I didn't roll on the floor laughing at his and Bing Crosby's antics, I
Neither could I seem to turn off the TV when one of their flicks was playing.
At any rate, I'm giving this booklet five stars.
    Confusing writing
I'm convinced the writer had a thorough knowledge of Bob Hope's life and career -- but was unable to convey this to the reader. The writing was confusing for many reasons: confusing sentence structure, too little explanation about things to which the writer alludes, references to things most readers wouldn't know about. I'll need to read another book about Hope to really get it.
Words cannot express what that was like..
