"If you're quiet, you're not living. You've got to be noisy and colorful and lively." (Mel Brooks)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
One of the more well-known Mel Brooks quips is his statement, in reference to his birth, that "we were so poor, my mother couldn't afford to have me; the lady next door gave birth to me." While obviously fabricated, the story is worthy of note, as it illustrates Brooks' self-deprecatory Jewish humor and his way of transforming a childhood of deep adversity into fodder for comedy.
This is, of course, one among many famous Mel Brooks remarks, and over his decades-long career Brooks has built a veritable treasure chest of them. Although many of his forebears in the Jewish comedy tradition built their success on slapstick comedy (here one thinks of the Marx Brothers and Jerry Lewis in particular), Brooks' humor has always been more verbal than physical, closer to Woody Allen than Jerry Lewis. Indeed his jokes and famous one-liners rank among those of Woody Allen in the pantheon of great Jewish verbal wit.
As much as Brooks invites comparison to other Jewish comedians, there also is no doubt that his comedy is deeply polarizing. Pauline Kael, for example, was a constant biting critic of Brooks, and he was never fully welcomed into the bosom of the American critical establishment.

Mel Brooks Is an American Genus, his story is one of really not being given his due. He was always funny without being gross. He push the line of what was funny and always no afraid to take on untouchable subjects.

In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
When the American Film Institute ranked its top 50 screen legends of the 20th century, only one team of performers earned a collective spot: the Marx Brothers. Famous throughout the country for nearly half a century, several of the Marx Brothers performed together for over 40 years, and their nicknames - Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Gummo and Zeppo - are all well known today, especially Groucho. From the vaudeville stage to movie theaters, millions saw their performances, and the brothers became not only one of the most popular acts but the kind that paved the way for subsequent groups like The Three Stooges.
As beloved and culturally significant as the Marx Brothers are, it is also important to acknowledge that the character they portrayed in their films were clearly personas, so one of the challenges of any close analysis of their lives involves digging past their performances and attempting to figure out what they were truly like as people.

    Publisher's Summary:
What made 1939 the watershed year was the release of several critically acclaimed movies, including The Wizard of Oz and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But the most famous of the bunch, and perhaps the most famous movie of all, is Gone With the Wind, and one of the most remarkable aspects of the film is that the quintessential Southern belle was played by Vivien Leigh, a British actress still relatively unknown in Hollywood. Vivien was an accomplished stage actress and had already appeared in foreign films during the 1930s, but she was a complete dark horse to get the iconic role she's still associated with, and it only came about because of her persistence in getting cast for the role. 30 years after Gone With the Wind was released, one film critic credited Selznick's "inspired casting" of Vivien Leigh as Scarlett with the film's success. Another 30 years later, the same critic wrote that Leigh "still lives in our minds and memories as a dynamic force rather than as a static presence."
While Gone With the Wind made Leigh a big name practically overnight, she continued to buck the usual trend by doing Broadway and even appearing on stage in London during the 1940s, instead of focusing on movies. A lot of this was no doubt due to her famous marriage to Laurence Olivier, himself an accomplished stage and film actor. At the same time, Vivien became notorious for being difficult to work with and unusually temperamental, a byproduct of bipolar disorder that frequently affected her mood and occasionally left her incoherently hysterical.
Nevertheless, Vivien was able to recapture the magic in 1951's A Streetcar Named Desire, which cast her in the role of Southern belle yet again. Phyllis Harnoll praised Leigh's Blanche DuBois by saying that, in the London stage production of the play, she showed, "proof of greater powers as an actress than she had hitherto shown". In fact, it was actually during her time as DuBois that she reached the pinnacle of her stage career. Likewise, her role in the movie was described as one "of the greatest performances ever put on film" and "one of those rare performances that can truly be said to evoke both fear and pity."
Unfortunately, her life and career faced constant upheaval by both her mental and physical maladies, including tuberculosis, which led to a premature death in 1967. British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Vivien Leigh examines the life and career of one of Hollywood's most famous actresses.

    Great bio
What can I say about this book. I can say that I had no idea that Vivian Leigh
    had depression problems. Wow
I loved her in the films she was in. Great actress for her time.
    This is a good book
I was given this book in exchange for my Honest Opinion in this review
    Vivien Leigh
I enjoyed this short by informative biography of the legend that was Vivien Leigh. To think about how much she accomplished in her life under the negative and challenging circumstances is awe enspiring. I really enjoyed this book which is a genre I usually don't lean toward.

