Good first effort writing about Ancient Rome. It was ok but wished it was more...Loved his,Cooke's sub adventures and WW II novels. So I will listen to the nect couple hoping they get better.

Would you listen to Between the Forest and the Hills again? Why?

Yes, we'd listen to it again. There are plenty of humorous parts that will be just as enjoyable in future "listenings."

What did you like best about this story?

Because I selected this audiobook to listen to on a drive with the whole family (mom, dad, children from 6-13), I was especially pleased at the number of references and witty remarks that were most enjoyable for the parents. My husband particularly enjoyed the interactions between the priest and the Roman leaders.

What about John Lees performance did you like?

John Lee did an excellent job at differentiating between the characters in their voices so conversations were easy to follow.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This is a great book of historical fiction for those interested in Roman Britain at the end of the Roman empire, but it's also just plain fun. There's military subterfuge, delicate negotiations, and lots of humor. Our whole family enjoyed listening to this book together on our road trip.

Ms Blanton get busy I need more Defiance! All kidding aside, this author is truly gifted. Her way of making you feel as if your right there in the thick of it is nothing short of amazing. She doesn't bore you with unnecessary description, yet you can picture everything perfectly. The story just flows so effortlessly. I'm hooked on this town called Defiance and all it's likable characters. Thank goodness for Book 2. After this one I just needed more! Now I've finished Book 2 and I still want more! Thank you Ms Blanton for a very pleasant experience.

I truly enjoyed A Lady in Defiance. I felt that I had stepped back in time with the characters. It is an easy read and I did not want to put it down. This is my first read from this author and I look forward to more books I like this kind of historical fiction

Yes, I would listen again. It was a very compelling story. The characters were well written. The story was very well told, I felt as if I were in Defiance with the sisters. Seeing, hearing and feeling all the things they did.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Lady in Defiance?

For me, one of the most memorable moments was when Naomi was pouring her heart out to God by the water's edge and Mr. McIntyre was listening in the shadows. I think it was a crucial point in changing his heart even if he didn't know it yet.

I liked her portrayal of Ian. Her Scottish brogue was very good.

What did you love best about The Secret Chord?

it transports the reader to a time long past and reaquaints with characters that are familiar and archetypal. However, these characters are not merely shadowy images, but compelling men and women who struggle with the bloody whims of their their time. Beautifully written and great story telling.

The story was good, but the best bit was listening to it with the correct pronunciation . I never would have read it like this.

The book was a bit hard to follow because the names were foreign I me and it was hard to follow then by hearing the names. I think it would have been easier had I been able to see them on a written page.

The narrator was good, but I didn't like his version of the female characters

I love Geraldine Brooks, but I would not say this is my favourite book of hers. I would not recommend it.

Pirate is a Winner

I have been a fan of Steven Becker's Mac Travis series from the start, Mac having a bit of the pirate in his character.I looked forward to reading another series from Steven and the move to full on pirate stories seemed like a natural for him. I purchased Pirate in a collection of what appears to be more of a set of short stories in a series, and I feel it could have used a little editing to make the transitions a little smoother once it was combined as a single offering. Nit-picking done...Pirate was a great story with a good historical base with literary license applied to bring it to life. I enjoyed the rich character development and like another reviewer wrote, I got so wrapped up in the story line that I finished the book shortly after the sun came up. I highly recommend this book and I hope a long series, to anyone who enjoys getting so wrapped up in a story that he or she finds themselves mentally telling the main characters that what they are planning is not going to go well and please rethink it...The closest book I can think of in my long list of favorites that this compares quite well to would be The Walking Drum, by Louis L'Amour

A great read of high seas adventure!

A step away from my normal genre...at least as far as century goes....'Pirate' stays within my favorite geographical region of Florida and the Keys....and the book did NOT disappoint! First...let me point out that many of the 'less than positive' reviews I have seen for Pirate tend to be complaints that you need to 'buy the next book' to find out what happens next. Aren't the best books...the best TV series....and the best movies the ones that leave you hanging just a bit, anxious for the next installment?? Nevertheless...back to the book. Steven Becker has a talent for bringing his stories to life, allowing our imaginations to transport us (in the case of Pirates) to a time long lost, of high seas adventures, of treasure hunts and the romance (and trials) of the 19th Century. I have very much enjoyed Mr. Beckers 'Woods\Mac Travis' series...and I am grateful that he pulled me out of my 'comfort zone' to begin his 'Tides of Fortune' trilogy. Is this the epitome of Pirate stories? Is it completely historically accurate? I don't believe the author ever intended it as such. It is a fun read, luring us to the adventures of the sea...giving us an opportunity to live the life of a Pirate, at least for a little while.

GET THE NAME RIGHT!!! It's Jose GASPAR! The celebration of his legend is Gasparilla. Having grown up in Tampa where his legend is alive and celebrated yearly in a huge Marti Gras type celebration (there is even a full size working replica of a pirate ship which sails into Tampa Bay loaded with pirates) , this error was unsettling and off putting.

We'll make it 1.5 stars just to be fair (1.5 for Effort?)....

In her "A Note to the Reader" the author does mention that she isn't going for historical accuracy here. In the same note she makes references (Hippolyte Charles, etc.) to show she has done some research, and goes on to explain that the intent of this book is "historical entertainment" and not to create a "historical novel"

Having said that (user sighs) I appreciate the idea, but really disliked the implementation... it just didn't "do" it for me. Like many readers, I had to force myself to finish it. (And I only managed *that* by constantly repeating, "Any resemblance between the fictional characters depicted herein and any real persons living or deceased who bear the same names is totally accidental.")

Josephine, as mentioned in previous reviews, is an uninteresting, unsympathetic character. What *anyone* sees in her is hard to tell. (Oh, wait, she does mention having large breasts; that must be it ;-) After a couple of chapters I hit the point of not caring what happened to her... not a good start. Napoleon (believe it or not) fares even worse. He hates her early on, and loathes her by the end (and since the story is told from her point of view, one starts to wonder what she did -and didn't bother reporting to her reader- that made him feel that way). *He* is basically smelly, neurotic, sadistic, cruel, homicidal, and easily lead by the woman he can't stand the sight of. She's boring beyond words. The Perfect Couple.

(I suppose that someone who loves romance novels, and either isn't too familiar with the era and its famous characters or isn't bothered by Extreme Deviations might enjoy this book. And I use "might" loosely.)

If you absolutely have to read this, go to your local library. I'm donating my copy to mine, so at the very least it won't occupy shelf space at home.

(And where'd she come up with the "Bird of Paradise" tag...

Strong and beautiful characters

The women of the dovecote epitomise courage, dignity, faith even though their story, the big picture of history anyway, is already written and they cannot win. Gaining and keeping control, maintaining integrity at the level of the Self, when the forces arrayed against you cannot be overcome, that's the message of this beautifully written, beautifully spoken book

A tough one to get into but compelling once the story is established. Graphically violent at times. An interesting insight into community and beliefs of the time. Overall it was enjoyable.

Stunning.

Loved it! I wasn't sure if I would enjoy a story set in this time period but I really did. Be warned there are a few images that will haunt you. Hoffman's writing is poetic and moving.

The book started off slow, as many good books do, and became a book I didnât want to put down. Was so excited to find out how it ends only to realize Iâm off to book 2 to know.
