An Interesting Take on Mr. Darcy

This is the fist book I have listened to by this author. I have listened to others who have continued Mr. and Mrs. Darcy's story. this was one of the more interesting ones because it was set in modern times with all of the spy equipment and macinations that go along with a rich spy who loves his wife.

The interactions between them and their dogs is a bit funny. Mrs. Darcy or Lizzy is a dog psychologist of all things. Yet she likes an adventure as much as Mr. Darcy. This adventure included not one or two dog but four dogs, to childen and five grown adults riding in one landrover that is also equipped with many special compartments.

I was provided this book by the author for an honest review. I would recommend this book if you are a fan of the Darcys but a modern day version of them. Audiobook blast provided the book.

You won't BELIEVE the crowd that goes along!

Another bit of great fun in the modern life of Lizzie and Mister Darcy. After six months of marriage, Darcy announces that they will go on a Honeymoon. Lizzie is thinking the Maldives. Darcy announces that it will be Scotland first, as he has an errand to run for the Templars. Okay. But her sister Mary phones in the middle of the night with a major problem involving a new villainess, so Lizzie goes to help, and this results in an 8 hour trip to Edinburgh accompanied by four victims, two children, and four dogs. Along the way they are accosted by two previous villains, the awful Caroline, and the new villainess. There is lots of snark, awful puns, and real silliness. This series is really too much fun to miss, and each book is not too long.

Jannie Meisberger is an excellent voice performer and this book demonstrates it clearly.

A honeymoon, finally?

I am not a fan of modern Darcy/Lizzy stories, but this grouping of stories by Barbara Silkstone takes the cake. Mister Darcy's Honeymoon has the angst you expect with a dose of comedy that keeps you on your toes. The Vatican is after the Templar's Red Rosary and foreign domestic servants being held against their will by their employers are being pursued by the head of a human trafficking conglomeration. The Darcys need to get them to Scotland with Little Annie and her dog Sammy as well as Derby, Squire, and Boris. Add Caroline Bingley to the group, who is hated by Derby and Squire, stuck in close quarters while trying to evade their pursuers and you have a candidate for a diversion. This was a fun story. Jannie Meisberger does a wonderful job bringing the characters and situations to life. Her character's voices have continuity throughout the series. I recommend this story to anyone who loves Darcy and Elizabeth and wants to laugh.

Even better with the narration!

Seriously?

Evidently not edited for publication. The narrator turns his mic off and on, clearing his throat and sniffing, starting over and repeating himself. The writing was not impressive to begin with, and the narrator finished it for me. The entire story could have been summarized in two paragraphs on Wikipedia.

1888 Murder of Eight Year Old Boy in England

A true story of the tragic murder of young Johnny Gill in Bradford, England . . . a killing so gruesome that some thought it to be the work of Jack the Ripper . . . the tale is well told, with explicit detail, sad and sick as it was . . . and all through the book, I had a niggling feeling . . . which in the end is the same conclusion that the author came to in the afterward . . . don't miss that . . . to me that's one of the best parts . . .

Excellent

So much more than a dry reciting of historical facts, this true story grabs the listener and just won't let go. It is intelligent, chock full of historical truisms drawn from paper sources of 1888/89. Do not turn off the audio at what seems to be the end of the drama. Be sure to listen to the author in his afterward. This audio won my full vote of 5- all.

This is an okay telling of a real incident. Chapter 5 has several production glitches in that some how got missed. Other then that; it's just okay.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It didn't start too bad. Ok story, slightly monotonous narrative, but decent enough - but come chapter 4 and the recording is suddenly unedited! The narrator, stumbles, coughs and clicks his fingers again and again. Reads the same phrases over and over trying to get it right. More snapping his fingers and clearing his throat.For the first couple of minutes it was pretty comical, then incredibly annoying as it went on and on. Then it became frankly embarrassing. Did no one listen to the recording? I suggest you edit it asap. I had to give up in the end, as there is no telling how long this goes on for. Annoying when I had already spent a couple of hours listening to the book.

Only discovered Barbara Wood

in the past year and I don't know whether to cry that I missed her works before, or rejoice that I've discovered them and can look forward to reading all of her backlist. Just a phenomenal writer. I have seen some of the critiques about plot devices/coincidences and if one is of that bent, you can probably find some complaints if you are very picky, but none of that bothers me because her ability to transport one into another time and place is exceptional. I see that she diligently/obsessively researches and travels to the places she writes about, but there is a verisimilitude in her writing that to me goes beyond research or travel - it is almost as if Wood can transport herself to another time and place to give life to her books or the great collective unconscious that sometimes fuels writers looks upon her with great favor.

Epic Quest Set in the Roman Empire

The 400+ page saga of Barbara Wood's heroine, Selene, begins with a mysterious birth in the ancient city of Antioch durng the time of the first Caesars of the Roman Empire. Two fugitives, a well-to-do Roman and his in-labor wife, appear on the doorstep of the healing woman, Mera who performs a hasty midwifery minutes before Roman soldiers appear, kill the new father and haul away his wife and baby son. Journey of Courage

Kept me on the edge of my seat. Suspense, adventure, mystery and mayhem...Hannah Duggan's book, Dear Kate, has it all. A letter misdirected and Kate takes responsibility for an orphaned child. Can Kate and her cousin keep Emily from those chasing her and get her safely to her guardian? Twists and turns, captivating characters and lots of action will keep the reader's interest. Courage and faith in God are strong themes throughout the book. The audiobook was well done, with the narrator, Felisha Caldeira, giving good voice to each character. A book not to be missed.