    Publisher's Summary:
María Eva Duarte de Perón, known to the world as Evita, stands with Jesus Christ as a highly influential historical figure who lived only 33 years. The similarities do not end there: as Argentine novelist Tomás Eloy Martínez has observed, Evita came to "symbolize certain naïve, but effective, beliefs: the hope for a better world; a life sacrificed on the altar of the disinherited, the humiliated, the poor of the earth...myths which somehow reproduce the image of Christ." During her life she was elevated to the status of "spiritual leader" of her country, Argentina, and after death she was regarded there as a martyr and a saint by her many followers.
Eva Perón prided herself on having antagonized and earned the hatred of precisely these social classes. Over 50 years after her death, Perónism, the political philosophy devised by her and her husband Juan Domingo Perón, remains a potent force in Argentine politics (the current president identifies herself closely with the Peróns and their legacy), but it also continues to inspire deep enmity. While a large portion of the country sees Evita as a symbol of national pride, there is also a significant sector that sees her as an impostor and a demagogue whose brilliant but irresponsible manipulation of mass politics helped sink the country into chaos.

Interesting Content but Not Enough of It
"Evita: The Life of Eva Peron" is another book about the life and times of Eva Duarte Peron - Evita. The book is interesting because it not only covers her biography but also her impact in popular culture, literature, theatre, movies. However the book is much too brief to be really useful and the pictures included appears to have been lifted off Evita's Wikipedia article and the internet with not much thought going into the finished product. Maybe this one works better as a Kindle book because as a soft-cover book, it looks like a brochure.
Her biography is to the point but much too brief and the same can be said about the sections dealing with her influence in other mediums. The author gives us some good information and some of the feedback and opinions provided are pretty thought out and enlightening, but again, too brief. Also there are numerous other examples that could have been included as Eva Peron was a woman who's life, career and legend have presented themselves in several movies, books, plays. For instance, in film, the author only discusses Alan Parker's cinematic version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical "Evita" and Juan Carlos DeSanzo's "Eva Peron" both released in 1996. How about the other films that have been based or loosely based on her life? For instance, the mini-series "Evita Peron" starring Faye Dunaway or Radley Metzger's "Little Mother". The latter is interesting because it was released several years before the musical and despite the film being based on "the Black Myth" and the names of the characters were changed and it is mostly fantasy, it was clearly inspired by Evita. It would have been interesting to read the author's views of this piece of work.

    Publisher's Summary:
Of all the legends and folk heroes who lived in the 19th century, men such as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett, few actually accomplished as much as Kit Carson. A frontier boy who hopped onto the Santa Fe Trail as a teen, Carson became the quintessential mountain man during the 1830s and was literally a trailblazer for John C. Fremont's historic expeditions through the West in the 1840s. Along the way, Carson learned so many Native American dialects that he was considered nearly as proficient talking with them as he was fighting them. In fact, Carson engaged in a duel with another man over their romantic affections for an Arapaho woman named Singing Grass.
Carson's reputation as a frontiersman turned him into one of the country's best known dime novel heroes. At one point, he led a group in an attempt to rescue a woman and daughter kidnapped by Native Americans, only to discover that they had been reading a tale about Kit Carson rescuing someone from Native Americans. Of course, the stories embellished so much that when one man found out how diminutive Carson truly was, he responded, "You ain't the kind of Kit Carson I'm looking for."
Carson's still remembered in large part due to the frontier folk hero status that he acquired among his contemporaries, but he was also crucially important as an Indian agent in the West during the 1850s and 1860s. While he helped the federal government reach treaties with certain tribes, including the Utes, he was also involved in the forced removal of the Navajo from their homelands. Thousands of Navajo died during the "Long Walk", and Carson remains notorious for his involvement in it, despite the fact he had attempted to resign and avoid his duties on multiple occasions.
Legends of the West: The Life and Legacy of Kit Carson chronicles the Western icon's life and examines the myths and legends in an attempt to separate fact from fiction.

    More than a guide
Having visited his home and read some of the history there I found this book to be very interesting. Never realized he was used so extensively by the government or his involvement in the removal of the Navjo's from their homeland. Good read!
Get to know the man largely responsible for helping found the Oregon Trail!
Short yet Informative account of one of my childhood heroes (tho those of Navajo descent have every reason to say otherwise given the "Long Walk"). Full of interesting factoids like Kit having paid the "bride price" for marrying his first wife Singing Grass which was three mules, five blankets and a gun. I never knew he traveled 16,000 miles in 16 months primarily on a mule (OUCH!). Last but not least, I wouldn't have liked serving as a US governments personal transcontinental courier for a period of six years as he did if it meant only having been together with the missus over that stretch for but a few months (unless you couldn't stand her, of course, HA!) I liked it and look forward to reading more works from Charles River Editors!
    Good book
This is a good summation of the life of Kit Carson. Not real in depth but more information than Wikipedia

