This debut novel by an English author packs in an integral slice of American historyâthe space program in the late fifties/early sixties and the Cold War. However, what makes this book utterly compelling and emotionally acute is a story of one familyâ(fictional) test pilot Jim Harrison, and his wife, Grace. They live in the high desert of The Mojave Desert, in Muroc, âthe largest slab of uninterrupted flatness on Earth.â Itâs a wide expanse of nothingness, but they love calling it home. This is where their friends live, and their life is built. The story begins in media res, demanding that the reader focus intently.

I was glad that I didnât know much about the book, and I waited to read the cover flap until after I finished the last page. Discovery and pacing are intricately tied to the suspense, and going into it blind rouses intensity for the reader. Iâm going to avoid talking about much content and primarily share impressions. Jim Harrison is fearless, instinctive, brave, and equipped to handle all the dangers of his job; each day he flies, he confronts mortal hazards. But what happens when he canât confront the pitfalls in his personal life? He is unafraid in the skies but timorous on the ground. How does this dissonance play out in a marriage? Grace is supportive and forbearing, and, at times, emotionally fragile. Empathy for both characters ripples from the narrative. The dialogue between them (and other characters) is superlative, without any clichés often present in a dialogue-heavy book.

A Surprisingly Different Story

When I downloaded this book I was expecting the usual wartime romance and at first that's what it appeared to be. It was so much more than that and I found myself being drawn into the story. I knew nothing about the Crimean War apart from the famous Florence Nightingale. The author obviously did A lot of research of the period and this is not a frivolous romance. On the negative side I found parts of Lucy's story slightly far fetched and a little long winded at times. The narration at first I found slightly annoying but as I got into the story I thought it was excellent. On the whole I really enjoyed the book and will read more by Gill Paul.

More of what we need

Once again Tom LeClaire masterfully crafts a brilliant story, this time giving us a picture of Lincoln we will not find elsewhere. While many biographical portraits tend to romanticize the past, LeClair portrays a Lincoln that is more human than I have encountered before, and thus one that is even more relatable and admirable. I don't want to give too much away here, so will keep it brief and simply recommend it wholeheartedly.

totally loved this book well written easy to read it was nice to read about lincoln who happens to be one of my favorite presidents that he was human also loved that he had a humor to him

Satisfying WOW! Factor

Thoroughly enjoyed this book! It has a satisfying WOW! factor at the end. The imaginings of Lincoln's experiences as the all too human young man provide a very believable explanation for the public Lincoln we've come to know. Highly recommend it!

The Dark Side or How to Create a Monster

The reason Tiger Woman is who she is, is understandable. Why she became Tiger Woman it's inhumane. Unfortunately we are a product of our environment. It's a shame she was not on our side!

Many conflicting emotions because as a woman, one can relate to how she must feel, yet as a human being one cannot relate to her behavior.

It's extremely interesting how the author was able to project a kind of empathy for Tiger Woman. Yet cause the reader to have feelings of great disdain for her!

Again, Mr Huffman has out done himself with the character and environmental descriptions as well creating such an unimaginable story line.

Thoughtful and Dramatic Alt-History

Peter Tsouris wraps up satisfyingly (for a Yankee). The series is not for those seeking great psychological insights. But it includes enough drama and personality to be a novel and not an imaginary history textbook. The narrator delivered excellent voices--especially Lincoln-- and pacing.

Good ending

I feel better. Enjoyed as much as volume 2. one mention for all three I got used to but didn't enjoy, I wasn't fond of changes of subject from the middle of battles. Especially when the detailed back histories or descriptions seemed longer than the battle sequences. But like I said, I got used to it and have that time to allow me to enjoy the book and series overall.

Partisan and parochial

Very well tesesefhed but the premise and conclusions are poor. The writer sssumes gross failures of diplomacy and strategy by the European powers. Meanwhile the US adopts new technologies over night and wins the battle of espionage at every turn. Good fun but poorly put together.

Julian Stockwins Thomas Kydd series, they are written in the same era and similar situational placing, Hornblower characters, which I like.

What does Steven Crossley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

He has reasonable characterisation and good narration inflections for the different situations almost on a parr with Christian Rodska and that is a compliment.

You have to have faith that somethings are real

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This western is well written and I enjoyed it so much I bought the series. My brother warned me about Westerns, as a truck driver he said you would get hooked. He was right, so I still read other books but I start with a western series I HAVE to finish a good one.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot is different with a few twist and turns not in the run of the mill western. Made for great listening

Have you listened to any of Ken Farmers other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first with Mr Farmer and he did a great job and look forward to his other books

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, some of the humor was great, and the part about the lost soul of a child was alittle tender

I have purchased the rest of the series and look forward to reading all of them A great listen so far.

Rip Roaring Western Tale!

If you could sum up Haunted Falls in three words, what would they be?

Excellent historical fiction.

What did you like best about this story?

The way the authors draw the listener in with authentic dialogue for the period. As well as the fact it is based on the life of a real American hero, Bass Reeves. So much of what is in the book is easily researched to document the writers molded their story around the man and his life.

What about Ken Farmers performance did you like?

Great voice! The listening experience is flawless as he takes the listener on a barn burning ride through the time period, The Indian Nations. It is the best audio western book I've listened to so far. Really looking forward to his next one.

Ken is a real professional who brings a ton of western experience to his audio books. He's the real deal having walked the walk and talked the talk on film and in real life as a Texas Cowboy.

enjoyable performance laughable story line. author was really reaching in terms of historical accuracy. interesting but silly theory of events.

Loyalty by Matthew a Lewis

I have enjoyed this book immensely.Richard emerges as brave and loyal man not without faults,he has a temper and can be impatient but always loyal to his family and his close friends.Listening to the battle scenes I felt as if I was there, sharing in Richard's fear in his first battle as young man then the sadness in the final battle at Bosworth.I enjoyed the tender moments between him and Ann and his conversation with his baby son Edward in the church just after his birth.I like this Richard not perfect but a man of his time who tried always to do his best.Matthew I think offers varying ideas about the fate of the Princes,all of them creditable.Finally praise to the narrator who helped to bring Richard alive.I would love to see this transformed into a drama ,and why not.

Unexpected Pleasure

I don't quite know what I expected of this experience, as I tend to listen to crime, thrillers etc., but I found this tale engaging and heartwarming, laced with a hint of danger. It also made me think hard about crimes which are legally wrong, but, as the author suggests, morally right.

Set in the relative innocence of WW2 St. Albans and London, this story was very appealing and well narrated.

Witty, heart-warming, entertaining.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Crooked Heart?

The 'advice' letters that the elderly Mrs.Sedge sends to Winston Churchill are priceless; comic genius.

What does Jo Unwin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Jo Unwin uses a wonderful range of voices to bring the characters to life. Each character has an individual voice full of character and nuance. They make the story come alive and it feels very 'visual' in some ways. I could see it all going on in m head. It was rather like listening to a radio play at times.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

She had a crooked heart but a heart of gold.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the best comic novels I have ever come acoss. It will remain in my mind for a long time to come. I kept finding reasons to keep on listening and was sorry when it came to an end. I shall be reading/listening to more of Lissa Evans' work soon.