A superb story!

This book is absolutely amazing! The theme of redemption and overcoming fear is strong and the adventure keeps you at the edge of your seat! Felisha did a wonderful job narrating it too!!

Engaging Christian Journey

Dear Kate is an interesting historical fiction that follows the spiritual struggles of its young protagonist, Kate. The narrative is emotionally engaging from the start, a characteristic communicated wonderfully by Felisha Caldeira's narration. While this book could certainly be enjoyed by anyone, it will particularly resonate with individuals familiar with the Christian faith. In fact, I believe it can serve as a great resource for believers who are experiencing their own spiritual struggles.

Truly dreadful narration

Gave up after two chapters, could not very past the awful emotionless narration. No idea what Audible were thinking about getting an American to narrate an English novel.

Nice story shame about the narration

The audio book version is awful beyond belief to any native English listener. Whatever possessed the publishers to hire an American/Canadian God only knows what speaker to narrate a very English story. The utter car crash of mispronouncing of even simple words was in the end comic. Had the narrator just read the story in his own voice it wouldn't have been so bad but the abysmally bad attempts at accent is unforgivable. If I was the author of this book I would be heartbroken. It spoils what is actually a rather well told tale. Be sure not to have a hot drink in your hand when the main character visits Ireland. The attempted accent is indescribable. The aviation detail was well researched enough to wash over this ex RAF pedant without pain. If you have the choice read the printed version yourself.

A beautiful read and a chance to learn

A survey of fiction readers showed that the one most important aspect of a novel to readers was what they learned. Domingo's Angel fills the bill perfectly. The reader learns about conditions in Spain through the lives of villagers in the mountains. The story is beautiful, heartbreaking, and haunting. The characters, depicted so vividly, stay with the reader long after the book is done. This is one I will read and reread. Do pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.

An Angel of a Book

Jenny writes a beautiful, moving, historical romance story using multiple POV's allowing you to get to know these characters. The descriptions are written so well, you vividly see them in your mind. I would love to see this made into a movie. Jenny had me smiling, gasping, tearing and satisfied when I came to the end.

It's OK...

This is an OK summer read when you don't need to think much.

Rosalba knows everything...

When I started to read "Domingo's Angel," it seemed to me to be a sweet, gently funny story. A young Englishwoman has decided impulsively to buy a house in a mountain village in Spain and to live there on her own, despite the fact that she can barely speak Spanish, among people who think she's so strange that she might be not quite human. Just as impulsively, she takes a handsome young stranger to bed, and he moves in with her. They adopt an orange cat. The time is not long after the end of World War II. The tone is lighthearted and humorous, with the unsophisticated villagers scratching their heads over Angela's odd ways of acting and speaking but cheerfully accepting her presence, and cheerful Angela â just as ignorant about their ways as they are about hers â enjoying herself and learning to know them.

There are hints of darkness in the first few chapters, shadows that Angela sees but doesn't understand and mostly ignores. Amused by the quirkiness of the village and lulled by the faintly dreamlike quality of the story, which moves quickly and smoothly, I ignored them too.

Another Great Series

I have to confess I am a big fan of Jack Ludlow's work. This work, like others, seamlessly blends historical fact with fictional narrative to produce a first class story. The narration is superb and helps keep the listener wanting more. It only took two days to finish the book.

Sorry to see this story line end, but looking forward to what is to come

Fly Me To The Moon

Author Mendelsohn probably didn't need to add the name Earhart after Amelia since anyone older than 30 probably can't think of anyone else named Amelia. Like Lindbergh there was only one. And in our mind's eye she is forever 39, classy, slender, athletic, good looking with a "kiss my butt" attitude and the guts of a burglar.

She knew from young she would be a heroine and didn't suffer the faint of heart. When the word went out across what passed as the media in 1939 that her plane was missing millions of just plain folks held their collective breaths. It is not a spoiler to say that she slipped out of the firmament that day in 1939 into that historical status of one of the great enigmas of the twentieth century. As far as we know Amelia and her plane have never been seen again.

It goes without saying that theories surrounding her disappearance are as common as dust. As time dragged on and we plunged into WWII one of the favorites was that she was taken prisoner with all that entails. Others believed she was stranded some where on a desert island. Searches for her remains and that of her plane continue to this day as the clock and calendar stride inexorably onward toward 75 years since that faithful day.

But this book is only marginally about that. The build up to the day she flew off to conquer the world is told in little vignettes from her personal life. We are treated in this fictional version of a part of her life to the occasional doubts and depression that invaded her veneer. We meet her husband and promoter George P. Putnam. We are introduced to her navigator Fred Noonan who is portrayed as a hopeless if not hopeful alcoholic. He is competent and talented but with his looks, personality and propensity for the sauce this hail fellow was usually pretty much worthless first thing in the morning. With this companion and a compromised communication system Amelia set off to circumnavigate the globe equatorially in her beloved Lockheed Electra 10E.

In the second half of this novel Jane Mendelsohn recounts the time following their disappearance. It is told to us in Earhart's own words with occasional narration. Amelia Earhart was an accomplished and successful writer and was the Aviation Editor for Cosmopolitan. The log book which Amelia kept during the time after her exit from our world reflects her introspective self analysis and evolution of her understanding of relationships not only between humans but with the rest of nature and the cosmos.
