John Calvin (1509-1564) was one of the most important religious figures of the last millennium and an instantly recognizable name across the globe. Calvin was an influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation, and the period when he was most active, the 1530s and 1540s, was marked by increased complexity and the diffusion of the Reformation into several branches. Alongside Martin Luther, Calvin was one of the central Reformers, and after fleeing to Basel, Switzerland, he published the Institutes of the Christian Religion in 1536.

God's plan was going to be fulfilled, and God was going to use an individual to bring about the betrayal of Jesus, but at the same time Judas made several conscious choices along the way to reject the Messiah and turn Jesus over to the Roman authorities.

Keeping An Open Mind

I liked this book. It gave me much to consider. It was well written and well researched. It is definitely one to read to give you an insight to the disciples' attitudes toward Judas, and their relationship to each other and Christ as their leader.

Fairly good exposition of what is known of Judas

What is amazing to me is how this story shows Jesus's example of not judging others even if He knew what Judas' choices would be. Jesus offers Judas many chances to change his mind and accept redemption and forgiveness of his past sins even knowing how Judas had stolen from the group funds. Amazing. That is the example for us to live in our own chance to behold the goodness in all the people we know, and to forgive. Most of the time very hard to do.

The best book on Martin Luther's Legacy and reform

History is repeating itself . If it is evident in today's political climate . A very good understanding of Christianity .

Fell Flat

I love history and learning more about people who shaped our lives. I purchased this book to learn about Martin Luther. After completing the book, I didn't feel I knew anything more about him than I did before I picked it up. I was very disappointed in this book.

The man that sparked change that exists today

Martin Luther was a man of strong will and convictions. He was educated well and shaped by classical literature. He became a monk at his fathers disapproval and his intellectual prowess rose him to the top of his class and promotion to Professor of Biblical Theology. His preaching received admiration and his study of the Hebrew and Greek would later give way to his most controversial claim of being saved by God's grace, disapproving the doctrine of indulgences, and the infamous 95 Theses nailed to the church door. You must purchase the book to get the fine details of the drama that would play out to get a real appreciation of this individual and how he remained solid in his convictions.

He would later write on issues such as moral fairness and his leadership would convince monks and nuns to renounce their celibate vows and later marry. Too would he later marry and have children.

Read how the Lutheran Church would emerge as well as how his writing would affect future generations. This German Priest and Theologian not only sparked the Protestant Reformation but continues today to impact the world.

I love to read nonfiction books about influential people. This fit the bill for me.

Pope Benedict XVI: Protector of Faith or Opponent of Progress is a brief (154 pages) biographical sketch of Pope Benedict XVI (born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger). Known as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and who still wears the white robe, Ratzinger is a theologian who became pope and then resigned. His story is perhaps a lesson to those who hold high office. Sometimes high office keeps you were destined to do. While not in any way comparing myself to the pope, I understand. Nearly fourteen years as an administrative attorney, I yearned to write and research. In late 2014, I got chance. I changed offices, not positions, where now 99% of my job is to research and write. Sometimes you have to step back or down, as in Ratzinger's case. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was a born scholar, though perhaps not the usual professor as he often rankled, and disagreed, with professors who taught at the universities where he taught. He is the churchmanâs, the priestsâ professor.

Wyatt North again, as in Pope John XXIII: The Good Pope has a simple, direct, and concise way writing style that tells Ratzingerâs story that encourages readers to study more about his subject, about the Catholicism, and the Vatican. Along the way, several important theories and concepts (some but not all include the two source doctrine concerning relevations, the pre-Vatican II mass, the role of the liturgy, and the use of biblical exegesis).I am drawn to Wyatt North's analysis of Catholicism whether for purely academic reasons or to determine whether the Catholic faith is for me.

It is a balanced approach that discusses Ratzingerâs foibles as well as the highlights of the pope emeritusâ life. A few times it is hard to tell which of the Ratzingers North is referring to. The confusion is due in part to there being two Ratzingers sons as well as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI earlier in life having different titles, a necessary consequence of his rise through the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. For readers wanting a detailed inside look into the Vatican, this is not that kind of book. Wyatt North concentrates his energies on giving his readers a glimpse of who Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is as well as his faith and beliefs.

An awesome book about an awesome man. I have read books written by him and has a great way of expressing his love for God and his understanding of the bible. Your book is a great start on getting to know this fabulous leader of the Catholic Church.

Short and to the point, summarized historical story of Joan the Arc. Nothing spectacular but if you are into history and not too much into reading a volume, then this will give you a bit of a taste for knowledge on the subject.

You may scratch you head while reading this book...

There is out there somewhere a ubiquitous person(or firm?) using the nom de plume of Messrs. "Charles River Editors," whoever he (or they) may be. This particular book is apparently not copyrighted, but it does have 177 footnotes, not an unusual number for books by Mr. Editors.

Not that I have any problem with Charles. He provides many books that can be copied to Kindle for free [I downloaded this one from Amazon/Kindle on Dec. 13 for $0.00]. Charles' books are usually full of more dry facts than seem necessary, and he consequently often loses the "big picture." Fortunately, Charles does not editorialize much, thereby leaving his readers to draw conclusions.

"The Leaders of the Mormons" left me with a few subjective observations about the Mormon religion and its founders, viz,