    Publisher's Summary:
Though he is no longer as well remembered as he once was, one of the most famous and notorious lawmen of the Wild West was Bat Masterson, who drifted around Dodge City and other parts of the West and was associated with legends like Wyatt Earp. Carrying a six-shooter that he called "the gun that tamed the West", Masterson was involved in several duels and shootouts, much of which was embellished during the early 20th century when he became a newspaper columnist and was given a chance to frame anecdotes about the frontier days and talk about colorful characters like Doc Holliday.
Like Wyatt Earp, who once served as a lawman under him, Masterson was primarily known as being on the right side of the law, but he wasn't afraid to firmly straddle both sides of it. While tall tales about shootouts were commonplace and believed wholesale throughout the West in the 19th century, few men had as strong a reputation as Bat Masterson, who was known for public shootouts, one of which took place in Dodge City in 1878 that ended with the death of his brother and town marshal, Ed Masterson. Bat also took part in the famous Earp Vendetta Ride near Tombstone, which occurred in the wake of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral.
Legends of the West: The Life and Legacy of Bat Masterson chronicles the Western icon's life and examines the myths and legends in an attempt to separate fact from fiction.

    easy to read. very interesting.
    The Wild West comes alive
It reflects a brief , interesting view into the lives of a number of men who played a major role in the "taming"of the Wild West. The book serves as a good introduction to this era in our country's history. It wet my appetite to do further reading in this area. I recommend it to those who desire to learn more about this period in our history.
    suspicious
I haven't read original but this feels like it has been whitewashed. The Charles River Editors seems like a strange group. Who are they and why are they re-issuing older books? Have these books been sanitized or made politically correct. I don't know but those are the questions that went through my mind as I read this book. This book just feels very bland.
A good Historical account of Bat Masterson
Bat Masterson' s life is truly a story and this writers account is both well written and factual to the point.

The legendary New York Yankees catcher tells the incredible story of his personal journey, offering an unexpected behind-the-plate view of his career, his past, and the father-son bond that fueled his love of the game.
For 17 seasons the name Jorge Posada was synonymous with New York Yankees baseball. A fixture behind home plate throughout the Yankees' biggest successes, Jorge became the Yankees' star catcher almost immediately upon his arrival, and in the years that followed, his accomplishments, work ethic, and leadership established him as one of the greatest Yankees ever to put on the uniform.
Now, in this long-awaited memoir, Jorge Posada details his journey to home plate, sharing a remarkable generational account of his journey from the ball fields of Puerto Rico to the House that Ruth Built. Offering a view from behind the mask unlike any other, Jorge discusses the key moments and plays that shaped teams and forged a legacy that came to define Yankees baseball for a generation. With pitch-by-pitch recall, Jorge looks back across the years, explaining how - as part of the Core Four alongside Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera - he helped to reestablish the Yankees as a dynasty and win five World Series.
Going beyond his all-star career, Jorge also shares his life in full for the first time, examining how his remarkable journey to the big leagues began in the most unexpected of ways. Digging into his cultural roots in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, Jorge illuminates three generations of cherished father-son relationships that have made him the man he is today. At the center is the deep bond he shares with his father and namesake, Jorge Sr., who escaped Cuba and would eventually mold his son to be a ball player, honing his talent and instilling in him the drive necessary to fulfill his childhood dream of playing in the Bronx.

    Publisher's Summary:
If Lon Chaney will forever be recognized as 'The Man with 1,000 Faces', Jackie Gleason holds a legitimate claim to being 'The Man with 1,000 Personas.' Indeed, during his time hosting The Jackie Gleason Show on television, he developed numerous alter egos, including tough guy Rudy the Repairman, the energetic Joe the Bartender, and the alcoholic Rum Dum. Physically, there was no mistaking Jackie Gleason (the way one certainly could with Lon Chaney), but Gleason also possessed an uncanny ability to alternate between personas. In the years before the Rat Pack made the nightclub lifestyle chic and glamorous on a national scale, Jackie Gleason presided as perhaps the foremost nightclub figure in America, and nobody excelled at situation comedy as well as he. Paradoxically, the iconic element of Jackie Gleason's persona was that he was able to maintain so many personas simultaneously. In a sense, each of these characters bears traces of the "real" Jackie Gleason. But the fact remains that the many personas of Jackie Gleason make it difficult to figure out exactly who Jackie Gleason actually was beneath his show business facades.

American Legends: The Life of Jackie Gleason details his life and his career in vivid detail
American Legends: The Life of Jackie Gleason is a good book that I found pretty comprehensive for only being 48 pages. The included pictures and even Jackie Gleason's own quotes about his life and career. The book did a good job at showing how important Jackie Gleason was to American culture, but the book also showed you what he was like as a person. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
Thank you for reading my review.
    The great one..
Of course Jackie was. All class this guy and driven..
Well written, easy to read, a good bio..
A word about Charles Rivers Editors..
I really like their books, Kindle..The reason I do is that the books are reasonably
price, and are not long and drawn out. I am not interested in the hidden reason
a movie was made, I just want to know about the person, they deliver this..
    Great.
Negative, Charles Rivers Editors need to invest in a proof reader, spelled words, not a bunch but enough to make one wonder..
    Dutch..
    Very well written short biography
As even the publisher notes, this is not a full-blown biography on Jackie Gleason, but more a streamlined biography that is of interest to all fans; and this book delivered as promised.
From birth to death, this small but very accurate and articulate book gives fans of "The Great One" a great insight to the man we all saw in front of the camera and made millions of folks laugh with delight.
If you are looking for an excellent, short but concise, biography about Jackie Gleason, this book fits the bill perfectly.
    Four Stars

    Good read.
I knew it was a short biography, but I didn't know it was so sparse. Could've had a few more stories. Otherwise it was good.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hollywood has never lacked leading men who could captivate viewers with dramatic performances that depict them as suave romantics or dashing heroes, especially during the Golden Age of Hollywood when stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant graced screens. But in 1940, the fourth most popular star in the US was a foreign actor from Australia, and unlike other movie stars, he was more notorious for his pursuits off the screen than on it. In an era long before social media and TMZ, Errol Flynn represented the epitome of a swashbuckling playboy, with enough mystery and intrigue surrounding him and his background to fascinate even those who didn't see his movies. An article in Time magazine got to the heart of the matter in 1938 when it noted, "Of all the heroes of Hollywood, Errol Flynn has by long odds the greatest amount of non-phony glamor. His life has been as adventurous as any of the swashbuckling characters he has portrayed. At 18, he was a member of the English Olympic boxing team. At 19, he was master of an island trading schooner in the South Seas. He has chased head-hunters in New Guinea and 'recruited' blacks for British miners. Once he made $5,000 mining gold, got drunk and blew it all on a schooner, The Sirocco, which he sailed in the South Seas and wrote a book about (Beam Ends)."
Naturally, when he was at the peak of his powers both on and off the screen, Flynn frequently joked about his lifestyle and traded upon it for popularity, with comments like "I like my whisky old and my women young" and "Women won't let me stay single and I won't let me stay married." Not surprisingly, Flynn was just as fast and loose with his money, to the extent that he once asserted, "Any man who has $10,000 left when he dies is a failure."

    Release date: 04-28-15
    Publisher: HarperAudio

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
The acclaimed actress and dedicated activist shares her personal journey of discovery and destroys outdated ideas about partnership, love, and family that will resonate with anyone in an unconventional life situation.
Actress and activist Maria Bello made waves with her essay "Coming Out as a Modern Family" in the New York Times' popular "Modern Love" column, in which she recalled telling her son that she had fallen in love with her best friend, a woman - and her relief at his easy and immediate acceptance with the phrase, "Whatever, Mom, love is love." She made a compelling argument about the fluidity of partnerships and how families today come in a myriad of designs.
In her first book, Bello broadens her insights as she examines the idea of partnership in every woman's life and her own. She examines the myths that so many of us believe about partnership - that the partnership begins when the sex begins, that partnerships are static, that you have to love yourself before you can be loved - and turns them on their heads. Bello explores how many different relationships - romantic, platonic, spiritual, familial, educational - helped define her life. She encourages women to realize that the only labels we have are the ones we put on ourselves, and the best, happiest partnerships are the ones that make your life better, even if they dont fit the mold of "typical".
Throughout this powerful and engaging read, Bello shares intimate stories and lessons on how she has come to discover her happiest self, accept who she is, and live honestly and freely and tells the stories of those who came to her after her Times columns, grateful that someone gave voice to their life choices.
Whatever...Love Is Love is not a memoir about an actress. It is a frank, raw, and honest audiobook about the way every woman questions the roles she plays in love, work, and life, filled with wisdom, questions, and insights relevant to us all.

    Inspiring and wonderful
This is truly an inspiration. I loved how Maria Bello questioned some of the big issues that at some point everyone questions too and how she shares her thoughts about them. The acting of course is great. This is such a personal book but somehow it is related to the reader's life as well at least to mine. Great book!
